Had my second Dragon Box lying around, so:

That's the generic "I haet the DBZ Jpn Ver" thing that's thrown out there.
His voice is natural sounding if you watch DB up through Z in order.
But the biggest problem with the English version of DBZ is the script. They really killed it. in the dub, Goku sounds like a White knight fighting for all that is good and just. That's not Goku.
Here's an actual example:
Japanese Version:
Vegeta: I'm an Elite and you're nothing but a little Low-class worm. The strong elite are kept to fight while the weak are sent to pitiful little planets like this. And now you're going to die at my hand.
Goku: Well, if being a "Low-class worm" is why I got sent to Earth, then I'm glad. Here, we believe a "Low-Class" can beat an "Elite" if he works hard enough.
Vegeta: Heh, you can Try! Now get read to die!Same Exact Scene in the English Dub:
Vegeta: This is your last chance to live. you're very strong, perhaps you could Join me? Think about it Kakarott, we could conquer countless planets together! We'd be unstoppable.
Goku: Sorry, but that kind of thing isn't for me, and besides, there doesn't seem to be much job security as your partner.
Vegeta: Heh, too bad.This fundamentally changes Vegeta's character. In the Japanese version, he's a cold asshole who believes there's a clear divide between "Elite" and "Low-Class", the elite step on the low-class, and that's it. He never offers Son a chance to join him, thinking him too pitiful. He even killed Nappa BECAUSE He lost to Son. Now in the English version, why did he Kill Nappa now? It makes no sense.
The whole series' script was RIFE with stuff like that.
I wanna put my two cents in on this before it's too late. I'm a HUGE Dragon Ball fan too, and I just want to say while I like the Japanese version, I also like the English version. Both of them are completely watchable to me. I grew up with the dub and didn't get exposed to the Japanese version until later on.
When I first saw the Japanese version, I thought the voices were too plain and that the English version had more variety. Goku's Japanese voice kinda bugged me, but it grew on me. I've always loved Krillin's Japanese voice though (I'm sure you know why). I know some people could say that Goku's voice is the same case as Luffy's, but to me, I don't think it is. Mayumi sounds a tiny bit more "masculine" than Masako and Luffy is supposed to be cute and scrawny. While Goku was like that for a while, he became a huge, muscley powerhouse. Kinda unfitting if you don't give it a chance to get used to.
And then there's the BGM. I like both the Japanese score and Bruce Faulconer's music. They're both good in their own ways, but sometimes I feel like Bruce's music is just a tad more appropriate.
To sum it up, I like both versions, even if the dub is a bit "different." I grew up with it so that's what I'm used to. It annoys me how some people hate on the English version and don't even have one good thing to say about it, and act like the Japanese version can do no wrong.

Might as well state my opinion too.
I like the Funimation and Japanese versions of Dragon Ball. To be honest, I had no idea about the mistakes Funimation made until I watched the Japanese version. I was a little surprised.
As far as voices go, I love the English voices, but the Japanese voices fit better at times. With the case of Nozawa, it is only unfitting for Goku (IMO), if you never heard her voice Kid Goku prior. If so, you would think that it Nozawa makes the voice flow nicely with age. And yes, it was a little irritating that Goku's personality was changed. But in the long run, Funimation has improved their DBZ dub over time, though some mistakes remain. Either way, it's good. I fully acknowledge that the Japanese version is better than the English, especially the music. I'm done.
Also, I'm a little late, but I can't believe Mr.3 and Hiei have the same VA. I knew Mr.3 and Link were voiced but the same guy, but throwing Hiei into the mix just shows me what a range Hiyama has.
And the next set is filler, eh? Well, One Piece is One Piece. (Even though, it is filler…..)

I grew up with the Cell Saga DBZ and i loved it, never knew anything in terms of voices, always loved Stephanie Nadoly as Gohan and small Goku in DB and Sean will always be better to me than Nozawa only since i was drawn into the whole Superhero BS they littered the place with.
As for Sabat most of the time you didnt notice it was Sabat unless you were looking at Vegeta or Piccolo(Or maybe you did, I didnt)
You know its really easy to identify Chris now because of DBZ, so im contradicting myself.
Now with the music, i agree at times Bruce Faulconer seems more appropriate at times like when power ups occur or when Vegeta is kicking some ass....But....I do find at most times the japanese pull through and deliver a much better soundtrack and music since it is the "Original" and the music is pretty golden. (Spirit vs Spirit anyone?)
Oh 1 more thing i HATE....HATE bruce faulconers Cell theme.

I find the DBZ dub abysmal. There's only a few things that are actually good, but that are far outweighed by the bad.
The worst part are its fans constantly raving about it though. Not only do they slam on actual good anime dubs like DemonRin said, they also act as if the DBZ dub is super accurate.
The DBZ dub is comparable to your average 4Kids dub, except that the former doesn't have ridiculous censoring.
And that's not going into the massive Orange Brick love and Dragon Box hate, all because the latter is Japanese and doesn't have SUPER AWESOME HARDCORE BRUCE FAULCONER!!!
And Schemmel and Nadolny never did more voices they became famous with. That says enough about how warranted they are in the anime dubbing industry. The DBZ dub needs to be carried by FUNi's BEST actors, not their worst.

I only watch the Japanese version of DBZ lately. I grew up on the DBZ dub though. I used to watch in everyday on Toonami. Eventually I started to watch Japanese clips online but it never made me hate the dub. I still think FUNi's voices are good. The music was fine too. I sometimes enjoyed Bruce's music. Now I'd much rather listen to the original score though. And I really don't have a problem with Freeza's voice. Freeza sounds pretty feminine in the English version but also does in the Japanese version. I was watching Kai yesterday and realized that Freeza just sounds really feminine.

Actually I always thought that was one of his few good tunes. I never liked the actual instrumentation of it, but the melody was good, and other folks have used it to make some amazing remixes that really do Cell justice.
To be honest, probebly the only time I ever liked the dub BGM was when Cell came back from his suicide explosion, and there was a rendition of his theme that sounded like the music itself was freaking out that he was back.

I know I said I was going to leave this alone, but yeah, the only reason that most people are so accepting of the crappy job FUNi has done with Dragonball is that they grew up on it and have a strong attachment to it. Hell, I totally understand that. I absolutely loved the Digimon dub (which still had better actors and music than the DBZ bub anyway…) for all it's inaccuracy and corny one liners and to this day I still prefer to watch it in dub form, but the difference is that I would never try to claim objectively that it was superior to the original.
About the whole Nozawa being unfitting thing, honestly, kids will take what you give them. As a nine year-old watching the series, I didn't question the voice for a second and was even a little surprised to learn later on that it was a woman. She's very convincing in that role, especially if you watch from the original Dragonball, whereas Schemmel.... err... well he really did try. Well yeah, if you were first exposed to Dragon Ball in Japanese I'm sure it'd be really easy to accept Masako Nozwawa as Goku. But if someone watches a random DBZ clip and hear Goku being voiced by a woman, they'd go "wtf?" As for Schemmel, I think he makes a perfect Goku. I may be the minority here but I think his voice totally fits him. As for MasakoX… while he's good for a parody, no, I wouldn't ever want him as an official voice. No way.

Cant go wrong with Brian Drummond as Vegeta to bad Ocean had terrible music, sound FX were stupidly added in over the real ones and i never did like anyone outside Vegeta and piccolo.

I agree with you there. I didn't like Ocean's music, or the majority of the voices at all. Actually I think Brian Drummond's Vegeta only suited him in the Sayian and Freeza sagas because that's when he was smaller. I think Sabat's voice suits him throughout the whole series, though.

I can only listen to Sabat as Vegeta if he Re-dubs his lines. basically i only wanna listen to him Post 2004. His early Vegeta to me is hard to listen to all annoying and younger. I like his voice now as vegeta or since DBZ Orange brick #1,2, and 3.

Yeah. Sabat's deeper Vegeta voice is totally awesome. It makes him sound like an assholey hardass. His Brian Drummond impersonation was just weird. I'm glad he was able to develop it.

Yeah, I do like current Vegeta and current Piccolo.
It's funny that Zoro originally sounded very much like Piccolo, but Sabat's current Piccolo now sounds like Zoro. And I'm okay with that.
Krillin is amazing though. Sonny Strait FTW!
And I know people who believe original season 3 Vegeta is better than redubbed season 3 Vegeta. >___>

It doesn't seem as if Funimation realizes that seventh voyage will be entirely filler, so we probably won't be getting anything special aside from the usual commentary. Then again, this set will be the first time that we hear ending 9 in DVD quality \o/

Actually, it did have the ridiculous censoring. FUNi had been doing the dub since the beginning. In the beginning, they just subcontracted the word to Ocean, it wasn't owned by Ocean, it was still FUNi. That version cut 12 episodes worth of material and is responsible for "HFIL", Tenshinhan's ability to Regrow arms, Vegeta saying Goku's Father was a "BRILLIAN SCIENTIST!" and Nappa blowing up a plane, only to have Tenshinhan remark "I can see the parachutes, They're Ok!"
They didnt lighten up on the edits until Season 3 when they started doing the series in-house.
That being said, and to get this conversation back to One Piece, I REALLY don't like seeing people rag on the One Piece dub for minor things like Luffy adding in "That's What Friends do… HES GONNA PAY!" in Arlong Park, or ragging on Certain attacks and acting like any minute change from the Japanese version is like FUNimation is personally going to Eiichiro Oda's house and kicking him. But then this same person turns around and says "But I like the DBZ Dub". It's odd. "I hate The most minor of changes to One Piece, but I love a dub where they changed everything".
Bendario is a shining example of this. Back during Arlong Park, I remember him complaining about Arlong's attacks, and Sanji's lack of French. But he JUST said he can't stand DBZ in Japanese, and the DBZ dub is MUCH worse than anything the OP dub has done. It's a double standard, and it's kinda messed up.

The issue here is One Piece fans continually forgetting the anime is not the manga and trying to seperate the filler from the anime. That's how most fans think, as opposed to those who only have the anime to go off of. As good or bad as some filler may or may not be, we can't seperate the anime in tersm of 'canon' and 'filler' all of the time.
And my lord, was that DBZ dub clip terrible…

I'm going to wait for a price drop for S2-7V. I've gotten all the sets as soon as they came out up till now, but I just can't pay $50 (taxes, shipping) for a set of filler I don't like. Once it goes down, sure, but not till then.
Though, I liked the one-shot filler episodes much more. I kinda wish Toei would've done more of those, instead of having to craft elaborate filler arcs all the time. We actually had one right before Sabaody, that focused on Brooke, which I enjoyed quite a bit. The some of the one-shot filler episodes after Alabasta serve the same purpose for Robin. I was kinda disappointed we didn't get a Franky-centric filler episode after Enies Lobby.
Though as bad as Goat Island and Rainbow Mist is, Ocean's Dream is my personal most hated filler. Some people love it, that's cool, but I couldn't stand it. Maybe because it followed so closely after G8, a goddamn awesome filler arc, that its faults stand out a lot more, I don't know.

doesn't rightstuf ship to Canada? It's a lot cheaper (especially when there's a funimation sale) plus you should get it a while before the release date.

I admit, I never checked. But the extra cost with Amazon comes from shipping and taxes, the base price seems to be the same when not on sale, so I don't know if Rightstuf would be any cheaper.
Are there any other Canadians here that use Rightstuf that can confirm how much the sets usually cost when new?

ah damn is the cell song so damn awesome. makes me want to pop in one of my orange boxes. Speaking fo that, so glad finaly have all of DBZ set in complete and uncut.
I'm sure sometime when i'm older and have a good job with money to spend i'll buy the newest format, you know like say whats after blu ray and all of dbz on it. speaking of which i need to start collecting the box set for dragonball. i hear they finally got the rights to the first 13 episodes or whatever. the boxes are teh same as the dbz ones essentailly right? like 30-35 episodes a box set and uncut?

Its actually neither. It's a new arrangement and remix of a Dub BGM done by a fan, in tune is sounds generally the same, but the arrangement is completely different.

Them constantly replacing "nakama" with "friends" when "crew" or "shipmates" is more appropriate grates me to know end.
Let alone them making Zoro's VA talking through a pencil.
