I was around 11 or 12 years old when I first saw anything One Piece related. I started watching the 4Kid's version of One Piece on cartoon network, and then after 20 or so episodes I decided it was too corny for me to stick with, despite the interesting characters. Then, about 2 years later, I got an issue of Shonen Jump, and saw One Piece in there, I realized the manga was much better than what I remembered from the dubbed anime. However, I ended up finding the English subbed version of One Piece on the internet, and watched that up until episode 377, and then converted to the manga (I still watch the anime episodes when they come out though)

I think it was 04 just before I graduated high school. Except for Pokemon I never had anything to do with any anime what so ever. I remember walking by watching my brother watch this show and seeing Sanji do his break dancing, spinning kick during the rap opening of the 4kids version. I thought the beat of it was pretty cool. But never really thought about it. Ever so often i'd see him watching it, and I saw this guy with an axe for a hand, a guy with a katana on each finger, and I was like woah thats pretty creative. Every anime looked exactly alike to me except one piece, it had such an odd style compared to anything I had ever seen.
Then I actually sat down right during the 4kids barate arc. Everyone kept screaming how amazing and vicious Krieg was. They fed him any way and he started attack the ship, I was like "hmmm interesting". Then Luffy punched through his spiked coat and I was hooked. The reaction of the characters was the same reaction I had. I assumed here we go, the hero is going to have such a hard time with the new boss until he meraculously gets his new power to beat him… lame. But luffy kicked the crap out of him and I was hooked!
Did my research and shunned 4kids for good, except their music, and decided to move past the anime right when Chopper was going to fight Hogback. I read up to the current chapter which was just as they sailed off from Thriller Bark. Been following weekly ever since.
I only go to conventions for one piece. Comicon I go for other things but things like anime expo? I wouldn't be caught dead there if not for one piece.
-
I saw the 4kids version. Originally, I thought it was good UNTIL I saw the original Japanese version. Then I read the manga to see all the things 4kids cut out. After a while, I become a hardcore fan. Been reading the manga weekly for current events. Also love FUNI's dub and the Japanese version.

rly good introduction in this thread :)
i think that some of the supernovae will just be some fodder for yonkous orso to demonstrate their power..
dont think capone will be a real opponent for the SH and also that the SH
s will fight each a supernovae…lol
luffy zoro and sanji should be able to defeat a supernovae but the rest,....not a chance in my eyes..also it would be weird when some "ordinary" could take out some established crew-capt`ns:blink: -
Well my very first contact was when they advertised OP in the last german dbz manga. I was like "wtf? Now its finished you want me to buy a new series which sucks, just you get some more money? screw you!"
Several years later the anime aired in germany, god was I wrong :D -
First watched the 4kids one on toonami here in england that was about 2005 then when they canceled the toonami channel I was looking why when i started to remember all the shows that i used to watch, took me ages to remember what one piece was call then when I found it on wikipedia(that was the first time i used it) I learnt about all the edits, started watchin clips on youtube then found a sub liked more gave the manga a try and liked that aswell, so in a way it thanks to 4kids that i watch any anime or read any manga cuz that was my first.
-
Well, I saw in some anime magazine that this crazy show One Piece was happening, and it sounded weird and not at all like Yu-gi-oh or Pokemon, and people losing their arms was scary and violent, so I shuddered and thought Luffy was a Mr. Fantastic rip-off.
Later, saw an add for it one TV. They were talking about one guy who was always kicking stuff, and I thought it was like his running gag, or something.
Later, browsing Manga at Borders, I saw One Piece, and thought I may as well look at it, because the kicking guy looked interesting. Read the first volume in the store, bought the second, got the rest (until 16 at that time) from the library, then went online to read the rest. Also I watched all the OP AMV's I could, which kind of spoiled Water 7 for me, but whatever.
-
I first learned about One Piece when I watched Chopper and the Island of Animals with subtitles. I didn't actually get into it until 2004 or so.
-
not sure exactly, some time around when vegapunk started. vegapunk already was a site where i got some episodes when i was watching anime. But was just wanting to know what happens so read manga.
I remember seeing gear 3 in manga. so sometime before that and after vegapunk started subbing.
-
got in late. saw a friend watching the latest anime with robin in iceburg's room.
got a complete copy of the kaizoku subs then downloaded the rest.
started reading the manga when i finished the anime available
-
At the time (around 3 years I think?) it was the only anime my friend Andy watched- and had been for some time.
I, the only person that seemed to watch anime/read manga regularly in my group of friends back then, had never even watched it.
So I had to check it out. I originally watched all the episodes first, which I think took me a week or two. By the time I finished I believe the anime was first getting into Luffy vs. Blueno. Since then I've went back and read the manga and all that and have continued to both watch and read One Piece.
-
I bring this up every few years and just mentioned it on the OP Podcast two weeks back, but I actually have a record of the first time I got my OP volumes.
These two fellows I met in Japan on my first trip to Japan bought me the first 3 volumes of OP just a few minutes before this picture was taken. After this picture I entered my host family's minivan and opened them. I'll never forget seeing the Oda dressed as an alien and thinking, "What a wacko."
-
Looking back at this makes me feel old…
I believe I started watching the anime in about mid 2001 or 2002 as I remember the introduction of Ace. In regards to the first time I started bothering with the manga was during the early to middle of the skypia arc.
-
Wow, how nostalgic. Well, I got into One Piece by first watching the dubbed come on cartoon network about 4 years ago, and I saw episodes here and there up through the Arlong arc. A year or so later, while I was a Narutard who didn't know what I was missing, Zkaiser made me see the error of my ways(That OP is the best Anime/Manga out there). So I started reading/watching it and have been hooked ever since.
-
My first taste of One Piece was in a monthly Shounen Jump magazine I bought because it had Goku on it. I was about eleven I think and back then, I didn't even know it was called "manga". It was just Japanese comic books back then and it sorta still is even now. Anyway, I remember reading the Dragonball Z and Hikaru No Go stuff and then seeing this thing called One Piece. I was kinda weirded out, since these guys looked nothing like pirates, but the moment Luffy punched out Captain Kuro, I was hooked.
it would be a while before I realized I could actually read this stuff outside the magazine, and I was kinda put off by the fact that these chapters made little sense because they would skip to every fourth chapter. I eventually couldn't find the magazine anymore, so i gave up until about a year later when I found scanlations and fansubs. I'm ashamed to admit that I passed over One Piece for Naruto when that happened, but I got better. I eventually migrated to the cartoon, but I've recently caught up with the comic and that's my main thing for it now.

3 years ago. I wanted to find a good manga that can last me for a long time. i found One Piece, after getting bored of several others.
-
I saw the crappy 4kids dub and thought that it was just a random show with hit and miss moments. They then started repeating episodes so I went on the internet to see how many episodes there were. One day I came across the subbed episodes on the net. I started at episode 1 and never looked back.
For a few months I was using a cetain subbing site which was far from up to date. I eventually found another one and wenth through jaya+skypia+water7 in a few days. I thought the most enjoyable arc was water 7 (before enies lobby). The internal conflicts of the strawhats (usopp, robin) combined with Zoro standing his ground and showing first-mate leadership skills made for great character development. Also, the animation quality was the best and the whole mystery of CP9 thing was awesome

Began watching One Piece Anime a year ago, marathoned till Thriller Bark, began reading the manga because I couldn't wait every week.
Began reading the manga, got more addicted to One Piece and now I can never stop thinking about One Piece.
Yaay.

I'm gonna hazard a guess and say you're a programmer?

Just be glad he's not a telegraph operator.
-
well, back in the day when the monster known as 4kids still had the rights to one piece I watched the anime only, not knowing of anything about manga and what have you I watched the anime for a while and then about 2 years later, I saw some new episodes on youtube. (back when no one cared)
and it was luffy on the way to save robin. on the sea train.
I followed the anime as much as I could but once I had finally caught up I wanted more. and so the first manga chapter I ever read from one piece waschapter 370
-
After reading volumne 42 of Dragonball, For the 7'th time, totally addited, I needed new drugs…
-
Few years ago, one of my old friends came over for the night and we ended up watching the 4Kids dub, some episode in the buggy arc. I watched it for a few weeks but then my parents said it was too violent for my siblings, who were like, 4-5 at the time (i was like, 12). Then, about one year ago, i suddenly got the urge to watch it again and found a site with the subbed episodes. Been watching and reading the manga ever since.
-
i started reading the manga right around the beginning of enies lobby i think. i lurked this forum a long time before deciding to join. my friend is the reason why i starting watching/reading one piece. at that time i was really into naruto and he told me to read one piece and i checked out the 1st chapter and i liked it and then i checked out the anime and got hooked.
-
I originally stuck with the anime because I heard about it first and didn't want to start all over with the manga. Once I realized that only the manga reached shabondy i switched to that and decided I preferred it
-
Viz Shonen Jump, for me.
Although, it was few months after the first Shonen before I finally read One Piece, and then after reading all the english One Piece I had, I look it up on the interent and found out that there was more chapters to read and thus hunt them down to read. XD
I think the latest chapters were like Water 7, or the arc before it. Don't know for sure.
-
It was last year, at this time I already about One Piece but never really read/watch it. But one day, I was at my school's library during an english class and there was a few mangas and a guy beside me said ''oh shit! they've got one piece!'' and after asking questions about it, I decided to read the first volume…I felt like something woke inside of me. Too bad the library only had 5 volumes =(
-
The first time I read the manga was six years ago, and I can honestly say I loved OP since the first book. There's something irresistible about that first volume. Waiting for the release of a new volume was soon not enough and I began to read the scripts that in turn lead to reading scanlations. I began with the anime pretty late, around Water 7.
-
The first time i got in contact with One piece was very odd. I was browsing around youtube for a day and this video "One piece 183 RAW"(or something like that) keept on comming up on the related videos list and i finnaly grew sick on it and decided to watch it. I got intrested and began to watch One piece anime untill i catched up and then started reading the manga.
-
I was in barnes and noble one day and one of the first volumes caught my eye. I had seen one piece 4kids commercials on TV before so I recognized Luffy. I though, "Oh it's that kid who looks like huck finn and can stretch". The part I opened the volume up to was right when Luffy busts into Arlong Park and asks "who's arlong?"
I didn't think much of it, but little did I know that the seed was already planted. I read until Luffy took out Mohmoo.
about half a year later, I was bored once again and I picked it up from the beginning. After that I didn't stop.
and now here I am

wow so many interesting first time experience with One Piece
Well…. several years ago (oh my... time do flies very fast XD) my friend show me the article of One Piece at a magazine. My first tought?? 'what an ugly pic!!' XD But several weeks later, I accidentally watch the anime version at local TV station. And interested, I follow the anime for several week. Getting more and more curious, I thought waiting a week for 1/2 hour episode is ridicilous. So I borrowed all the episodes available and watched them till somewhere around Drum arc or Alabasta I guess.
Being a person that can't stand curiousity, I searched for spoilers. Buying the translated version, but it's too slow!! Then my other friend gave me the scantlation. Eversince, not only I download the scantlation, I even 'forced' my friends to read OP XD
-
About 5-6 years ago, Naruto was beginning to bore me big time, and I knew One Piece was very popular, but the design seemed very weird to me. I ended up buying the first two volumes, which I didn't read immediately, but once I did, I wanted the rest.
I eventually bought and read the 24 other volumes which were released in France at that time, and read it all in about one week (I remember reading the last 8 volumes (the Alabasta arc) in one go, from 11pm till 4am).
I went on buying/reading OP each time a new volume was released, but after a while I couldn't wait anymore, and I quickly caught up to the scans (it was the beginning of Water Seven then). -
5 or 6 years ago or something, when the 4kids dub was around the captain kuro fight. I saw an advert for it before then and and thought: "that looks boring" but then my sister was watching it and I starting getting into it.
It was only about 3-4 yeas ago I properly began reading the manga though, and from there it's escelated.
-
A family friend around my age brought the first few volumes of One Piece to a house party, sometime around Christmas of '98. He continued to get copies from Japan over the years, and we would share them, trading back and forth. That didn't work in the long run, and I eventually got a collection of my own.
The oldest raw scan I seem to have is chapter 285.
Is this where I tell you kids of get off my lawn?
-
My interest in the whole series was peaked when I first saw an ad in my sister's "Fruits Basket" DVD set.
It was Funimation's ad for their version of movie 8. I don't remember if I bought the DVD first or read the manga first, but I could hardly follow what was going on in the movie. And I was really weirded out by how the characters looked, especially once I started reading the manga.
I wasn't even pulled in by the first volume of the manga, but some strange force compelled me to keep reading. And before I knew it, I had read all the English translations, and was aching for more. That's when I found scanlations. Oh, happy day! I think I caught up to the series last year around the Sabaody Archipelago arc, and I didn't think I would survive just reading one chapter per week, but here I am!
I am definitely glad I found scanlations, too, because when I ran out of the English translation volumes, it was on volume 15 or 16. And that was last year! Now, I think they are up to volume 21. ><
-
My first OP experience was in 2005 when I spent the summer in Belgium and one morning my cousing was watching TV and he switched to a channel called "MANGAS" (All french members all know this channel.) and it was the episode with Arlong verus Luffy, showing the recap of the previous episode when Luffy entered Arlong Park and punched Arlong into the wall. I asked my cousin what the anime was and he said it was called "One Piece" and from then until the end of the summer we watched it every morning.
I didn't pick it up again until 2007 when I spent the whole week watching all the episodes and I never looked back since.
-
It was advertised at TV about a boy named Luffy who wanted to become Pirate King. I thought it sucked, and thought Coby was his bestfriend.
That was my first taste.
When I started liking it though, the anime was in TB and the manga barely started Amazon Lily.
-
I am definitely glad I found scanlations, too, because when I ran out of the English translation volumes, it was on volume 15 or 16. And that was last year! Now, I think they are up to volume 21. ><
Remember, there's gonna speed up in January. Breathe in. Breathe out. Five volumes per month until June. Breathe in. Freak out.
-
Oh, you're right. I just found out a few days ago. And freaking out is definitely going to ensue. Followed by complete and total isolation from the world as I re-read through all 50+ volumes.
-
I'm gonna buy ALL OF THEM, as soon as they hit the shelf. It was about time, seeing how Naruto and Bleach got most of the promotion and attention outside of Japan.
-
I saw OP 6 years ago in the TV and I thought it might be a good series to follow. The design was not very strange to me, I mean after watching DB where common "people" were animals and stuff, or all the old animes I used to watch OP was not a big shock at all.
When it went on, I became more and more fascinated and the Alabasta arc was the top of it.Then I switched to the manga around the end of the Enies Lobby arc. That made me read the whole story. Then I reread it again and again. It was the time when I realized how better mangas are than animes. This was one of my best manga experience ever.
