I tried reading chapters on Manga Plus since when it came out, but image quality and reader features were so awful that I gave up immediately and happily got back to Jaimini. It's incredible that they coordinated this big operation against illegal scans and still their site remains unchanged, it's so bad that it drains away a lot of excitement from me. They should be professional and yet "fan" sites are way better than the official one.
I even forgot american readers use strange names like Zolo, that's a punch in the eye and an enormous let down (some will say that's just a name, I can understand it, but to me is really irritating). in Italy we have Rufy instead of Luffy, I still buy every new volume but every time I see it or any of the other illogical adaptions it gets on my nerves and I lose will to read their translation.
Such a shame it happened right when some of the most exciting chapters are being released. I'll keep sending reports to them, but for now this anti-piracy operation has only ruined my experience instead of making me love One Piece even more.
How do you get double page on the mangaplus site using a laptop?
How do you get double page on the mangaplus site using a laptop?
You have to change to horizontal. In the red bar that appears, click on the three white dots on the top right and you can switch.
They really ought to give this thing a better interface. It's not intuitive at all. I think it's directly inspired by Japanese reading sites, but I find it aggressively unappealing.

Can you read split single images but have the spreads be double pages? Like scan sites?

No. Greg or Stephen somewhere in this thread went into how in order to do that someone would have to individually code every page going back 900+ chapters and code them as single pages or double pages, which would be a gargantuan task.
Considering the biggest gripe people complaining about scanlation sites going down is that the Viz translation is less authentic to the Japanese experience, it's odd people wouldn't be more excited to have every page presented as if you were actually reading a comic book with two pages visible at once.

Because reading digitally is different than reading physical edition. Double pages for everything doesn't make sense in digital readers.
You can't say "well that's how it is with physical" ! Digital is a different beast.
As for the translation, I think Stephen translation is amazing and its the only thing making the experience bareable.

Yes, you can(on horizontal mode). You can even go true full screen in M+. No true full screen in Viz unless you do it manually by removing some html elements from the page(must repeat for every chapter/page).

yeah, mangaplus is nice on horizontal mode, but this made me a little bit, hurm….anyway...
The structure of that spread is so weird now that I see it like that. Why not just make Roger a single page and leave the other for the rest ?
Oda loves this 2/3-1/3 double pages. It makes the numeric reading quite difficult when the reader only allows single page.

Only a guess but one based on photography as well as art. This layout softly carries the eye across the gap. It creates a lighv mood as opposed to a stark contrast like, say, Enel. Check out the dlfference there makes you focus like a laser on the page. Now read Roger's again and see how the design follows the mood of the panel and almost seems to play out in slow motion and brings you to the next page.

Yes, I like it more this way, imo. Also, this is not the first time Oda does this kind of double spreads, weird this is the first time this is mentioned around here. I believe it is because of the change to mangaplus, and people are not used to the gap between the pages.
You guys still need illegal spoilers anyway
I can't even send feedbacks on MangaPlus because the "send" button on their page is greyed out and not working.
I don't know anymore if this is one of the worst internet services I've ever experienced or if it has just crossed the line and became ridicolous.

It works perfectly fine for me. You know you have to actually type something in first?

Yeah, it's fine for me as well as long as I type something in first.

Sure, I know and that's what I did. I even tried many times reuploading the page, rewriting the message, trying to see if it worked pasting it inside the box and I've just done everything above again right now. Same results as before, the button is grey and unclickable.
Now I'm on Chrome, I'll have to try later on different browsers and devices, maybe there is something in my browser/version which breaks their site (even though my browser hasn't nothing special or different applied in it, it's them who should ensure compatibility).
Fact is that seeing how broken and amateurish their reader is I wasn't surprised finding even more basic problems in their site. I can't accept that the most famous japanese manga company can't hire someone able to build a proper reader, which is the most important feature of their new service. It isn't professional and even if they have great products they're offering them in a bad way (I think Greg said something about low image quality being related to piracy problems, if that is done on purpose that's even more stupid because they're trying to fight an established and well working system with a lacking one which isn't even appealing to new readers, they're just showing they can't offer a service as good as one done by unofficial people instead of disencouraging illegal scans).
Maybe I'm the only one getting it as a BIG problem, could it be 'cause easy-on-paper-but-still-bad services enrage the computer scientist in me.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Seems like I found the problem: you can't send messages which contain too much words/characters in it, even though it isn't specified anywhere. If I cut the feedback down to 90~ words the button will become white. Wow, just wow.
"I don't like this." is not equivalent to 'stupid'.
In most entertainment media I can think of, the superior version of any product is never given away free on a regular basis.
Television has commercials which prompts viewers to perform careful splicing or purchase commercial-free versions.
Mobile games may give players powerful items but they're highly limited and entice players to purchase them.
Desirable and timely cosmetics for games now make the profitable foundation of 'free' video games.
Famous artwork may be distributed via pamphlets and advertirements, but high-quality text-free print-outs of many great pieces of art is not allowed. Even prints are strictly monitored.
If a media company is stupid for protecting the superior version of their properties, literally every media corporation is as 'stupid' as you suggest.
The application being obtuse is an issue for sure, but this constant armchair labeling based on zero knowledge and pure opinion, really needs to be reeled in.
Conservative and somewhat short sighted seem more appropriate. And by that i don't really mean Viz specifically, but rather all the parties who need to invest in their netflix or steam and find a way to thrive without holding up progress before they go the way of video rental. And i can say that i have no idea how they'll eventually manage to do so in a way they'd deem acceptable, but you figure that they don't have much choice but to adapt or die. That or shut down the internet.

That would really only apply if they were giving their entire product for free, right? But it's only the three first and three last, which is meant to entice customers into buying the whole thing. A lot of entertainment stuff gives the first few episodes/chapters/whatever for free.
At least that's the goal of this business model. If there's already a free incomplete version and a paid full version, there should be no need to make the free version more unappealing. In fact, I'd say it's the opposite. The better the product the more likely people would want to buy.
Of course then is when we run into the piracy problem. People would 100% find a way to rip the high quality images from Mangaplus and pirate them. But the thing is…isn't that already happening? The only reason they don't rip them already is because scanlations come out earlier. And it's not just sketchy magazine leaks that are the source of piracy, either. Anyone can go to the store, buy a volume, and upload it to the internet if they want once it comes out. It's not just manga, anyone can pirate anything if they're willing to buy the legal version themselves and then profit with ads or whatever. So if they use lower quality images just to avoid pirates getting them that seems a little pointless because #1 pirates clearly already have access to high quality scans (even if they were able to put an end to early magazine leaks, they're not hard to get after they come out, so at most it'd delay things for a couple weeks) and #2 you're still not offering a better product from the guys stealing from you in any case so why bother. Not to mention quality is much more important for a legal version than for pirates. Few people would stop reading the pirated stuff just because it's a little lower quality, but if we're talking about potential clients that might be willing to pay, they're much more likely to be turned off by that kind of stuff.
Wolfwood wins in his first sentence.
In a word, Japan.
And as I pointed out, in this case, it isn't just Japan. That's entertainment and media in general.
Because I'm bringing these points forward doesn't mean I agree with it btw. And as t4e poster farther above was keen to add, it's not the only reason.
My point is simply there's more going on behind the scenes in terms of what's possible/impossible due to industry standards that are in place for logistical purposes. Some of them I know, and some I can only guess. But the point is, there's not some onspiracy at work to do things deliberately poorly. (…cept the application proper, that seems like outdated design)
I used to think the same as everyone else but when you see how the sausage is made and the moving parts behind the curtain, it drastically alters your view of how media is presented.
In my right mind I'll never say, "You are required to like this reality." Because I agree with the sentiment. But...I do ask that people consider that there are often viable reasons for why these decisions are made and they deserve to be considered as part of the process. The people trying to bring it to you love the ever-living out of it, but sometimes there are tough choices. Choices that, with proper support, can change and grow.
I can kind of understand the reasoning and thought process behind those who complain heftily about Mangaplus. I know that feeling all too well, thinking that the solution is so painfully obvious and the people in charge must be either morons or deliberately screwing things up.
What helps is someone shedding a little light on the inner workings (as Greg did above) and saying "hey, it's actually pretty complicated".
As a sidenote, I only just now clicked on the link in Greg's sig

Right, but just because it is complicated doesn't make it any less shitty.
And in general, the consumer shouldn't be concerned by challenges the developer face. If the service is shit, they are right to complain.
And to top it all, the staff behind mangaplus is not engaged with the community, a simple we hear your feedback and try to improve can go a long way with people.
They desperately need a community manager.

Oh, I agree the reader isn't in an optimal state right now. I think it's more of an explanation and less of an excuse. Change is needed of course, and hopefully the people in charge soon start taking our feedback seriously.

Congrats. But did you find the secret link?

Japan is only just adopting such Western commercial tendencies for official outlets. Again, not saying I disagree but the, "Why isn't it how I want it now?!" track of thought and applying Western producer/consumer practices is why the West has such a bullish image.
Thats awesome! I can actually read it on Sunday now lol
So , the Arabian fans did a campaign to Manga Plus app to make an official Arabic translation for all manga inside the app , and this is the reply from the main staff :
Thank you for your input from the Arabic-speaking countries.
At the moment, we do not plan to roll out in Arabic.
However, it will be a reference for future development.Sorry. But wait a little longer. Take your time. We just started MANGA Plus from last year.

The twitter responses are hilarious. The arabic community seems really fun. Need to save that mad roger pic somewhere.
This is why having multiple sources is better. They're gonna find a way to stop illegal scans indefinitely and then they'll be the one and only source. They get to take as long as they want to answer to things of this nature and give people what they want. Not saying that it's easy to translate to the Arabic language. As i've said a million times, illegal scans has helped the fan base grow despite the faults in translation. Having multiple sources and ways to become a manga fan is what the piracy police force ignore
They get to take as long as they want to answer to things of this nature and give people what they want.
Shueisha wants to have every manga available in every language like yesterday.
The 'they get to take as long as they want' argument is invalid because they want you to have their product, legally, as fast as possible.
However, the world of business doesn't work as easily as the way teens and young adults not involved in the industry think it does. Licensing, publication, and translation are a massive undertaking and require a near impeccable infrastructure in terms of accountability.
That doesn't mean anyone should settle.
Not by far.
You should be loud. You should be in their face. I would never ever suggest anyone just accept whatever trickles out.
Do people see that response as a defeat? Because
1. The fact that a response was generated is amazing.
2. Did anyone see a 'never' in there?
3. Did you know that 'Wait a little longer' is usually business lingo for, "We're trying to make this possible." ?
If anything, Arabic fans should keep up the pressure and intensify it. They're an incredibly influential base and I'm so jealous that they have a fandom that's not only organized, but also geared up to support the official product. The English community could learn a lot from them. Looks like MP picked the wrong debut language ;)
The urgency to adapt or deliver on things of this nature is different when there are others giving people translations illegally. Manga Plus started in 2019. Why? They've had digital platforms since 2012, so they were well aware of the market overseas. If i'm not mistaken, the reason is that there isn't enough of a demand in some markets. Where should these individuals go for it?
I didn't say and did not try to imply that they will never provide responses or deliver on what people want. I spoke on the luxury that the official providers have due to possibly being the only source one day, so they can take as long as they want compared to if they had to compete with illegal scans when it was at it's height.
I've seen other responses from that same MP account that are less polite and encourage piracy policing which is very hypocritical because a lot of those same individuals either started from an illegal source or have made use of it before.
That last paragraph is my main issue. many readers had a source with some of the illegal scans and now they have to "organize and intensify pressure" to get what they want from the official providers lol. I hope they do get what they want. There isn't a group for everyone tho. Hence why having other sources is a benefit. A reader of illegal scans mostly makes their way to paying for what they like in the long run.
The minority groups that don't have a voice are the ones that suffer and many of you are proud of this. You encourage this when you say that those with the voice should get what they want and those that aren't organized should not touch illegal scans and should just wait until the official providers feel there is "enough demand".
I am well-versed on business and how an entity can say "don't read illegally, but wait for us to give you the official". I pay for my volumes , but I won't justify their practice or advocate like many of those that they choose to campaign for them. Everyone knows the guys that are fans that get picked to promote these companies and become almost puppet like
They've had digital platforms since 2012, so they were well aware of the market overseas.
Being aware of it and being able to do something about it are two different beasts that, in Japan, require facts, numbers, and voices in order to start change. It's not easy, but it's not for lack of want to advance.
Being aware of it and being able to do something about it are two different beasts that, in Japan, require facts, numbers, and voices in order to start change. It's not easy, but it's not for lack of want to advance.
Yet, they choose to eliminate the source that can provide the product for groups that lack those numbers. Those same sources that have helped the fanbase grow. Allowing the illegal sources to continue would, in a way, help those numbers and voices increase.
You do sort of feel bad for the people who have to deal with the fan outrage. Like hey look at this olive branch we're extending, only to be bowled over by the feedback that the fans who are used to getting the whole thing how they want it when they want it essentially viewed their whole present business plan as a decent start but not much else. One wants to give a couple of fingers and the other wants to devour the whole body bones and all, hard to reach a satisfying compromise on that one.
Good stuff. Acknowledgement on that level is massive.
Being vocal about it has forced their hand to issue not just a statement, but a graphic? Wow.
I'd say the impression is loud and clear and has hit the ears of everyone who needs to be aware. What I can't say (even understanding policies over here) is whether or not it would be proper at this point to keep up the pressure. Anything further in Western cultures would eventually cause the presiding force to fold in which case I'd say, keep it up. However, once it reaches a certain point -in Japanese business- relations might be cut indefinitely. I'm not saying that will or has happened here but it's something that is a thing here.
At this point, the point has been made and hopefully they're continuing to work behind the scenes slooooooowly towards expansion. While this graphic says 'will not' it still reads 'at this moment' which isn't closing any doors on the future. Wow, whatta fanbase!!!

What you mean by "graphic" ?
They bothered to photoshop and image instead of just twitter text.
Mangaplus is making a reader survey currently. Those who wish an earlier release can take this opportunity to say it
I don't know if it is a bug but it seems only available from the application. That's not really clever frol them I would say
By the way, there is now an option for image quality in the setting, but I couldn't really see a difference myself.

Is viz access included?
And are anon readers considered as users ?
Wild that Australia didn't even crack the top 20. But then, I have very few non-internet friends who read manga, so I guess it tracks.
So nice to see so much latam and Spain there.
I'm surpirsed France is only at 15. I thought the French were huge on Manga in general, at least more so than Germany.
