Next Strawhat Crewmate (Vol. 6)

if i remember right, i read somewhere in one of SBS where oda replied to a inquiring strawhats' final crew number….."as many as luffy's heart still desires" or something....can anyone help me finding this?

just tryin to share this since the declaration of luffy in number of his crew changes...so we can assume there is a possibility he would get more than 10 crewmembers.

before he sets out: "10 people should do it"
speaking to coby before recruiting zoro: "at least 10 people"
oda stated after luffy gets 8 crewmembers: "as many as luffy's heart desires"

and one piece is just halfway....

and i understand those who disagree with me, its just that, i gave out my points which i think are pretty acceptable (ok, dont give a big weight to the nationality, color theme or animal theme, its just additional points im trying to make) and all the reply i would get for their disagreement is because they assume that things will stay that way when the manga gave out hints as i stated and oda's needs to expand the series unlike he planned when it started.

what im trying to say is, what if franky, robin, and others that would be recruited are just changes he made when one piece was extended from 5 years to 15+ years?
what if jinbe (and that other 2 guys i mentioned which also had been introduced early like jinbe or kinemon) is really a part of the original 10 man crew that oda planned but they needed to be recruited in the final parts of the story and so oda needed to insert some new recruits like robin and franky? (i think franky is the "smoking" small man)

and how sure are we that smoker is luffy's garp? how sure are we that luffy needed to have the same type of persons that roger encountered? how sure are we that luffy's story would need to be exactly like roger???

how sure are we that smoker will last until last stages of the story, when there are bigger rivals for luffy that we can easily assume he mets in the climax of one piece? (akainu, coby, law, kidd, blackbeard, shanks, gorousei)

im just sayin this because it gets pretty tiring to point out hints and reason about someone who i think got enough criteria to join (im not saying he definitely will, but they fit the criteria) but all the reason i always hear is because "he is luffy's garp as garp is to roger"

does it really have to be that way? they just hate the idea? or are they set in their thinking about a certain character?

remember, its one piece and there is no extreme god or evil here. anyone can change in this manga.

Smoker's desire to bring down Vergo makes it extremely clear he is bent on eliminating the bullshit elements of the marines. He's a marine through and through, and if anyone so far in the story can change things from the inside, it's him and Tashigi, especially given Aokiji leaving and Coby probably not being his level yet.

Think deeper. Why do you really think they belong in the Straw Hats? Forget theories and numbers and signs and crap … think of the characters and the story. Why would they belong in the Straw Hat crew?? Why do YOU think you'd want them in the crew?

can he decide it makes sense to add another of course, is it likely given his plan for the end of the series is already well established in his mind. prolly not

Personally, i can not comprehend why some people are so eager to let that many people join the SHs, they barely get enough screentime as it is, with 11 people in total it is gonna be even more difficult to give every Strawhat their respective time so 13 or 15 people is really too much.

well, assuming the new world is the last stage of their travel, wouldnt it be logical to complete their crew the earlier the better?…but yeah, i get you guys and your points are also good, im just theorizing so not point in arguing too much about it....lets just see how it turns out...i just wont exclude any possibilities in one piece though, if im wrong at the end of the series then that's too bad but if my prediction comes true then i hope i can at least get some credit.

and the screentime is possible, it will just turn out to be longer arcs and more enemies so every strawhat can get the share of the pie (which i think its better, i like long arcs). my "monster 5" will match-up just fine against gorousei (but that's another matter)

In the Eyeshield 21 if I remember right the Devils core characters were like 10 people just like the SHs, and im not even going to talk about Bleach were even Kubo doesn't know who the main characters are supossed to be.
And Zatch Bell had like 8 characters in its core group but had other characters appear in some arcs then leave(or get killed) it wasn't really a huge cast on the main team.
Negima sorta made it work but even then some characters got more focus then others(and others didn't have almost none at all).

So Oda may be a great author but there are some things that are really difficult to pull off even for him because of the medium itself.

Criteria? You mean like a dream that would require traveling the world with Luffy? Or a tragic flash back that dictates his purpous in life? Smoker is a rival to Luffy as much as Black Beard and even Ace. His role in the story has been clear from the get go and it's not as a Straw Hat.

Smoker can't pursue justice if he joins the Straw Hats. Tashigi might be able to get her swords if she does so, but her character is intrinsically linked with Smoker's and her development has been hinting (heavily, as of the current stuff) towards her having a role in reforming the Marines. She can't really do that if she's a pirate. Their dreams are tied with the Marines and making the World Government less corrupt.

I don't see any reason for Smoker and Tashigi to join. They're supposed to be on the side of justice (marines) not freedom (pirates). From the beginning we've been shown that they're not really inline with the WG, but staying in the marines anyway, because that's how they side with justice. Joining the strawhats will just deny their (or at least Smoker's) own aspirations.

IMO, most of the reasoning for them joining are conjured by the wish for them to joining. Well, many of the reasoning in this thread are quite like that.

the dream, tragic pasts and other stuffs for a strawhat criteria are revealed either before or after a crewmember join...so who knows? i could be wrong or i could right and smoker's justice is almost similar to the strawhats' sense of freedom and being an outcast...reason why smoker was nicknamed stray dog of the marines....but whatever. ok. smoker is garp in you guys eyes and i wont argue with that...thank you for taking time to read and respond to my theory...i appreciate it :)

Smoker's justice is about chasing down pirates and shaking up the Marines to be far less corrupt and overbearing. He can't really do that unless he's in the Marines. I can see him and Tashigi as allies (and not just grudging ones like in this arc), but nothing more than that. Marine justice =/= a dream, as we saw with Tashigi. We know Smoker's justice, which already is heavily tied with the Marines, we don't know his dream (unless catching Luffy is his dream, but then that's a bit lame).

Smoker and even Tashigi's behavior is there to show us that not all Marines are corrupt assholes just because they serve the World Government. They, Coby and Helmeppo, Hina, Jango, and Fullbody, etc. are the humanizing faces that make us invested in how the World Government ends up. I'm sure Oda could make it work, but there'd have to be a hell of a saga beforehand. And it'd be odd to get both of them; at the most, I feel like Smoker could become a bounty hunter or even a Revolutionary, but never a pirate.

i can be reasonable, just sometimes i wanted to point out my views but it doesnt mean i fully believed it that it would happen 100%. :)

well, just like pointing out that i dont think smoker joins the revolutionaries, he hates dragon in my presumption…being a bounty hunter would be much acceptable.

i just dont think smoker could stay in marines any longer after this doflamingo arc, his disgust over the system keeps escalating everytime he appears and i remember him mentioning not able to do what he wants just because of "rankings"

well, if doflamingo really works for someone powerful in WG, smoker would be in trouble if doflamingo gets beaten.

if you wanted to know when and how long im reading the series then i started back in 2004, so ive been reading it for 8 years more or less.

if you wanted to know when did i have this idea of smoker joining….its when i saw luffy telling him "he dont hate him" and smoker being "almost happy that the strawhats got away" as hina said.

also, i dont think smoker hates the strawhats, well yeah, he hates pirates but its just fishy to me that he definitely hate pirates but helps luffy.

so in my view, he subconciously see luffy as a good guy and interested in him (more than he wants to kill him) and he just wont admit it because of his dedication and pride. but once all that dedication shatters (corruption in WG) then there is a slight chance my theory might come true.

yes, smoker would be a bounty hunter, that would be a possiblity, but what if luffy beats him already? and the only pirate that interest him is luffy....so i think the next best thing is capturing luffy when he becomes the pirate king.

any other fight between them besides that after he loses to luffy would be a waste imo. if he loses to luffy then his identity as luffy's eternal chaser takes a dive.

well if its an entirely new nakama, ive also thought about what i wanted. either,

1. a viking human that was raised in elbaf (not a giant but a human), no devils fruit but as strong as sanji.

• his dream is to travel past the twin capes and see for himself dorry and broggy which were legends in elbaf (of course he would be interested in travelling with them because of ussop.)
• his weapon is a big-ass axe that can also be a boomerang.
• his tragic past is his village was burned by pirates and killed his parents, he was saved by the crewmembers of dorry and broggy pirates and was sheltered in elbaf.
• he got a reputation of being a hotheaded bastard at elbaf and challenges even giants.
• his personality as a strawhat is he loves to fight, he is impulsive, so he gets hit by nami a lot,…when he sees an island, he immediately fires a cannon at them and always the second to luffy when it comes to carelessness.

1. a shandian warrior (tribal, indian american themed guy) who got the ability of rock-rock logia fruit.

• i cant think of anything, but i just want him to have the rock-rock fruit and he always uses his reject dial…and he shatters to pieces everytime. LOL

1. a female ninja that would be recruited in wano-kuni, extremely skilled but is always panicking to the point of clumsy. old fashioned and always in constant argument with zoro
2. a funny human detective, skilled but funny

I support the idea of another female crewmember. I want to see a wild and cheerfull adventureous girl, not someone who's serious and rational like Nami and Robin is almost all the time. She could be a fashion designer, and the tailor of the crew, or maybe the blacksmith, since Franky doesn't seem to forge weapons. The blacksmith idea seems pretty reasonable actually, since i can't come up with a logical and non-cliche'd reason for why a tailor would be able to fight on par with the SH crew. She would be interested in cameras and photography, and she would be childish and tease people and get in quarrels all the time. For fighting, i would like to see an axe or a rifle/pistols. There hasn't been a strong axe-wielder in the story except Sentoumaru, and i would like to see someone using creative techniques with an ordinary gun. Or perhaps a crossbow/bow. Or a df.

Now that Jinbe is set to join the crew you can make that 3 'straightman' crew members with Nami and Robin. (Despite Jinbe making goofy faces, he's a pretty serious character.) A wacky female would be very cool. A silly idea I had was maybe there'd be a crew member who would be the only female void of sanji's approaches. Sort of an ironic twist with her pining for him while he just treats her normally.

I don't like the idea of someone "legendary" joining very much. The whole story, Luffy and his crew have gaining fame and infamy through their actions. Beating Arlong, beating Crocodile, beating Moria. Taking down CP9 and destroying Enies Lobby. Breaking into the world's biggest, most secure prison, coming out alive and freeing a bunch of criminals! Participating in an global war and taking down an army of rebellious Fishmen.

The Straw Hats have gone from being a no-name group of misfits to one of biggest names in the piracy age. And their influence and actions are just going to grow and grow as Oda continues the manga.

Putting somebody "legendary", somebody who's seen it all, would only serve to diminish their relative importance in my eyes. It'd be like "wow the Straw Hats have the legendary X on their team" not "wow it's the Straw Hats!".

And while Jinbei is well-known across the world, the Straw Hats have eclipsed his infamy as a whole. Luffy by himself, too.

You know, I never thought about it like that. Jinbe is quite powerful and him joining too soon would pretty much overshadow the main 3 in strength. We know how strong Jinbe is (able to throw around most opponents, save for Mihawk, with ease.) but we don't really know the true strength of the Straw-hats yet. I have a feeling we'll see that when they take on Big Mom and her crew.

Well, since the foundation for everyone joining the crew so far is that they need Luffy's help dealing with a problem they can't solve themselves (I'm expecting Jinbe's to be stopping Big Mam, though breaking out of Impel down and stopping the NFP also kinda fit), we'd have to come up with a reason for said Legendary person to need the SH's help. My best guess is that it's going to be someone loosely aligned with the WG, who gets royally screwed over by Akaniu's style of absolute justice, and needs the SH to help him/her take down a Marine Admiral. But really, Oda could bring in number 10 from pretty much anywhere at this point. The last 5 SH (counting Jinbe) have been a former Shichibukai, a living skeleton, an underworld boss, a fugitive archeologist, and an anthropomorphic reindeer doctor. I don't think Oda's lacking when it comes to interesting character origins.

But yeah, Monet is clearly a villain. But she is a good villain and that makes me happy, hope she will put up a fight or will fly away into next arc. More harpy would be awesome.
