Gear 4 is awesome tho. And to think some people thought he didn't come up with it during his training lol

before that i thought that Luffy's gear four will involve crab pistol like moves(shooting out extremely hot shock wave). i like how Oda make Luffy fist cannon look kinda cool.

I think Gear 3rd is still Luffy's go to move when sheer destruction is needed.
I think Gear 2 is speed/maneuverability, Gear 3 is large scale power, and Gear 4 is concentrated force. The older two still clearly have uses at this point.

Indeed, a very nice summary there.

but he clearly used soru (or even better,a geppoued soru) in this chapter…so gear 2's primacy in speed is shattered

Anyone know what day that is??

The steam seems to indicate that Gear Second is also being used.

It looks like he uses it in bursts, which makes it inferior to G2 in that regard.

Which is why I also mentioned maneuverability.
Gear 4 so far seems like a one-on-one combat specialist form, whereas Gear 2 retains better range and control, making it useful in more circumstances. For instance, I don't think Luffy could have saved Kyros from Doffy's kick in Gear 4 without just attacking Doffy.
Seems like Gear 2 has a shorter activation time too, but that's subject to change.
Next chapter Gear 5th?

same here lol. I really liked it
I'd like to see a Gear Reverse or Gear…Emergency Break.
Holy. hell. Doflamingo got his ass handed to him wrapped in a bow on a silver platter. (Yes obvious post is obvious)
I think it's that they are indeed a gear upwards from eachother. Just with Gear 3rd the speeding of the blood flow has far less effect since he still needs to move those giant limbs and with Gear 4th he still needs to contract his muscles(?) before he can accelerate.
Casually posting this to milk it :)

interested as well
Kong punch. Let me repeat that… KONG PUNCH! How awesome is that. Awesome gear fourth AWESOME! Sorry luffy just amazed me with his techniques his upgrades in terms of speed and defense.
The fight is definitely not over though. You have to credit doffy for calmly analyzing luffys upgrades while tanking the damage. The next round will be intense.
I'm assuming that zoro will have 0,0% chance of stopping the birdcage or i will definitely jump on the Fuji/hate/ineffectiveness bandwagon. But!!!! Zoro trying is actually a bit bad for fuji. There is no way fuji has used all he got to stop the birdcage. Fuji dismissing his own effectiveness after dropping only one meteor is simply not enough.... Zoro succeeding will indeed look really bad both for fuji AND for luffy who is supposed to be the days saviour.
All and all luffys animal theme is cool makes sense given where he lived for 2 years but the weird coat tattoes are hmpf! But gorilla ftw!!
thank you oda…..i am in tears from your epicness. Gear fourth is everything I could never hope to image it being.

talking about something different from the g4..I'm now kinda disappointed..because if leo was already able to stitch back together law,why in the hell manshelly/moncheri didn't healed him?
with his power he doesn't even need to be where luffy and dofla are fighting, and can still help him.
before i had accepted the fact because stitching up an arm is not easy, since you have to carefully stitch together all the parts, from the skin,to the nerves etc..so it takes time, and if you heal him before the wound will heal and he will not be able to re-attach his arm again..but now that the arm is attached just put him back in shape and let him help
i get why he isn't going to,but story wise it doesn't make sense
Because Mansherry is not as OP as people believe her to be?
I am pretty sure she has already healed him but the time it takes to recover is based on the graveness of injury.

but the fact is,jola was counting on her reviving immediately the fodla family, which had taken a greta amount of damage anyway..and it was more than one person too.
if she wasn't able to put back in shape law now, then she wouldn't be able to revive the dofla family too

Its time for Moria's return,
Isn't that right Beka?
was there ever a kabuki color spread?

I don't think anyone of the family members had their arm sawed off or came even close to that kind of damage. Not to mention Law himself mentioning using his life force.
The damage law has taken goes on a whole different level than anyone else in Dressrosa.
He has taken so much damage that people have been whining complaining about it every time a chapter came out.
I would wait to see how her power works but I am quite positive her healing abilities require some time to fully recover things and the time is based on the damage.
Luffy has become Pandaman. What a great homage.

Maybe Sherry got dehydrated.
Or else I got nothing.
Had to take a peek since I'm going to have to work overtime today (but it's paid so it's cool). FINALLY some normal fighting in this damn arc. Can't wait to see Dofla's counter.
As for Luffy's appearance. Well, I think I was half expecting it to be more goofy and less cool. So I'm not really disappointed. His limbs do need to be big for his pneumatic attacks to work.
G5 will probably look a little cooler, though. :ninja:
Do you think this will have some meaning as the old color spread which has forshadowed Ace's death?
Its time for Moria's return,
Isn't that right Beka?
beka?
straw hats with zombies = moria siding with the straw hats?
Can we stop and talk about the colorspread. A picnic with zombies??
Nami, Usopp, Chopper, Brook….all scared out of their minds (aww, Nami was clinging to Luffy). Meanwhile, Sanji is falling for a female zombie, and Zoro's sharing booze with another. Was Robin feeding one of them?
Easily one of the best of the series.
Just realized what was missing from this chapter. Reaction shots. Ok, not everyone would be able to realize that Dofla was flying off the palace unwillingly, but Law enelfacing would have been funny.
Btw, it was a little nostalgic opening Mangareader and seeing Big 3 together again.
I think Gear 2 is speed/maneuverability, Gear 3 is large scale power, and Gear 4 is concentrated force. The older two still clearly have uses at this point.
The point is that I can't really see gear 4 as an alternative to the previous gears. To me it feels much more like an upgrade because for it to be just an alternative, we would have to see quick changes between gear 2,3 and 4 (we already saw combinations of gear 2 and 3 post-timeskip). I don't feel like we're going to see Luffy in gear 2 in one pannel, doing large scale destruction in gear 3 in the other, and finishing it off with a punch of concentrated force in the last. I mean, imagine Luffy going gear 4 etc, dealing some major damage and in the last moment (when the opponent is immobilized) changing back to gear 3 to deal the finishing blow (assuming gear 3 does more damage?). Visually, I think it seems unlikely he's going to change from being his bulky self in gear 4 to being his small self in gear 3. Still, I can see the point of gear 3 as large scale destruction. As for gear 2, he couldn't deal any damage to Doflamingo with it so it makes me wonder what enemies he will face where gear 2 will be superior to gear 4 in combat.

Why would Law Enel face? He seems to have faith Luffy can take down Doffy. But yes other reaction shots would be good. Surprised we didn't see Barto but I guess he's still having a fangasm from Zoro still.

Enemies who spawn underlings and logia users are two kinds of enemies I don't see this gear working against. It gives decent speed, but low maneuverability.
Poor Barty would foam at the mouth in pure euphoria seeing Luffy all powered up. XD
I hope after Goldenweek we get back to Jinbe.

can I say Im disappointed
Yeah I was also very disappointed with the design, hopefully he fine tunes and is able to shrink back to his normal size and still have the same power. Similar to how Goku was able to hold Super Saiyan in his everday life, even though it was quickly scratched. Moving past the look, it seems while he was fighting on the island with Rayleigh he learned some new moves and named them after the animals he encountered. Interesting, so I wonder if these moves are only available once he goes gear four? Does Mingo have eyes or what because his "glasses" just aren't breaking?
@sabinis:
I would love to see buff Vergo vs Buff Luffy.
It wouldn't even be worth the time to draw, if Luffy is doing this to Mingo, Gear 2 would be more than enough for Vergo. Also how is Luffy able to fly with this change, it just isn't making any sense.
@RobZilla:
Yeah…I really don't like the way Gear Fourth looks.
The idea behind the offensive and defensive upgrades is a good one, but it looks pretty awful.
Couldn't agree more, just seems to silly even in a manga with a guy that has rubber abilities. I wonder how long he can stay in gear 4, because Mingo is taking some big hits.
Luffy had me like…
Could you guys explain something?
If Luffy came up with G4 in this timeskip training, how is this a shout-out to Bellamy?
Birdcage can cut meteors, but somehow pushes the significant amount of rubble towards the people, thus once again proving Doffy's strings are made from plot convenience.
I don't remember seeing anything like that. The buildings are falling. Maybe a little rubble is dragged along but that' pretty much it.
How is that plot convenience?
Zoro is going to block the birdcage. If he succedes, I will print a full scale picture of him just so I can shoot flaming arrows at it.
Zoro is not alone. He will do it along with two Samurais from Wano.
Healing powers are suddenly not instantenous, as has been established. More plot convenience.
Ah, one random mook was healed of a few bruises. "Established".
More hyping for the world changing. And it bloody well can't arrive fast enough. Though considering it has been supposedly changing since Whitebeard War, which happened pre-timeskip, I shall remain pessimistic until it actually happens.
It was specifically mentioned by Law how the top tier people have done nothing but wait for a new era since Whitebeard's death.
I think this time it will be different but that's just me being optimistic.
Gear Forth… I like the incorporation of Kabuki elements into design. At the same time however, the art on it is... off. Especially the face; if you look through the chapter, it sometimes loses any resemblemce to Luffy at all. Same with weird proportions.
I guess people are split on the art. I like the overall goofy design. No real need for new powers to maintain the same face especially if he is made of rubber.
And I'm sorry, I found the fact that it is CoA that allows him to do it just annoying.
This is bothering me too. But I guess I will wait till it is explained properly.
Also, he stole sky walk from Sanji. Which is… well, they both witnessed Gempo, so I guess it's okay. Though it still feels wrong that the thing supposedly unique to Sanji got copied.
I am not sure is that was geppo. he didn't name it. It might be some kind of spring action along with lighter than air body. Fits pretty well with the gear.
Oda trolling the hell out of everyone, making Gear 4 looking weird and shit.
So Monkey just turned into Gorilla

did oda get the idea for kong punch from this? kong makes rubber toys for dogs.
16 char of GREAT! lol :D

Could you guys explain something?
If Luffy came up with G4 in this timeskip training, how is this a shout-out to Bellamy?
G2 wasn't a result from looking at CP9 either, but his speed in that gear was. Similarly him retracting his limbs could be a result from copying Bellamy.
but he clearly used soru (or even better,a geppoued soru) in this chapter…so gear 2's primacy in speed is shattered
Not necessarily. Luffy does seem to have retained the bulk of his movement speed, but I'd like to think that G4 attacks are slower and need to be delivered at a closer range - G4 seems to be about a different sort of elasticity, less dynamic but with more resilience compared to Luffy's standard rubber body
Which still gives G2 an edge in some situations.
Btw, it was a little nostalgic opening Mangareader and seeing Big 3 together again.
I just finished reading the new chapters for the big 3, I got to say this was an awesome week for them!!!
Was Luffy this fast in Gear 2? I mean look at the panel where he disappears out of Doffy's sight and appears on the side of him only to catch him clueless to his kick.
