I'm a little confused now. Cloud wasn't the ballot character? Or was he?
With this level of development? No way.

"We were just kidding!"
-everyone who putted Cloud on the ballot.
Cloud has appeared in several games on Nintendo systems. Not the star but he has been there. Final Fantasy used to have a huge presence on Nintendo's consoles and even a few spin offs in the Gamecube and Wii Eras. A Final Fantasy character is totally deserving. And since almost every game stars a new protagonist any way, no other lead is as respected or revered as Cloud. He is the best choice beyond something like a Chocobo.
I played FF7 for about an hour once and that was it. I'm excited for his fans and eagerly await the day Ridley is playable. Maybe not this game, maybe not the next, but some day…
Cloud is Mr. RPG just like Ryu is Mr. Fighting game. His inclusion makes sense and is honestly an amazing surprise. In more somber news, Nintendo confirmed that December will be the last Smash Bros 4 DLC. We know 3 are in development (cloud is one of them) so any guess on who the other two are? Could literally be anyone now.

If you would have actually read the comments there you would see that is not the case at all. This was not a Smash Direct and we still got DLC stuff.

I'd take that with a grain of salt. Sakurai said about a month after Smash released last year that there would be no DLC, yet here we are 11 months later with a myriad of new content. I think it's about time they start slowing down a little bit, but as long as there is a demand for DLC and older content continues to sell well I can't see them pulling the plug so soon.
Snake was at least unique and interesting and not swordguy#33353
At least Snake had the Gamecube remake as a excuse.
Man I wish everyone was on snakes side back when i was pushing for his return, guess it took cloud to bring about that turn haha.
Either way im pretty happy with this, FF7 is one of my favorite games so his inclusion only adds to the amount of big name characters we already have. Nothing is out of the question after this, so i can still hope for snake's return if sakurai intends on pleasing as many people as possible, being a big nintendo centric name no longer is something that can be thrown towards third parties.
I…...still don't know how to react to Cloud. I'm not really a FF fan and I was banking on a Nintendo character, but damn it I was completely surprised. No leaks to spoil it.
To be fair, didn't Cloud show up in Theaterhythmn? So technically Cloud DID show up in a nintendo game…unless he also showed up in a handheld Kingdom hearts game for the DS or something shrug
Now I'm just going to wait and see if Goku shows up as well.
Obviously, it'll be Luffy with his popularity in Japan.
I'm down for Luffy and Luchador Pikachu to be the final 2 characters
James Bond, Goku, Shrek, and Shaquille O'Neil to be announced in the December Smash Bros Direct
I'm just going to say that the trailer was really well done. Especially Cloud vs. Sephiroth Ike.
Now will Cloud have Pretty Dress Cloud to complement Classic Cloud and Deadbeat Dad Cloud?

In a bizarrre cost-cutting measure, Nintendo has explained that while Shaq will not be voiced by the real Shaquille O'Neil, Shaquille O'Neil will voice Goku. Shrek will be voiced by MasakoX.
No one bothered reaching Sean Schemmel for an opinion.
Nintendo and their secret ninja squad has done again. I never played Final Fantasy 7 when I was a kid in the 90s. But this will interest me in buying the game. (Already had Smash. But I need to download a copy of the PS1 classic on my PS3.)
Over/Under on how long it takes Cloud's amiibo to sell out- 2.5 seconds
If by some miracle Konami would offer up Snake again, there would be more Playstation All-Stars in Smash than there were in Playstation All-Stars.
"Huh! Cloud in Smash? Neat. Not my what I wanted, but it'll be fun to play him and have Final Fantasy stuff on Smash Bros. It must have been hard for Nintendo to get him on here, especially when so many people wanted him to begin with. I wonder if the Smash thread on AP is having a massive meltdown because it isn't the character they wanted or because it's another sword fighter."
"Yep."
Most people here actually seem pretty cool with it.
I was kidding. Either way, I'm kind of in the same boat of people saying "It should have been a FFI-FFVI character rep", but meh. I like Cloud.
If Steve Burton is still going to do the English voice of Cloud, he is going to have a lot of work between the Remake, Dissidia 3, and Smash.
Nintendo called in the flesh debt Square owed them for propping their ass up for the first six FFs. Square shot back by only letting them use Cloud, as a final dig about the cart/disc thing.
Sakurai tearfully burns his 200+ page design document for Golbez.

Honestly, I think he does it over the phone by this point. Lord knows it's always sounded like that.

Off topic. There's going to be another Dissidia?
I agree with the people that as a simple Final Fantasy representative, he works out even if he's well known as a mascot for Playstation.
! Obviously, it should have been a crystal chronicles representative.
Cloud did appear on a Nintendo system, in the best Final Fantasy-related anything of the past 8 or so years, Theatrhythm Curtain Call.
Though if Nintendo really wanted to be cheeky, they've should've given Cloud his Totally-Not-Vincent outfit from Kingdom Hearts 1/Chain of Memories.
Everyone knows Cloud is just the backdoor invitation to getting Mallow and Geno in the game.

lol It's true. He and Vaan always sounded like that.

Yes. It's being released for Arcades and the PS4. It will have 3v3 cooperative combat, and the only characters confirmed so far are 13 returning heroes of FFI-FFXIII (WoL, Firion, Onion Knight, Cecil, Bartz, Terra, Cloud, Squall, Zidane, Tidus, Shantotto, Vaan, and Lightning). We've also been confirmed Y'Shatola from XIV and Ramza from Tactics as new characters.

Whether the FF fanbase likes it or not, he really is the face of the franchise. He's the most recognizable character. I'm just glad they went the extra mile with the Midgar stage and included summons. That'll be fun.
I think that biggest thing I'm anticipating (which I probably shouldn't) are the trophies that could come from this.
they're hitting all the japan classics whether they make sense in this game or not. Now let's just brace ourselves for goku and hatsune miku, there's no logic to this shit anymore.

Taking "phoning it in" to it's most literal extreme.
iconic character from an iconic series which has a respectable, if shaky, history with Nintendo gets into smash brothers
"SO ILLOGICAL I GUESS DORAEMON AND GACKT ARE GETTING IN NEXT"
Honestly Cloud has better reasons to be here than Snake did.

Ehhhh not really. I mean technically at least Snake did show up on the NES (and kinda sorta got his start from there) which could be more than said for Cloud.

Technically, the canon games were on MSX if I remember right.
MG for the NES was an awful port of an existing game. And it's incredibly weird when you remember that Snake in Brawl was based off his appearance in MGS2….which was never on a Nintendo platform.
Could been a black mage that changes jobs, something a lot more rpgisgh and ffish

There is a logic, the one you just mentioned. Digging up old characters from old games is a safer, faster and more profitable way to sell something rather than coming up with something truly iconic in these days. Smash in this case is just perfect since it feeds on the old by making it seem new. In fact it's worrying that FF hasn't got someone as iconic as Cloud ever since he came out. But yeah, this kind of business is what sells the most now, by feeding people with what they hold dear from the past and giving the same thing again, with either: fanservice of characters, unnecessary sequels or portings and remakes and such. Sometimes there is still some effort put into it, but for the most part we're bound to get Cloud again in Smash or Final Fantasy Explorers and Whatever Fantasy in the future, and just like him it happened with Ryu and will with others in other games.

Yes, and if you want to split hairs to that degree, technically Cloud did as well because Theatrerythmn and Kingdom Hearts.
Plus he was like, in a movie and stuff.
Final Fantasy definitely deserves a spot, and Cloud is the face of FF. That's all there is to it.
(Now we just need Bomberman…)

Most of the FF7 cast is pretty iconic. Sephiroth certainly is, and I'd argue for Tifa, Aeris and Berret as instantly recognizable as well. It was THE game int he franchise that exploded it into mainstream attention and made RPGs a viable thing stateside. The place in history that game holds is what makes him iconic, not Cloud himself so much. If 8 had come first it would be Squall instead, and if it had been 9, it would be Zidane. WHichever character was the first big "next gen graphics" character at the time would have made it as well. As is, Tidus and Yuna are probably better known than Squall and Zidane, and they totally made Lightning a thing, she was just in really shitty games.
It's kind of like complainign that Pokemon hasn't gotten anything as big as Pikachu since Pokemn first started. It's had plenty of fan favorites (like the things that make it into Smash…) but there can only be one main franchise icon that hits at a key time of recognition.
Just wait for the reaction when Sora gets added down the line.
I'm expecting a few more Mii costumes (Tifa / Brawler, Barret / Gunner and maybe Sephiroth / Swordsman).
Just need Isaac and Bayonetta for this game to be perfect.

His sneaking suit from MGS2…with Big Boss's face from Snake Eater.
Also Shadow Moses very bluntly being based off of how it is in MGS4. And how most of his trophies were things that you couldn't throw under the "Twin Snakes" umbrella (That Naked Snake trophy is still completely confusing for anyone who didn't play Snake Eater.) Plus his moves that aren't "punch-punch-kick" are all Big Boss's CQC.
I think Cloud's Omnislash loses something if he moves to the side while doing it. You're wailing on someone with a sharpened metal door, man, you don't need to dempsey roll out of the way.
@Cyan:

Never noticed he had Boss's face but I guess him also having Snake's mullet from SOL might've had something to do with that.
I wonder if Team FourStars gonna make something something about in the future.

Snake and Ryu pretty much stand on similar ground, in the sense that they're characters getting in because of sheer popularity and impact of the character, EVEN WHEN these characters are making their current day mark in other systems. Street Fighter V, Final Fantasy VII remake, these are both very intentionally skipping out on Nintendo, and yet here we are. Same happened with Snake as Metal Gear Solid 4 was the one promoted without even coming out on a Nintendo console.
And that's what people don't get. To some of us Smash is a celebration of everything that is being a fan of Nintendo, and when the floodgate of third party characters opened there was a significant worry that such a sentiment would be diluted. Mega man was awesome, pac-man made sense, and since Gamecube Sonic has been a staple of Nintendo consoles. Now we're just entering the realm of them treating it like it's just another crossover fighter and the fighter selection has no meaning whatsoever to Nintendo. Ryu was ok, sure, since there's so much of Street Fighter that has happened on Nintendo for decades. But Cloud is a middle finger to Nintendo gamers as a reminder of everything Final Fantasy we have been denied since VII.
A character from FFVI or a black Mage, there's ways they could have done a FF crossover to respect the principle of smash brothers. But nope, Cloud has to be the poster boy even with the fact he represents Playstation a lot more than anything else. In the context of smash the only logic to this character is wanting to cater to Japanese fanboys who might have both Nintendo and Sony consoles and possibly several money and blowjob deals behind the scenes. Just like how Snake got in because of Kojima asking for a favor, not because it made sense.
And for the record, I can respect what it means to most gaming fans to have things like FF music in Smash, or to have Link and Cloud fighting it out. That's huge. But coming here and saying that Cloud makes sense in a Nintendo fighter is just stupid whether it happened or not. Because no, he hardly fits in, just like Snake. Heck, unlike Snake he actually looks boring as fuck to use, at least until they explain the limit thing properly. So far he just seems like a better Shulk.
I hope we're all ready for December.

It may be Smash Armageddon. [/hide]
^Damn, this pic is perfect, cruel, cool and I cried a little. Let's see who's next. Not that I care. :ninja:
Say, is the clothes FF Advent Children the only good thing from that movie or is it not bad as people says?
Say, is the clothes FF Advent Children the only good thing from that movie or is it not bad as people says?
There's one scene where all the party members help launch Cloud further into the sky which is pretty cool. Other than that…..I guess Tifa has a sweet fight scene
When he says "all" its… All.
OK, I've decides that if Nintendo is not going to be salty about cloud, I as a fan can't. So I'll find something better to be angry about.
