There's a different definition of fodder in this thread other than the common one.
For John Giant it's because it was his first showing in battle and he did nothing. The whole SN argument has been rehashed in here as well.
The sarcastic example for Akainu is terrible since he stood up against him before and put a hole in him, then killed Ace, and then took off half of WB's face. Getting 2 shotted isn't the same as getting 1 shotted anyway especially the way it happened to AKainu.
A character may be used as "fodder" in one situation and not be it in another, like in the case of the Pacifistas I mentioned. This is the case of John Giant: for a character that first appeared waaaaay back on East Blue (when Luffy first got a bounty), he being one-shoted by Whitebeard made him fodder. It doesn't matter WHO defeated him: what's important is what he's done in the story before he's defeated: John Giant did NOTHING. His role in the story was to be defeated and just that.
So, you can't say Jozu was fodder, for instance. He stopped Mihawk's attack, beated Crocodile, fought Aokiji for a while and made him bleed, and THEN was defeated. Far from fodder.

I don't think any of the commanders, except maybe Atmos, could be called fodder. None of them was easily defeated (again, maybe Atmos was). This is war after all, Oda can't stop and show every single big shot fighting.

Yep. Actually, after Marco and Jozu, Vista seems to be one of the more prominent commanders. Not only he fought Mihawk (without getting hurt!), but he was also attacking Akainu side by side with Marco to protect Ace and Luffy (and Akainu acknowledges that they are both haki users). And he was not defeated by anyone.

Screen time has nothing to do with it. As far I'm concerned, a fodder character is someone who accomplishes nothing or someone you could remove from the main story, and it would have no effect. (ex: bascially everyone from Thriller Bark, besides Moria, Oars, and Perona)

What? They put up a good fight! They were fighting an Admiral AND a pacifista and it took them two chapters to be defeated. I still think that fight was amazing as a "glimpse" of their abilities, and they are still in the story, so they are far from fodder. The Strawhats were also defeated by a similar force (plus Sentoumaru), but remember that we are talking about four captains, not nine Strawhats!

Fought the dog-riding troops in Enies Lobby;
Saved the Franky Family in the courtroom, defeating those jurymen and allowing the FF to partially lower the drawbridge;
(Paulie) saved them twice after they were defeated by the marines: first by untieing (sp?) the ropes that were binding them, and them by saving everyone from falling in the Enies Lobby abyss.
Seriously, someone has to provide a plausible definition. You can't just call anyone that was defeated fodder just because it showed off the strength of the victor imo. I always thought fodder was expendable and had little or no relevance to the plot.

It's a pretty important point, reinforced through the entire war, that Whitebeard is not in his prime. For a diseased old man, Whitebeard has been truly formidable, and so far is the only character in the entire series to defeat an Admiral. He's going down, that's for sure, but he will bring Marine HQ down with him.
If all he wanted was to bring them down, he could've done it a long time ago. Besides I don't think that it really matters how old is he when he has that kind of devil fruit ability that can let him destroy the world. Sengoku was surely talking about his current self and not "this WAS the man that could destroy the world".

Blind destruction was never Whitebeard's goal. He could yes destroy islands or raze towns with his power, but that was never his purpose. His ability is a trick one: the strongest uses would be really hard to control, just like an atomic bomb.
John Giant, sure he's supposed to be like the strongest navy giant, but epicface raped him…but he rapes everybody so it doesn't really matter
A lot of characters featured are probably being saved by Oda for future usage. If we knew how every character worked it would be boring and obvious how they would fight if they ever fought against the strawhats. Jozu has yet to do anything except get messed up by Doflo and hurt Crocodile . I'm seriously gunning for T-Bone to be a future rival of Zoro
I've also been disappointed with Whitebeard, especially shots of him standing around doing fuck all. At first when he created the tsunamis, got the better of Aokiji, effortlessly defeated that giant and then tilted the whole ocean… I thought he'd go on to causing some real damage. But after that, he did nothing really, he just stood around next to Kizaru for a few chapters... until now, where finally it seems he's taken a big character out. That's what I've wanted. Now hopefully Oda will show Whitebeard fuck everyone up.

He wasn't going to hurt them just to cause some damage. He was playing smart, and he was planning. He had to try and read into Sengoku's strategy so his men wouldn't get caught like they did, unfortunately, Sengoku is obviously smarter and bested WB here. This latest chapter proves all of this.

I knew he wouldn't destroy the island straight up, but I expected him to take out stronger people sooner. I'm sure WB can contain his power enough just to take big players out, without fucking everything up. We didn't see that until now. I was thinking that in order to save Ace, he'd have to battle through and kick some ass. Luffy was more progressive.

To defeat Akainu, it took the same blow that destroyed the main Marine HQ! I don't think earthquakes can be used as a precise tool. Everything WB did was massive in scale and full of colateral damage.

First, WhiteBeard doesn't give a shit about the island, he even said to Akainu "try and stop me!" when he started rampaging around.
Second, saying that WhiteBeard is not attacking on purpose is BS. Then why bringing all his men when he can go and destroy the marines by himself? Besides, his crew know exactly when to back off from the battlefield:

Sengoku succeeded in destroying Moby Dick, but WhiteBeard already had another one coated below. The walls were good tho.
