Lol I'm Dutch. I couldn't care less about this topic when it comes to One Piece. It's probably the most liberal country on earth so maybe that's why people couldn't accept my view on the situation on page 10 (also I said it a little bluntly)
I think people are really looking too hard to search for something that isn't there, and react all sensitive when a girl doesn't get her fights in a shounen manga where the target audience is male teens. It's a gag where Franky kissed, in a fight between two hard boiled men.
Stay out of this woman, and watch us fight because you don't understand it is the male equivalent of Nami and Robin staring at Franky and other guys when they freak out over robots and say pshh that's stupid.
I think people in Europe are less sensitive about stuff like this in general. Not only on this matter but also about gay issues, racial stuff. It's all been said and done. In America they don't want to touch it with a 10 feet (which is about 3 meters, time to switch to metric btw) pole, but it's better to just bluntly talk about it and get it over with. Everytime I hear someone say 'the N-word' I have to cringe. It's so correct to say n-word, while everybody knows what you mean, you only put extra emphasis on it, and instead of closing the gap between different races or genders or whatever, you only widen it.
That's why with stuff like this, people really should shrug it off. If emancipation means wanting the same treatment as a man, than don't start falling over a kiss in a comic, and look at everything through a magnifying glass.
I find this to be an interesting point. I live in Belgium(Flanders) so the mentality here is kinda similar to the Dutch one. I gotta say I agree with almost everything you said. I find your points to be reasonable, yet they cause so much uproar here. It's kinda fascinating
Problems that we are confronted with in our daily lives (like sexism/ racism) seem to cause heavy reactions. Sexism is seen as something bad (and rightfully so!) but the line between 'okay-ish' and 'going too far' gets drawn really differently. What for one person is too far and actual sexism, might be harmless to the next. Where one lays his line is (like with a lot of things) determined by certain factors like education, cultural background, social standing…
What I'm trying to say is that there is no right or wrong when interpreting this particular scene. Oda most likely drew it without any bad intentions. Some of us get offended by it, some don't. The question whether is was sexist or not, when looking from a global, neutral standpoint is impossible to answer for a single person since we're all influenced by something. That's why discussions like in thread exist. I just feel like everyone here wants to prove their own opinion right. But there is no 'wrong' or 'right' when discussing nuances of global, culture-based problems. There's only a collection of viewpoints.
Almost everyone here is practically on the same side (=sexism is bad). When discussing greater problems we all might agree completely. But for such a trivial matter like a couple of panels from a children manga, it is possible to produce kinda extreme viewpoints.
tl;dr Discuss with each other instead of against each other
My short opinion on this: I don't care about it. The kissing is a bit awkward, but it is in the context of making a gag. OP has some problems with woman. I'd like to see more really strong ones, more versatility in the design, no crying princesses anymore etc. But these problems don't go as far as making a this series not enjoyable.
One piece has its problems concerning woman, but the Franky scene wasn't part of it
NO
zoro promise to luffy he will not lose.
You mean when he faced Mihawk in EB?
There were still moments afterwards where Zoro got his ass kicked (Kuma, Kizaru, influenced by Perona's ghosts(!)) I don't see a problem if it would happen again after TS.
Someone to kick Zoro's ass post time-skip. Without him holding back in any way.
I came to this tread to post this. Seems I was too slow.
He is just too arrogant in my taste.
Wow. this is really great and I imagine it quite useful to use as a basis when discussing sword styles/battles.
If this was a forum with rep, i'd rep you. Since it isn't: you have my respect for making such a great thread.
I nominate Duval/Handsome
(still hoping for a Duval/cavendish match-up)
