@uniaka:
Bonney does feel like a mixture of luffy and nami. Then again, big mom feels like that too. So bonney is the perfect big mom replacement, people even used to think that bonney is the daughter of big mom for a while.
Bonney is a mixture of many possible connections, at this point it is pretty weird.
There was/is the Whitebeard and Ace thing(her crying when WB got accused of betraying his allies makes no sense otherwise), then we saw her ship which is a cake which people thought looked similar to BM ships, and then out of nowhere we got Kuma.
And in der the end it might lead to nothing, considering the 5 year plan… -

I highly doubt Oda would have her tied to so many characters and not have a flashback, it just doesn’t make any sense, she’s obviously super important
Again I don’t think Oda will keep good on his five year plan because there’s just to many loose threads to connect

While possible, the entire scene was a reaction of every Supernova shown to Whitebeard, seems weird to only let her react to something else, but not impossible i guess
-
Blackbeard has no connection to Kuma, but does to both WB and Ace heavily. So the entire thing about her finding someone in the New World because all of this is his fault does not work unless she coincidentally ran into Blackbeard while searching for either Dragon or Vegapunk and it´s just a big misdirection, which narrative-wise makes no sense since that misdirection holds no weight, we are not invested in her character

That's true but with her reaction towards Kuma at Marijois it seems more likely that her reaction during Marineford also was concerning Kuma.
As for the second point: I don't think she was searching for Blackbeard. How would she find him anyways? On the other hand Blackbeard randomly runs into people all the time. He also seemed to know how important she was to the WG (maybe something he learned during his short Shichibukai period? )

That was the assumption back then, before we found out that she's related to Kuma. In hindsight, it seems obvious that she was crying for Kuma, not Whitebeard.

"It's all his fault" seems to be aimed at Vegapunk, not Blackbeard. That Blackbeard and Bonney met seem more like fate than anything Bonney planned.

I might remember this wrong and would have to check this when I have access to the chapter in question again but I'm quite sure that when Bonney was captured by Teach he actually said to him that it is all his fault. Like your intretation of this entire situation though. Might aswell all be a big red hering if Bonney makes no clear and direct accusation at Teach.

You should check it again. It's Chapter 595. In the translation I'm checking, she yels "she will never forgive you", but when Akainu has already arrived, so she may be speaking to Akainu/marines/WG, rather than to Blackbeard, who has already left.
Every Bonney appearance at this point is very ambiguous. It was only after the Reverie chapters that her link to Kuma was revealed, thus changing how we perceive the Marineford scenes in hindsight.
Bonney saying "it's all his/her fault" happens way earlier in chapter 581, when she declares she's going to hunt "him/her" down in the New World.

She could be pissed at them for both WB and Kuma, it doesn't have to be exclusive. Kuma was in a better shape in the war than what he was at Mariejois. It makes sense that she chased BB for causing the war in the first place and being the man who dealt/attempted to deal the final blow to WB and stole his DF. It also makes sense that she's mad at the WG, may be at that time she didn't even know Kuma was a lost cause. Maybe he met her one last time like he did with Rayleigh and possibly Dragon(since he seems to know what's with Kuma from what he said to Evankov[even damned Robin knows something but she didn't say anything about him when Franky mentioned him on their reunion under the sea, she just had a thought bubble] ).

Seeing Yamato in color on the cover of WSJ makes me think she really has a good chance to join. Original enough IMO.
Plus, Oda choosing to feature her seems to be a good indicator that her importance to this arc will at least grow a lot in the future chapters. Right now she's just one of many side characters. Exciting to see.
-
Good chapter for both Yamato and Carrot fans imo.
Carrot finally got a plot thread, an indication that she has things to do in this arc other than being a sidekick to Nami. The Carrot fan crew correctly predicted she would want revenge against Perospero. Still not conclusive evidence of being a strawhat, but one must first become a major arc character if they want to be a series long character.
Yamato didn't get much in the chapter per se, other than Oda continuing to remind us that they are relevant with the weekly Momo chasing panel. The Jump cover is the big thing, though. Not only Yamato is deemed important enough to be shown alongside Luffy in the magazine itself, but finally got a color scheme, with a hair color that makes them unique compared to strawhats, and one that I particularly enjoyed (the red, blue and white just fit together), feeling more well designed than the rainbow hairs we have been getting for other characters lately.

Yamato’s color scheme and being on the SJW cover is a big plus for her joining but carrot also gets her own time to shine getting revenge for Pedro which is a huge plus for her joining too

Carrot Fans, we are nearing the Endgame now. I guess it will be Carrot and Wanda vs Perosperos.
I like the colors Oda gave Yamato, very unique in the series. Also Oda seems to have made some slight changes to her face so that it looks a little different from Nami, I just hope that he also tries to do that in actual manga panels and keeps it consistently different. One thing I don't like in the cover is her noodle arms, really wish she would be more muscular considering that she seems like a strong melee brawler but Oda just gave her his usual barbie doll figure.
Something about this chapter that I didn't like was once again Oda rushing through things: What was up with the whole Perosperos and Marco team up? First hint at it in a panel only for it to not be relevant in the end. And then the panel with Carrot, there are just so many things unexplained. Where did Wanda suddenly come from? Why is she not on top with the other Minks and how did she even find Carrot in all this chaos (remember Carrot and Nami were chased by Big Mom and only ended up there because they were captured)? In fact where are the two of them even? How could Carrot have possibly seen Perosperos? They are inside a huge skull and didn't even know that Perosperos was on the way. Or can we count this as one more point for her lookout role (not serious with this). I really hope that Oda isn't rushing through this just to hit a moment for chapter 1000 or to be on track for the five year plan.

As for Kyarotto, she's inevitably going to lose, but I'm interested in this fight since it could also be the very first time she ever shows interest in the Dawn, or at least a bit more about her past.
And as for Yamato, those colors are unique, yeah well maybe a bit too unique, overly unique actually, it went cross the border of uniqueness, that's waaaay too much for actual SH standards.
But I like that her outfit is red and white, kinda the Japanese flag, what the WSJ cover tells me, is that she's being setup to be the next Trafalgar Law.So we're likely having her a couple of arcs hanging around with the SH's, but never joining officialy.
-
lol people will come up with any argument
-
Yamato is too unique in a crew that features a 3 meter tall skeleton musician fencer with an afro.
-
lol people will come up with any argument
Make your argument or leave it alone. Don't come in here just to make fun.
-
Franky got light blue in the countdown, all but officially confirmed from Oda himself now that Jinbe is brown.
-
I'm tempted to edit my vote to Yamato just to spite all the lol looks like Nami memers. But my long term commitment to none of the above is too well rooted by now
-
I've been saying for a long time that Carrot would go after Perospero, this chapter just confirmed it.
About Yamato, as a mysterious character that was introduced very late in an arc, it was obvious he'd have some importance ahead, no need of a Jump Cover to hint at it.
These latest developments didn't change anything for me. I still think Jinbe is the only one joining in Wano.
-

I’ve got to be honest, I think it’s the exact opposite problem
After a seven level transformating Reindeer with a blue nose cool hat and broken antler, a self made cyborg with popeye arms that have stars on them a cyan pompadour Metal nose three chins and is constantly wearing a Hawaiian shirt and speedo, a super tall gentleman Skelton with an Afro and a cracked skull that can open up, and a blue whale shark fishman who happens to be a former Shichibukai
After all those I’d say the problem is Carrot and Yamato simply aren’t diverse or unique enough to be the last member, although I do think they both have a chance
-
So nice to see the glare finally acknowledged. I’m excited to see where this leads.
I also loved the parallel of how she and Luffy were running at the same pace, the same direction. I really hope Luffy gets to see at least a bit of what Carrot can do.
But I’m actually bothered by two things. First, the fact Carrot slips away just to have her revenge is, I feel, kinda not what her main priority should be. It’s the best chance she’ll have, of course, but what compelled her to just drift on in the first place?
Second, the fact that Wanda’s along for the ride kinda throws a wrench into things. Carrot works best when she has to face problems without her Mink mentors. That’s the whole reason why Pedro pushing her on without him was so powerful. With Wanda there, I’m worried it’ll take some of Carrot’s impetus to stand on her own, especially if they both go Sulong to take on Peros.
Neither of those are deal-breakers, though. I trust that if she is going to be a Straw Hat, her vengeance and Wanda being along for it have their purpose in it. And there’s the small matter of how she doesn’t specify who she’s going after. Naturally Peros seems to be the main target, but avenging Pedro could just as easily mean going after both Peros and Big Mom herself. Crazy to imagine Carrot going against her, but if Big Mom goes down to anyone, it seems like it should be in service to Pedro whose life she stole and caused all this. Luffy could even burst in to finally take care of BM while Carrot deals with Peros.
In any case, I’m glad we’ve finally reached the point where Carrot will have her time to shine. Whatever happens, I’m looking forward to her years of development paying off.

Jimbei's too fat to fit in the train.
-
Robby you’ve been saying for a while we need a character with a white color scheme and now it turns Yamato has that, does that mean you think he’s more likely to join?
-
Jimbei's too fat to fit in the train.
Nah Sea Train laws forces Fishmen & Merfolks to the back unfortunately.
Its what Jinbe and co are fighting aganist.
-
Not sure about the train, but the Sunny is changing size all the time, so no probs for Jinbei boy to pass throught those doors
-

More like Oda keeps forgetting about consistent character size and does jack all when it's more aesthetically convenient, but yeah, not really a problem.
-
Robby you’ve been saying for a while we need a character with a white color scheme and now it turns Yamato has that, does that mean you think he’s more likely to join?
I've been saying for ages that white, purple, or red hair would up someone's chances. And Yamato has both white hair (with purple tint!) AND red horns. So yeah, I'd say that ticks off the "different from the crew" box. Managed to hit all three! The gradient is pretty unique too.
Oda also seems to be making effort to make her face a bit different from Nami's, but if that effort extends past the one giant cover image (and how he handles that hair in future pieces) remains to be seen.
I'm still not fully on board but I cast my vote a while ago so.
Next few chapters are pretty much make or break it for Carrot.
And since the scabbards are about to fall and Yamato is bound to catch up and interact with Momo soon, that SHOULD affect the "I am literally Oden" gag and hopefully transition to just "I want to be LIKE Oden". Orochi flashback is likely at the very least so maybe get more coverage there.
-
It also looks like Yamato has really subtle make up on. Her eyes are pretty striking too. I think the looks like Nami thing is more or less dead now.
As far as unique designs go, Yamato has the highest chances in like ever.
We really need like one character moment to make it happen.
Edit: Oh and white, purple, blue and red in the colors of her outfit? Neat
-
Why does Yamato want to leave? Because he's been oppressed.
Was it Wano oppressing him? No, it was Kaido.
The reason Yamato wants to leave Wano is because all he's ever known is being restricted through those cuffs. They're gone, and eventually Kaido will be, as well. And the whole reason I think Yamato exists is to address the close-minded guilt that existed with the generations of the Kurozumi clan, the Minks and Kawamatsu, and to an extent the Kozuki clan being dragged through the mud for 20 years. Being the child of Kaido, Yamato will be be just the next person at the mercy of the people's hatred if it's revealed who Kaido really was all along. But when that's overcome, whether by Luffy or Momo clearing Yamato of any guilt, it will remove the main reason he wants to escape.
Could that allow Yamato free to leave just because he wants to explore the world? Sure. But that's a matter of going out for the sake of a dream, rather than leaving on the first available ship to escape oppression like what's currently his motivation. And I still think Yamato won't be as eager to leave with Kaido gone, and will have more of a place on Wano as part of Momo's court, considering the two are destined to confront each other and come to an understanding.
-
I think it would be pretty cool to have a lady traditional melee fighter on the Straw Hat group. Nami and Robin can be pretty powerful and cool of course, but it would also be cool to see a woman on the crew attack like this:
-
Like some people have already said it looks like Jinbeis color will be brown. Can anyone tell me why that might mean and how brown relates to Jinbei? Of all the colors I have never seen brown theorized for him.
Also Brook is officially black & white but he is mostly shown with black when the crew colors are relevant for outfits and the chapter countdown. The white part is just because he is a skeleton. So does this open up the color white for either Carrot or Yamato?
-
just because he wants to explore the world?.
We don't know why Yamato wants to go out exactly, and that's a big deal since it could eventually come up with something like "Yeah, I always wanted to go to God Valley(or something), cause it says in Oden's diary, that place is awesome". So that we'll know she's actually going to ride temporarily.
Cause yeah, its hard to imagine that 1-Luffy is not picking up someone from Wano, and 2-Oden's diary won't play a role in the outside world, where the current owner must get out to let some scummy villains know of its existence.

Am I a joke to you?
Also Brook is officially black & white but he is mostly shown with black when the crew colors are relevant for outfits and the chapter countdown. The white part is just because he is a skeleton. So does this open up the color white for either Carrot or Yamato?
Brook will most oftenly be represented or wear both black and white, it just happens that sometimes it doesn't work well with the surrounding enviroment and Oda would pick one, OR use gray, since its a combination of both.
-

It's been theorized, but more in a "please don't let it be brown"-manner. It's kind of… on the nose, if you ask me. Given the context of Fishman history and the real life parallels and stuff...
On the other hand, blue would be terrible as well
!
Personally I thought Silver would be the most fitting color, considering his experience and his grey strands.

The anime made that silver. Oda always has it gold, along with his muttonchop things and eyebrows.

I posted about this with some picks on another thread. I'm pretty sure the brown is Jinbe's natural hair color.
It's the color of his hair. The black seems to be Jinbe's version of our hair graying for some reason, at least that's how it appears to me. Note that the picture of Jinbe as a child that Oda drew in one of the SBS has completely light hair and in the flashbacks, his tips are light, while the roots are black. The anime fucked this up for years, basically until Whole Cake. Oda, though, has been pretty consistent with this color, though occasionally it seems to have a bit more gold in it. This is something I've thought about for a decade, lol, so it was nice to see them finally get it right in the anime.

Is it bad I entered this thread to see if anyone commented on that lol

The vibe I'm getting from Yamato is that his current situation will lead to him bonding with Momo. Son of Oden and son of Kaido. I wonder if they will learn some kind of lesson from each other.
From Carrot, this chapter makes my prediction more likely. I've said many times that her leftover purpose in the story is to see Pedro avenged. I knew she was going to confront Perospero. The big question is if she can do it herself, or if one of the Straw Hats will step in. Sorry, Carrot fans, but I think it's Sanji who's going to save her and defeat Peros. There are two red flags in this chapter: first, Wanda magically appeared with Carrot, thus making Carrot no longer the only mink around. Second, Carrot left the battle behind to actively seek vengeance. This to me screams the kind of uncontrolled emotion that, in storytelling, usually leads to one's downfall.
-

Huh, true. Shows how little impact Oda's offical coloring has if one is mostly exposed to the anime and merch versions
!
It looks better tbh, but Gold is fine too.
@andre curious theory, I like it!

I still don't buy that her purpose in the story is to only see Pedro is avenged. It's been foreshadowed since she saw Perospero on the Sea Slug during the escape from Whole Cake Island that she was going to have to face him again. Like, her only purpose in the story is to fulfil some revenge plotline that wasn't really necessary to the story overall? It might contribute to character growth and character development overall, but was it really necessary for the plot if that's the case? With all this stuff going on, especially in Wano? As I've said before, I don't buy it. Especially since that means she does nothing with Pedro's last words regarding the Dawn of the World. Fighting Perospero doesn't answer that. Opening Wano's borders and "bringing the Dawn" to that country is a prelude of what's to come and will paint a better picture for it. It will also be that decisive moment where Carrot moves in the story from there. Either she stays or goes (though I wonder why she'd leave to begin with).
EDIT: Though I'm genuinely curious: Where the hell was Wanda this entire time? Like she pops up outta nowhere.

Anything left for Carrot can be easily fulfilled without her joining the crew. Oda has given us a general sense for how the endgame of One Piece will play out and part of that endgame will be a gigantic war involving everyone Luffy has ever allied with fighting alongside him. All of these characters will be present at that battle fighting to bring about the "Dawn of the World". The minks will be there, as will Carrot, so she'll get contribute to the dawn one way or the other, Who joins Luffy's crew is just a question of who's going to Laugh Tale.

the Dawn of the World.
For there to be a story line regarding the Dawn, Carrot should first show any interest on it.
-
I still don't buy that her purpose in the story is to only see Pedro is avenged.
That's not her only purpose, it's her leftover purpose. She had three purposes, IMO:
- To witness Pedro's death to give a proper emotional feedback to the readers;
- To show the readers what minks are capable of, including gliding, electro and sulong;
- To see Pedro avenged, thus fulfilling Pedro's arc in his stead.
Once all those purposes are fulfilled, her arc is complete. There has been no build up of other purposes at all. If she were meant to have more story, including joining, I think she's have gotten a lot of setup in Wano. She was, instead, neglected. She's a WCI character, she's in Wano because here is where WCI will be finally resolved (which is one reason I think Capone will show up as well).
EDIT: Though I'm genuinely curious: Where the hell was Wanda this entire time? Like she pops up outta nowhere.
She appeared last in the Sunny. She was in the shot where the SHs hug Jinbe, but was cut out due to page space. I think she was meant to have been around all this time, which is weird, as she wasn't showcased in any of the few Carrot shots since we arrived in Onigashima.

Except that doesn't answer the question of why she needed to know. Of course the Straw Hats will achieve that, but all of that could have been relayed to the audience without her knowledge. The simple fact is that Carrot has no specified end point because she literally said upon being discovered on the Sunny that she always wanted an adventure. Whether she accomplishes this with the crew or not is irrelevant since that is what we know so far. If the Dawn was that inconsequential to Carrot, this knowledge wouldn't have been brought to her attention. The inevitability is that she will find out and I only speculate she's going to join is because she:
- Is genuinely curious of the world outside Zou.
- Has no glaring obligations or really a reason to go back to Zou (She stowed away once already, what makes you think she won't do it again?).
- Has been seen frequently with the Straw Hats as opposed to her own tribe.
- Has to justify why she has been in the story for this long. A side-story of a revenge plotline cannot be an endpoint.
If the Dawn of the World was so obvious, why does Carrot act surprise knowing this? The Mink Tribe already know of their connection and "brotherhood" with the Kozuki Clan, yet she doesn't know what this event is? Why are the Mink Tribe connected with Kozuki Clan (because Oden was surprised about it, too)? So many questions, so little time. Some of them don't really even require her knowledge, but some things need to be addressed soon.

What is leftover is her knowing about the Dawn of the World. That has already been stated. It's what she does with this knowledge I feel where she'll go in the story. Primarily because that needs to justify the length of time she's been around. Her vengeance/revenge plotline is nowhere near the level it was for Kyros/Toy Soldier, whose narrative was completely tied to Dressrosa and the events that unfolded. From the downfall of King Riku's reign to being turned into a toy and being forgotten by everyone to his wife being killed by Diamante to watching over his daughter for 10 years while she never knew he was her father the entire time. At the end of the day, his endpoint was helping free the island of Dressrosa from Doflamingo and letting him be with his daughter. That's all he wanted: to shed the blood and darkness from hsi past and live peacefully with Rebecca.
When you see Carrot, what is exactly that endpoint? Where is the endpoint exactly that points she'll go back to Zou? Because it glaringly obvious she'd rather be with the Straw Hats than the Mink Tribe right now.
-
When you see Carrot, what is exactly that endpoint? Where is the endpoint exactly that points she'll go back to Zou?
Pedro avenged, Wano saved. She bids farewell to her friends and promises to help them again when they meet. She had enough adventure for now. The Sunny goes, she stays with her people.
Because it glaringly obvious she'd rather be with the Straw Hats than the Mink Tribe right now.
I see nothing "glaring obvious" about her wanting to be with the crew rather than the minks. She's not an outcast, she's not an odd one that feels out of place, she has no big dream that requires her to be away from her tribe.
She's an young girl that embarked out of curiosity in what she expected to be a fun afternoon adventure. There's no moment in her 200-chapters presence that hint at her wanting to leave Zou for long.
IMO, if she was going to join, she'd have her role expanded during Wano. Instead, she was left in the background until she's needed to fulfill her established arc. No, I don't think she's joining.
-

Honestly, its wishful thinking that she has had enough of adventure. If she wanted to stay with her people, don't know why she isn't up there fighting the person that ravaged their homeland. Where's that obligation now?
If it wasn't glaringly obvious, what is the reason she went with WCI that couldn't have been done by both Pedro and Pekoms? It seems like this discussion has been trying to paint Carrot as a tool for the Mink Tribe and used to display their abilities when, once again, Pedro and Pekoms served those purposes. I said years back that I always found it odd that Oda had Carrot come for seemingly no reason. If there's no justification for that, she shouldn't be with the crew right now. Because what was the point? If she had no lingering storyline, why are we speculating where her endpoint is? Did she ever say she was done with adventuring? Did Shishillian or Inuarashi ever explain why Carrot should go with the Straw Hat crew instead of them during the raid? There has honestly been no indication that she's done adventuring, when even as early as entering Wano she shows excitement over a whirlpool.
So as I've said, the story does need to justify why she's been here this long.

Except that doesn't answer the question of why she needed to know.
She didn't.
Pedro prepared her for his death, she needed to know how important the Strawhats are, and that it's worth risking your life for them.
The important part for Carrot was the time the Minks and Kozuki clan waited for them, and that's what she replied to. That's what shows her how important the Strawhats are.
She doesn't know anything about the Dawn, so that part was not for her, it was for the audience. She doesn't care about the Dawn, yet.
She might get interested after she learns more about it, but even then it's not necessary for her to join them.Talking about wishful thinking…
