A grappler is Barto's natural enemy. I think Luffy would actually do quite well (think of the move that beat Don Krieg or even Spartan), especially considering that as long as he doesn't put Haki into his own moves, he couldn't even hurt himself via reflected attacks.

-The rumors of his brutality were precisely that- rumors. One of the incidents even concerned a "broadcast," meaning that no one witnessed it (perfect for someone who just wants people to think that he's terrible)
-His bounty is low enough to suggest that he doesn't actually go around murdering innocents
-His reputation as a horrible guy is exagerrated to the point that on its own, it's highly suspicious
-The fact that his piss-everybody-off nature is actually necessary for his power to work effectively means that that could very well be the only reason he goes around being so obnoxious. It could just be a means to that very specific, combat-oriented end, because it makes everyone want to punch him in the face.

Did I miss something? Several people commented on Luffy 'not liking Barto'. I don't remember anything saying that, only Luffy calling Barto "that weird guy" and cheering for Bellamy. Luffy just had a short exchange of words with Bellamy before he went out to the ring where Bellamy was actually civil to him.
It doesn't mean Luffy doesn't like Barto, just that he doesn't know the guy.
Of course he would cheer for Bellamy, the one he does know and was a total change of character from before.

I think this chapter alone is decent proof that Barto's power is meant to reflect direct, striking attacks. The juxtaposition with Bellamy's spring grip- which is the only point when Bellamy had the upper hand- seemed very intentional on Oda's part. He's not prone to wasting panels or dialogue.
I wouldn't be surprised if Luffy actually remembers that moment later on, and emulates Bellamy by wrapping his own arm around Barto. That sort of "learn from your fallen buddy's last ditch effort" is classic shonen stuff.

I agree with Barto personnality, i think is a good guy. And for no reason, i'd love to be Luffy "that person".
We see in the previous chapter with Don Chinjao and Cavendish, said he will have ennemies from all over the new world because he became famous, but this logic can be applied in the opposite way...

Meh I don't see why people though Kyros would have won, I was expecting him to lose wtv block he was appearing(since I was expecting him to be on a block), hes an old man and we also don't know if there was such a good prize that made people as strong as the ones that came this time to participate in the colosseum before but like he said in the manga, hes an old man now and seems to be getting weaker according to that.
On anoter note like others said I was suprised that Luffy was cheering for Bellamy, it actually put a smile on my face for some reason.

This. It appears that if you come within reach of Bartolomeo with hostility his barrier will impede you. Maybe this is why Bartolomeo mocks people. It’s all a ploy to get people to strike him. This makes Luffy an ideal opponent since he’s not prone to reacting if someone tries to make fun of him. But if you insult his nakama then it’s a different story.

Wouldn't say it was inappropriate. Had a look at the panel again, he really didn't look that desperate. And we really can't say what he'd have done if not for the King's punch.
But I did say earlier in the thread that there's a chance for him to be more or less a glass cannon (although, that's pretty misleading in this case). I just don't think this is the case (yet).
It seems my prediction may turnout to be true, Bart came here to win the fruit so he can give it to Luffy, Luffy was his idol when he was a kid so he became a pirate just like his idol Luffy.. Loll

Except that Luffy is, oh, 19 years old (right?) and that only gives Bart 2 years to become a fan. That would mean that Barty were, what, just turned 17 (since that seems to be the age for heading out to sea). Never mind that Luffy has been off the radar for the last two years and all new pirates would think he were dead and gone since, oh, he and the crew haven't been seen since then.

And there's certainly precedent for it: Luffy explicitly said that he was inspired by CP9's soru when creating his fast-movement move while in Gear 2nd (tapping the ground extremely fast; itself a throwback to Sojiro's move in Kenshin, which makes sense given that Oda was Watsuki's assistant back then). He personally thanked Blueno for the chance to meet them and see that. Being a genius fighter doesn't prevent you from learning from others. Just the opposite.
Next week may perhaps be a flashback chapter, with the one legged toy soldier narrating the past of Dressrosa, and depending on who appears in the aforementioned flashback we could have a great deal of ‘the next nakama’ contenders in this arc. Let the muppetry begin!
