I hope Trebol does nothing.
A lot people don't like him for his character now (He's one of my favorites) so I would hate to see all these people I see shitting on him magically flip and start singing his praises when they don't actually appreciate his character.
Kinda how I feel about Sanji haters.
Chapter 781: "Long-Cherished Desire"

I don't see why not Luffy one-shotting Trebol isn't an option. Zoro did.
-
It's funny how much opinions can differ.
For me the Donquixote family is the overwhelmingly greatest saving grace of this whole arc and, by far, far, far away the best full cast of antagonists this series has ever had. For me the difference in quality between the Donquixote family and DD himself, and much of the rest of the arc is so great that it teeters on approaching Mass Effect 3 levels.
It's funny you compare it to ME3, knowing how the finale turned out. Just hope the same thing doesn't happen here.
As for Dofla family, they were fun, and somewhat interesting, but they had a shitty momentum and are left looking incompetent for it.
-
I was thinking about that too. Seems like between the birdcage and Pica Dressrosa has taken by far the most property damage of any previous country. It's a much bigger repair job than normal.
Sorta puts a damper on the future celebration party, doesn't it?
(not that it will lol)

What do people think is gonna happen with the 2v1 that has been set up (Doffy/Trebol v Luffy)?
I see a few possibilities.
(1) Someone shows up to take down Trebol (inb4 Robin). I was hoping on Kinemon, but sounds like he isn't going to show up (unless his "isn't that unreasonable" is foreshadowing, but I assume it is just part of his "character"). If you think this, who do you think will show up? I doubt Sabo, since I bet he'll be clashing with Burgess (mostly off-panel).(2) Luffy actually fights them both. He made Trebol look like a scrub this chapter, but then again it was a potshot; in an actual fight, maybe Trebol would be somewhat useful. Furthermore, as I said above, I don't think Luffy used haki to hit him (despite agreeing that colorless haki is a thing), so it may have even been intimidation. But, that being said… Doffy is ultra-hyped. If Luffy 1v2's Doffy, it'll be a big disappointment - it'd be cool, fight wise, but for the sake of consistency Doffy has to nearly beat Luffy by himself.
(3) Trebol gets taken out of the fight for some reason other than being in a fight with someone else. I am thinking two possibilities:
(A) Trebol was MAYBE condescending with the "You're a king, don't fall to your knees!" line, and it has been theorized for some time he is very, very significant. Maybe he'll actually stay out of the fight to test Doffy.
(B) Luffy is gonna jet bazooka his ass off the summit ASAP. I'd like that.Watcha think will happen? Cause I can't see us ACTUALLY getting to the final fight without some panel time being given to Trebol being taken out first.
Toc toc toc!!
Hi Sir, have a minute to talk about Cabbage? Our lord and savior! -
@Zar:
I liked the chapter. I guess I'm one of the few here who loves Law's powers, so every time I get to see them in use is a good time. Maybe it's because they're more than the usual punch-kick-slash formula, there's a little bit of planning to it. I still don't get where he got the countershock moves from however. If he was manipulating the nerves of his opponent, fine, but since it seems to be straight up electricity… it's a bit out there. Not as bad as string clone though.
I'm glad he at least got some considerable damage in. Luffy kicking away Trebol and especially when he stopped Doffy's foot was amazing. Somehow I'm suddenly more pumped now than I was after the fight with Bellamy. I think one of the things that's been nagging me as of late in OP is the lack of "speaking through action instead of words" - the characters can talk all they want and tell us cool stuff, but sometimes you need to see them DO stuff for the weight to really sink in.
There are of course some problems with the chapter as usual, thing that could've been improved in the whole, but I felt the good outweighed the bad so I'm content this time around.
I agree with all of this, 100%.
Law's fruit is "hax" in the same way a wizard in DnD 3/3.5 (arguably other versions) is hax.
Most people who start playing wizard load up on fireballs and lightning bolts and just nuke things. Fun? Maybe. But ANYONE can deal damage - rogues, fighters, druids, barbarians, rangers, even bards and heck let's throw clerics in there too; literally ANYONE.
But the defining characteristic of the wizard is motherfucking tricks. (Are we allowed to use language like that here? I'll censor it if need be!)
Anyone can deal damage, but the wizard can manipulate the world around him to give his team an advantage, then let others mop up the mobs and take all the glory thinking they did the hard work. Battlefield hazard, illusions, scrying, invisibility, conjuring, wards… These are what a wizard does.
That is why I like Law's power. It has some straightforward battle applications, sure. And like the wizard, everyone tends to wanna see Shambles and Fireballs and Injection Shots and Lightning Bolts. But it is the motherfucking trickery of it all that really appeals to me.
Wizards, with good planning and creativity, can be pretty unstoppable at about level 5 or 7 (DnD goes, traditionally, to level 20). A well thought out scheme, deep creative knowledge of your spells, and some mundane trickery (playing dead, for instance; bluffing; just hiding behind some stuff) can give a level 7 wizard a chance against even a level 20 wizard. So are wizards "hax?" Not when most people just throw fireballs with them… or, extending that, not when not everyone can pull off motherfucking tricks.
Law is similar. With planning and creativity, he can be VERY powerful. But it is a matter of earning it. That's why I don't think it's "hax" - not every character could pull it off. And we're seeing the limits in his fruit and in his creativity - he formulated a scheme, and he pulled mother. fucking. tricks. and is still getting wrecked.
I love that.
P.S. This is not to underrate the mundane. Wizards might have "See Invisibility" but that doesn't let him see the rogue hiding behind the wall. This is getting off-topic…

Loved this chapter, badass all around. When Luffy stopped Doflamingo with his leg and stared him down, I came
-
While I agree that the chapter generally (and unfortunately) stumbled backwards on the tension that'd been made by the last few, nothing super bothers me here except for Trebol's treatment.
The fact that Law could still manage what he did, and the fact that Doflamingo stood up at the end, just shows me that they're both really fucking tough and are well-suited to fight against and alongside people like Luffy. The gigantic Room + Law's body swap seems like a fair enough use of his abilities to me, and Gamma Knife honestly just makes me think of Roku-ou-gan (Lucci's "final" move); some sort of shockwave that does hella work on your innards without leaving external injuries. It's vague, but we've seen it before, with Lucci and (to some extent) Kuma's shockwaves too. Not sure why this kind of attack is suddenly being trashed for not being specific enough…?
Doffy tying himself up is one of the more interesting and believable applications of his ability - just being able to suture your organs in a tourniquet kind of way is pretty cool to me, and serves as a decent explanation for him still being in the fight. Fine by me.
Definitely in agreement that the Trebol thing is possibly the worst way Oda could've handled it - one-shotting wouldn't have been cool either, but at least some effort-intensive attack to get him the fuck out of there for a minute or two would've been a lot more satisfying. Alas.
Little things like Luffy's foot-stop (people have mentioned grabbing Arlong's sword as another example) never cease to give me shivers, so I think that was at least the best way the chapter could've ended.
So yeah, a little disappointing, but I'm hoping the conclusion to all of this will be worth this hiccuo.
-
@Myu:
I don't see why not Luffy one-shotting Trebol isn't an option. Zoro did.
Zoro used an ultimate technique and Hardening.
Luffy used a half-assed kick.
I'd love it if he actually knocked out Trebol with it. This arc would end faster.
-
Possibly my favourite panel of the chapter besides Luffy stopping Doffy's foot of course. Law powering up his Counter Shock while talking shit to Doffy, stuff like that just resonates(Rosinantes) with me.
Actually, Doffy probably cared about Corazon and Law more than he admits.
I wholeheartedly agree with this.

This man speaks the truth.

I mean from now on.
Considering how Oda made Luffy look incompetent letting Doffy attack Law jumping out of his combat with Luffy, I can see Luffy pulling a fast Gear 2nd Red Hawk or Elephant finishing Trebol.
I mean If i was Doffy I would have let Luffy be done with it anyway after all his talk about getting down on his knees.
-

Trebol's not going to have more than a few pages dedicated towards his defeat. We all know he's not worth any more than that
-
I feel like just restoring the city is something that isn't really worth spending years of Mansherry's life on. It'll probably be fixed by her, but I feel like someone like Kyros might endorse the altered landscape as a badge of pride for their suffering. Oda also really likes the themes of coming together to heal and rebuild and having the princess just fix everything instantly doesn't seem like his style.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Now for Luffy to stick his hat on Law.
I'm not sure which would be better, Law with two hats stuck on his head or Luffy switching hats and fighting while wearing Law's.
After Doffy falls Luffy should take his shades as a trophy and put them on his hat for all to see.
-
This seems to be what was conveyed in this chapter. At the beginning of the chapter you can clearly tell that the "dead body" is Law, as it has his tattoo and his exact face (the fodder he replaced himself with doesn't look similar enough to Law to confuse the two faces from the front). Also when he communicates to Luffy about his plan Luffy seems to look back on the body, suggesting it actually is Law behind him.
Yet people need to have a panel of it explicitly shown? When we already have Luffy and Law switching places in this panel, meaning that Law would've had to switch back with the fodder. People on here sometimes really need to look closely before getting worked up on stuff.
-
By the way am I the only one that didn't get that much annoyed by Trebol treatment?
I mean it was kind of a PIS Trebol just rushed next to Luffy assuming he'll stay idle but there was nothing unusual with the kick. It's the decision Trebol made that is problem. He could have used a range attack or something. But considering executive-levels him being cast aside is consistent with Pica and Diamante for me.

More like, why the hell did he take so long to react?

Still better than Bleach.
C'mon bud. You can do better than that.
That is absolutely no way to compliment a series, lol. The amount of repression and delusion required to like Bleach at this point is super insane, and I am a guy who CONSTANTLY disregards major flaws of things in order to further my enjoyment of them. Up to a point. Bleach has blasted off beyond that point into a dark, desolate planet of notoriously terrible fiction. Some brave souls have ventured to the planet, to cling onto its desperate final years, and the air is filled with delusion.

Who's the Joker now, huh! Not sure why'd he want broken glasses though…

Haha, good point. Sanji, Nami, Brook, and Chopper have been MIA for….wow, how long has it been? Out-of-universe, that is.

At least a couple hours. And sadly 15 months in our time. We've seen them in some color spreads though wooo

About 15 months now, I think.
Do you realize the only real pervert we've had for the past year is Kin'emon? That just won't do!

Yikes, given this arc still has a ways to go and Oda's break schedule….:X
-
Zoro said he wants to try the birdcage. Guess he forgot, he got pushed in the 'relax and do nothing' group. 1 hour of One Piece time is likely more then Luffy needs to defeat DD before birdcage gets to finish the job.
-

Fingers crossed for the arc to finish before the end of summer

You mean, those that Oda actually allowed to be characters.
Which at this point, would be about half of them, I think.
And I'm sorry, why wouldn't I care how well the antagonist do their job as the antagonist?
-
So yes, Doffy, Law, Mansherry and Sugar all qualify.
I can understand for Doffly's clone, Law's everything, Sugar's frozen state(or amnesia-thing)… but what's the bs with the restoration fruit? Too convenient?
-

I know, or else this arc may just hit 100 chapters deep.
-
Who's the Joker now, huh! Not sure why'd he want broken glasses though…
Even broken glasses would send a strong message to the underworld of which Doffy was a part and would send a huge message to Kaidou as well.
Luffy has already picked a fight with Big Mom may as well add Kaidou to that list.
-
I can understand for Doffly's clone, Law's everything, Sugar's frozen state(or amnesia-thing)… but what's the bs with the restoration fruit? Too convenient?
That and it is too unspecified. It's a reset button in the series that has thankfully avoided this crap until know, and I hate reset buttons.
-

16 chars of simply, yes.
-

A healing ability was bound to appear somewhere though, so at least that is over with. And if it just ends up regenerating Law's arm, as it doesn't look like he is in a critical state, it won't be too much of a reset - at least he won't be revived, which is what looked like would happen.
-
You mean, those that Oda actually allowed to be characters.
Which at this point, would be about half of them, I think.

Because they are individual characters before they are antagonist ? And giving them some personality is better than having a personality-less walking-talking cliche like a certain character that you like ? You don't seem to treat antagonist as individual characters instead you expect them to be one-dimensional characters who basically play well-antagonist role but have nothing to their overall character . Antagonist is just a role nothing more . It's their character that matters the most …... at least to me .
-
What Chapter does Sakazuki end up on Whitebeard's Bisento?

And I consider characters by both how well they play their role and how well they are written.
I don't consider Akainu nor any of the Doflamingo Family to be particulary inspired characters, but one of those actually plays his role pretty fucking well.
And what sort personality does majority of the family has? Arrogance, Over-confidence, loyalty to Doffy, and generic cartoony villainy constituted well written characters for you?
There are a lot of characters among the family that had the potential to become great. Outside of Senior Pink, the manly man who dressed in diapers because it made his wife smile, and Diamante, if we are being really generous, they don't show much else. They are victims of this arc being really about Doflamingo and setup for other stuff.
-
Let's not forget that there's still someone else in the palace, Sabo is far far away and Trébol needs to be taken down ASAP!

What Chapter does Sakazuki end up on Whitebeard's Bisento?
Volume 58, Chapter 567, page 13. Know them by heart.
-

Haha alright. Thanks.
The acts are similar. Same as Luffy stopping Arlong's weapon. One of the more badass things we've seen from Luffy as of yet.
-
I enjoyed the chapter despite all the questionable events that transpired. Yes, Gamma Knife in fact didn't do what it should have done because Yes, Doflamingo's strings do more than your usual strings to the point of being hax. And yes, Law keeps on doing hard-to-believe-stuff. Does this make me less excited for the arc's climax in the form of an awesome fight between two very strong individuals? - No. Luffy hasn't gone serious in quite a while, and stopping a downward kick by just putting your foot in its way + that stare? This fight better last until both of them are completely worn out and we have witnessed the better part of their moves, if not some new moves. This should be a real deathmatch!
Oda will make things work for the remaining cast in some way, even though things have gotten chaotic with so many people around.
And who cares about Trebol? The guy practically has no personality anyways, besidens tending to come too close to people. Either Luffy will send him flying or someone else will.
-

While yes, they haven't all been treated with equal levels of dignity, they are still so much more fleshed out, diverse, interesting and humanized than any other previous antagonist group. That applies both to personality, power and relationships with each other and with their captain. That's despite there also being more of them than in any other previous group and in spite of the seven zillion characters taking up space in the arc. Although I do have my misgivings about how several of their fights were handled, the fact that they're still the highest quality antagonists we've ever seen by a long shot underlines just how good Oda did creating this bunch of misfits. This is the first One Piece arc where I can say without a shred of a doubt that the villains were by far the best and most memorable thing about it.
Did we read the same arc? Half of them barely get any screen time, and when they did, it's just them doing their gags. The only ones who got any kind of character outside of that were Baby 5, and Senor Pink.
-

One of my favorites.Well, excuse me for broadly generalizing, but I just can't stand the guy ;) He's got a pretty nice DF though, I will give you that.

That actually bugs me a little. Law had a very decent plan. Destroying Doffies organs is good and such, but he knew about his string-powers. So I'm playing Captain Hindsight here but he should have known that stitching the organs together is within Doflas capabilities.

Those crazy Straw Hats, they can have a party anywhere. Even on a gas-filled island with extreme hot and cold.

The way it looks, sabo and 'the unknown guy' in the palace are more likely to fight then face Trebol.
Half dead law wounded DD the most, when luffy did nothing on him so far, maybe he's still good enough to beat trebol.

Stitching your organs back together to the point of being able to walk, and probably fight, immidiately after them being severely damaged, seems a bit hard to predict.

Hehe, like I said, in hindsight. Some seastones and a flamethrower would have worked wonders on Doffy
