every time i look around, i keep getting divergent opinions about the popularity of one piece. some sites said that one piece was the most favorite while others said it was in the top 100s. others say its way behind naruto or not in the top 10s but in 20s. just in your opinion, how popular do you think one piece is in japan and the world?
How popular is one piece?

One Piece is more popular than Naruto in Japan. Elsewhere… Not as popular, but still fair. I couldn't be more specific.
-
Well, on Onemanga it's the 3rd most popular behind Naruto and Bleach ._.
-
For some reason in America people seem to love boring mangas with ninjas (lol, a joke people, with some truth behind it!), back to the subject on hand, One Piece was recently stated for being the most downloaded show on the entire web, so I guess you can say it's pretty popular!

But it's also got a huge number of episodes. That alone gives it an advantage, of having to download more episodes per person, which inflates the number of downloads pretty drastically..

tru..tru, but still, thats a big accomplishment for One Piece, I mean we're talking about the whole web, thats alot, I myself didnt think it was that popular!

"With over 140 million copies sold, One Piece is the third highest selling manga in the history of Weekly Shōnen Jump. It is considered their most acclaimed and all-time third-best-selling title in Japan…. The manga is the first to increase the sales of Weekly Shōnen Jump in eleven years." One Piece is one of the most popular manga series in Japan. It's immense over there.
In America? Highly underrated. Damn kiddies…

OP is great from a critical perspective, but Jump has come out with legends that have influenced Japanese visual culture as a whole. OP is merely the current king in a long and prestigious lineage of manga - I wouldn't put it on the same footing as say Mazinger Z, DB, HnK, Jojo, Slam Dunk etc.
As for my view on OP's popularity, OP is more popular with college aged kids who can appreciate the level of maturity in the title. Sure, OP is intended for children but Oda still pours a lot of emotion into his writing; it's not like adults are shielded from ideas like "friendship" just because they're more worldly.
They can also appreciate that it's different from other manga; it's not bold or innovative, but it's not afraid to experiment or come up with wacky ideas or concepts. It's a liberating kind of guilty pleasure; even well-read manga fans can agree with this.
As a whole, it's not popular in America and the R1 region in general (Canada, US) but is fairly popular elsewhere, and is #1 for Japan's manga. Some of this popularity is because people read OP because it's said to be #1, but it likely has more true fans even then than its Jump siblings.
Personal opinion: OP's popularity now is fine, it doesn't need a fanbase as large as Naruto or Bleach. If part of the enjoyment of the title is the community, and a community like AP can still be large and good, we don't need it to get so large that it is out of hand.
-
everytime we talk about popularity, it will turn into a naruto vs OP. imo ppl who prefer naruto doesnt read OP. While ppl who prefer OP happen to read both and give a fairer accessment therefore its more credible. fact.
-
^ lol try saying that in a naruto forum haha.
Though I agree immensely! A lot of friends i know prefer naruto simply because they wouldn't give one piece a chance. They give me answers like "the characters look too kiddy" and "i don't like the storyline (even though he's only watched the first 15 episodes!)" and stuff like that.
Naruto is advantaged with good introduction of its storyline and a vastly different concept: a more modern aged ninja against the characteristic highly disciplined trained assassin prevalent in other stories. But its story seems to be dying off somewhat (though it has started to pick up again, imo). One Piece doesn't give a very good first impression, but its story just keeps getting better and better. And even now it's one of the best, and it's still getting better. Kudos to One Piece!

All I know are those number of '06 when OP was still behind slam dunk.
http://www.comipress.com/article/2006/06/01/196
But OP's volume sales were top. By chapter 1000 it might actually hit #1 overall \o/ -
OP got voted the most moving manga not so long ago…
...And when they had a voting poll over two years ago (I recall run by tokyo TV but I it might be not the case) for the most populaur shows, OP was something like 34th most populaur show while Naruo was 36th. (they run these twice a year, but I only know the results for one of them). Its had several volumes become the quickest selling mangas as well. OP is more populaur in Japan, in fact its more populaur in many countries, then most other manga.
From my recalling of a Naruto fan, Naruto is due to finish well before OP. My own prediction is that Naruto will become gather dust quickly once its done with, I compare it to my own experience with Beyblade. Populaur as it was as a show, the series was dead within a year of ending. Naruto I think will take perhaps up to three years to fade away. In most cases once a series stop it just dies within a year (those with a minor fandom within 3 months). I've been alive long enough to know this. :-/
OP has been around for a while now, its as big, if not bigger then DB, whose fandom is as strong as it was the day the last chapter rolled out.
-
For me One Piece is the more amazing manga compared to Bleach and Naruto. Dunno why Naruto is more popular
-
Most of the fandom are youngish, say early teens, in Amercia. Most of OP's is late teens. The young teens lke to be impressed, while the older ones are less impressed by it all. As I said,I compare it to Beyblade. The auidence was mainl young teens as well. Also, the show had many "pretty boy" characters, which Naruto has and OP hasn't. In Japan and America, the fangirls are the ones who are more likely to write yaoi, yuri, etc, etc and write fan art and mangas. You win the fangirls, you win a lot of things.
edit:
Anyone intereasted, from my experience of Japanese fans;
-Fanboys are the ones likely to collect any model (except cute) esp. girls (esp. if cute) and the heroes. When they do fanart their more likely to draw hentai of the females and are responible for most fo the hentai. Overall they spend more money, but don't produce so much supplies for the fandom.
-Fangirls don't buy so much fanjunk, but are more likely to collect the cute junk the boys don't, also may collect the hero figures. Their more likely to do yaoi, and are more likely to speak it around. Hence why I said, if you win the fangirls you win a lot of things. As many girls an buy a manga as the boys in many cases if the manga has taken off amongst the girls. OIverall, they spend less money on the series, but are more likely to produce the fandom stuff linked to it.edit:
-Also fangirls cos-play more then fanboys in japan (more likely to hae the skills, as a great Janese business once said, there are things girls just aren' taugh in Japan, ut some things fanboys aren't either.) In an Otaku club, the boys will play video games… The girls will just cosplay. :-/
Another way of determining populaurity of a show is outside of Japan; You an judge the populaurity of show in America by how many thoughtless souls steal fanart...
(oh gosh, I shouldn't mention that bit about stealing fanart...)

One Piece is more popular in Japan then in the US. Why? One word: Zolo.

But OP's volume sales were top. By chapter 1000 it might actually hit #1 overall \o/Actually, it has already surpassed the sales of SD, and even Kochi Kame. It's currently the second best-selling manga of Jump with 140M [[URL="http://hochi.yomiuri.co.jp/entertainment/news/20080128-OHT1T00081.htm"]1] circulations just behind DB with 150M [[URL="http://adv.yomiuri.co.jp/ojo/02number/200509/09adf.html"]2].

Well it's the opposite. ZoRo is the most popular character in US. In japan Luffy is the most popular
-
One Piece is more popular in Japan then in the US. Why? One word: Zolo.
Yes, people in Japan see One Piece and think "oh, a character named Zoro? I'm going to read this!" And people in America look at it and say "Oh, a character named Zolo? I'm not going to read this" and it is entirely what they base their opinions on. You are right.
-
One Piece is more popular in Japan then in the US. Why? One word: Zolo.
I think that you guys are missing what hes trying to say. The success of a manga in america has a lot to do with the success of the anime (dub) that gose with it. A lot ( a whole lot) of americans are drawn to a manga because of the anime (dub) interpertion of the manga. Because of the reason one piece lost a huge oppertunity to get a stronger footing like naruto has in the us. 4 kids pertraied one piece to be super kiddy, and having lots of plot holes (by skiping arcs). A lot of people saw 4 kids dub and where turned away by that. Those same people saw naruto and where blow away by its serious tone. Had one piece been done by vis or funimation and aired on toonmi right after dbz it would be 100x bigger in the use then it is right now.
One pieces popularty is big right now even here in the us, but i think that it well sky rocket once funimation dose the water 7 arc and get it aired on tv.
-

QFT. It's all about the Naruto and Bleach here…:getlost:
Oh, and the 4Kids dub didn't help.
-
Neither did the bad marketing approach (A.K.A none whats so ever) to sell the series.

Ummm, you're agreeing with him.

I think this pretty much covers it. One Piece is only second to Dragonball, and unless you've lived under a rock you know Dragonball is probably thee most popular manga in Japan, and the whole world for the matter.
-
More people in the world WATCH anime and much less read manga. If you want your series to be popular in the world [Not just Japan where there are more active manga readers] make it a good anime. Not many people knew Dragonball Z was a manga first, many only seen the anime and that's what made it so popular in the entire world [Many say that the DBZ anime is even better than the manga Including myself] Naruto and Bleach anime is still strong overseas One Piece is not cause it just sucked.
-
"i don't like the storyline (even though he's only watched the first 15 episodes!)" and stuff like that.
If he's gone through that much OP isn't for him. You can't honestly expect someone who doesn't like something to stick with it for 100+ episodes just so you can have the peace of mind knowing its not in his nature to like OP.
Had one piece been done by vis or funimation and aired on toonmi right after dbz it would be 100x bigger in the use then it is right now.
Naw.
It's more like OP's popularity would be the same as it is now, only the explanations for why OP isn't popular would consist of bashing the Naruto and Bleach fandoms for poor taste.
-
I'll compare this to what happened to an Amercian show: "Legion of Superheroes".
Between season 1 and 2, things got hyped up to suit the eight year old age rating because someone thought it would be a good idea to run a poll on their opinion. The results: Less girls… More action. Storyline suffered a loss to compensate for this.
Why compare this? Because this is like compare Naruto to many shows. It starts off being something, but that something forces it down a street with no way out. Unfortuntely, it grabs the attention of younger audiences a lot more, because apparently the younger audiences are easy to sell. Hence Naruto's populaurity.
Things like storyline only sell to the older audiences easier then young, since we're more demanding and are not easily bought into cheap "Wow me please" shows. Okay not of all fans, judging by the way gamers buy games some people are disappointing in fact. Obivously, most cartoons are watched by young kids. Even anime on TV. If your show is easy to sell to the main target audience "bingo!".
I really can't fully explain this... Comparing the populaurity of one series to another is hard. Its like comparing Mortal Kombat with Street Fighter; one has a better storyline and more in-depth character building, the other does its job of selling itself better and produces a more appealing game.

Japan-Most popular
Else where- Good size popular.
Onemanga-Switches 1 23 almost all the time
America-Popular but no insanley popular. -

16 characters of agreement.

Yeah, One Piece focuses more on story, espicially the episodes of the FUNi dub airing on TV which may have explained why the restless children may have gotten bored. God knows I wouldn't want to be up a 10:30 watching a show during the school year.

The anime does suck. That's like two inches from fact.
-
The anime does suck. That's like two inches from fact.
inches look like miles when you say something that one sided. :/
-
But it does…:cwy:
The art is poor.
The scenes are too long.
It doesn't convey the feeling of the manga properly.
And the fights..(well actually I like the fights, except for Zoro v Ryuuma)All this adds up to the surprisingly mediocre One Piece anime.
-
Considering the series is adapting from the a weekly running Manga I'd say it is doing a fine job.

With most of the godawful filler and the hokey looking animation it's hard to get behind that.

Because people see Naruto as being more appealing than One Piece, I wish people would try to understand that.

Comparing sales is not exactly the best way to assess something. Especially in Japan. Japanese have a tendency to make a big shit over the 'fastest' or 'best' ANYTHING.
Examples:
"This is the biggest wooden Buddha in this region of Japan."
"In all of Japan this is the largest temple made from this kind of tree."
"This school had the fastest swimmers in Japan twenty two years ago."
"Japan's most delicious soba noodles made with this specific ingredient all come from this town."
They make a big deal over anything and everything because they have to in order to sell shit. Here again it's like:
"OP was voted most popular show on this network in the animated category."
"OP was voted most moving manga by readers of that particular magazine."
"OP sold most volumes within this given timeframe."
etc.
OP is very popular. Many if not most of the adults and young people today know about OP.
What OP is not, is a cultural icon. At least not yet. Dragonball is a cultural icon. Maybe it's even beyond that. DB is just something everyone knows. Sure, fans have negative things to say about certain parts, but for the most part, anyone watching television can understand EXACTLY what it is. It's not unusual to see it pop up….well...just about anywhere. It's not even, "Hey look! Something related to DB!", it just....is there.
Now when you look at these things that vote Slam Dunk or Nana or X series as being more popular or the author being more beloved or something, keep in mind, OFTEN (not always) these are surveys that provide answers from a VERY SPECIFIC group of individuals. Even if they break down sex and age groups, trust me, your average Taro or Hanako on the street won't even know that these surveys exist. You're gonna get the die-hards and in some cases the freaks responding to them so simply keep that in mind for a lot of these so-called 'claims to fame' that 'votes' tend to churn out.
OP is very popular, but it's no DB and at this rate, I don't think anything ever will be again.
"You've changed things. There's no going back."
-
One Piece is not cause it just sucked.
Too many 'amusement parks' for your taste?
@Yuugi's:
Yeah, One Piece focuses more on story, espicially the episodes of the FUNi dub airing on TV which may have explained why the restless children may have gotten bored.
Um, granted early Skypiea is kinda slow but Jaya really isn't that boring.
-
OP has always been my fav.
I used to like both Naruto and Bleach also, but their plots started disappointing.
Naruto was never about Naruto after the timeshift (it was all about the eyes and Sasuke ). and Bleach no longer has any balance (of power) between characters. Retarded power-ups and useless filler chapters ftl.
Like many of you said already, OP started slow but has become epic.
Doesn't OP manga sell like Naruto and Bleach combined in Japan? -
Aaah, the thin line between fact and opinion.
It's a fact; for the simple fact that One Piece isn't being shown on cartoon network.
The One Piece Anime [Japanese] is good.@The:
Too many 'amusement parks' for your taste?
Nah, I like the One Piece anime/manga…
-
@Sandai:
Even on the weekend?

But why? I'm wtching Naruto myself but compared to OP the characters are boring and the story is messed up with Uchiha shit.
-
This is somewhat of a treaded topic but basically OP only seems less popular because of everything going against it: an anime not even on TV anymore in the US, Viz obsession with its own properties, nothing out there compared to merchandise, etc. But of course we know differently: the series is one of the biggest in Japan today, known around the world, one of the most pirated on the internet…heck, I know Greg said that OP will never be legendary like DB but I say give it time. In my head, OP could possibly be a legendary manga in Jump, the one that could become a standard for a new generation that hasn't even created manga yet just like DB and others are the standards for this generation...heck, I don't even know if DB was realized as that significant even by the Japanese until recently with what I've heard. (compared to something like Hokuto no Ken or JoJo)
-
4kids killed it, but cartoon network could have fixed it with the funi version if they had started from episode 1. People who have never really watched one piece wouldn't wanna start in the middle of the series when i they have no idea what is going on.
And yeah, the series starts off slow but if you wait until there are more crewmembers, it gets hilarious! And its fun and dramatic and amazing. I think Americans are just too impatient. They want their action here and NOW!
-
I just DONT understand at all why Naruto is appealing. I watched a few episodes on Fox Kids [UK] and was just watching to see whats so interesting about it, I saw acouple of episodes but was bored to hell with all this "training" crap naruto was getting and still kept watching and now it seems I just wasted my time.
Only one reason I see why Naruto is soo popular is because Naruto is a emo kid like most American kids… and 'zomg teh karatae kid'.
But IMO, Naruto or Bleach or any of the current mangas arn't even comparable to OP, OP is out of their league and nearly as good (or better) as DB.
-
Naruto–the blonde kid--isn't the reason Naruto the series is so popular.
-
And Sasuke is just an pseudo vegeta… The Uchiha shit is overdone... That's the good sode of OP... The whole crew are important... in Naruto Sasuke is important... the rest are fodder... Even Naruto...
The whole cast is after Sasuke.
-
That's an insult to Vegeta. At least Vegeta was man enough to do what he wanted and the other's–really just Future Trunks and Gokû--knew/hoped he'd eventually turn around.
-
@Yuugi's:

Final Atonement was the best episode ever.
