Couldn't he have just demolished The Lord of the Coast and then rescued Luffy?
How come Shanks had to lose an arm?
-

plot…..
-
The REAL reason is because he had to swim from the coast to Luffy in under 1 second, practically super-sonic speeds, which left him with absolutely no time to avoid the bite.
-
Fuck yes Wolfpox
Also, OP (yes you, MagellanXMage or whatever it is), you seriously need to work on this reading thing
-
No, see, what really happened was that he was working with Davy Jones on a machine that could accelerate people to Raftel, and it worked… but it warped Shanks' arm 80 years in the future along with Davy Jones. Their lab was in the Seaking's mouth, so that's why Shanks was hanging out in Windmill Village. But with Davy Jones gone, Shanks had no reason to stick around.
-
I thought Shanks ought to be able to move fast enough to knock out the Lord of the Coast, he is a Yonkou right?

Uh what do you mean by reading thing?
-
Because he had two.
-
he is a Yonkou right?
Now, yes. I don't believe we know whether or not the Yonkou existed at the time.
-
he wanted to lose something for luffy after all, and he ran out of time bc of leaving with the crew soon.
so when luffy fell in the water, he thought "well, why not my arm 8D?"
there you go.but -
strong people get scarred too. how did jyabura get his scar in the face for example? maybe it was just an accident including Kaku, his sword and a banana-peel! who is with me? -
its a story it happens :P
im sure this arm stuff aint over yet there will be more to it later in the manga :D
-
He wasn't running away from it, he was protecting Luffy
And in doing so he lost his arm. Would you have preferred he had swam away and Luffy been killed?

Hey, Shanks is only human. We make mistakes, people die, etc etc etc.
The point is, the circumstances made it so that Shanks couldn't help but to lose one arm. Or he did it on purpose. Who knows.
-
Are we talking from a story point of view or are we disregarding the plot element that adds to Luffys character?
Even If Shanks is strong back then I don't think he can tear it apart with his bare hands while in the water. Besides he needed to keep Luffy above the surface as the little bugger would sink without help.
-
Shanks lost his arm because that's how Oda decided to happen. Also, I agree with what Admiral Wolfpox said:
@Admiral:The REAL reason is because he had to swim from the coast to Luffy in under 1 second, practically super-sonic speeds, which left him with absolutely no time to avoid the bite.
-
Also because Shanks thought that the Seaking deserve a snack and all he could offer it was his arm.
-
He needed to show Luffy the dangers of the sea. He knew Luffy could become a great pirate but if he left too early he would probably be killed.
He 'Bet it on the New Era' as he said.
Now everyone else, stfu b/c you're not gonna get a better (Serious) answer than this. -
He tried to reenact the Hisoka-Castro fight from the celestial tower arc of HunterXHunter from Hisoka's view. But he made a blooper.
-
Shanks did it simply for the pleasure of PEIN

@AWB:
Who says he permanently lost his arm? If he had devil fruit with him in Luffy's town, maybe he had more. He could have eaten the Regrowth-Regrowth Fruit (after he swam to rescue Luffy of course)

Maybe Shank's has a phantom arm <.<
-
Phantom Arm Syndrome maybe
-
How come he didn't bleed to death, losing an arm in the middle of nowhere?
He just wanted to show off how awesome he is.
-
How come he didn't bleed to death, losing an arm in the middle of nowhere?
The bite was so intense that it cauterized the wound?

I hear you're actually less likely to die of blood loss when you lose a limb than you are with a regular open wound. Not sure about that though.
As for why he did it:
He did it for the Hunt!
-
Because it happened! There doesn't always need to be a reason for something to happen, sometimes it just happens.
-
At least he didn't turned out all emo and pedo like this guy
!

Random Person, "!Fluffy-Samaaaaaaa"

He did it for the lulz.

Remember how devastated Luffy was once he found out he couldn't swim anymore?
According to what Shanks had said earlier to him:
"You're a good swimmer but still haven't got what it takes to become a pirate"
(Or something along those lines)
Luffy at that time probably considered being a good swimmer his greatest strength and advantage.
Shanks understood that Luffy felt like a cripple and probably wanted to show him that one can still have a weakness/be crippled and be a strong pirate. -
Because it happened! There doesn't always need to be a reason for something to happen, sometimes it just happens.
Yeah, I'm with this. He wasn't planning to lose it, he just had to give it up to save Luffy.
Shit happens.
-
@Impel:
Shit happens.
Not in One Piece is doesn't. It's all staged.
That's why Shanks shouldn't have lost his arm.
Hence your argument is null

Shanks understood that Luffy felt like a cripple and probably wanted to show him that one can still have a weakness/be crippled and be a strong pirate.Firstly, that was a mistake in the 4Kids dub. Luffy couldn't swim even before he ate the Gum Gum Fruit, according to the manga and Japanese anime. 4Kids changed the line to him saying that he COULD swim. Besides, Luffy didn't mind that he'd never be able to swim, he just figured he'd have to be "the pirate that never falls overboard". And secondly, I doubt anybody would give up their arm just to prove a point like that. And thirdly, Admiral Wolfpox @Admiral:
The REAL reason is because he had to swim from the coast to Luffy in under 1 second, practically super-sonic speeds, which left him with absolutely no time to avoid the bite.
is still right. That's the simplest, most logical explanation.
-
He can use his sword though.
The best answer is he did it for the lulz. -
oda never thought that far?

wow. Really? some one really asked that question?

I've been rereading the One Piece manga and I've concluded that it was to show that Shanks was a force to be reckoned with. Think about it, he's still a major threat to the government despite a handicap. That's how powerful he is. It's one of those "makes you look more badass" things.
And I take back my Regrowth Fruit theory. deletes post

@AWB:
my Regrowth Fruit theory:
Who says he permanently lost his arm? If he had devil fruit with him in Luffy's town, maybe he had more. He could have eaten the Regrowth-Regrowth Fruit (after he swam to rescue Luffy of course)
Be glad that the future generations will learn from your mistakes
-
speaking of regrowth fruit. What happens if Robin where to loose an Arm like Shanks.
Would she be able to grow it back, or would she only be able to grow an arm like she currently has left. Like if she lost her left arm, she would only be able to grow hane/hane right arms?
And the arm growing back, would Robin have to consciously be recreating her arm. If she was knocked out or sleeping she would then not have her arm.
-
That's actually the whole point about the weakness of Robin's fruit
-

Story: Big Shark-eel monster swims over to chomp Luffy. Shanks swims miraculously fast to save Luffy. Shanks puts his arm out to push away big monster. Big monster chomps arm instead.
The question is why didn't Shanks do something as macho as punch out the monster. That's because he has to save Luffy first. Sure he could try punching the monster first before it reached Luffy, but 1. the monster had already reached Luffy, 2. Luffy might have been hit accidentally, 3. Luffy was sinking and drowning.
How about doing the aura thing? Sorry, it can't happen instantly. If you think about it, the aura crush move needs the user to make a connection with its victim. Once the connection is established, the psychic effect proceeds to occur. Shanks was able to do it subconsciously on Whitebeard's ship, but that was 10 years after saving Luffy. He's gotten strong enough to do that, despite only having 1 arm.
