Stfu .
Dragonball and One Piece are friends, I'd prefer we not pit them against each.
In Japan it stands above series like Bleach and Naruto. It is this generations most popular series. In Japan. The only other shows ahead of One Piece are the classic series. Which one piece will most likely be considered to the future. In Japan. In America, if its not on Adult Swim or Naruto, they dont give a shit. Seriously. Same thing with Dragonball Z. Its a good show, but it was treated like a freaking Godsend to T.V. Nothing else mattered. If it wasnt DBZ, fuck it! Naruto is the new dragonball z in the U.S. No other anime right now has more advertisements, games, or screentime than Naruto.
The reason why Bleach survives is because its on Adult Swim and its basically uncensored. People like uncensored. Uncensored says FU to the FCC. And nobody likes the FCC, right? The FCC and 4kids are best friends.
I, personally, like Naruto. I do. Its a good series, and I recommend anyone to read it. But its not the only series out there. But its also not the greatest series out there right now, or the greatest series ever for that matter, for anyone who dares to say so. Not even OP is the best series ever. But OP is more than likely more popular than both Naruto and Bleach + any other series right now in Jump that I have knowledge of. [In Japan]
EDIT: One more point. Naruto is more popular in the U.S. because it was on CN/Toonami first. Remember the crapass dubbing that Naruto had before episode 26 or 27? Two words "BELIEVE IT" The dubbing was ALMOST as bad as 4kids. But after 26 or so episode, they realized how bad it sounded. So they actually fixed the problems [First 26 episodes minus the two words] If 4kids OP had been on CN/Toonami first, it'd probably be what Naruto is now. maybe
[Doesnt want to admit or remember when OP was aired by 4kids ever occurred - Like when Zoro wiped his memory of how Kokoro was a mermaid, LOL]
[citation needed]
OP is great from a critical perspective, but Jump has come out with legends that have influenced Japanese visual culture as a whole. OP is merely the current king in a long and prestigious lineage of manga - I wouldn't put it on the same footing as say Mazinger Z, DB, HnK, Jojo, Slam Dunk etc.
As for my view on OP's popularity, OP is more popular with college aged kids who can appreciate the level of maturity in the title. Sure, OP is intended for children but Oda still pours a lot of emotion into his writing; it's not like adults are shielded from ideas like "friendship" just because they're more worldly.
They can also appreciate that it's different from other manga; it's not bold or innovative, but it's not afraid to experiment or come up with wacky ideas or concepts. It's a liberating kind of guilty pleasure; even well-read manga fans can agree with this.
As a whole, it's not popular in America and the R1 region in general (Canada, US) but is fairly popular elsewhere, and is #1 for Japan's manga. Some of this popularity is because people read OP because it's said to be #1, but it likely has more true fans even then than its Jump siblings.
Personal opinion: OP's popularity now is fine, it doesn't need a fanbase as large as Naruto or Bleach. If part of the enjoyment of the title is the community, and a community like AP can still be large and good, we don't need it to get so large that it is out of hand.
I don't know what you mean with "I wouldn't put it on the same footing as say…", that is if you consider it superior to them or not, but IMO it clearly is superior to all the other mangas you compared it to. Also its not so great popularity in countries like USA is mostly due to the horrible anime which is aired there(or at least that's what I heard people saying, I'm not from US).
EDIT: One more point. Naruto is more popular in the U.S. because it was on CN/Toonami first. Remember the crapass dubbing that Naruto had before episode 26 or 27? I know you're refering to American TV, but in this country (The UK), Naruto is edited to 4kids standards by the channel it airs on here, Jetix, with all blood, and most weaponplay removed. And as for One Piece back when it aired, it only aired on Toonami here. So just because it aired on Cartoon Network/Toonami doesn't mean that it'd definatley end up being good. Overall I'm against dubs anyways. (Not that it helps that most dubs I've seen where edited to shit. Only one I saw that wasn't edited to shit was Outlaw Star).
But this is getting off-topic. I just thought I'd add something to that little bit of what you said.
4kids killed it, but cartoon network could have fixed it with the funi version if they had started from episode 1. People who have never really watched one piece wouldn't wanna start in the middle of the series when i they have no idea what is going on.
NOW!
But that could've been a problem in regards to the people who had watched the series from the start back when 4Kids was still doing it.
In America, if its not on Adult Swim
Actually not all series aired on Adult Swim wind up being very popular.
EDIT: One more point. Naruto is more popular in the U.S. because it was on CN/Toonami first.
Even so One Piece got a dub before Naruto did, and at the end of the day 4 Kids just wasn't able to make a killing with the series like they did with Pokemon & YuGiOh.
Remember the crapass dubbing that Naruto had before episode 26 or 27? Two words "BELIEVE IT" The dubbing was ALMOST as bad as 4kids.
So the first 26 episodes of the series were terrible because Naruto's constant uttering of two simple words? yea that sounds very agreeable.
But why? I'm wtching Naruto myself but compared to OP the characters are boring and the story is messed up with Uchiha shit.
And yet despite all the grievances you have over Naruto and it's being more popular than OP in some circles you still read it.
I just DONT understand at all why Naruto is appealing. I watched a few episodes on Fox Kids [UK] and was just watching to see whats so interesting about it, I saw acouple of episodes but was bored to hell with all this "training" crap naruto was getting and still kept watching and now it seems I just wasted my time.
Only one reason I see why Naruto is soo popular is because Naruto is a emo kid like most American kids… and 'zomg teh karatae kid'.
But IMO, Naruto or Bleach or any of the current mangas arn't even comparable to OP, OP is out of their league and nearly as good (or better) as DB.
cosign, I don't think Naruto can no longer even be said as on the same level as One Piece, Bleach still has a chance (maybe), but I would say that One Piece and DB are on the same level!
Two of the best mangas of all time!
This is somewhat of a treaded topic but basically OP only seems less popular because of everything going against it: an anime not even on TV anymore in the US, Viz obsession with its own properties, nothing out there compared to merchandise, etc. But of course we know differently: the series is one of the biggest in Japan today, known around the world, one of the most pirated on the internet…heck, I know Greg said that OP will never be legendary like DB but I say give it time. In my head, OP could possibly be a legendary manga in Jump, the one that could become a standard for a new generation that hasn't even created manga yet just like DB and others are the standards for this generation...heck, I don't even know if DB was realized as that significant even by the Japanese until recently with what I've heard. (compared to something like Hokuto no Ken or JoJo)
GOOD POST
If you'll allow me a few comments.
In my head, OP could possibly be a legendary manga in Jump, the one that could become a standard for a new generation that hasn't even created manga yet just like DB and others are the standards for this generation
I don't think there's a doubt in my mind that it certainly deserves to be. OP took the spirit of what was DB and instead of simply putting it on steroids, it completely changed the game.
However, and this is partially a result of the age we live in, as DB more or less inspired the new generation of mangaka now running popular series, there are simply too many to choose from. When DB was around, there was simply, DB. Sure there were other shonen action/adventure series that were popular, but no other series can claim to have LITERALLY helped the Japanese economy like DB did. With DB's spawn appearing on the pages of magazines everywhere these days, I don't think it's possible to ever go back to that status of the one.
I mean Christ, this is a OP BBS and we can's even all agree that OP is the best currently running shonen action adventure comic.
heck, I don't even know if DB was realized as that significant even by the Japanese until recently with what I've heard.
This is an excellent point. Yes, one should question whether or not the Japanese knew how important DB was or if they even saw it that way or not. Readers of my old site might recall my impressions on my first trip to Japan. DB was almost scarce in 2001. A few Chinese knock-offs in some second-hand stores, some old Famicom games on shelves and a few animation cells here and there. Now again in 2008, one can't turn a street corner without seeing a Super Saiyan on some shit. So what happened? Was it the anniversary? The boom abroad? What really brought DB back?
I think it, and the Japanese people, needed a break. 2001 was just 4 years (technically less even if you check the air dates which I used to know by heart) after GT came to a close and I think after being literally blown over by DB merchandising for 13-14 years they needed to take a break and lay off it for a while. And here we are, round 2. So I DO think DB is really as important as it is made out to be, even though they don't realize it. I mean folks, here we have a series that still selling games and becoming a movie and on everything from underpants to floatation devices AND IT HASN'T HAD A NEW EPISODE IN OVER 10 YEARS.
Now I tried to think of a good analogy. DB, by itself, is the equivalent of a studio, nay, entertainment mega-company Warner Bros. and their cartoons. Okay? Everyone self-respecting American that can form complete sentences in English can quote, "Nyaa, What's up Doc'?", and knows instantly what it's from. That's Warner-fucking-Bros.
That's what DB is to Japan. It's an instituition. Even Mickey-fucking-Mouse can't claim to have a catch-phrase THAT recognizable. WB cartoons inspired basically every animated follies we have today in the US to some degree. Now when you look back at the originals, some are still brilliant, but a lot of them are so-so at best and some are downright terrible. But much of what they've inspired and brought us has managed to surpass their levels and yet….the classic WB cartoons remain timeless and some damn near-perfect.
NOW CURRENTLY, much of the progress we've seen made has gone backwards due to lack of commercial interest, profit, special interest groups that take offense at meaningless bullcrap etc. etc. That's not the point, the point is that like DB, the instituition of WB cartoons hasn't dulled and it's hard to find something singularly more memorable than them these days simply by virtue of the selection and variety that it helped create.
Thus is DB.
OP rox.
And besides, since when has popularity been an accurate gauge of relevance, worth or longevity?
A quick glance though music magazine back-issues provides plenty of embarrassing instances of the opposite:
At one point in time, Peter Frampton sold more albums than Fleetwood Mac.
At another point in time, Luther Vandross lost a Grammy Award to Sheena Easton.
Then there was the time when Cindi Lauper sold more albums than Madonna.
And does anyone remember these two words: Milli Vanilli.
I've been on this planet just long enough to realize that second- or third- best is actually a better place to be than "first". Don't get me wrong – if OP makes it to the top, I'll be out there sipping champagne with the rest of you -- but for now, I'm glad we're a smaller, tighter community, and that OP fans are actually fans of the manga, not just people who gravitate to what the charts say is "Hot" this week.

This takes the cake.
And
I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE (avatar)
Um… 4Kids One Piece was on US Toonami BEFORE Naruto, guys... >_>
And does anyone remember these two words: Milli Vanilli.
Funny thing about those guys was I didn't know who they were until the "Super Mario Brothers show" aired in the UK - by then their fakery was discovered. The whole episode went on air - without "their" music being played once in the whole episode.
What a way to end a music career though. Glad I wasn't one of the many who made them populaur.
Lets hope it doesn't come out as something like "Oda didn't write his own series" now Milli Vanilli have been mentioned.
But why? I'm wtching Naruto myself but compared to OP the characters are boring and the story is messed up with Uchiha shit.
Why can't everyone be a true Anime fan and watch all three? The Lord knows I do.
Because if you like One Piece, Bleach and Naruto are crap in comparison.
I like One Piece, Bleach and Naruto are not crap in comparison. They are just behind One Piece [ Only because One Piece has the better range of characters/better fighting and more mystery to it].

But when it all comes down to it all three have anime adaptations that unlike wine don't better with age.
@Sandai:
But when it all comes down to it all three have anime adaptations that unlike wine don't better with age.
What? Are you saying the anime is weak for these three series?
I think the animation in Bleach has improved. OP and Nar tend to have ups and downs.
As for the reason I think most people follow and prefer Naruto over OP is Sasuke. No one I know really follows Naruto because of Naruto or the story, they follow it because of the Uchihas and all Sharingan-like devices in the show.
I guess the only kind of similar character in One Piece is Zoro.. but he's not emo, in fact it's a little difficult to relate to him since he does tend to lack many human characteristics (like Superman), that isn't to say he isn't the biggest badass ever (and would be played by S.L.J. in a live action) but as much as I like watching Superman fight Doomsday, I prefer to read kick-ass.
naruto part I anime - pretty good
Shitpuddin - stop watching after episode 4, when it first started. So idk
bleach anime - very good but gay fillers
One Piece anime - Very good until Ennies. Then it went between ok, good, and very good. Some eps are way better than others, its too up and down since its close to the anime. Animation quality can be excellent or shitty or just ok/ good any week…though most of the time you can predict
my shitty 2 cents
What? Are you saying the anime is weak for these three series?
Nail on the head.
Though to clarify they don't start out like that.
i watch one piece bleach naruto
as well as d.gray-man
find watching anime can make something in the manga that wasn't very clear quite clear
yes animes have ups and downs but that to me is only when fillers happen
one piece i find best out of the 3 but i don't put the others down too much
naruto went through a bad spell with the itachi sasuke stuff but its getting better
one piece seems less popular anime wise outside japan but personally i find it great
i find ther other animes i've mention good as well all different in their own ways n while one gets a bit boring i got the others to interest me
For animes… the only one I really still follow in terms of subs is the OP anime. Although I'm starting watch it less since I'm annoyed with what they're doing with TB.
I enjoy the Beach anime. I am finally checking out the Bount arc (english dub) just to see what it's like... it's okay.
As for the Naruto anime, I stopped watching after part 1 ended.
@Sandai:
Nail on the head.
My God, I will take the anime over manga seven days a week, twice on Sunday.
I like both the Anime and Manga.
GASP!
the first time i watch OP on tv 8 years ago[Indonesian dub version]…my impression is...whats with this weird anime???...i didn't watch it again after episode 5....maybe my case is the same on another country...
the 2nd time...a year ago i've got manga series from ch1 to ch400...it really realize me that how good the manga is...from that now i have all anime+manga episode....even my college friends talk to me that i'm not a kid anymore...
i dont care if my friends make fun of me because of that...i dont care if it is less popular than Naruto and Bleach....[note: i've read and watch both before OP]….but yes I'M OP FAN!!!...
The most I concern is..I hope oda-sensei is not dead before OP ended....Thats my wish

I have the luck that a few of my best friends are watching OP too. But I know what you mean. Even my girlfriend She always compare us to Nami and Sanji with the difference that we are a couple
And god bless Oda so don't worry he will end this epic story.
In Japan One Piece is the most popular manga/anime of all time, in America is surppassed by Naruto… here the people is very stupid.
Remember the crapass dubbing that Naruto had before episode 26 or 27? Two words "BELIEVE IT" The dubbing was ALMOST as bad as 4kids.
Dude, not even Dragonball was anywhere near 4Kids-level, and if you're gonna bring up "Believe it!", then here's my reply: "Dattebayo!". Apparently the japanese fans hate that phrase just as much as the american fans hated "Believe it!". And let's look at everything else the Naruto-dub has always had: Little to no censoring, accurate translations, the original music-score intact, voices that fit the characters and for the most part sound like their japanese counterparts. That = Good dubbing. Naruto's dub has ALWAYS been better than the edited FUNi-dub of One Piece, though the uncut One Piece-dub beats it.

Third best selling series in the history of Weekly Shonen Jump = most popular manga/anime of all time? Sorry, but that doesn't quite add up.

Someone give this man James Brown's cape.

So because more people outside of Japan like a series about a loud mouth, blonde haired, blues eyes ninja attempting to become leader of his village than a series about a dimwitted, tough guy pirate trying to find the hidden treasure of the world's greatest pirate that makes them stupid? fanboys never cease to amaze me.

naruto's storyline seems like the author is making up shit as he goes.
One piece seems like it was thought out carefully since the beginning.
Zoro's character isn't the reason why i started to watch/read the anime it was because of the pirate theme. Pirates > Ninjas
I will be happy as long as One Piece Manga continues meaning if number of people who read the manga is high enough for oda to continue to write the story then I am happy.
As for its popularity in the America I really dont care
Even at that rate, you'll be so drowned in Toei filler scenes that the manga will be finished by the time you figure out what Sentoumaru looks like.
That's fine, I am busy enough to let it pass.
TOEI has done a good job handling filler material though it isn't bad like Bleach and Naruto fillers.

I agree, did you enjoy the icehunters? I thought it was fantastic.
I also am with you in being a fan of all 3, people make naruto and bleach out like they're the worst mangas ever released. Honestly, the competition probably even keeps Oda going. Not to mention Dragon Ball owns all 3 of them.

I've talked to some narutards about why they don't like one piece and they say it was boring. So i asked them which episode they watched and they just give me blank stares.
If One Piece is boring, than naruto should be boring too. The only real difference is that one piece has pirates and more main characters. There are other things too of course but those are the core differences.
But I don't know if I'd like it if One Piece was number 1 in america. Just as Narutards annoy the hell out of everyone, so too would one piece freaks. And its fun rambling about stuff no one has any idea what you're talking about. ^^

lol… the same happened to me dude!! those RETARDS!! gay ninja beasts fantasy lovers!!
in these last 11 months while living in Tokyo, i guess i can say that One Piece has the most fans in Japan.
as for any Japanese person i met, which she or he have an interest in old school manga (hokuto no ken, dragon ball, Dr.slump, bastard...etc.) they must at least know One Piece if they are not big fans!! as for Naruto i met only one guy who is a fan of Naruto but he didn't watch or read One Piece because he said it is too long to catch up with!! and there are 2 girls that i met, they liked Naruto (and i guess they liked it because it is a love story about 2 gay ninjas)
plus another proof that One Piece more famous than Naruto and Bleach that the comics calendars for a few jump titles are now up for pre-orders and one piece's calendar price is higher than all of the other titles (in your face!!)
But I don't know if I'd like it if One Piece was number 1 in america. Just as Narutards annoy the hell out of everyone, so too would one piece freaks. And its fun rambling about stuff no one has any idea what you're talking about. ^^
I agree with that, naruto fan boys and especially fan girls are the most annoying people ever.
But I don't know if I'd like it if One Piece was number 1 in america. Just as Narutards annoy the hell out of everyone, so too would one piece freaks.
It's not like they don't already do that.
"I want One Piece back on Toonami it' was the only good thing worth watching but no they're giving all their undivided attention to Naruto even though it SUXXORZ".
"Toonami used to be great but since most of their lineup now consists of Naruto and no Fun Piece it sucks".
"I don't see why CN had to cancel OP instead of scaling Naruto back to one episode a week instead of Two".
"(Alternate) I don't see why CN has One Piece airing at 10:30 when they can just give One Piece one of Naruto's hour timeslots".
"One Piece is doing well in DVD's but it needs a TV spot to be successful".
(moving on to the series in general)
"I don't see why everyone likes Naruto & Bleach more than One Piece those shows are cold diarrhea in a dixie cup while One Piece is hot shit in champagne glass".
"One Piece is the best manga out there Oda's a genius, Kishimoto's dunce."
Naruto used to be good but it's now crap whereas One Piece has always been great.
The second half of the above post is true.
@Sandai:
- Naruto used to be good but it's now crap whereas One Piece has always been great.
This isn't too far from the truth, though. I'd say One Piece had a slow start and quickly got better, whereas Naruto started out well, but ever since volume 27/episode 135, it's been getting consistently worse… I'd rather think that it ENDED at episode 135, actually.
And note that I'm not one of those "One Piece rocks and everything else sucks"-fans. I like plenty of other shows too, but One Piece and Dragonball are the only Shonen Jump-titles in my top 10-list, and I also think D.Gray-man easily beats both Bleach and Naruto.
@Vegard:
Third best selling series in the history of Weekly Shonen Jump = most popular manga/anime of all time? Sorry, but that doesn't quite add up.
Second best selling manga in Japan of all of time (and it's gaining on Dragonball in manga sales also) and one of the most highly rated anime (granted it's ratings aren't really up to par with the highest.)
And given Japan's manga market relative to other countries in the world, it does count for a lot. And while One Piece is only moderately successful in the U.S. (it sells, but hardly amongst the most popular) it does very well in other countries with large manga markets.
And there's actually a page in 10th Treasures addressing this I think:
http://i37.tinypic.com/2rfatxt.jpg
http://i38.tinypic.com/2vsqedx.jpg
http://i37.tinypic.com/2hojw43.jpg
Though that might not say anything. But the 10th Treasures should probably answer the question of "How popular is One Piece?" as it seems to be partially about OP's success.
Well, probably to see One Piece beat Naruto all around the world we just need to wait till the gay/annoying/boring(and horribly made) post-timeskip Naruto anime(Naruto:Shippuuden) starts airing outside Japan, while in the meantime One Piece airs its Water-7 and Enies Lobby arcs.
@Vegard:
and I also think D.Gray-man easily beats both Bleach and Naruto.
So true! How come no one ever brings up D. gray man? It's just as cool as "the big 3" oh right…cuz its not on tv...:(
So true! How come no one ever brings up D. gray man? It's just as cool as "the big 3" oh right…cuz its not on tv...:(
Or because not many people have heard of it.
Not to mention Dragon Ball owns all 3 of them.
I couldn't agree more! Dragonball RULES (to me anyway)!!!!
