@Kairouseki:
I had never heard that Ace was based off of a real pirate, but I do think we should start using Portugues until Oda romanizes it (unless he already has :ermm: ). And Roronoa was romanized so that's what it's supposed to be.
Why start using Portgues now when we are already used to Portas/z? Unless of course Oda romanizes it that way, but until that time (which could happen any given time since Oars popped up out of nowhere.)
Which language was the original pirate originated from anyway? That in itself makes a huge difference on how it is written. What I mean is the same exact name may be written differently in different countries. Likewise, it may be written different in Japanese romanization than the original name.
@Envy:
I was watching 410 (I think) today and I noticed that they used Portgas D. Ace.
I'm still not going to complain, but it's a bit weird how they changed that. Just like how they had it translated as Gear Second in 403 and before, but after that they changed it to Second Gear.
I hear you on that. But what probably happened is they wanted to use the first versions, but Toei probably views these too and got annoyed and told them to abide by their blacklist or whatever. So it had to be changed. These are simply experiments anyhow. It will all be fixed to be consistent in the DVD release, and hopefully for both sub and dub.
This is actually the "legal" alteration of a fansub group giving out their scripts for fans to check for such spelling errors and mistakes and debate name and term uses and such. It will only make the final DVD release BETTER. Hence why someone should email Funimation for more serious things such as confusion on name terms and such.
@Demon:
Yeah, Chopperules and I are IN FANSUB GROUPS!!
I do Hellsing. (which is in an odd situation… only Episodes 1-4 are licensed... so Episode 5 has been out for a YEAR with no English version...)
I don't think I've EVER Put out a Fansub without some kind of Error that I had to fix in a V2 release (since the Series I've done is So Short, I've personally only done 3 Episodes of it, working on Episode 6 now)
And if you think ANY Fansub group is perfect... you're off your rocker... even K-F, the "Holy Grail" of One Piece Fansubs to most, have done v2 Releases and owned up to Typos from time to time. And SOME groups nowadays have been putting "[Not sure on this one]" in the middle of FINAL RELEASE fansubs!
Plus, The Simulcast doesn't have ANNOYING FLASHY BOUNCING TEXT Whenever a Character does an attack.
Advantage: Simulcast.
-Lol, Rin you must get tired of having to step into every argument with your excellent debating skills. xD
-But yeah, for real, that's absolutely true. And KF is by no means perfect in any way, shape or form. Granted I respect them alot. They have very high quality releases and put alot of effort into them. But one thing I have a grudge against them for is… STARTING THE DAMNED NAKAMA DEBATE THAT FOREVER LIVES ON. Yeah, I said it and it's true. Think of how much better things would be if that demonic word never plagued us in the first place. (Well you know, I mean in the sense of untranslated in subs, as the word itself is real.) I guess Haki would still exist though. :S
I do the whole flashy attack crap for my group as well, but only because the fans want it in the hardsubs. I personally have become a softsub fan at heart and hate karaokes and attack fx now. Thank god none of the official companies ever try such a thing on official DVD releases. D:
To sum this rant up, take a look at my previous piss-and-moan paragraph that Rin quoted above. When I first wrote it, it looked flawless to me. Then I reread it just now and I made like 7 ridiculous spelling errors. It's a trick of the brain on the reader, which is why having more people read it over at least reduces the amount of slip-ups.
Off topic: Briefly to Rin, I was just wondering if the fact that Hellsing Ultimate is licensed is what is keeping the subs for the fifth volume from being subbed or if it is something else.
@Kairouseki:
That and sometimes the fansub groups treat every expletive like the word "fuck". One Piece should NEVER have any f-bombs in it, never.
Precisely. It also greatly depends on the content/audience of the show. For example, most Shonens like One Piece are aimed at younger boys, but many older audiences still watch them. So swearing is used, but only to a medium level. In fact, I think only mature animes/mangas ever use the extreme of the extreme.
The Welcome to the NHK anime dub actually used it once for Sato. I was shocked. I knew it was a more mature anime than others, but I didn't think it warranted that.
@Demon:
God I know… I remember Usopp shouting "SHUT THE FUCK UUUUUP" to Franky in The Tom's Workers shop in Water 7...
and I know this is a Scanlation, but it's still fans translating One Piece:
Oars: OMFG! I FUCKING HAVE A FUCKING COCKPIT IN MY FUCKING STOMACH! THIS IS SO FUCKING COOL! IT'S FUCKING LIKE I'M A FUCKING ROBOT!!"...
...
...
...
And these are the BETTER Translations?...
GOD. THANK YOU. I thought I was the only one who got pissed off at those ridiculous translations. Who the hell uses "OMG LOL GHAHAJHA" internet shortcuts in translations anyway, unless the character is writing a text or something on their cellphone.
Just recently in the latest chapter, the version I read had someone go "OMG!". Why the heck not just write it out or use something else that gets the point across??
Oh and I can't forget Guru-fansubs using the f-bomber left and right like it was candy or something.
@Adamant:
I know, and I understand what you're saying. My entire point was that, since Oda hasn't written it out, it makes little sense to go "well, he's probably going to spell it differently from the real name, and the different spelling is probably going to be this, so let's go with that" when you can just, well, go with the real name.
But yes, it doesn't really matter, and I don't want to make a huge discussion out of it.
Well in the end it is as you said. It doesn't matter. Until Oda romanizes it anyway. So no matter which version you use these circumstances, you will not be able to please everyone. I say just use whichever version you like personally, and don't bother to complain about the version they use for the Simulcast.
@Death-T:
Holy crap. Teech is only one letter off from Teach. I'm sure anyone who knows who the real Edward Teach is will still get the reference. How do you guys muster up the energy to get pissed about such miniscule things? I love One Piece and I couldn't care about that if I tried. It's just the way they spell it in the subtitles anyway. It's not all that important.
Well said. Totally agreed.
