definitely something to look forward to I can't wait
That looked beautiful, and I love the concept around it. Can't wait.

Zelda + TES ? Two of my favorite series ever?
Sign me up for a WiiU, when the game has been released.

Minus the lobster :(
It looks fantastic, a world the size or scope of skyrim in zelda speaks volumes. And am i the only one who thinks link looks like ashitaka from princess mononoke?

Nope. Many people have made that comparison as well
Is it just me or does that arrow seem oddly… tech-y?
It's because there's no sea in this one (as far as we know), Foolio!
Hey I'm just pointing out the difference. And it doesn't change the fact that the lobster was awesome.
Love the crisp, vibrant look of this game, absolutely beautiful. Guess I definitely have to get a Wii U, now. Zelda always sells the console for me.

No arguments here, man.
my dream for a zelda game has always been to be able to travel through a dense forest with no linear path, and this might be the one to deliver that
I can't wait to see more on this - most open-world Zelda so far, beautiful art style, and the return of Epona would've been enough to satisfy me already. Link's new design is pretty cool (first Zelda with no green tunic, possibly? At least not as the main outfit?), and the high-tech monster and arrow are definitely interesting - I'm guessing there's going to be some more futuristic elements to this one, which I'm totally cool with.
Interesting observation: Link doesn't seem to have a sword here. I'm guessing one of three things is going on with that:
1. This will be the first Zelda where Link doesn't have a sword: the bow is instead the main weapon.
2. Link will get a sword, but not at first: the footage is of earlier in the game, where Link has a bow but no sword yet (could also explain the lack of the green tunic?)
or
3. Link has a high-tech sword this time around (much like the arrow he used here), and Nintendo just doesn't want to show it yet.
Regardless, I'm pumped.
I'm curious exactly what they mean by open world. Because so far all I really heard is big world. If you can do dungeons in any order that's kind of cool. I enjoyed the hell out of A Link Between Worlds where that was the case. But at the same time it does detract some of the mystery of the world with places you can't reach without different items (I hope they don't do an item rental type system this time). And it's frustrating to have everything be more or less the same length/difficulty (read: easy) because of the ability to tackle in any order. It'd be cool if they still had a difficulty curve, like the first game, so that you CAN go to later areas early if you're prepared to get owned.
Even tho I played Link's Awakening just recently, but I'm kind of hoping for a 3D Zelda game with dungeons and a nicely condensed but large overworld like it. I felt that game really did a good job at balancing puzzles, combat and exploration.
But yes. This game is looking pretty, even tho it's tech demo more than anything.

You can do them in any order. He mentioned at some point that htere are various ways to get to places. So sounds like you coudl get to a dungeon by using say hookshot, or instead using a bomb, ect. And since different ways of gettingto places, it shoudl sufface to say that you could go to them in different orders.
Well the problem is dungeon puzzles also should utilize the items for various puzzles etc, to maximize their effectiveness. So being able to COMPLETE dungeons in any order (maybe not get to them?) kind of undermines that, unless they completely change how items work. But also the difficulty curve thing. Or hell, maybe there won't even BE dungeons, but that would make me super sad.

Shit. What if that was Zelda?
Mind. Blown.

They did mention in one of the directs that they were questioning the idea of Zelda being a game you played alone. What if coop with Link and Zelda is in the game?
I'd rather play as Zelda than a female Link tbh.
This probably varies to each person, but Link already has established traits that make him, him (to me at least.) He already has an identity and is his own character. Making female would take a while to get used to for some reason. But then again, making Spiderman black or asian or latino wouldn't be a problem to me, so I should probably get over it if they make Link a female. But it would still feel weird to me for some reason, and I hate that.
I personally can't think of a single trait that would make Link/Toon Link specifically male, aside from traits unique to each game for story-telling purposes.
Added to the fact that you usually name the character, which means the idea is you're putting yourself in the shoes of this character. If girl players have had to deal with playing as a male character that represents them, I don't see why male players must cause a ruckus about having to use a female character to represent them.
I for one would find female Link really refreshing and it could put a really neat spin on the same old hero tale.
ummm since when was it even confirmed that the protagonist in this game is female anyway? Just want to make sure I'm on the right page here.

It hasn't, but people all over the internet have complained about it anyway. Like complaints about how Link looks too "girly."
At least it's not to the same level as the Cat-Eye Link/Celda complaints back when Wind Waker was revealed.
Dude, Wii U really does feel like the Gamecube 2.0
Nothing's confirmed, Link's model in this game just looks more effeminate (or bishie, if you prefer) than usual and people are freaking out about it. And now even more speculation is sparking because that's supposedly not even Link in the trailer according to some Nintendo devs.
If it does turn out to be a chick, I hope it's just some new character or whatever. I'd honestly hate for Link to get the gender-swap treatment. It's just not necessary and I'd appreciate it so much more if it was a brand new female character with her own personality rather than Link with tits.
Of course now that there's this anticipation and rumor for a new female character/fem link, hundreds will be dissapointed when it turns out to be something completely different, like link's brother/cousin/evil clone/whatever.
U mad bro.
so shook about girlink!
It's the Legend of Zelda, a story that can go through infinite variations with the core story being a hero in green appears and saves the world.
I don't see how gender makes any difference to that, it's only cosmetic. The game most likely won't have the writing depth(and neither should it) to have gender be even a point there.
On principle everyone can feel the way they want but also on principle gender of any of these characters should have 0 influence on your enjoyment of the game. Link's character doesn't hinge upon being male and neither does Zelda's character hinge upon being female.
And then there's also this side of me that rather supports the option of choice on this matter for children. Wasn't there this dad that reprogrammed a Zelda game to have Link be female? For people that young that still feel strongly about the need to identify with what they're seeing on screen I support that. I don't want that to be a barrier to entry for anyone young. As an adult though I think you're weird if you feel so strongly about characters that loosely defined.
Me personally won't care either way about the result since it neither adds or substracts anything for me. It's just that I'm rather sad thinking about the reason of why people would feel it would substract anything. And don't get me wrong I'm not implying everyone that feels that way has some misogyny issues it may just be you don't like change, but even that is somewhat sad as an adult.
I can feel more at ease with the reason that this would add anything. "Oh this is new" is a sentiment that doesn't feel like it has any detriment to it.
While most things of the game wouldn't be affected by gender, one of the staples of link is that he builds up a harem as the game goes on. Think on how would you feel if Danuria, Groose, Osfala, Ralph are atracted to you… hmm that could be hilarious.
If this was a Female Link game, would you rather to have Zelda in it, or without her, or with a male counterpart? What about Gannon or a new enemy?
I think that we are gearing up to dissapointment though, I don't think that Anouma has read about the father who changed Link into a girl for his daughter or other similar news, to inspre him into making this change.
It's just not necessary and I'd appreciate it so much more if it was a brand new female character with her own personality rather than Link with tits.
This just in: women are actually really just guys with tits.
I, for one, welcome this new protagonist with undetermined genitalia.
You just said it, for the story gender changes nothing. So why bother changing Link's original gender if it doesn't do anything to change the core of what Legend of Zelda has been about for years? So while it's definitely a possibilty when you consider how things work in the LoZ timeline, it's a possibility that changes virtually nothing storywise.
Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf will still be the triforce trifecta. The characters will still be who they've always been for years. Hyrule will more than likely be the main setting. And the hero of legend will save the day in the end. Gender has no impact on any of this, so why do it? To pander to the fans of gender-swapped characters? Um sure, if they wanna do that go ahead, that's one hell of a niche appeal though.
Now, for the player gender can matter a whole hell of a lot. Female fans of LoZ can now have a female protaganist to identify and connect with instead of being forced to play as a dude like most games. But rather than taking Link, an already exisiting character that's been set as a male for more than a decade, and chopping off his dick and balls, why not just make a new female character to play as, completely seperate from Link in looks and his established character.
Or better yet, why not just have Zelda kick ass for once? She already exists in the universe and her character is already set as a strong female leader so it wouldn't be weird in the slightest to see her wrecking shit left and right. Plus, it'd make a strong positive impact on the story AND the experience of the gamer while a femlink would only be impactful for any gamer who wishes to play as a girl.
In the end, even though I don't really want it I suppose fem link wouldn't bug me too much. The massive and constant backlash that's likely to come from it, I think that's what turns me off from the idea more than anything else.
I prefer Link just stay male but be significantly androgynous enough that once can easily imagine him as female if one so chose.
I wonder if the wooden port that was destroyed in the video had tits.
Honestly, is it that hard to imagine why it could be cool to have the formula rewritten to feature a strong female lead? You could even have a lot of fun subverting LoZ tropes. Also it's not like every Zelda game is about the Triforce trifecta.

I actually look forward to the backlash, break the walls down.

It's not hard for me at all. I'd love for a Zelda game to actually feature Zelda or maybe Impa and her journey, her struggles, rather than Link. I've wanted that for years in fact. A gender-swapped Link, though? I can't say I've wanted that for years. I'm just not into that niche, sorry.
Like I said before though, if they did do it, I'd probably just get used to it after a while. I don't have much faith other people will however.
It's kind of stupid to call it a gender swap. All the Links are different, and they're only even consistently called "Link" as a reference point since you name your player. In Wind Waker you are just a descendant, so what stops a descendant from being female? That's the exact, EXACT same thing as it being a "new" character. Now if they're going to make the character design super similar whatever.
But an Impa backstory game? Sure why not. Or some Zelda-focused game. But I feel like those would tend to (hopefully) play a lot differently than the standard of a swordsman.
For the record I don't think the new game will have female Link.
You know what i just realized, the mysterious femme link isn't even carrying a sword. So yeah, this could even be a different story based in the Zelda universe that doesn't revolve around Link (or the femme Link character is a red herring second player shrug).
If I were a crazy person, I'd rather this be a game about Link and Malon's love child that just rides around in an open world setting doing menial farm tasks, delivering milk, and shooting raging chickens and a Luigi-lookalike.
Legend of Zelda: Grumpy Moon
If I had to guess, it's just beginning-of-the-game Link before getting his gear. But oh god please anything but a co-op Zelda game. Keep at least one of your franchises single-player.
calling it now - new character is the descendant of Link and Zelda from Skyward Sword, and the game is set the usual "100 years after" that game. but these are 100 zelda years, so now the world is fairly colonized despite there being like maybe a dozen female characters tops in SS. anyway, there's still a lot of World to discover, so you're going around on horseback to do that.
alternate theory - it's set far in the future from the other zelda games, so much so that a Highly Advanced Civilization arose and fell, but there's still all their old tech laying around and stuff, Laputa or Atlantis style. so you're fighting forgotten roving robots or whatever, and using old tech that hardly anyone even remembers how to use.
OR, you play as a trans-gendered hero who sets out on a quest to end cis-privilege, while simultaneously dealing with xer own feelings about hyulrean-privilege. have the bokoblins internalized the racism of the System? is the 1% truly responsible for all of Hyrule's woes, or can we blame the blase middle-class, as well? also, how can there even be a 1% when you can just fucking find money by cutting bushes? all these questions and more will be answered, in a stirring narrative that proves Link is "left" in more ways than just his handedness.

Exactly this. To me it's like the whole avatar thing(the cartoon not the Cameron movie).
Also agree on the likelihood of female Link happening. It just doesn't seem like a very Nintendo thing to do.

I was thinking the whole time about what this type of glossy cell shading reminds me off. Finally got it Gravity Rush!
There is another title that I think also has very similar cell shading can't think of the name it's a capcom game.
I personally would not mind at all if this Link was somehow female, whatevs. I'm more curious on how "futuristic" this world will be.
Again, Aonuma has gone on record teasing that nobody ever explicitly said that was Link
So people have been pointing out that the bracers (arm gear) that "possibly Link" is wearing in the trailer are of Gerudo design. Compare the screenshots in the opening post to this:
[hide][/hide]
Speculation runs rampant.
Interesting that this may not be Link afterall - I'm guessing he (or she? still betting on he, personally) has some sort of relation to Link, however. Still, the implications are interesting if that's not really Link…
Also, someone pointed out to me that Link (or whoever this is), does, in fact, have a sword; you can see it very briefly before he jumps off the horse, behind the futuristic arrow he pulls out. So there goes my theories regarding that...
