This has been my favorite chapter. Not because it is new, but I love how Boa reacted to "You really piss me off". Amazing. I also loved when Luffy yelled at the audience when those three got turned to stone.
Chapter 518 "Battle Arena" Discussion
-
-
Margaret will join the crew. Remember, Luffy always wanted a statue!
-
@Shaman:
omg whats with the plea for flash backs. also she doesnt need it right away like robin and nami cause they didnt get flash backs in the arcs they were introduced
Because Marguerite is a little different… Amazon Lily is her home island, and as it sounds, she's never left the island before. While Nami and Robin have left their respective homes and had their backstories developed on the arc that deals with them specificly, Marguerite has not left her home (as we know).
So we are all looking for a backstory to confirm it, if not... Her chances of joining would be sliced in half unless Luffy asks or agrees. (I don't speak for everyone but that's how I feel is the general energy in the thread...)
-
The big news was that he turned in his chapter late so there will be no one piece chapter next week, he tells his fans he is sorry.
Has this ever been confirmed?
-
but didn't he want a bronze statue, specifically? XD
or was that a mistranslation in Unlimited Adventure? And I'm pretty sure "snake-neck people" are just people with outstanding necks, as opposed to powers of transformation (just as Apoo is a long arm man).
-
I don't see how this means Margaret will be joining. Until she gets a flashback I'm absolutely doubting she'll join.
What did you think of Nami and Robin joining? They didn't get flashbacks until arcs after they joined. It seems like a pattern of the women who join the SHs are an exception to the flashback rule.
I mean you didn't think Brook was gonna join until his flashback chap?
LOL
-

LOL
While it's true the women are an exception to the rule. Which if you look at it, it just follows Oda's pattern. Men get a flashback immediately, Women get it later.
What's unexpected would be if Marguerite joins the same way as the men in terms of the background rule, and that would make a great twist in terms of recruitment.
As I said not too long ago, Nami and Robin were traveling before they joined, Marguerite sounds like she's been on Amazon Lily all her life.
-
I just don't see how she's a potential crew member. She reminds me of Conis. And you know what else seems to be a pattern? Females with pets do not join. Vivi and Conis and probably another two soon.
-
i dont remember the snake being a pet cause she doesnt even relise its there and only see it as a weapon
-
More Jungle Book referrences this week with that giant black panther…
So Mellow Mellow power only works if you're having dirty thoughts about Boa? lol
Luffy IS still a man, I kinda hope he's not supposed to be so innocent he doesnt feel a tiny bit of lust for women whatsoever. That kinda ruins things for the LufXNami fans, but I guess it could mean he's gay which should please ZoroXLuffy fans!
-
Luffy loves adventure more than Boa
-

That's true, in fact this arc reminds me of the Skypiea arc. (Just because I can state that she is able to join, doesn't mean I can't say she can't.)

What's next? A giant bear? sings bare necessities
I've seen people say that the bath scene and Bon Clay's transformation prove that Luffy isn't gay… Somewhere... Been lurking around places for too long...
-
I guess it can be handwaved by claiming that the first time he was thinking about the mysterious mark, and the second he was in full ''WTF! I gotta get outta here!'' mode.
-
@_Meh_:
Hmmm….
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamamo-no-MaeA beautiful, but evil woman and a 'Killing Stone'. Another Japanese folktale finds an interpretation in One Piece?
Did you even read that? The woman wasn't evil, an astrologer accused her of being evil, possibly out of jealously. She was wise and kind and extremely beautiful.
If anything, that story sounds more like the origins of Naruto.
Anyway, this was a decent chapter. Boa's sisters seem to have two different Snake Zoans, and it looks like Margarite's done for, at least until Luffy can reverse the process. But even if he did, wouldn't she have asphyxiated by then?
-

Or Luffy's just stupid.
-
Since any woman is affected by Boa's power, I believe gay people would be as well (you just have to be moved by her beauty, you don't need to want to fuck her). So Luffy is not gay… or he is, but not because of this specific scene :wassat:
And gotta love the final page. "Two giant snakes dancing around the 'helpless' prey in the middle of the arena being watched by a noisy crowd" is a good scene to pass the feeling of the Amazon Lily.
-
The reason for Luffy not turning to stone is simple, he has a one track mind. When he saw Boa's back, is thoughts were on the mark, and obviously not lecherous. Actually, I think the mark on the back is the key to undoing the stone curse, maybe if it's flashed before someone turned to stone, it will break the curse.
I really liked this chapter. It was classic Luffy through and through, with the blank expression of confusion when the beam didn't affect him, to the OHKO on the panther, getting mad at an enemy leader that dares to hurt their own friends (and even the rest of the town for not being upset about it), and even ignoring the charms of Boa and telling her off. A perfect chapter in my opinion.
-
What was the supposed message that Oda had and for that matter, is OP taking a break next week for sure?
-
@.access:

A noisy crowd shouting "Kill Kill Kill" no less.
-
You think hitting the same beam on a stoned person would revert them back to normal?
I don't really see Luffy winning with just one punch. So the sisters will probably hold him down long enough to get him petrified but Boa will miss and hit the sisters and in a fit of rage starts shooting at Luffy while turning the audience in to stone but releasing Margaret and her friends.
-

Boa didn't miss the two other times when she tried to turn Luffy in to stone. So I don't think holding him down would make a difference. They'll mos t likely try to kill him by fighting.
From what BF said there is no chap next week.
-
Well I don't think shes not a 100% sure if she what had happened. But wouldn't it be kinda funny to see her petrify everyone while Luffy just jumped around dodging stuff.
Interesting seeing Margaret standing up for Luffy. This makes things more interesting. Don't worry about her friends though, they only joined because of her plea to Boa.
AND I KNEW someday Oda would take a break from OP at a moment where my OP hype is at it's peak. I wanna know if he gets a new nakama or not!
-
What I don't get is why Margaret and the others didn't get an intro box thing like most important characters do when they first appear? Does it mean that she's not that important to the overall plot, or was it because of some sort of a panel constraint? (personally, I'm sorta hoping for the latter)
-
@Pirate_King_Sage:
I don't know which Hueco Mundo scan YOU looked at but FH and the HM one I have are almost the same, except FH has some of the dialog more bolder to add emotion, but honestly they translate almost exactly the same, both completely readable (except for that one page in the FH scan) which, to ME, makes the HM one more better.
The top picture is the raw, while the bottom picture is the Hueco Mundo scanlation.Look at the panel in the raw where Luffy is falling out of the window after being shot. The big bubble is where Hancock says "Pistol Kiss!" and the next bubble is Luffy saying "Aah!" In the scanlation, the sound effect in the panel before that one is written as "Pistol Kiss" and the next 3 lines are misplaced as well.
This is why scanlation teams should have proper editors to make sure the script and manga actually match.
-
@Fire Fist:

You know, if I hadn't read it, I doubt I would have found the part about the Sessho Seki, in which case I probably wouldn't have made any connection between this and OP.
To review the story:
1.) Everyone at the court adored Tamamo-no-Mae for her unparalleled beauty and wisdom; the Emperor doted on her.
2.) The Emperor mysteriously falls ill. He seeks help from priests and fortune-tellers, but to no avail.
3.) After seeking help from everyone else, an astrologer tells him that Tamamo-no-Mae is a kitsune plotting to take the throne after he dies of illness.
4.) Shortly after this, Tamamo-no-Mae disappears from the court.
5.) Emperor Konoe sends two warriors to kill the fox. One of them succeeds, and the fox becomes a stone that kills anyone who touches it.
As knowledable as she apparently was, I think she would have tried to diagnose his illness, if not recommend a course of treatment. Instead, she flees the court, and does indeed turn out to be a nine-tailed fox, just as predicted. Unless the astrologer was also a kitsune, how did he deceive everyone into thinking Tamamo was a kitsune? Did you read the article?
@Fire Fist:
If anything, that story sounds more like the origins of Naruto.
Yes, this story and several others about kitsune probably contributed to Naruto's origins; especially in light of Jiraiya's Noh opera origin.
" … the play called "Tamamo no Mae asahi no tamoto" written by three playwrights for the puppet (jôruri) theater and first staged in 1751. It was later revised and restaged in 1806 in Osaka, and it is the latter version that is better known today. ... a good synopsis of the play [is] in The Bunraku Handbook by Shuzaburo Hironaga, Maison des Arts Inc., Tokyo, Japan, 1976, pp. 369-373 … .
Lady Tamamo is a nine-tailed fox who kills a young woman of the Emperor’s court, assumes her identity, and gains employment as a lady-in-waiting. She soon becomes the Emperor’s favorite concubine, but then later joins a prince who plots to dethrone the Emperor and agrees to use her supernatural powers to aid him. When the Emperor becomes ill, the chief astrologer of the court accuses her of having an evil influence and causing the illness.
Tamamo no Mae survives the trial, but later during a prayer to assist the Emperor, the astrologer cleverly uncovers her true identity. She then takes back her fox form and flees. During her escape Tamamo no Mae assumes various forms (a country girl, a masseur, a god of thunder, a man, a street girl, a courtesan, and once again Lady Tamamo)."@Fire Fist:

How long did Zoro, Nami, and Vivi have before they asphyxiated from Mr. 3's wax? Also, how long did Oda stretch that fight out for? Unless he plans to kill the three of them off, they're safe.
-
Just curious, has anyone suggested the possibility that Luffy could accidentally utilize Haki unknowingly during his fight with the Boa sisters? They would be like Ahh, he is using Haki bleh bleh bleh, and the Luffy would be like "Eh!??" what's Haki!? And then they would be like "whaaa??? You are using it foo!"
Ok, probably won't happen but I thought it would be a funny turn of events. Oda would make it better though >_>
-
^But wouldn't that make Luffy weaker if he was actually relying on haki instead of brute strength? Haki is strong but having natural brute strength is stronger.
-
thanks for the chapter, one go to bacura
this chapter proves that Hancock power will not affected Zoro, haha, because it does not affected luffy.
-
Wondering if Haki is just another form of fighting used by the bad guys like Mantra and Doriki or whatever… something that gets people speculating if the crew will learn to use it. The big difference is that lately there has been lots of foreshadowing of learning something similar to Haki ever since the initial encounter with Duval and Luffy making his buffalo pass out. Then Rayleigh fighting a logia with a sword to boot... seems like the story has been heavy in hints in something new being added to Luffy's repertoire... so is it going to be Haki, or should that get overlooked like the previous bad guy fighting styles?
And do you suppose that the curse is a story made up to protect whatever is on the Gorgon sisters' backs? If the stone transformation is just a part of a devil fruit (as well as a couple of snake zoans), then couldn't the symbol on the back be unrelated to those powers? Maybe a tatoo they prefer stayed hidden. Wouldn't be surprised if the curse was false... Also wouldn't be surprised if someone posted this exact speculation already...
-
@Kuso:
^But wouldn't that make Luffy weaker if he was actually relying on haki instead of brute strength? Haki is strong but having natural brute strength is stronger.
No, I meant that he started to use it for the first time. So his brute strength + haki. But still I don't think it will happen…just would be funny. I think. Maybe not.

This was one great chapther!
Hancocks "kiss pistol" was a great attack…. -
Luffy is not gay or innocent, he isn´t like Goku.
He is a character with high moral values thanks to the fact that Shanks saved him and you don´t need to be pure of heart or gay for seeing that Hancock is just a repulsive woman.
In real life I have seen a lot of real women like her, with the same attitude "I am pissing off the people and they will forgive me because I am hot". The only thing that I am seeing in this chapter is that Luffy is disgusted by the rooted moral valued of the island.
-
No straight man should be able to resist those legs.
-
Okay, after reading this I will add my own theory:
It was mentionend, that the "gorgon sisters" where cursed when fighting this snake-like monster, and therefore no one may watch their backs.
Could it be that the sisters where defeated by this monster/monsters and then the snake monsters took over their bodies? And on the back you can see the place where the snakes entered their bodies?
They only problem is that I can not remember Luffy seeing anything like this before…
The reason why the warriors don't recognize devil fruit powers and brute force is another simple one - their is no more fighting involved when they encounter enemies - Hancock just turns them to stone. Battle over - they won without any problems.
What do you think?
-
I've seen it asked a lot but no one has answered it:
Where is it confirmed that there is no chapter next week?

theres a flaw with that theory, i like the thought about the sisters losing the battle and being cursed. But the theory about the amazons not getting into fights anymore is flawed because they obivously fight among themselves to test strength and they are amazed by brute force because they all been trained into using haki as a fighting form.
Its like someone learning a trick before they master the basics, luffy's fists alone can harm metal and crush tough enemies because hes reaching a high level of mastery in brute force, now if he learned a trick his power would be dangerously high. So i think they do fight, but they went about learning how to fight differently to suit them but probably not the best way.

I'm not surprised that the amazons don't know much about brute force. First of all they are females and on the second hand the beautiful amongst them are not suppose to defeat their enemies with brute force. I mean look at them … Therefor it makes sense for them to use a boost technique to crush their enemies. Ladies and gentlemen the new doping substance for the new world iiiisssss "haki".
-
I haven't seen Luffy like this since Romance Dawn(East Blue). Way he goes crushing Boa's self-esteem. Page 15 16 and 17 were just great.
-
She is such an arrogant bitch. Even if she is powerful, i don't think that she deserves anyones respect.
-
OMG !!! I love this chapter. It's Ener all over again. But this finally prove one thing. Luffy's IQ is so low he doesn't understand the beauty of a female body.
Personally I love the way he whooped the panther, but i kinda see that coming.
About the sisters… I don't think they're fruit users because Oda has stated that no two fruit are the same. So theres no way they both can turn into snake. Unless it's a zoan fruit type snake but different model, you know..like anaconda or python (since boa already taken).
-
Luffy is not the first to resist Hancock's "beauty". Momonga was also able to resist her will, when she demanded him to give up all his ships belongings. This proves that having a strong will is enough to "win" over Hancock's spoiled attitude.
(Also, the old lady resisted Hancock as well)
Also, it is quite simple why Luffy can resist the mero mero merrow: his mind is focused on his Nakama right now. Nothing is more important than meeting them. Boa Hancock is just a hindrance to his goal, and as such he has no desire for her.
And, finally, I think all this "gorgon curse" is bullshit. The Boa sisters are lying, their powers come from Devil Fruits, but they use the curse to hide their backs. I think their backs hide some great shame. Maybe they were defeated by Whitebeard, and were forced to have his tattoos on their backs. That's why Luffy reckognizes it from somewhere (because he's an idiot, you know).
That's also why Hancock has no desire of fighting Whitebeard again.

hhmmm…guys thx for all the link....the chapter is good....
but the the thread just seems going to be circles around...slightly boring..not many interesting posting going around...just my opinion..not trolling around...
-
The spoiler made the chapter sound quite lame. The chapter however, well that was awesome. The best bit was the "he only used brute force, no haki at all" that was mega. I'm also loving the fact that Luffy is now considered completely asexual, it would appear the only woman that's ever phased him is Nami and that was in Arabasta.
-

It's due (IMHO) to the fact that everything has been discussed so far and that we are still waiting for what luffy saw on Hancocks back if she has more tricks than just make people fall in love with her and the fact that ODA didn't gave us enough with this haki. He keeps on teasing us. I just hope that in the next chapters haki will be revealed. Otherwise i don't see the point in stating "haki haki haki" everywhere and not give the fans what they really need :) On the other hand it's not really interesting to know if the sisters are all cursed or if they have a DF power. I'm still waiting for the crew to unite again. To kick boa's ass is not so important now. Luffy needs to learn a new technique that's why he is in the arena now i think. So maybe that the next chapter will give us more informations to discuss?
-
Up till now, we assumed that Garp wasn't in the New World because he was like Luffy and got in trouble, say is he's just not in the New World fighting because he doesn't know how to use Haki and thus isn't suited to fighting against top tier opponents?
-
Up till now, we assumed that Garp wasn't in the New World because he was like Luffy and got in trouble
Where do you get this stuff?
I have never heard of a Why-Garp-is-not-in-the-New-World discussion before. Am glad to have missed it. -

???
How can he harm luffy with a punch? That part has been discussed in the haki threads :) I think that garp is really powerfull and if he "knows the sea" as Whitebeard said i assume highly that he has been in the new world. -
-
Garp hounded Gold Roger.
Garp and Sengoku were mentioned by Whitebeard as "the few old-timers left around".Garp is really strong. I bet he gets around everywhere as he's needed, including the New World.
She felt for it in a moment.
But she resisted it an instant later, and without any outside interference (like Momonga's marines, who resisted Hancock's commands after Momonga yelled at them). As long as Hancock do not gets what she wants, she's being resisted, right?
