One Piece Chapter 742 - I'll always be close to you

Not really a fan of the ending,i konw it was to be expected from onepiece,but i would have preferred to see some ingenuous trick frok usopp instead of just dumb luck and a dofla executive scared by a face.Oda seems to have lost the taste for a good fight,since nowadays they are all off-screen….that or he does not have the creativity anymore to create lots of different moves for every new fruit like in the past.

the flasback was ok,but since i notoriously have an heart made of stone,the touching part was wasted on me.

The woman in the birth of becca panel was probably just the obstetrician who helped scarlet to give birth to becca,or do you think that king riku,kyros or a child viola were able to assist her?

As to how people now know that becca is the grandaughter of king riku,i think dofla just spilled the beans of that,just to add some suffering to becca,s private hell

Anyway,now that sugar is down,the real battle can begin,so i'm not complaining

It seems that oda has been off-panelling only the losses. Smoker vs. Doflamingo. Sunny crew vs. Jora. Law vs. Fuji and Doflamingo. Usopp vs. Trebol. Franky vs. Dd family. Makes sense, i think, since it'd be a downer to watch the heroes fail. Necessary to the plot, but not what makes the fights fun. Usopp will shine again at some point, franky's been a beast the past couple arcs. We're still gonna get a bunch of good one on ones which will inevitably be victories, so i'm not upset about the manner of Usopp's victory.

Also, it's interesting to note that, while the individual flashbacks were quite short, all put togheter (Rebecca's + King Riku's + Kyros's) are of a quite decent size, a good 4 total chapters. I guess considering Oda hinted at a Dofla backstory (Celestial Dragons and shit) + Law's backstory (Cora-san and shit), he decided to not spend so much time with every individual flashback, or people will end up fed up with them. Too bad he forgot about Monet's purpose in the Palace during the process. . .

I'd still would've prefered if this entire chapter was focused on Kyros, and the next chapter was a more developed Colosseum + Franky + Usopp mix of scenarios, instead of a all in 3 pages; though, I agree Franky's struggle was so doomed from the start that there wasn't much point in showing it.

Well, Dofla knows she is in the royal family, and knows she is alive… it is not wholly unreasonable to think that at some point he finally found her and made her identity known to everyone to make them hate her in the colosseum

And Luffy won a whole armada of allies without even moving a finger, finally the fun can start.

He doesn't need any balls, when this end is so much better/funnier than anything predicted by the readers. It's nice to see that Oda keeps being Oda from the beginning to the end of the series. It's a comedy series after all.

I could be wrong here, but hear me out. I've heard that when you're trying to make (very) precise shapes from (very) high performance materials, a mold can only get you part way. Sometimes some sculpting is necessary to get a final product.

Keys, for instance, are typically made by cutting a blank copy which was molded (though this is more because you want to cut lots of different keys that can be cheaply replaced). I'll grant you that locks are probably made mostly from cast metals.

The answer is, in real life how do people cut Diamond and shape it how they want?

Mixed thoughts about this chapter.

Flashback was fine, though I get alot of Cobra from Riku.

The ending acutally did make me laugh a bit, but I think we as readers (and those who analyze this chapter more then the general audience in Japan) are putting expectations on how we view the story compared to the way Oda and the editors are writing it. If anything, this chapter and the ones before it show very much that Oda is trying to stick to the status-quo when it comes to Straw Hat dynamics, at least for now. Perhaps we read to much into what Ussop has gone through, and Oda himself is just not at that stage to take him there yet, or again, he is trying to keep the status quo.

That said, the critisms i think are valid, but maybe we need to look at the bigger picture. Sugar's face at least was hilarous.

Not a bad flashback, Kyros/ Mr Soldier has finally become a character we feel for. A nice effect from Kyros not being able to feel Scarlett die, good emotional scene.

I'm not sure about the Usopp ending. It's bad from Oda not to show the fight. Usopp had trained for two years, and for him to win by luck really holds little to the meaning of becoming strong and protecting the crew. I always liked Usopp fights so I'm disappointed that we didn't see any action. But then again he was against the odds and Oda does have to find ways to speed up the manga.

Who really knows anything yet? (not counting Oda). Maybe when we look back on the arc it'll make more sense, that's usually how it works. Oda could show a flashback of the whole fight (or highlights at least) like how he handled Zoro vs Ryuuma. Or Usopp may leave Dressrosa feeling like a failure, take the embarrassment to heart and really live up to his dream when crew reach Elbaf (God I hope we see Elbaf). After all, for years we expected Elbaf to be where Usopp gains major character development.

Thinking of Elbaf reminds me of Zou, Yonkou's Blackbeard, unknown Shichibukai and Admiral, poneglyphs, Roger flashbacks, revolutionarys, great war… and everything else Oda has to handle. We might be grateful in the end that Oda rushed some parts of the story to have the more important moments well paced. Here's me hoping that in future arcs Oda tries to completely return to his former ways of storytelling and makes things flow better, with more focus on character development and fights. It'll be sad if One Piece loses grip of it's original themes, going all the way back to East Blue where I always got the sense that there'd be an incredible final few arcs to the OP story. Not doubting too much though because I've still enjoyed Punk Hazard and Dressrosa, but I have noticed the change in pace and quality since the time-skip, and I hope it's only to get to the deep shit quicker.

While you may be right, I'm pretty sure that the sharp material needs to be of comparable hardness in order to work. Otherwise it would be like those sharp cheddar commercials where they show a triangle of cheese squishing against a balloon, unable to pop it.

Not even Oda can please everyone. As for me, I've totally loved this arc!! It is so much better than the Fishman Island and the Punk Hazard ones!! I never saw this ending to the SOP operation coming, it completely surprised me and I only love it more because of that. Still making you laugh and feel sad after almost 800 chapters, still making it unpredictable is such an amazing task!!

Oh, so that is why he's called thunder soldier. I loved the flasback, Kyros is now one of my favorites characters in One piece. The Usopp stuff felt a little anticlimatic at first but after reading it again it was a nice way to give the win to Usopp vs motherfucking Trebol and queen of Opness Sugar

Because Viola was visibly still a child when Rebecca was born and looked plausibly 16 in 728 like her sister did in this chapter? Jesus Christ it's a joke.

This may surprise you but 16 and even younger is the age of consent in a good many places, I didn't say anything "twisted"

I know he had no chance there, but for some reason I feel like he should always easily win his fights.

Anyway, this chapter was awesome.

I was pleased with everything this chapter. I did have some hope that Usopp would defeat one of Flamingo's monster quartet and Sugar but that really is a bit much considering one is a logia. Seeing the razor leaf last chapter and everyone watching the building rumble from the outside was more than enough for me. The job was done hilariously and once the Toys are back I don't doubt Franky and Usopp will get another chance to win a fight against these guys. For both of them the odds were just stacked too high against them.

Franky had 4 named opponents surrounding him and Usopp and 2 which are the corner stones of this entire arc. The off panel battles don't bother much especially when so many healthy opponents are left to be defeated. I loved is chapter!

All in all this has turned out to be my favourite arc of one piece. I honestly can not fault it so far

it has teased stuff like green bull, law's past, reverie, yonkou(s) , the revolutionaries and much, much more

I can't wait to see how Oda tops this

Ussop sure cheesed that victory! The last panel caught me by surprise, but I'm glad that Ussop's 'fight/ordeal' is finally over so that the plan is finally set in motion. Great faces too.

Yes. Actually, it's more for Scarlet's reputation, which would have been ruined if she married a murderer. Apparently, that would have been seen as a pretty big deal.
