There are other cases of the same real-life pirate name being basis of multiple characters in One Piece.
The most obvious one is Whitebeard and Blackbeard, both referencing Edward "Blackbeard" Teach. Oh, and Thatch, making it three characters.

It doesn't seem like an actual tournament arc,though.More of a tourney within a greater arc.

Looks like Caribou's story is finally getting interesting with Kaido's crew getting into the mix. It's even possible that his cover story becomes relevant as fast as Jango's did. I find it funny that he's afraid of the guy, since Drake with a similar bounty was all about fighting him as soon as he got to the New World. But more importantly, these revolutionaries are just normal workers? I'm betting they have a sad story that will help us hate Kaido later.
So many new character designs! Oda must pump out tons of them and then decide to use up the rejects in chapters like this (yeah, I know that's probably wrong since most of these guys are inspired by real life wrestlers). But no doubt there are some that will appear again hidden throughout the crowd. Like the first three, the Chinjao family, for example, could be important if they ever go to that country (which Aohige says is probably the OP version of China, so it's highly possible). These guys rock anyway. I like how they make their appearance by standing up for Lucy despite having every reason to want him gone. The thank you gag killed me, but what gets me most is that these guys have to be the least muscular fighters ever! In a world of 6 packs, poor Xai's abs look like mine.
The Funk brothers and Elizaberro are kinda cool, but Dr. Robotnik Dagama is way cooler than any of them. The guy narrates like half the chapter too! The way he takes all these other fodder guys seriously and plans to top the fodder list through his cunning, and the fact that he looks like freaking Dr. Robotnik, I love this guy. I hope the country of Prodense gets a year long arc so that we can marvel at his flying robots and sympathize with his accursed hedgehog infestation. I'm sort of sad that all these guys will last about as long in this tournament as Lip Service Doughty did against the pacifista, or in many cases might not even be gifted with such a panel in the first place.
Hey look, some more cool designs and holy crap it's Bellamy! Ahaha, that poor bastard got sent by Doflamingo to be a punching bag. That's what the good customers pay to see, after all. My only question is whether Lucy one shots him before or after he figures out who Lucy really is. So much for him not being stupid enough to go to the New World. I never really thought he was dead, but I never really expected him to pop up again in the New World either. I hope that massive scar on his face is from Luffy's fist (it's about the right spot). It's probably not, but since we'll never find out, I can believe whatever I want to!
Oh man, I got so psyched when Luffy got to the armor room, and the set he picked did not disappoint! Luffy's right, it looks so freaking cool, so it's a shame that it only lasted one page really. Still worth it, though.
And then there's Cavendish. I dismissed him as fodder the moment he said "I got to where I am without exerting too much effort." Yeah, he stands no chance, and his bounty isn't all that much higher than Caribou's despite having 3 years in the New World to raise it, and it was over 200 mil to start with. Slacker. That doesn't mean he won't be important though. Strength isn't necessary for that. His gags are great, too. Luffy ignoring him the first time was good, but the second time was priceless. And I about died laughing when I saw him stick his entire flower in his mouth and eat it. He also got to be a part of the 2nd great Lucy gag. Oda's turning this guy into comedy gold. I get the feeling he's in C block with Lucy, so that he can give us more great comedy.
And then there's Rebecca (they just keep on coming). She definitely gives off the vibe of a typical important ally character. She gets along with Luffy and hates all the same people. If she manages to win her block, then her importance in the arc will pretty much be sealed, and it will even verify her strength without a fruit power to lean on. After that it'd be anyone's guess. But in all honesty, she's probably the best candidate for the mera fruit that we've gotten to this point. Her reasoning for wanting it isn't strong enough yet, though (no way do I believe it would be the difference in her winning or losing that fight). Still, she's got a leg up on any of the other characters introduced in this arc so far, and I concluded last week that someone on the crew getting it seems unlikely. But there's still a long ways to go, and she's at least partially being used as a red herring anyway, to distract us from the importance of the real introduction…
The statue of Kyros! A mysterious bronze statue, that Luffy likes and wants, that nobody has ever considered removing. And out of everything that was introduced in this chapter, he's the one who gets the chapter title? Yeah, color me suspicious. I'm not going to be surprised in the slightest if it's on the Sunny when they leave the island. We've been waiting for a bronze statue like this to appear since... Skypeia? It's yet another thing that seems very important to this arc that I have literally no clue where the plot is going with. Right up there with the fairies, but with more long term appeal.
Lastly for characters, it's the Jesus! (I really want to see the happy store now). It seems so obvious now, since these types of competitions are basically his favorite thing ever. I've been waiting to see Blackbeard's crew get a chance to show why we should care about them, especially the originals. None of them have any notable achievements to date. I'm really hoping that Luffy has to fight him near the end and has to struggle to win. I wonder if he has a fruit power yet. If not, that would give him even more of an excuse to lose to Luffy. I guess he's also a candidate to get the mera fruit, but that idea just seems so cruel. Still, it can't be discounted. That sort of cruelty is what I expect we'll be getting from the Blackbeard pirates.
So as far as the tournament layout, it seems like the 4 block winners will face off against the 4 lesser Donquixote family members and make an 8 man tournament out of it (which would probably set up Burgess and Luffy to meet in the finals). And then the winner would have to fight Diamante. Something along those lines, anyway. The Jesus and Lucy are both in, and Rebecca is the one notable character from block D we know of. She's not guaranteed to win it, but she seems likely enough. We haven't been informed of anyone in block B, so my guess for that would have to be Balto Romeo. In a chapter packed to the brim with new characters, he's the only one who got mentioned without getting shown. That means he's probably important. Definitely looking forward to next week. I figure the focus will shift to other characters after the prelim matches are done, so hopefully we'll get the rest of them in 705.

I think that rookie from a year ago barto romeo is someone we've actually seen before. How he is mentioned but not shown makes me believe that it is setup so that we will be surprised when we see him. Why else would there be one participant who is kept in dark where about 10 others are shown.
I dont see how people could even think that rebecca is going to win the d block battle.That spartan guy was said to be her bully, and anyone who cant beat that guy by farting alone doesnt stand any chance in this tournament. She will play some role in the arc, but it wont be advencing far in the colisseum.

Dagama was easily the best design of the chapter, and I rather like Oda's bishounen caricature (and the fact that Luffy's blase attitude towards him dismantles him). I just can't even place what I like about the design but it just seems so classic and cartoonishly evil. I also like that he's the military strategist, so his dialogue about obtaining the Mera Mera no Mi makes extra sense.
Seriously that design is just incredible in its simplicity.

How did any of the logias acquire their fruits? The three admirals could've gotten theirs from the WG, but what about the others? The answer: they found them. The fruits respawned and they found them first. Or people didn't know what fruit it was, like with the Awa Awa fruit and the Ushi Ushi: Giraffe fruit.

I'm enjoying this as much as it goes, but personally hoping we get to see whar Robin's doing soon. Hasn't been enough Robin. I guess she's going to be front and centre again when the Rebels become important but she really deserves more page-time after the last couple of arcs.

This is something I wonder about as well. There were only a few hours between Doflamingo handing the fruit to Diamante and the beginning of the tournament. Someone mentioned a few weeks ago that the contestants simply came from the "islands next door", but now we know that several countries are involved.
Even if we ignore Jesus Burgess (who might just be there for the lolz), why would Doflamingo want that several notorious pirates / bounty hunters participate? To increase the chance that Luffy finds out about the tournament through word of mouth? Did he plan it since the Straw Hat's reappeared at Saobody and was just lucky that it currently benefits him in finding Law (and kicking his ass)?

Interesting idea. I like Lucy being good enough at haki to imbue a weapon, but wonder if I would like it if that would ever be his style? Even if temporarily using it here?
Even to use it in a tournament could open it up for Luffy's fighting style to incorporate a lot more of random haki imbued surroundings to act like weapons instead of just his body.

Sure, Lucy grabbed a broadsword and Crusader-type shield for teh styles,

In the Fishman Island arc, his CoA couldn't stand up to Hodi's cutting attack,
so the thing could just be for defense against slashes. But I think if he's going
to fight incognito, he'll try to avoid gomu gomu attacks in the first round
(we should start a betting pool on when he'll get unmasked 
) and bashing
foes with a haki buckler is the next step up from his Wax Champion gauntlets…
I also think it's interesting the fodders all buzzed about him flipping Spartan
and even Cavendish asked how, but no one is commenting on his CoO dodge
of Spartan's punch. Haki ability and knowledge seem to be less common in the
New World than we thought.

Last thought- about Burgess leading Blackbeard's 1st division:
I'm fairly sure that's not a strength thing, I think it's more like
Risk (or other similar board games where you control territory.)
That is to say, some islands/pirate crews are in BB's sphere of influence,
like in that concentric circle diagram, and are semi-autonomous.
But here and there BB has to assign loyal crewmembers to be the
regional boss/protector/military asset, and I think Burgess was just the
first OG to be spun off, hence 1st division, while BB kept the heavy
hitter Level 6ers with him for domination deeper in the New World
where enemies are fiercer. Not to say Burgess is weak; Doc Q is
probably weaker, but a smart Yonkou doesn't leave his doctor behind.
Could also explain why Burgess was close enough to Dressrosa to
get to the tournament after the MeraMera announcement.

Yes, but do you really think his story will end there (that was pre or post timeskip?) or is he more likely to drop back in the story just at the right time to screw up everyone else's plans? Must say, one of the joys of OP is that either is actually likely. Maybe Oda has plans for him to steal the mero mero at the last minute and become… DISCO INFERNO!

Both him and Zoro took notice of Jesus calling himself "Champion", and were ready to go at him. Luffy, being someone more prone to remember people's nicknames than names, instead of saying "It's Jesus Burges!", he says "It's that champion guy!".
Bellamy is probably Doflamingo's spotter, he's probably been assigned to find Luffy then buy time till Don arrives but I see him wanting to challenge Luffy; he knows what Luffy looks like and he probably sees this as a chance for revenge and to get back into Doflamingos good graces. Well thats what the Donquixote recommendation seemed to be.

Actually we don't know that at all. That's not a fact. At all. I don't know what the character is all about, I'm simply speculating that either Luffy or the other rookie will beat him simply because Cavendish is whining that the newer generations are becoming more famous than him and wants to beat those pirates for that ridiculous reason. I'm not saying it's right, but for me it is looking likely.
The same here, maybe in the next chapter Bartolomeo will have an special introduction. I see Cavendish like a character that bring humor to the arc more like he will be a great opponent or arriving in to the final fixture of the tournament. Is the new Buggy of the show and we will keep see him. Maybe for a long time in the New World or only in Dressrosa arc (like Duval in Shabondy)

The word used for those revolutionary people is simply "workers" or "manual laborers." That's it. Proletariat has a whole mess of implications not contained in the word 労働者. Panda's choice of "workman" was good. Stream's "farmhands" is an asspull out of nowhere, especially considering that they were working in a factory.

Is there a seperate word with those implications in Japanese? Because I can't help but feel that's the angle Oda is going for. Especially since this is a manga for kids, so using the term itself might get lost on the kids since it's both foreign and kind of complicated

I know what you mean, and I'm not faulting the worker translation at all, but there definitely seems to be implications that this is the angle Oda's going for. Obviously it's not a literal translation, and it might be wrong, but translating in general comes with those sort of risks from time to time. Ultimately, I'm just more surprised nobody went for that angle though, rather than thinking that it's necessarily better than the worker translation. And honestly, since I doubt we'll really see these guys outside the mini arc, I'm not sure there's anything wrong with confusing Oda's intent a bit, since I doubt he's going to show any outright proof one way or the other
