I can't deny that the hype and climatic tension did kinda stumble backwards after this staunt of Law, but the chapter still felt intense (more so than most executive fights) and Luffy's final intervention is simply grand. We already knew Law wasn't done for anyway, so I'd rather something good came out of it and it just did. Seeing him go all out, ready to strike even with a missing arm, was awesome.
The last page, however, feels like he gave everything in that final Countershock and used up his last strength, leaving him too exhausted to do anything significant.
At least I hope that's how it goes - Law's had more than enough screen time by now, time to tell a story about Straw Hat Luffy. -

Last week I participated in the filler vs. no filler discussion, and my stand was that how could anyone think last week was filler? It had a great Law moment that actually clicked with me, Luffy's anger was getting to the boiling point, and the cage started shrinking. It was urgent, it was emotional, it was good stuff, not filler in any sense.
This week makes last week's predicament and drama invalid by page 4, Law was doing all that pretty badass send off as a cover up for some more absolutely insane shenanigans, so the emotional impact is gone, and what we get in exchange is some "glory to the Law!" panels that, yeah, looked cool, but 1-as Daz is complaining, all Law did was incredibly vague in the end. What's "destroy you from the inside", if a bit of string stitching did the job? 2-Law is just exhausted now, so we can expect more double teaming, something last week was a no-go, finally. No longer happening, as we've seen, Law can just go at it ad infinitum no matter what happens to him. So does Doffy. Do we do this for all eternity?
I mean, I guess on a visceral level this capter gave as a badass Law that's outbadassed by Doffy. Problem? We've been through this before during chapters 768 and 769, and they were better, on time, and ended on the perfect note. Law's "imma dying - no wait I can still show some more badasness, now imma dying - no, wait, I still have some more haxxness in me to show to the world, now imma dying - no wait, bullets and missing limbs are merely scratches to me" just got on a whole new level with this chapter, and as I've said, the end of the chapter leaves him. . .¿frustrated? while last week left him dead or nearly dead. Luffy last week was super pissed, this week he's badass calm. Last week Trébol was an unknown factor, this week he's a lil bitch that's in the way.
I said this was fillerish, but looking at it, it isn't. We actually went to a less tense, less climactic, less dramatic situation than what we had before.
Don't think the chapter is filler, it will be great read it in vol format .
Also did you call trebol a unkonw factor ?
He was always a liitle bitch, Law almost one shot him if it was not for Don he would have be done a few chapters back. -

I think this chapter was needed to level the battlefield and give luffy a chance against Dofly.
also to give a much bigger role to law in Doflamingo 's downfall.also, I don ' t see how Trebol's. credibility was affected.. we already knew the big gap between captain/shichibukai and the rest… just like Doflamingo almost played with sanji, luffy must be able to. do. with trébol... Otherwise he would not stand a chance vs doffy

Ok, so here's how I think events went down.
In 769, Law throws up the massive Room when Luffy breaks the roof and distracts Doflamingo.
In 780, Law goads Doflamingo into losing control and shooting him blindly. After the first shot, Law turns away to conceal his face and switches bodies, but not clothes, with a random goon from down below. He then waits and tries to recover a bit. When Luffy comes on to the roof and begins fighting Doflamingo, Law takes the opportunity to switch back with the goon but continues playing dead. As Luffy leans over him to check on him. Law quickly whispers the plan.
In 781, Luffy attacks Doflamingo and Law switches places with Luffy, ending up right in front of Doflamingo with his charged Gamma Knife ready to go.
The part that bothers me the most is that it's not just Doflamingo who didn't notice Law's Room, it's also everyone on the king's plateau looking right in his direction. Violet even thinks he's lost while his Room is still clearly up.

Well, the chapter really shows how desperate Law is to put the final blow on Dofla .All these years seeking for revenge, holding Luffy back, crawling towards his enemy, and then his attack failed… cue his facepalm of deep disappointment.
Pretty intense if you asked me. -
Ok I just have to give my opinion on this chapter wouldnt feel right without saying anything.
This is probably the first time since I was little and started reading One Piece that I felt like I was reading a different manga a "cheaper" less well constructed manga. This entire chapter felt not SHOUNEN but as CHEESY SHOUNEN.
Let me start
COVER STORYThis is for me, I must say hands down the dullest cover story of them all and beats even the likes of Caribou's one. It is dragging so much and I just wish this was the last page of it.
CHAPTER
We have talked about the cage shrinking the last chapter and I said it then that this is becoming to repetitive of a thing in this manga and is thus taking away from the unique and suspense factor. Also the way it was done, just "random" timing of starting the cage shrinking is off. Had Doflamingo for instance learned that the princess was taken away and he said: "Ok then I will bring her back to me by starting to shrink the cage", or by some kind of trigger, it would all have been more logical and therefor executed better, but in this way, just randomly starting the counter just to try and add some extra suspense, I dont like it.
So yeah we get some panels of buildings being cut to pieces, people saving themselves a nice touch of Oda to remind us, that there are people like those pirates and guys who were tied down, who also now have a problem with this…all good, but we basically get 33% of the entire chapter devoted to Doflamingo explaining to SH that all people will die and all the people realizing that the cage is shrinking. I dont see the need for that. Their IQ is above room temperature, show one page of people , destruction, some of the protagonists noticing it, we get the idea, they know...
And then the "magic trick" of this chapter, the still alive Law which was at least intention of Oda to make us and Violette believe anyway.
He uses some new move containing Gamma rays and destroying Doflas internal organs while at it, he was mantaining room all this time at the cost of his life expectancy which no one was able to notice. All of this feels so fast and in a way poorly executed that I for a moment got the association with some of the Naruto chaters. But what is worse is the things which come after it.
From the totally useless Trebol who is getting put aside like a 5 years old who is constantly told to go back to his corner and quite frankly if Trebol shows any kind of resistance I will actually be "angry" because the guy had a chance to show it by now and if he was shown as inferior better be consistent and just keep it at that. But what is worse is the Miraculous recovery of Doflamingo which basically sums up the entire CHEESY SHOUNEN chapter I wrote at the begining, the only shounen bit I liked was Luffy casually stopping Doflamingo's killing move, but how can you explain Dofy executing it so poorly and Luffy stopping him so effortlessly is something which is not within my domain and I wont even try itInconsistent, with the poorly executed magic trick of X character is not dead, to hax powers left and right.
Really disliked this chapter and I do hope the rest of you feel completely opposite in that regard, I really do.

Also, the biggest change from last chapter is that Law's spirit is now broken. Law just threw his most deadly attack at Doflamingo and collapsed from exhaustion but the bastard just stood right back up. He's crying because no matter what he does he can't bring down the man who killed his hero.
Luffy has consistently gotten most serious not when someone he cares about is beaten or injured but when they feel helpless and hopeless. Law just reached that point.

You should note that Law's giving Doffy the middle finger last chapter was not a "cover up" for his actions in this chapter. The emotional impact should still be there for you. The body-swap and gamma knife in 781 were a on-the-fly survival strategy. Law, after giving the middle finger, was shot. He then quickly notices he survives the first shot, and swaps out (cleverly hiding the new body under his large coat). He swaps back in and pretends to be dead, waiting for his next opening. It's not like in Law's mind he was giving his last middle finger ready to die; he was still very much looking for a way out of his predicament, motivated to fight back.
The tension in this chapter is in how now, with the advantage again, Law's trump card attack actually fails to kill Doflamingo. We're given evidence that for Law, the gamma knife was his sure-fire way of finishing Doflamingo off. Since he thinks he's really killing Doflamingo, of course he regurgitates the same speech as before. He wants Doflamingo to remember clearly, in his dying moments, exactly why Law brought about his end. Unfortunately, Doflamingo once more shows his incredible aptitude for survival. We see Law scream and wince at his attack's failure, cursing the winds with "damn it!"s. This chapter shows Law at his most desperate and most vulnerable moment–at rock bottom.
As for Trebol, this chapter in no way discredits his role or strength in the story. The previous bunch of chapters have shown that Trebol is very much concerned for the well-being of Doflamingo, with him shouting "Doffy!" every time Doflamingo is hit. This chapter, we see Trebol give Doflamingo an eerie verbal strength, reminding Doflamingo of his position as king. In the desperate moment when Doffy is trapped with Law in the ROOM, Trebol is focused solely on getting to Doffy. Luffy knocks him aside, yes, but this is because Trebol wasn't paying attention to Luffy. What's more, we're given no reason to believe that's the end for Trebol. It was a simple kick that stopped him from immediately reaching Doflamingo. That has absolutely no bearing on whether Trebol is inept or "a lil bitch".
The situation is as tense and climactic as last week. All this week showed was Law's final stand and final failure, his desperation, and Luffy's overtaking of his struggle. I've already commented before on 780's thread on how this passing-of-the-fight from Law to Luffy makes thematic sense in the arc's story.

I think it was more rhetorical than literal. What Law means is that the room was just so big that Doflamingo and Trebol simply did not notice they were in fact inside it the whole time.

If you think that's a stretch, you can maybe find solace in thinking about the timing of things. We know Law last uses a room in 769 when he slices the castle ramparts. Immediately afterward, in-universe, he loses his arm, presumably suffers a few more hits, is fired at by Trebol, gives the middle finger, and is shot. This time span is not very long, and so the "invisible" room must have been created in between the loss of his arm and the body swap, which in the story is not a very long time (minutes, maybe), giving some credence that nether Trebol or Doffy noticed it. And if any outsiders saw it but didn't explicitly point it out in a panel, it really means nothing for us readers. It's not like those observers would've informed Doffy and Trebol.

Law has to poke the heart out first (like with Smoker) to switch it with something else. We've never been shown that Law can switch things that he can't see. And so looks like Law merely went for the move he thought would mean a quicker death for Doflamingo. If he poked the heart out instead of using gamma knife, Doffy might've quickly simply retrieved his heart. We've been shown that Vergo was fast enough to react to a heart swap, and given how quick Doffy reacts to things, we could easily assume he would quickly do something to retrieve his heart after having it poked out.

With the same reasoning, Luffy kicked non-chalant Sai when was fighting against Ideo, to go fight more seriously with Chinjao. They had their hakis kinda matched with Luffy being somewhat superior, but recently the same Sai kicked Chinjao kinda non-chalant and won over him with just one attack.
I know that the situations are different and other things, but the point is that when someone is hit while caught by surprise they are at their weakest state (and it happened in the same chapter today with Law surprise attack, or even when Kyros beheaded the clone string!).

Just so that its not all sour grapes from me, I will say that the art is still excellent, with a lot of oomph to all the blows.
I liked all Trebols lines of "Thats not how a king should act!" and "thats my king!". It really underlines Trebol being Doffys senior, and probably mentor. Even if he has lost a lot of dignity, I'm still holding out hope for a last minute backstabbing of Doffy or something, or at least an extra layer of their relationship revealed.
Also, Doffy telling Law "what he wanted to hear" was a good villain moment. I don't think Laws vendetta against Doffy has been handled in the best way, but in the heat of that moment near the end, it was effective.So there are good things, i just wanted to get that out there.
There are also very very dumb things like Doflamingos line that "I'll just make another country!!!!"

If Oda wanted to absolutely destroy our expectations? Ok, then let Law kill Doffy. No one expects that. It'd killed off all the hype regarding Luffy vs. Doffy, but it would've been different and original.
But this, this was. . .yeah, this was fillerish. This added nothing on an emotional level, was more glorofied Law pandering, and ultimately did nothing for his character, for Dofla's character or for Luffy's character.
If anything? Luffy's motivation is weaker than last week. Law is in better shape than last week.

And yeah, of all the possibilities regarding Trébol, Oda chose the single worst one. Not even one shoted. Just "shut the fuck up and stay aside".
Wow, disagree with you whole heartedly dude. I thought this chapter was amazing and racketed the tension up even more for me. The way I see it, this is a toll to pay to even be able of thinking of bringing down Doflamingo. You go holy shit, he's taken THIS much damage and he's STILL brushing it off? It hypes him the fuck up, I just love these fights where characters go above and beyond their limits to beat an enemy and it's STILL NOT ENOUGH because the enemy is THAT strong.Thats queezing out of all your energy, going wayyyyyy beyond anything expected and still failing.
Also, did you really want Law taken out without giving a significant contribution to Doflamingo's defeat? He got Red Hawked and Injection shotted but Doffy seemed to have gotten over them, the Gamma Knife is something that looks like it's gonna stick though.
Also I'm even more hyped for Luffy vs Doflamingo. That last shot unffffff, and I don't know about you but I'm more hyped for a protagonist that can take on an emotional manipulator like Doffy with a calm expression opposed to just faling for his mind games and rushing headlong into him. If Luffy is to beat Doflamingo, he needs to keep his cool. Opposed to last week where he was angry and all I could think "He has no plan or composure and he's still gonna beat him sonehow? Lame" I prefer this much more.
I agree with the Trebol thing but let's see how it goes, he simply got kicked away when he wasn't looking and the Law countershock thing probably only took an instant so he couldn't have time to do anything. Oda must be saving Trebol for something if he's still around at the end game.

Good old fashioned blunt forced beating it is then.
Perhaps Oda made Doffy get that last few smacks from Law to even up the fight a bit, otherwise there was little point to the chapter really.
Luffy has taken some good hits and now so has Doffy, makes me wonder if Doffy's injuries will limit his string use in the fight as he has to maintain the first aid on his own internal organs.

He just made a huge room to switch the hearts of some SHs(sanji,franky,nami,chopper) and short amount of time. It's the best attack law has, and that fact he din't even think to use it on DD sounds like PIS.

And yet in this chapter we see Usopp freaking out that Law is dead. It's possible he's just overreacting and not thinking clearly but it still feels contrived. You're right that bystander knowledge of the Room wouldn't affect the events on the rooftop, but logic and consistency are being sacrificed in exchange for suspense and the thrill of the reveal.
We're at least in agreement about the rough order of events and the time of the body switch. Not sure if you have a specific time in mind for the activation of the Room or if you're just laying out the possible range of times. It seems to me that the two most likely times for it would be right after Law loses his arm in 769 or immediately before the body switch as Doflamingo is hopefully distracted in just shooting Law. The alatter would fit better into observers' timeline, being between Viola declaring his loss and that panel of Zoro and Usopp reacting, but it also seems a lot more difficult to pull off.

He just made a huge room to switch the hearts of some SHs(sanji,franky,nami,chopper) and short amount of time. It's the best attack law has, and that fact he din't even think to use it on DD sounds like PIS.
Well, that was a personality switch. What I was addressing is why Law hasn't tried to switch out Doflamingo's physical heart and kill him by simply destroying the heart. As to why he doesn't use the personality switch on Trebol and Doffy, your guess is as good as mine. o:

Well I recall in PH that he scanned the marines and teleported all their den den mushis out from underneath their clothes. Though I guess different rules apply for hearts.
It's not so much about objects that he can't see as it is about whole objects. Den den mushis are distinct objects but the heart is part of the human body, and Law has never been shown to be able to Shamble part of an object without first slicing it apart.

And my man Law is not dead, sorry. So what now? If Luffy finishes what's left of DD, will it still count as a solo, or DD was a team up of Luffy and Law?

The whole Birdcage shrinking adds a layer of tension to the situation, but shots of the island and stuff….I know Dressrosa isn't as big as Alabasta, the island in its sister arc, but man, it just feels all the more condensed.
Anyways, Law's not dead. Surprise. Apparently he still had some fight left in him, even making Doflamingo bleed. You can feel the tension between the two, mentioning Corazon and all that....what do I think of the sudden room? I'm a little miffed, but it's seriously not the only time we've seen Law turn the tide with one.
After all of that vigor and punishment, Doflamingo is still ready to go and Law is out of energy. Luffy blocking his stomp was...pretty darn cool.
I wonder how their battle is going to play out. Luffy's scuffled with him enough times to know he's powerful, his fruit is durable, and his haki isn't anything to scoff out. Perhaps he'll think out of the box (or room, hehehe) for this one.
