You can have a platformer and not have jumping in the game as awkward as it makes the gameplay.
But by definition a platformer involves jumping onto platforms. Even bubsy knew that!

New Armikrog promo:
I doubt they'll ever come back to the mainstream (like, with AAA games being made in the genre), kind of like the stealth genre.
The thing I don't understand is that these indie 3d platformers (like the ones I linked to earlier) don't seem to have a large budget at ALL (I think one of them was only $20,000…), so... (and forgive me for my ignorance) wouldn't it cost little to simply have good graphics with them?
And on a slightly unrelated note, how come no one has tried making a platformer with realistic graphics?

You don't have to have jumping in a platformer to consider a game a platformer travesing across them in some alternate manner works just as well.
I once did a no-jump runthrough of Journey.
It wasn't all that fun actually.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. That the indie ones should spend more money on graphics, or something else?
Also there are some platformers that tried realistic graphics. Not any 3D ones as far as I know (unless you count Tomb Raider and Uncharted as platforming games) just because that would look silly I imagine. There were "cinematic" platformers here and there that went for realism, especially in animations. Like Prince of Persia (and you could say the 3D ones, at least at the beginning were platformers and were going for realistic graphics).

What could possibly go wrong? :ninja:

Then that's more of an adventure game.

Sorry, I didn't phrase it well.
I meant that; if Indie developers can make a solid-length, relatively open platform game with decent graphics for such a small amount of money, then how come some of the Console companies' (like Sony and Microsoft) first parties can't make one, with top of the line graphics?
Like, this might extend into game development costs in general I assume.
AAA devs are incredibly inefficient and sink money into things like voice acting and marketing. Often they even make entirely separate showcases for games that don't even make it into the final game, so they're essentially making separate games to show off that take up time and money. That and platforming games aren't mainstream enough anymore for anyone to bother making them. Scripted FPS and cinematic experience games are what AAA devs focus on these days. Not to mention most of these platforming games (and most indie games in general) are being made for PC. With console development there are extra costs I'm pretty sure, though I'm not sure if this applies to first party games. And console development also requires a lot more work to get the game working within the hardware restrictions. Obviously there are also hardware restrictions on PC but it just seems like they're not as strict as on consoles where every bit of power is often required, especially for games that try and push the consoles to their limits, like most AAA games.
Then that's more of an adventure game.
Don't think most people would re-classify a game like Bionic Commando an adventure game.

Bionic Commando is my favorite adventure game

Bionic Commando was the sequel to Hatoful Boyfriend, right?
GOG is having a German games sale with pretty big discounts. Most notable is that Deponia 1 is 97% off so it's a mere 50 cents to purchase.
Hilarious how some of the reasons seem to show that the people voting have no idea what they're talking about. Like how the PS4 is listed as having a bluray player while the Xbone also has one.
Editt: Sorry I mistook this for the what game are you playing now thread. :)

If it's for a Nintendo branded console it's a 99% chance of it being terrible
It's that time again! The annual (or multi-annual, whatever the word for that would be) HL3/other threequels hype train!
Sonic Adventure Battle 3 or nothing.
Sonic 2016.
A remake of Sonic 06 with even more bugs.

I'm going off the rails on the hype train.
Shenmue 3 the hype is real

A Clayfighter remaster will be released for PC in 2016.

I loved that game. Wonder why just PC. Not complaining but it's still weird. I want a remastered version of Pokemon Snap (on PC) too but that'll never happen.

Unless it's fan made of course
I'm sure Nintendo would shut down any attempt to do that. Though this is really caused by devs advertising their copyright infringement and not just working on the game in secret and then releasing it when it's done.
Also, Epic just released UE4 for free. You only need to start paying after you make $3000 by selling your game, then it's 5% of your profits per quarter.

yay now everyone can make Half Life 3
This would be the perfect time for a Pokemon Snap remaster. It's a game that could really benefit from the presence of the gamepad on the Wii U.
Too band Nintendo is too stupid to capitalize on it. I'd actually prefer a new game than a remaster. With more places, more Pokemon, etc. Maybe not on rails too but I'm not sure about that. Having like an FPS with photography as the main gameplay mechanic seems like it could be cool if done right. Like you're a war photographer in some civil war somewhere.

They have to go along with the trends:ninja:

I think Frank West has that covered you know.

There are a couple games like that, such as Afrika. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrika_(video_game)
its not Pokemon safari watching, but photography open world game things do exist.
Beyond Good and Evil had elements of that as well.
Photography Simulator 2016
There's always the new Fatal Frame… that will never get localised

I played that game, though I can't remember the name of it right now. The time limit was annoying as hell and in any case that's not how I am imagining the game I am.

Never heard of this. Sounds essentially like one of those Cabela hunting games but with pictures. Can you die in this game? I want a game where you don't just go out and take pretty pictures without any real challenge.
Beyond Good and Evil had elements of that as well.
Haven't played this yet. Need to. Still probably not what I'm thinking of.

Played a bit of one of the Fatal Frame games on the PS2 and didn't really find it all that enjoyable. Also is the photography mechanics in these games any deeper than essentially using them as a weapon? The actual pictures you take aren't used for much of anything as far as I remember.

Meant to be taken as a joke given the line's meme-like nature
Source 2 officially announced.

Will be free (probably with a similar royalty system that UE4 is doing now) and its focus is on user made content it seems. Still no technical info on the engine itself but I think it's likely that kind of stuff will be shown at the Vulcan/glNext conference on the fifth.

I have to learn how to program/code. I have a good ideas and like to consider myself a visionary, just gotta make the product.
I uh wouldn't call someone a visionary just for rehashing an old gaming formula. Not by a long shot lol
Wayforward is celebrating 25 years by having a sale (and other things)
Also: CrossCode is a game up on IndieGoGo that has a demo out already, if you feel like supporting German developers.

^I love how EA's business is buying up companies, making them make shitty games, and then gutting them when the games fail.
Also apparently there was a Vulkan conference at GDC earlier this morning. One of the big things is that it's 4x faster than OpenGL (under controlled circumstances of course). Also, one of the people involved with Vulkan tweeted that he was surprised at how slow DX12 was at draw calls while watching their conference.
