Ah I see, that was a misunderstanding then. I said that Smoker knew way too much about the fruit, not 100%. The move that finished him, however, was within his own explanation of Law's powers (MES being a "scalpel" attack).
So yeah, just like Primo11 said, he didn't follow his own advice there. That's why the "outhaxed" card can't be played, really.
When we think back to Enies Lobby, Kalifa stated that the key to fighting a Devil Fruit user is to know the ability:
Luffy, Zoro, Nami & Usopp had to figure out a dozen df abilities in order to overcome their enemies. Smoker already knew what was necessary to win - and lost.
It's a bitter pill, especially since I really wanted him to be a major threat to Luffy. That's why I really hope that the fight against Vergo continues the way it does at the moment: badass comments, badass haki imbued attacks - and hopefully some sort of special attack unique to his devil fruit.
You can know the info of his fruits power, but not all the particulars
I doubt he knows every move law is capable of, or how he performs such moves, he probably just has a rough estimate of how the ability works from the devil fruit book encyclopedia
and to be fairly honest Nami's the only one who's had a tough time figuring out there opponents ability, it isn't like JJBA where they try to hide there ability and what it can do, like when zoro fought mr. 1, he stopped him from attacking nami, then figured out it was a sword, and then daz reveals his ability, they almost always arrogantly tell what they can do in OP
the few exceptions are ones that usually can change the entire flow of battle
examples
Croc being able to dehydrate people, thankfully Luffy had water or he'd be screwed the first time
Kalfia's ability, the true strength of her ability is to wash away everything, which she said to nami out loud, if she kept her mouth shut nami may never have put the association of bubbles = no power until it was too late
Gecko Moria's power to switch between him and his shadow allowed him to knock out Robin
Ceaser this arc, his ability to suck up air
It's not really fair to hold Luffy to a lower slandered then smoker is it? He lost because even though he understood some of the ability he didn't understand a fundamental power of his DF, now when they've re-fought it seems luffy almost won if not interrupted by monet, similarly if Smoker had a rematch with Law, he'd be much more cautious about the only move that seemed to affect him
