I am really liking this episode. Ryuuma at the end gave me chills.

Hm, to be honest, "Bodyguard´s" voice is not that much of a bother. Ok, his laugh is definitely the same tone as Brook´s but the rest is a tad different. Actually, if the laugh would have the same tone as the rest then it wouldn´t be a bother at all, even though I imagined the voice much deeper. I guess I have to wait and see how well he works in all the scenes where he doesn´t laugh.

That can't be right. During Hogback's flashback, Perona was with Moria and Absalom when Hogback first met them ten years before.
-
Lob, can you show us any references to when Oda told of their ages?

ehh.. just messing with you :E
But I do recall him saying Abs and Hogbacks ages somewhere..
-
Good. You just saved me years of therapy.

-
Too late for AWB now. XD
-
They're not human technically now..so wouldn't that make them forever their ages since actual living has ceased?
-
The people we're talking about aren't zombies, CM.
-
Yeah, the mysterious four are all human
! well, at least Hogback, Perona and Absalom. Who knows what Moria is.
Anyways, I watched the episode and liked it. Although my enjoyment is overshadowed by the fact that
! the next episode we'll get the introductions for the mysterious four including first mention of Moria, see him and hear him speak at the end. Can't wait!
Sanji insulting Franky of being robot and a pervert was very funny.
Many people talked about being disappointed with the fact that Ryuuma had almost a similar voice to Brook. I too expected a bit more serious voice along with the Yohohos, but who knows, we might still get it.
-
Greg, I noticed you spelled it "Odr" when before you spelled it "Odz". Which one is right? XD

Well first, there is no 'right' until Oda says otherwise.
I have mentioned this before but Odr is the correct translation. It's what the character's name is. And in what I consider canon discussion, I will use his correct name, albeit missing the original correct characters because I don't feel the need to be THAT anal.
Odz is simply name that gets the pronounciation across and includes the root as well. It's easier to read/pronounce than Odr.

I don't understand. How does オーズ become Odr? What happened to the ズ?
And where did you learn what the correct translation is?

I have no idea.
16 ?s

16 ?s
….........What?

I thought I knew, but I didn't cause I read something wrong, so I edited my post.
Lets just wait for a romanization that will appear one day so we don't have crap like Eneru/Enel/Ener.

Ok, but what does "16 ?s" mean?
-
-_-
We need to have 16 characters in a post. So if someone is short, they usually type 16 ___s.Back to topic.
-

The elongated o & zu are mimicking the 'th' and soft 'r' sound of his name as it is pronounced in the original Óðr . The sound of a 'th' isn't easily replicated in Japanese nor is it easy for many Japanese individuals to pronounce such a spelling. It's usually rendered in Japanese through a series of the 'sa' series of syllables.
And where did you learn what the correct translation is?
I've known the 'correct' translation since day 1. I think we've always agreed that Odr is the American English equivalent of his name. It just hasn't been used because of the difficulty of pronounciation. I myself prefer Odz since it's pronounced exactly the same in Japanese as in English and includes a hint at the root of the word.
But in a strictly canon conversation, his name is Odr because….well....it's his name ^_^;

@Seal:
Man, the anime is going at a nice pace. It doesn't seem like it's one chapter = one episode, thats for sure. And if it is, then maybe I'm just ignorant. XD
No, it seems to be a mixture of several chapter pieces…
IIRC everything is fine until the 600 million berry jackpot (ch.448) - then Ryuma appears (ch. 449)... The mentioning of Moria as a shichibukkai is held back for the next episode.
Warning: This file is a whopping 572 MB. The guy who uploads the RAW each week loves making the file extremely large, and on top of that, for whatever reason, he encodes it in mp4 format so it's nearly impossible to decrease the file size.
It is possible - H.264 doesn't mean "small size" by default. You can have really crappy settings that increase the size of such a video file, so it would be better to use XviD with Highdef setup with a rather low quantizing setting. So I can only guess that this file is meant for those guys with a PS3…
But I prefer the avi RAWs with MS-WMV9-Codec anyways - because there were recently to large H264 raws in HD resolution with significant block artifacts an brightness problems (and the mp4 container sucks). Nothing in sight here?
-
So if the pronunciation cant be mimicked in English or Japanese, what language does it come from?

I know it can be decreased. I've found a few programs that do it. But they all encode it in such a way that the quality is awful. Same with programs that convert mp4 to avi.
My computer has trouble playing those enormous mp4 files…It winds up skipping frames, so the animation movement isn't as smooth.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%93%C3%B0r
And the pronounciation can be mimicked. The fact is that it is a mimic. All humans can make the same sounds, it's merely a matter of practice. But having the correct characters for a sound in another language is a different issue.
-
Hey Greg, how do you pronounce Óðr? Like Oder?
-
I explained it briefly above but the best and most accurate description was given by (I BELIEVE) Monkey Spirit in an old Odz thread. Probably the one where the title is like "On the O Name" or something like that. It's worth searching out.

I saw the post above but I'm still not quite sure how to pronouce the name. Oder? Other? A combination of the 2? Also I searched for a thread under that name(Using the search feature) but it came up with nothing.

I hear it now. Pronouncing it out loud, that is.
Interesting.

Well, it makes sense that "bodyguard" has the same voice as Brook's. In the manga chapter where he's introduced, Nami, Chopper, and Usopp think it's Brook that's approaching them, same as the anime episode. And the best way to convey that two people are alike (in the dark) is by having them sound the same.

But they only made that initial connection from his very distinctive laugh, there wasn't really anything in manga I can recall to indicate they had similar voices.

yeah but nami, usopp and chopper are actually smart characters, i don't think they'd fall for just some similar mimick. sure that's not explained by oda, but i still think the voices are meant to be kinda similar.
note that i don't like his voice either.
-

Dunno, I think he would've indicated something like that, if that's how he intended it be, seeing as it impacts on numerous characters. This seems like a Toei thing.
-
! So apparently Luffy's voice will be used for Odr?
I'm kind of iffy on that but it might be interesting in the end. -
Compared to some of the voices we're going to hear later, I don't think the samurai zombie was as bad as it could be. His first appearance depicted a sense of sinister up to the first set of "Yohohohoho"…then by the second, he became "the Brook clone". The VA just needs to more modulate when in the zombie so he doesn't sound like the skeleton man.

One Piece Ep. 342 HD raw ~377MB
I know that there are already HD fansubs - but this is the WM9 HD raw within an avi container that is also used by Vegapunk (though this is marked as one from the Thriller Back Team)
seems to be the same (but renamed) file.
So for the ones that have problems with the MP4/H.264+AAC one and if you want to test another HD raw before giving it up… ;)

Okay, this isn't a new problem for the anime, but I felt that it was especially apparent in this episode. Camera work. We have giant, painted backdrops, with tiny characters drawn in. It looks empty. Far too empty. They should have zoomed in.
As for Ryuuma, Brook's voice works up to a point. If this is the angle they're approaching him from, Brook's seiyuu should just use his 'serious' voice. The 'Yohoho' was okay until it leapt up several octaves. Hopefully he'll get more serious later on… Though, as I said eariler, a grim samurai deadpanning Brook's jokes is how it should have been.
As for the art, I'm 100% positive that it's the art director who does the openings, though this isn't his best work. Lots of oddly drawn facial lines. For an anime that almost always gets into the top ten each week in Japan, is it too much to ask for a constant stream of Sea Train quality artwork?
-
Though, as I said eariler, a grim samurai deadpanning Brook's jokes is how it should have been.
Why is that? Besides the Yohohoho (and praising Nami once), Ryuma doesn't have too much of Brook's traits. He was always much more serious, in fact i can't remember a single joke coming from him. I think giving him a different VA would just ruin the joke completely, since he wouldn't be nothing like Brook anymore.
As i said before this episode, i always pictured the zombies with the same VA's from the shadows owners slightly altering their voices, and i seriously doubt Oda wasn't consulted about this.
-
Anyone else think the timing on the Luffy's 'zombie return' sucked balls?
Totally. This made me laugh out loud when I read it. Then I saw it animated and got really excited, and then I felt let down.
^ That was about watching a video. Not sex.
Just to clear that up.
The pacing is REALLY killing this arc.
-

Why should he put in one of his skull jokes if he isn´t a skeleton to begin with? And…
! …his can I see your pants thing is definitely one of Brooks personality traits that´s different from the Yohohoho. The other trait is his fighting style that of course has no connection to the voice. So yep, he´s pretty much like Brook or should I say like Brook would be under there circumstances.
-
while i can relate to brook and ryuma being somewhat popular characters here leading to the disappointment about ryuma´s VA taking the upper hand, it will turn out to be hilarious once odz, jigoroh and dogpen are revealed. using the same VAs seems to fit the "funny" zombies alot more than the "serious" ones like ryuma.
-
as long as the VA's step up and make their voices different I won't mind
-
No one else thinks Ryuuma's Yohohoho is extremely malicious-sounding?
I LOVE IT.
I can't wait to hear the rest of the shadow-inserted characters. :D
-
@Yan:

I rewatched it and will admit that it is a tiny bit more evil sounding than the regular, jolly Yohohohoho. I guess I can count that as a pro towards the situation. :3
-
If the zombies have the same VAs as their shadow counterparts, then that means that Odz….
This is going to be fucking hilarious!
