@Schabrak:
Yeah, I repeatedly mentioned upbringing, the time and room to teach the children that they shouldn't feel bad or think that they are feally forced into those body types and clothes. I'm damn sure the mass media won't help.
It's not exactly easy to ignore the constant bombardment of messages from all sides.
This here's a pretty good summary of the differences of things aimed at men and women.
@Schabrak:
It doesn't have to, he simply draws what's to his liking or maybe the editor's one. Can't fault him for using his freedom as an artist, even less accuse him of perpetuating the problem because there is a choice with other series, in fact hundreds, but yeah I would like to see some other body types too more often.
Yes we can.
It's a problem prevalent in anime and other mediums. Just because other artists do it, doesn't mean it's not a problem when Oda does it too.
@Schabrak:
Assuming to know what I think, not the wisest idea, but not uncommen either. :P It's my opinion, deal with it or not.
You literally told everyone to deal with it, and then in the next sentence said that you'd be happy as long as you didn't have to see panty shots.
@Schabrak:
That entirely depends on what media you consume or cough where you life. The top model shows and clothes industry has clearly lead to a bigger petite demographic here, which often also leads to more fit [looking] girls, as well as well bootied asses since the glateus maximus is worked out more often, but that's to off-topic already.
Except said models are wearing things to show off their "assets". The fashion industry has this weirdly paradoxical "you gotta be supah sexay with huge boobs but you can't weigh much or you're fat" attitude.
And look at anime in general and tell me with a straight face that most female characters aren't flat (and insecure about it) or tittymonsters.
@Schabrak:
That's your opinion, but you can try to convince me with some hard facts proving your claim. I've browed some image boards and the prevalent pictures of shounen ai themed pics including OP character had them beautiful as fuck, often dark, but still good looking. So gay readers aren't finding that body type to their liking, males can't find that to their liking, it can't be for eye candy too? Bah, the presumption that all males are hetero and men in general can't speak about male characters in this kind of way is just ugly.
Are you seriously claiming that it's guys that make shonen ai and yaoi.
Are you seriously claiming that Oda's making male characters for male gaze.
Remember that comic posted a few pages ago? That's exactly what's going on in the fanart community. Ladies aren't into all the muscles, so they're drawing bishonen.
@Schabrak:
Never said it's not problematic, but some of the arguments do fall under artist choice Imo, even if they are not to my liking.
Would you be saying that if the men had their secondary sex characteristics overly emphasized, wore next to nothing, and were expected to run in high heels as if it were the most normal thing ever?
@Schabrak:
Well Red Sonja is the original one and it works out with her theme of speed wearing nearly nothing. Look over your ego and take a look at the plot please.
Ok.
During the Hyborian Age, a red-haired girl named Sonja lived with her family in a humble home in the western Hyrkanian steppes. When Sonja had just turned seventeen years old, a gang of cruel mercenaries killed her father Ivor, her mother and two younger brothers, and burned their house and all their possessions. She survived, but at the cost of her own virginity after she was brutally raped by the leader of the group, leaving her in shame.
Answering Sonja's cry for revenge, the red goddess Scathach appeared to her, and offered to bestow upon her unparalleled skill in battle on the condition that she would never lie with a man unless he defeated her in fair combat. Sonja gladly accepted the offer. She grew to womanhood as a wandering adventurer, and as she journeyed her legend grew as well. She became known as Red Sonja, due to her flame-red hair, fiery personality, and uncanny ability to spill the blood of her enemies wherever she went.
Sure sounds like Rebecca to me!
And I like how people try and justify female characters wearing next to nothing "for speed", yet conveniently ignore that the same thing never applies to male characters.
