@Captain-M Hey, we just had Zoro swing by his homeland and it hardly mattered. It's one of the elements Oda seems to have decided to sacrifice to speed things along.
Chapter 1107: I've Been Looking For You!!
-
-
@Razh I don't see any reason to do more than what Oda did in Wano for Zoro. I was waiting to see if this was his arc in some way because of a 1 dimensional reason of being a swordsman.
To find out his family has more immediate importance after they left and established his village just makes it more of a point that Shimotsuki Village is more of homeland than Wano was.
Wano is just another piece to the puzzle of his lessons. It does not beat Shimotsuki out for his homeland. Try convincing Luffy that this Nika stuff is more important than what he experienced growing up under Dadan with Ace/Sabo.
Even for Sanji in WCI arc, his principles and values from Zeff are more priority than his blood kin. Most of the things driving him and resolutions were based on what he got from the Baratie and the split page of Zeff and him ended the arc.

I am still hoping for Teach being somehow related to the Buccaneers. Maybe the secret to them will be explored not with Kuma but with Teach, also with Vegapunk close to his death, I belief he won't be able to tell us what's special about them. Either Kuma will be able to talk and answer questions like he was prior to his "death".
That doesn't make sense since Saturn appears to know what Blackbeard is, and he still refers to Kuma as the last buccaneer.
-
@Cockycent Why even set up Zoro as having Wano lineage if it's barely going to be touched upon?
It's crazy how much Oda gets away with with some readers.
-
Is Catharina Devon able to copy DF abilities? Does the person she copies need to be alive to be able to copy this person?
-
I hate impersonation so much, it was perfect with Bon Clay
should've been exclusive to him but nope Oda is not done milking it even after Wano's horrendous origin story.
i dislike some fruits being simply superior to others in general. it's trash concept and uninnovative.
-
Odds of the arc ending with Zoro and Jinbe getting captured by the WG because they are too far from everyone else and couldn't run in time? Another element to make the ending shocking besides the so-called great Egghead incident.
-
The escape door was too small for Jinbro
-
@Razh Barely? He got to experience those with similar values to Ryuma. Onimaru and Yasuie. How they chose to defend and hold up Wano and what is considered their treasure.
Onimaru was down to die for those blades and Yasuie was going to die for the mission.
Through that, he continued on his usual path and applied what it meant to his conflict. The last thing he said was that "if I keep exuding it at this level, it'll kill me... but no that's perfect".
Gotta be willing to die to protect your treasure. Same thing happened against Daz with the theme of death.
Nami, against her own safety, helping Zeus. Robin becoming okay with being a monster devil for those she cares about. Sanji being okay with becoming science project if it means helping Luffy and the crew.
This combination of Zoro's connection to Wano through principles and not doing it with a "oh yeah, this is your cousin and this is your 4th aunt, so you should know you are special".
Oda went in the right direction here.
- He continued Zoro's journey and connected it to values, instead of overdoing the lineage aspect
- showed multiple examples in how far characters are willing to go via Onimaru and Yasuie who just so happen to technically be Zoro's kin
-

@Cockycent Why even set up Zoro as having Wano lineage if it's barely going to be touched upon?
Because people wouldn't shut up about it.
He answered at least three questions about the issue, in three different SBS. He didn't have much interest in delving in Zoro's lineage to begin with, since the connection by itself is shallow due to Zoro not really being from Wano.
-
Besides, Zoro only cares about defeating Mihawk and seeing Luffy achieve PK status. He doesn't care about being Wano's next mythical heroic figure, and the country isn't starved for legendary samurai in the making either.
-
As for matchups I feel Luffy will face Kizaru. Admirals are the next step in hype after Kaidou. Even if he starts the fight with some help from Sanji.
As for Saturn, I see him more of a tricky guy than a powerful enemy. I feel he will be reserved for Bonney and Kuma, or Giant Robot somehow. Maybe even s combination of the Strawhats and Punks since he keeps commenting on their teamwork. Saturn just feels like a secondary villain, that ties in to the emotional core of the arc, and must be defeated by island-locals that are central to the emotional story. Like Diamante was defeated by Kyros and Rebecca, and Orochi by Denjiro and Hiyori. So I’m betting on Bonney with some help -
How many characters before this arc were injured as heavily as Vegapunk that they would die if they were to move?
Seems like Oda made it so Vegapunk is there to comment on Sanji’s scientific enhancement and maybe give some tips.

The escape door was too small for Jinbro
I'm onto something fr. Allow me to elaborate on how the story would go, should those two get captured.
Jinbe and Zoro taken to Impel Down while Luffy and VP go to Elbaf with the giants. Their execution date is set right away but nothing will ever come of it, because the very next day after their arrival at the prison, Cross Guild launches a meticulously prepared assault on Impel Down. Perfect timing, which allows Zoro to see Mihawk again, and one look at him and Buggy will give him the answer he seeked ever since seeing Cross Guild in the newspaper, regarding the question "why would Hawkeye possibly want to be under that literal clown".
Zoro, Jinbe temporarily join Cross Guild as officers (with the intention to defect as soon as they can). Doffy too, with an even more twisted agenda brewing in his mind, most likely lol
Out of all the outcomes that people want to see out of Zoro vs Lucci (+ Jinbe being a factor) in chapter 1108 and beyond, this development is the one nobody expects, and it serves two purposes on the short term: ensuring the marines look somewhat competent despite losing the overall battle, and strenghtening the end of Egghead, since Oda hardly ever misses with his finales and we're bound to get a few twists either way. This whole thing would add the most tension to Luffy's crew if only for a few chapters too, and the last time we had something this suspenseful and dramatic was when Oda had us believe that Sanji left the crew and gave Luffy a parting message back in Zou.
Note that I don't actually think things would go that way, but there would be so much good to come out of it. It would allow more development for certain SHs in Elbaf and more room for them to breathe, if we only have 8 of them and not 10 on the premises. Zoro and Jinbe would often get appearances in the story regardless and we'd get a fair amount of Cross Guild screentime up until after Elbaf, which is a likely timeframe for Zoro and Jinbe to rejoin with the crew.
CG attacking Impel Down always seemed like a pretty unimaginative theory to me (and Doffy joining them, even more so, like actual cancer) but if we get Straw Hats in the mix it suddenly paints the idea in a new light.

The only people who care about someone's origin are the American readers of One Piece. The country full of "Irish", "English" and "German" inhabitants.
At the same time, they want nothing more than a self-made man who achieves his goals through hard work, without this being dependent on destiny or good genes. So what does the origin matter if it doesn't do anything for the character? -
I was forgetting that we still have one mystery left that could bring some surprise to the arc.
Who brought Luffy food? The most common suggestions I find are Caribou or Van Augur, followed by Luffy himself manifesting food out of his Nika powers. However, I feel if it was Caribou or Van Augur, the reveal would have preceeded or followed their reveal in 1107.
There's also the old but now far less likely possibility of it being Kizaru.
But who do you think it could be? And how could this reveal impact this arc?
-
@Cockycent the whole thing left me wanting for more. Just some basic human interaction and seeing Zoro and any other SH have any sort of reaction over such a big deal. You know, our main characters.
Instead, why not make secondary and tertiary characters the focus of an arc.
-
@King-Cannon That's borderline victim blaming. Aren't Oda and his paid editors the ones who decide what gets in?
You don't just decide to make one of main characters Wanoan, and then go so far to make his family a big deal and then just fail to do anything meaningful for the character with it.
But that's hardly the only thing that got inexplicably skipped over in Wano arc.
-
@Gear-4-Sauce he cares for a lot more than that, which he even displayed in the same Wano arc we're talking about.

@Riccardo well I live on the coast of Adriatic Sea. My family has lived here for generations. We draw origins probably from Bulgarian territory or even further. Seems like guys migrated during Turkish conquest.
What does that have to do with anything? Same as your comment, nothing.

@wolfwood How come? And aren't Americans the Croatians of the new world?

@Deicide initially my money was on Kizaru because he seemed to have some lingering affection for Bonney and Sentomarou. Plus the growth comment to Franky. But since Kuma made land, he has been hell-bent on carrying out his orders to kill everyone and the extent of his sympathy turned out to be "I'll try to make it painless". So I don't know what to think of him anymore. Maybe it's one of those serendipity cases where 5 chapters ago Oda himself had not decided on who would be the Straw Hats' surprise ally.
Van Augur is currently the most logical candidate. Him and Devon have been lurking on the island for a while now and it's almost certain they needed to maintain a high level of confusion in order to quietly achieve whatever their objective was - fueling Luffy for another round is a step in that direction. It's definitely not an act of sympathy coming from these two (at best, they would see it as a chance to f*ck up government forces without busting their cover), but if it helps further their plans surely they could have gathered food and Van Augur warped it next to Luffy.
Luffy willing food into existence is by far the least satisfying explanation. Ok he has godly powers, so I could see the gag of him going "ah if only I had some meat in my pocket" and poof here it is. But I don't find it very appealing because at its core, it would only be clumsy plot magic to justify another round. I wouldn't mind seeing it used for comic relief every once in a while, but not as a solution to high stakes perils.
Other third parties, I can't think of any I would be pleased to see. Possibly Germa and Caesar could be in the vicinity since they decided Vegapunk was to blame for their woes, but giving food isn't their style. There's already quite the cast now that we have marine forces all over the place, CP0, giant pirates, BB Pirates, Kuma, ... I'm not sure I want another surprise guest. And if indeed someone stealthy is out there trying to actively help the Straw Hats, well they have been doing a very poor job so far, I'd rather they made themselves known instead of delaying the reveal for some last-minute surprise.
Speaking of Blackbeard pirates, could it be they're here for the Seraphim ? Everyone seems to have conveniently forgotten about them with the bombing, but as fars as I remember they weren't left heavily guarded. Devon and Van Augur could have been around long enough to catch some information about the Pacifista chain of command and look whose impersonation did she just secure? The world's highest authority.
-
@Razh Sorry, that may have come across a bit too personal than I initially intended. My intention was not to address you directly about this, because I indeed do not know where you come from. I was referring more to the often-mentioned paradox of readers who care about someone's family tree, but at the same time don't want it to influence a character's actions. In my opinion, an explanatory backstory is not something that fits into the spirit of Zoro's character.

Oda has to read every fan letter I believe, so if people kept writing about it, he likely felt forced to clarify it. In the end, he is the one who has to dedicate the little time he has reading dozens of letters and then choosing what gets published.
And again, Zoro is not Wanoan. He merely has some Wanoan ancestry, which by itself is not special since everybody in his village does.

I'm intrigued by the help because the most logical moment to reveal it is when the helper becomes relevant to the plot. If it's Kizaru, for instance, I expect Luffy to mention it before the big fight ("Why did you give me food?").
Likewise, I feel if it was Caribou or the Blackbeard Pirates, it would have been revealed together with their appearance, either just before or during it. I guess it could still be revealed at the start of next chapter if it's still covering the Blackbeards' actions, but I feel that does not work as good as a prelude to their presence revealed, and it's more likely they'll disappear until the end of the arc, when revealing it would have no impact anymore.

That's exactly what I think. The Blackbeard Pirates came for the Seraphim, and now they got the highest authority to order them around. Catarina Devon just needs to command them to obey Teach and his crew and ignore all other orders, and no one (except maybe Bonney, but restricted only to S-Bear) can outrank them.

Luffy likely doesn't know who helped him. He probably just noticed the food laying around and didn't question it.
-
@King-Cannon Unless the food was teleported, he should know who helped him. He has the reflexes and perception to notice something like that.
But he knowing or not is not important, us readers being informed is.

I do agree on the timing for the reveal, especially regarding the BB pirates. Kizaru can still have his moment, but by now it will feel a rather awkward turnaround considering he tried to kill Bonney at least 3 times over the last 2 chapters. If he still secretely wants to help, he is taking things much further than ages ago in Long Ring Long Land when Kuzan was testing if Robin had found reliable friends.
-
@Razh Zoro being fed and experiencing Ebisu Town. Tsuru's hospitality in Leftover Town. I understand wanting more, but lets not say basic human interaction isn't there.
I love the approach of making Scabbards or Kyros more of a main characters.
These characters will pay the favor back 1 day and pop up like WB's allies. When that time comes, I want to remember these characters being more than just faces/spectators during their arcs.
That is 1 reason and the second is now when the crew needs help, these characters can now hold their own more than before.
- I remember what Kawamatsu had to go through to protect Hiyori
- Kyros, even as a toy, plotting revenge with Tontatta
- Minks loyalty to the Kozuki
I wish I knew all of the stories behind how WB gained such loyalty to all those characters and they were willing to go to war over Ace and WB.
-
If Kizaru was the one helping, I could see him confessing it and saying that every time he had a chance to strike Bonney he hesitated, and then being glad that now he can finally go all-out because he doesn't care for Luffy and Sanji, and asks them to do the same because their fight give his friends a chance to escape.
-
Given that he specifically remembers Bonney's attempted punch, which happened around the same time, Luffy should probably have a sense of where the food came from.
Though it doesn't feel hugely consistent with his recent actions, I feel Borsalino is the only twist answer that's even remotely possible. Blackbeard's crew have no reason to help now that they're official rivals, and if they could get that close and then away from Saturn undetected there would be no reason for the dramatic encounter at the end of this chapter. Caribou doesn't seem like he has the balls to try it. Luffy's powers being able to manifest food is an option too stupid to entertain.
But if I may present a mundane option: Franky. Look back to chapter 1095. The last time we see Luffy before the flashback begins is on page 6, in Franky's hand after being saved from Saturn's leg attack.
Luffy is not seen in the following pages as Saturn does his paralysis move, and the framing makes it ambiguous if he's still in Franky's hands, with Vegapunk and Sanji blocking the view.
However when we return after the flashback, Luffy is lying off to the side, away from the others and behind Atlas.
So Franky has obviously tossed him to relative safety either between panels before the paralysis attack, or in a stolen moment of freedom during the attack to do so. Would it not make sense for Franky to know that food would help him recover and try to toss him as close as possible if he'd spotted a food vendor or cupboard or fridge that got crushed by rubble in the fighting? Luffy's still begging to be fed in that first post-flashback panel, but maybe he just hadn't smelled the nearby feast yet.
I'm not all in on this Franky idea, I'd maybe still ultimately bet Borsalino, but the way things are set up I don't think there's any answer that won't feel like a little bit of a handwave.
-
@Captain-M The problem with the Franky answer is that there's no reason for mystery then.
Usually mysteries like this carry some sort of info that will make a difference in the future. If the answer is too simple and makes no difference in the future, then there's no use for mystery.
But I find it weird how this one mystery hasn't been solved yet, and how all of its possible answers feel awkward right now.
-
@Deicide I agree with you there. And if it was him, there shouldn't have been a reason for Saturn to ask who fed Luffy, since it just happened in front of him.
But it's still among the answers with the least logistical issues, so I thought it was worth at least mentioning.
-
I personally think a lot of the Zoro/Wano stuff was driven by the fan idea that if Sanji gets something, then Zoro has to get similar.
For me Zoro works so much better as a simple character, Sanji brings a lot of emotions into the crew, so it made sense that he's portrayed as more complex and hiding deeper pains than initially suggested.
-
@Rean agreed.
Zoro’s ancestry is a non-issue. What was important about it was covered in the story. The rest is just background and would have no weight on Zoro or the Wano arc. If there was a subplot about Zoro having to lead the samurai and his ancestry playing a role in it, then it would be interesting to cover that in the story. But since those revelations would have zero impact, Oda chose to reveal them in SBS, and even forewarned it wasn’t important to the Wano arc.

@Cockycent Why even set up Zoro as having Wano lineage if it's barely going to be touched upon?

Yeaaaaaaaah, no. I don't buy it.
It was Oda who had characters point out that Zoro was identical to Ushimaru (even titled the chapter after the fact) and followed up by showing Ushimaru was a carbon copy of Zoro.
So, no, this was not "on the fans". Oda clearly tried to build interest around Zoro's ancestry and then ultimately decided to drop it and have the resolution of the mystery go on an SBS 2 years later.
Would Zoro's ancestry matter to him? I doubt so, but that's beyond the point. The relevance of a plot thread dictates if it should be introduced, not if it shold be concluded.
Ans I say this as someone who has/had absolutely zero interest about Zoro's family and is glad the subject was dropped instead of taking up pages.

The timeline is really strange
In chapter 1103 some food mysteriously appears next to him.
In chapter 1104 he has disappeared
In chapter 1105 he is found back by the marine next to a vending machineAt first I thought that Caribou was a good possibility but with the ending of 1107, it does not make much sense anymore. And now I wonder when will be the good time to reveal this mistery
-
Speaking of timelines, Van Augur was in Winner Island the previous day, so he couldn’t be in that Blackbeard ship we saw. He also can’t teleport far as of now, so he must have come by ship.
The most logical answer is that Catarina Devon was in the ship watching over Egghead. When things went crazy, she called the others and Augur was sent to help her.
But the fact that another Blackbeard ship came all the way from Winner and reached in time opens some questions and possibilities…
Also, if Devon was watching Egghead, then could Laffite be in Elbaf? Maybe he was spying on Shanks and saw what happened to Kid.
-
Yeah, I found that weird too. The BBP ship was seen near Egghead on 1079 and on 1081 Van Augur was still on Winner Island, so I guess he went there at a later point to collect Devon, and she was alone on the ship we saw first.
-
Lots we don't know about Augur's power. The range limit might get tighter when he's transporting other people besides himself.
-
Are spoilers going to be later than usual from now on?
-
@Captain-M Well, the fruit's limits aren't fully explained, but I feel that he explaining he hasn't mastered it yet is too much of a hint that he couldn't teleport all the way from an island to another.
-
@Shiebs Yes, the early magazine leakers have been arrested, so there's only the late leakers. Some people like Redon and Pew still have ways to know stuff early, but they usually waited for others to leak information and would just confirm it as to not bring attention to themselves.
Maybe we still get Redon's summary today, but that's up to him.
-
@Deicide Obviously that's the face value reading. But I like stories where the details line up instead of ones with holes, so I'm looking for interpretations that reconcile the info we've been given.
-
@Captain-M I find it bizarre how all these islands are less than one day away from each other, but the precedent was already set when Garp visited G-14 while CP-0 was invading Egghead and in a few hours was already storming Hachinosu.
-
Also, I hate that log poses seemed to have been entirely forgotten. I get that Garp would have access to Logs from other marine bases, but how could he arrive in Pirate Island? In Paradise it would have been impossible to get anywhere without one. Now
-
Koby already knew the location of Hachinosu because he was involved with Rocky Port. Surely Garp has been places in his youth too, this isn't some random island after all.
