I'm betting its just a Dressrosa thing. DD and Mihawk acted like they knew each other when they met at the Shichibukai meeting so they might both be Dressrosa natives, and Blueno was an orphan adopted by the WG so he could have been from there too.

Might as well say Capone Bege is also from Dressrosa due to his stereotypical Italian gangster design. Hey, Robin uses a plethora of random Spanish words in her attacks. You may be right, but we don't know for sure though. He use to be a Fleet Admiral though, and before that, we can assume he was an Admiral.

He's probably quite strong in the scheme of things.

Also modern Greece/Cyprus are basically extremely similar to Italy and Iberia so I don't really know why that's shocking to you.

The Coliseum is Roman, and Centurions are Roman,
but names like "Spartan", "Hera", and "Kyros" are most definitely Greek.

That's sort of what I meant–the Greek stuff looks more like the Greek stuff the Romans stole than specifically greek things.

Not how Rome inherited its culture from Greece. That's a common knowledge, no one is ignorant of it.

@Aohige i remember from history lessons that there were Greek city-states in Italy but in order not to give any false info i just copy pasted it :P (not that wiki is accurate but its close enough). As far as history goes there were city states throwout the entire Mediterranean even in Spain.

My point is, there's nothing in this thread to indicate "Since it seems most of you dont know why there are so many similarities between greece-italy". The discussion is how not why. We all know the why.

It's like when people are discussing a blue fishman blending in with the blue ocean you suddenly spring to the thread "HEY GUYS! The sea is blue because it's reflecting the blue sky! You guys didn't know that did you!" out of nowhere. lol

Now if you were to, say… use your familiarity with Greek culture seeing how you're a native, to explain the difference in culture of ancient Greece and Rome, THAT would be fitting. Which I'm sure you can contribute!

EDIT: And Macedonian if it ever comes up in OP. All those greco-influenced civs are so murky lol

I agree with most people who say its unlikely for "Lucy" to end up battling Burgess at this time. For one thing, captains dont typically engage in battle with fleet commanders, even if Burgess is the 1st fleet commander (highly prestigious and presumably quite powerful only behind BB). Although it definitely is an exciting prospect... it would take us too far afield from the main point of this arc probably. Main things Im looking forward to this Coliseum stuff solving is just: Kyros/Statue = ???, and perhaps just a bit more about what Donflamingo's crew are like since apparently each crew member is the "prize" you get for advancing out of your block. (Prize meaning to fight them next)

You see at it wrong then. when greece had its peek there was no italy-rome so it had a culture after rome rose to power you had the culture taken from Greece and then added some changes (greece was under roman empire) after the faill of rome comes the distinction between Italy-Greece which was mostly influenced because of Church differences. the difference is because of medieval times. Italy is filled with monuments of the dark times where in Greece you wont find that

Yes it is true Roman Empire came after the decline of ancient Greece, but they definitely had those territories within their Empire and used many of their civilization's aspects just modified. (Roman Gods/Goddesses fairly similar to Greek ones just named differently for example). Many historians contrast ancient Greek city states as more "pure" or "art/science" oriented with Rome being more "political/military" oriented. And they say later Europe took both those aspects in forming their modern civilization

We're not talking about the difference in Italy and Greece though.

What I'm saying is, we all know Rome was greatly influenced by Greece and that the adapted the Greek culture.
You're somehow under the impression that we don't know this, but this is a common knowledge.

I'm starting to repeat myself here, you're simply not on the same page of discussion we're having..

Again, it's the resulting "hows" we're discussing, not the "whys".
Is this a language issue we're having here? I can't really state this in a more simple way.

To be on the same page of discussion, you may want to explain which part of Dressrosa arc is influenced by greek, and which part is roman, and which part is just basic greco-roman stereotype instead.

I think Block D will be shown mostly off-screen. Especially if Cavendish does get disqualified, as I "predicted".
After Block C Oda may well want to show Luffy and what is told to him after he won the Block and people congratulating him etc etc, then some crew shots, then back to Luffy and the winner of the D block. Something like that is what I imagined.

Not like I wouldn't want D block to be shown, this is just how I expect Oda will handle it. Then again, it's Oda.

Gladiators' games weren't even a roman custom, originally, but were imported from other italian populations, annexed by Rome in an early age…
Anyway, plenty of greeks "worked" as gladiators, after Rome conquered Greece, just like happened with other countries: it wasn't strange to find greek names, together with germanic names, spanish names, numidian names and so on. Coliseum and gladiators' fight are (stereo)typical of Rome and its imperial age, though there were older than the Empire: there is nothing greek here, apart from some gladiators who fought in it. Greeks had different types of games, more on the athletical side.

Being italian maybe i can give you my point of view about this greco-roman debate.
i don't think oda is trying to underline specific greek or roman features in this dressrosa arc, this is more like the mediterranean stage with ancient times references, which are obviously typical of mediterranean peoples. Sure, colosseum and gladiator are roman just like kyros and spartan are greek, but i don't see anything implying a will by oda to "distinguish" the two, they're just for the sake of the plot so no need to overthink about it :D we'll probably keep on seeing both roman and greek terms.
About the difficulty to tell greek and roman features apart, we all know that romans were highly influenced by greek culture since the second part of the republican era, and it's true that some things are just "classic traits", but probably because i'm italian and i did classical studies i can distinguish roman from greek peculiarities, and i understand that general people from around the world can't. But i guess there is no way for you to do that, you have to know the cultures to be able to do that :D
