For me, lots of things from FMA were like, the saddest things ever.
Also stuff from Saiyuki, but it was mostly Hakkai's past that succeeded in depressing me.
And I'll agree, TRC can be a bit sad sometimes.

1.Reminiscence
2.Reflection
why kenshin's life is so much tragic???!!!!!!!!!!!! he deserves a peaceful old life!!!!!!!
and the BGM make it much more sad..........
gotta say elfen lied
The 6th episode of the First season of Major! was VERY sad…..>_> Like abnormally sad for a sixth episode.
Berserk was pretty sad for me too.
Well I don't know if it's just me, but I found 5 Centimeters per Second really depressing.
! Especially the ending, where Takaki gets a text from his (ex?)-girlfriend saying how she feels that even if they exchange a thousand messages, their hearts won't move closer; I found that really heartwrenching.
! Then there's the very very end, where Takaki and Akari pass each other at the train crossing. Most people would assume (or maybe it's just me? Haha) that they would see each other, wait until the train passes, then jump into each other's arms (or at least strike up conversation, or SOMETHING). But when the train passes and only Takaki is left, I couldn't help but feel bad for him, ya know?
2. Clannad is also really depressing. Every time I watch the movie, I cry. Every time. And I've watched that thing like, 5 times already. D:
! I think it's really the part where Tomoya's dad goes to Sanae (was it?) and asks her to get Tomoya out of his depression, and then where he sees Ushio at the train station and she runs into his arms. That really got me.
3. Fullmetal Alchemist. I don't know if it's just me, but I thought that the ending of the anime was just so… ARGH.
! I remember crying on a Saturday night (yes, I have no life ._.) and I kept going back to the part where Ed dies ): It was awful.
4. Air was quite depressing too. I won't elaborate on it, but the episode where Misuzu's dad came to take her away and she ran back to her aunt made me sob. Like, SOB.
Anyway, I'm done (:

Honestly, though, the TV-series was way better in that respect, seeing how the movie pretty much cut down the relationship between Tomoya and Ushio to ONLY what you mentioned there, whereas in the TV-series, they actually got some proper development…
Actually, After Story episode 18 (The TV-series equivalent of that part you just mentioned) is now the most emotional scene I've seen in an anime... Or maybe not. It's really hard to say which one was the most emotional... Episode 16 or episode 18.
...Anyway, Clannad After Story has now replaced Kanon as the most emotional series I've ever seen. It has also replaced One Piece as the BEST anime I've ever seen.
Battle Royale (the novel and manga.. not the movie) had a few tear-inducing scenes in it
20th century boys.
can't help but cry… at a point. I am about 90 chapters in, and i can see a plot twist coming that would erase the sadness of previous developments,,,, if im right.
I've only cried at Gintama and One Piece. Odd ones, eh?
Elfen Lied …. the manga is even sadder than the anime.
Trigun ... somewhat sad especially towards the end.
Grave of the Fireflies - Not going to go into details... afraid of spoiling it for those who haven't seen it, but it is a real tearjerker. :cwy:
Full Metal Alchemist
Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal: Sad but awesome. Best Rurouni Kenshin OVA
Wolf's Rain
Clannad. It actually makes me Mad at the Author for making the Main characters life horrible and depressing.
! I mean what can be worse than your wife dying from giving birth your only child, and then you lose that child from a deadly disease. I mean come on. COME ON. :( :( I think I lost all my tears after seeing that.
I thought when Clannad was an emotional show it was going to be really happy, cheerfull and funny. I was wrong on the Happy and cheerfull part. :sob
So, I started reading Black Lagoon the other day, and I really wasn't expecting a really sad moment from a series full of hilariously over-the-top action sequences. This will take a bit to explain.
! It's the end of the Bloodsport Fairy Tale story, which involved the Italian mob hiring twin assassins named Hansel and Gretel to kill the head of the Russian mob. These are 11 year olds who spend the entire arc (outside of the hilariously over the top-action-sequences) being the stuff nightmares are made of.
! Then we learn that the two were sold into the black market after an economic collapse in Romania and ended up in the hands of child pornographers and snuff film makers, and all that naturally broke them and turned them into unfeeling killers. Even the mob bosses agree on how fucked up that all is.
! Anyway, the Russian mob sets a trap for them, and Hansel ends up being sniped down in from of the boss, Lalalaika, he insists that he won't die since they've had to prolong their lives by killing all the people they've killed up until then. Lalalaika just tells him that no one lives forever and that he has ten minutes left, whereapon Hansel breaks down sobbing until he bleeds to death.
! Meanwhile, Gretel has hired the Black Lagoon crew to get her out and away, so they take her to a man named Elroy in order to smuggle her out. En route, Rock is guarding Gretel, and she ends up telling him her story and how the place that she grew up in was always dark and had gloomy skies, and that she's never seen the sea, but that they don't feel bad when they kill anymore and that they love it, causing Rock to tell her that the world exists to bring happiness and that the blood and darkness isn't all of it, and she says that this is the first time that she's met a nice person like him.
! Rock then storms out in anger and starts yelling about how unfair everything is that turned the two children into monsters. Benny, the group's tech expert, gives him a talk about how if the twins had met someone kinder, they would have gone to school, made friends, be nurtured and loved, but that it wasn't meant to be, and not everything in their world is meant to be right.
! Their boat finally docks at Elroy's place, and when she disembarks, Gretel tells Rock that they should meet again one day and have lunch or something together, when Elroy shoots her, as the Russians had gotten to him first. Gretel mutters about how beautiful the sky is before dying. Dutch tells Rock to get a tarp to cover up the body, but Rock says not to, since her eyes are looking up at the sunny sky, and that she finally got to see the sea.
Man, I found all that horribly depressing…
Clannad. It actually makes me Mad at the Author for making the Main characters life horrible and depressing.

Totally off topic:
A pretty good real life contender would be Neil Peart. His only daughter at 19 died in a car crash. 10 months later his wife of 22 years died of cancer. Neil is a fucking trooper that's for use.
Sad endings suck!…but i can't resist them!!AAAh my worst one was the most dramatic scene EVER-death note where L dies.AAAA Its soo....waaaaaa!Its all so slow, and the shock on his face, then he slowly closes his eyes....waaaaaaa L!!(damn you kira!)also some touching ones are cowboy bebob, full metal alcemist, and code geass. Another one was s-CRY-ed because of Straight Cougar. he was cool man...Oh!and also when kimishima died.so unexpected and undeserved!
so many people are talking about Grave of the Fireflies, i now have to watch it to see wat its all about
Ah, I forgot to post this sooner. I finished watching through Clannad After Story recently, and I've never cried so many times over the course of an anime. Really, spectacular work. Kyoani knows how to pull at peoples' heart strings.
Like half this thread, I have to put my vote in for Grave of the Fireflies. Good GOD, I lip-wibbled like crazy in that one. And seconding the votes for One Piece anime moments. Losing Going Merry crushed me in ways moving pictures probably shouldn't be capable of.
And I admit, Yu Yu Hakusho got me more than once, too;
! Kuwabara's 'death' and Yusuke's second death in the anime got to me a
Hmm tengen toppa gurren lagann has a lot of intense scenes, i was about to cry on the last episodes but i got a hold of myself. Samurai seven was also emotional on the last episode but not that much..
Samurai 7 pissed me off more than made me sad.
I find Takahashi's part of Real to be quite sad.
I also found pre-timeskip Gurren Lagann to be sad. Haven't finished post-timeskip yet though.
Well, I understand this isn't what you mean, although after growing up watching the Dragon Ball trilogy - I cried as the credits rolled for the last episode of GT
Code Gease but it was truly epic at the same time
one piece also has it's moments
Code Gease but it was truly epic at the same time

All anime has, or at least most. The only scene from OP that made me feel deeply moved, was when they burned Merry, that's all.
I gotta say one piece. Especially Nami and Robin's back stories.
I mean nami sees her mother shot in front of her eyes and is then kidnapped by the shooter and forced to work for him for a decade or so.
Even though it came out over 2 years ago i'm still not going to talk about robin's abck story but come on. That is some sad shit right there.
Personally I even teared up a little at the going merry incident after Enies lobby.
I guess i'm biased because you could also ask what's the funniest, most bad-ass, best written and best voice acted series and i'd probably still say one piece. Smiley face emoticon that's winking with it's tounge hanging out.
Every character has a saddening background, the thing is how they get over it .. luffy had no parents and his grantpa was almost always absent.. so he grew up with his village folks. His background it also sad as being a child but luffy is luffy.. he got over it, he never said anything about not having parents and he always get the best out of everyone, cheering them up!!
This is sad, it didn't make me cry, but it's funny watching the celebrities cry
WARNING BEFORE WATCHING! The endings of (spoilers if you want it to be a surprise because these got voted the top 3 best tv anime endings):
! Mobile Suit Gundam, Tommorow's Joe 2, and Dog of Flanders
Are presented in this video. I can totally understand 2 and 1 being there, but the third place anime should not have been there. It was most likely there due to Japanese nostalgia. It had a lot of "best" scenes, but the ending wasn't one of them.
Anyways, don't distribute the link for this because the person I originally got it from had their account suspended because of "copyright claims".
! lGVwtk6Am4Q
I cried as the credits rolled for the last episode of GT
I too cry after I see a rape end.
Berserk. Why? God damn Eclipse, that's why. Don't sit here with your "oh, it's so sad how they set a boat on fire.." "Oh, a character I liked died…" "Oh, this couple never got together..." You fools! I have seen a man watch every friend he had in the world mauled, maimed, and eaten by the abominations of Hell itself, while trapped in an inescapable alternate world of horrors! And if that wasn't enough, his former friend and rival then ascends to become a twisted, dark archangel, and decides to vent his once hidden feelings by raping the main character's love interest. In front of him. While he is held down by demons that are simultaneously eating him.
Having everyone you know slaughtered, and losing your arm and eye to the monsters restraining you at the behest of their master, forcing you to watch your one true love raped right in front of you… That, my friends, is a sad fucking backstory! Oh yeah, and that one true love? Yeah, she's so traumatized from that she's now been reduced to a childlike mute.
So there.
! Oh, and the Berserk anime ended that way. At least the manga's still going, and has had some pick-me-up moments after that. The anime just left it off on that note.
SaiKano definitely has the saddest ending I have ever seen or read
It's kind of a romance story set when Japan's in war and the girl the main character's dating is actually engineered to be "the ultimate weapon"
In the end, because of the war or something, THE ENTIRE WORLD IS LITERALLY DESTROYED. Every country and land is nothing but broken buildings and aftermaths of weapon attacks.
! Worst of all, the main character is literally the only human alive! Knowing that, you realize there is no hope for humankind AT ALL. Earth and its inhabitants is NO MORE. Plus, he won't be able to survive for long because he's in the middle of nowhere.
! So Shuji somehow gets stuck in some cave and it's very dark, when suddenly he sees this glowing light. The light transforms into his girlfriend. He gets really happy and starts hugging her and kissing her. It's a sweet scene but in reality you see that it looks like he's talking to himself and huggin and kissing air.
! He becomes very delirious and most likely dies but he dies remembering his girlfriend because the last scene you just see what's in his mind: He thinks his girlfriend's alive and everything is happy happy joy joy
very very eerie and sad
any recommendations on the saddest anime ""episode""? i mean episode, not the whole series but just one episode. forget the build up and background stuff. be it the ending of a whole arc or saga.

Episode 18 of Clannad After Story was pretty freakin' sad. As were 16 and 21.

Eh, episode 18 wasn't really sad in my opinion, (Extremely emotional, but I considered it more "heartwarming" than "sad") and I'm not quite sure whether episodes 16 or 21 would have that much of an impact for someone who hasn't seen the rest of the series…
Elfen Lied was like a roller coaster, except it was just a drop. Flat out DROP!
And Battle Royale was pretty out there. Damn near everyone but the main died!
Naruto: Deidara VS Sasuke fight, why an awesome character like Deidara lose against that fag :(
@Vegard:

I'll agree with that. It isn't really "sad" by the strictest definition of the word, but it's definitel the most emotional and certainly made me cry.

What's your point? Aren't we going to assume that whoever is watching has seen the whole series? alfredjohn asked for the saddest episode of a given anime and I gave him the saddest episodes of one of the most emotional animes I've ever seen. Unless he meant he just wanted to watch one of episode of one anime that is extremely sad and entirely, in which case he'd be very hard-pressed to find one. I know time is valuable, but with anime you're pretty much gonna have to devote the whole time to watching the whole series if you want to get the full emotional impact.
FYI, I actually only watched Clannad After Story (I've never seen the first season) but it didn't make me cry any less.

Well, the fact that he specifically requested one single episode DID kinda give me the impression that he wanted something that could stand on its own without needing to watch the rest of the show. Of course, I could just as easily have misunderstood what he said.

Is that how it ended in the anime? The manga it was even worse.
@robbybevard:

Holy Crap! What did he get raped by a pile of rocks?
Mahoromatic probably had the most gut-wrenching, soul killing ending of any anime I've ever seen. There has been sadness, but never absolute universe-against-you kind of tragedy in a show like Mahoromatic. I don't know a single person who didn't finish the show and feel like dying afterward.
Though it's extremely violent, the Anime Movie Kite had a sad ending. After all that happened,
! she just gets plugged in the side of the head by another child assassin .
I cried at the end of Paradise Kiss so much when I watched it. Because I'm a sappy sappy person at heart. ;;

Really? I've read the manga and based on Nyleve's description it sounds pretty much like the same thing. Did I forget something?
Bokurano… /thread
Read the manga. :/
Naruto is the SADDEST manga/anime that i ever see
Hokuto no Ken is the saddest anime I've ever seen.
Naruto is the SADDEST manga/anime that i ever see
gtfo… :getlost:
*edit
Not sure if you are serious, if you are then :getlost:...but if you are sarcastic then I truely agree with you...
Elfen Lied was very sad... it was such tragedy at end and it was so damn sad... I wept manly tears couple times during last chapters.
OP has of course its sad moments which Oda does very well, though OP is not exactly that kind of manga.
Gurren Laganns ending really caught me suprised and I was really shocked.
Berserk is very sad too, entire Golden Age is very tragedic becasue you will know how it will end...
I am pretty emotional person, if this Fireflys series is really as sad as you say I think I should give it a shot... Not that I like weeping but if series can get me so emotional enough to cry then it must be great one way or another..
Really? I've read the manga and based on Nyleve's description it sounds pretty much like the same thing. Did I forget something?
! The basics are the same. Shuji is still the last human alive. But.
! In the manga, Chise herself is responsible for destroying and killing all life in the world, and she CHOSE to do it. And, at the same time, she intentionally left Shuji alive, then went and picked him up in her new spaceship self. He wasn't crazy when he saw her "in a cave", he went back to where they first made out, and she arrives and reveals she was doing what she could, (IE=ending war by ending all life on the planet) for him. She purposley left him as the last human alive, so that she, despite being a heartles fucked up machine responsible for destroying the earth, could be with him which is… a lot more twisted, to me.
Grave of the Fireflies
when yugi didn't win the fight
Nana TT_TT It's so realistic and depressing that I couldn't help crying my eyes out. It is also one of the best manga/anime I have ever read/watched! Shows you how unfair life can be.
One Piece T_T How can you not cry while reading some characters' past! Especially Nami's and Chopper's.
Berserk The eclipse was horrible. I felt like I was in a nightmare!
Bokura ga Ita Lovely manga but sooo depressing!
Deep Love Now that was really a heart-breaking manga.
Princess aslo made me cry.
There were more but for now that's all I could think of.
well i haven't watched many sad animes so for me it's code Gease the whole thing with shirly or his brother and even the end was just sad but it did have happiness in it too
