So does Gear2 actually shortens the life span of Luffy? I always tought it was more like Luffy dying in the fight if he overused the gear2 due to the accelerated consumption of proteins. Luffy was already about to die after fight with Lucci, and it seems Chopper and Company were more worried about the Gears screwing up Luffy's body at that moment than worrying about what would happen to his life span.
Chapter 482 "Morning Comes" Discussion
-
-
I´d say that the one doesn´t negate the other. Shortening the life span by a long shot, doesn´t mean that it doesn´t consume a huge amount of energy here and now. After he defeated Blueno Luffy already said that and ate his meat because of it. And there´s no doubt that his Gear 2nd consumed far more energy against Rucchi.
-
Another shichibukai. Is it safe to say that Luffy will go up to 400,000,000 or 500,000,000 because of this?
-
So I woke up at sunrise to go get the issue to get myself 'in the mood'.

-
But has anyone asked Oda that in the SBS? I think that what Lucci meant with the stuff of Luffy shortening his life span if he kept abusing of Gear2 was more like Luffy dying in the middle of a battle rather than the technique having shortening effects on his overall life span.
And yeah, Gear2 surely consumed everything left on Luffy after it was combined with Gear3….
-
@Dr.:

That depends on alot of things. Only person that has a chance of telling about what happened at Thriller bark is Kuma, and we don't even know if he's still there or already left.
If Luffy's bounty does end up being raised, they'd have to admit that Luffy took out a Shichibukai. It can't be like Alabasta where they gave the credit to Smoker since there's no one in Thriller Bark who could take the credit. Kuma will likely end up telling them what happened, but I doubt the World Government will raise Luffy's bounty. If they admit this to the public it'll make them look incompetent. Considering they know what really happened with Crocodile, seeing some pirate taking out 2 of the 7 Shichibukai is bad. Especially since they just restored balance in recruiting Blackbeard.

But didn't Moria told Kuma to just watch as he crushed down the Strawhats? And about the bounty thing, they could always say that Moria was about to betray them or something like that. It's not like they can't capture Dr.Hogback and force him to tell lies about the purposes of the zombies at Thriller Bark.
It wouldn't make them incompetent if this time they say they stopped a schichibukai before something like the Crocodile's incident happened.

That was just my explanation on why the Government wouldn't admit to it, hence no bounty increase. You're right though, they could just change the story and make Kuma the one who took him down.
The problem I see with that is they'd have to take away Moria's title as Shichibukai. That's just something they won't do since they hold a great deal of importance on maintaining balance. I'd think the Government wouldn't want to lose another Shichibukai so soon after getting the balance back when they recruited Blackbeard, as I stated in my last post.
Honestly though, what I think is simply everything that happened in Thriller Bark will never see the light of day. Considering when Kuma spoke with Moria, he stated that "everywhere news has spread about Crocodile's replacement but here." So I really doubt any news of what happened in Thriller Bark will be mentioned to the public. This isn't like with Crocodile where it happened in public, all of it can be easily kept secret because of the location. So no bounty increase and Moria will still keep his Shichibukai status, so the balance will be kept.
-
They can just raise his bounty without giving a reason, who do they have to answer too?
-
Anyone consider that luffy's bounty may stay at 300mil and every other crew member's bounty will double? Especially since Moria made a comment to luffy about losing his crew. Except for the nightmare luffy and moria finish off chapters, most of the enemies were handled by the crew in this arc. Luffy is already conisdered dangerous with a 300 mil bounty. His crew though look to have been alittle underestimated.
-
Just on the basis of plot, I'm gonna assume that there will be no bounty increases. We just had one where everyone got one and a huge deal was made out of it. It seems too soon to have a bounty increase.
I also think that Moria will still have his power, due to the balance. Unless, they find Tobi somewhere…
-
For everyone who has said it so far, I don't think the WG fears raising a pirates bounty for any reason, such as suspicion. The SHs got a raise with the defeat or Crocodile and the destruction of Enies Lobby, both incidents that got covered up.
I don't think the raising of a pirates bounty is going to raise any suspicion. People constantly say "this guy must have done something really nasty" etc when presented with a high bounty pirate, but never ask the cause. So, there's no reason for the SHs to not get a bounty raise for this event. The WG will cover everything up and give the SHs bigger bounties hoping that someone will want to turn them in.
Although, for everyone who says "it's too soon," it's possible that their bounties won't be revealed for a long time while something else in the story happens.
-
I think that WG can't keep this thing unknown because now all of the people that lost their shadows have them back and can go back to do whatever they want to do and may tell everyone else about this whole Thriller Bark incident.
And I agree what onemoment said. WG doesn't need to tell the reason for raising their bounties.
And I also think that Moria may very well be a Shichibukai even after this incident. I can't think of any good enough reasons to think otherwise.
-
Anyways, the world must be bussy right now with the news of a Schichibukai defeating one of the commanders of one of Whitebeard's divisions to even give a damn about what happens to someone so mysterious like Moria.
Really, there are like many options for Oda, but the ones that I think it would kinda made sense if:
1.-Luffy's bounty gets increased because of something like him trying to lend Moria his powers, but then they could say that Kuma stopped them before Moria and Luffy could unleash the power of the army of zombies made by Hogback. Just notice how Ace's defeat was brought up during this arc, and also the thing of Kuma's enigmatic line about Blackbeard and the balance, so perhaps they could strip Moria of his title without caring a lot about the balance because of Ace's defeat at the hands of Blackbeard. Kuma also said that Blackbeard gained the title trough power, so perhaps the WG ackowledges him as a force that could surpass both Crocodile and Moria.
2.-Everything is kept as a secret. Nobody will notice because everyone would be too shocked about the news of Ace's defeat at the hands of Blackbeard. After all, it's not like being the commander of the second division of the crew of the strongest man of the world means nothing.
I like the number one because everyone but the people who already know the Strawhats would believe that they are evil like the traitor of Crocodile. Such a fame would surely bring them problems if they go to a "popular" place like Fishman island.
-

I'm pretty sure he just meant that Luffy is abusing his body to the point of self-damage and it might harm him in the long run.
Like smoking, I guess… Bad analogy, I know.
-
I guess that battered victory scenario in which we have will be the first of many. It feel it's a sign of Oda's affinity to what was inevitably supposed to be a shorter arc than it was shining through.
-
What I'd like to see now is an arc where everyone in the group would be separated from the others and would have to get out of some bad trap all by him/herself, with no help from anyone else. Maybe Kuma will allow this: he won't fight them but would use his supposed teleportation power to send everyone of them to a different place… :-) Would be a good training before the NW !

When I actually started looking for Wizard of Oz references on Thriller Bark I started to find a lot. I'm convinced now that it really was one of the themes Oda-sensei used this time.
There are 4 female characters on Thriller Bark and there are 4 witches in Oz. Laura and her shadow help the straw hats while Cindry and Pelona fight against them. Cindry and the wicked witch of the east are both already dead at the start of the story. Laura's shadow zombie and the good witch of the north are both the first characters to help dorothy and the straw hats. Cindry and the wicked witch of the west are never actually fought. The wicked witch of the west was able to defeat every hero and then kept humiliating and playing pranks on Dorothy until she threw a bucket of water at her and accidentally found her one weakness. Pelona was also able to defeat every straw hat except for ussop who she played a lot of pranks on until he retaliated. The wicked witch of the west also had the distinctive feature that she always carried an umbrella around even indoors and even if it wasn't raining, just like Pelona.
If you look closely at the overgrown road the carriage stops on in the middle of the graveyard in chapter 445 you can see that the road to Mast Mansion was once made of rectangular bricks. Probably not yellow bricks though but you never know.
Luffy is a straw (hat) man who acts like the scarecrow, he seems silly and thinks he is silly but he's actually smart deep down. Brook is also a smart person who doesn't have a brain because he is just bones and he also dresses a little like a scarecrow because he has no flesh so his clothes hang down.
The tin man had a cursed axe and slowly replaced parts of himself with metal as he cut them off when he tried to work. Zoro has a cursed weapon too and has also been called heartless even though he isn't really. Franky got accused of accidentally replacing his heart just like the tin-man.
Nami and Robin were both separated from their homes and family by a disaster when they were young just like Dorothy.
Gecko Moria himself was crushed by a falling building in the end and his bare feet were sticking out from under it like what happened to the wicked witch of the east when Dorothy's farmhouse fell on it.

Okay, realy, now we know that Luffy was made as a character solely to represent a scarecrow in this arc.
The "analogies" you present do NOT work cause of their complicated nature.

You can decide for yourself. I'm not vain enough to think I'm always right about everything and I've been wrong before.
Spotting themes is one of the fun things about this manga and the only reason I posted that was so anyone else who can see it could enjoy it too. It's like the Panda Man gravestone in the panal I mentioned, when I finally see it, it just causes more wonder.
-
This arc is actually a big analogy to Valhalla, if anything. Shadow's Asgard, An army of undead warriors (Einherjar), An eternal Boar… yeah, those are all things from Valhalla.
But really, even THAT is grasping at Straws. Oda draws and writes what he wants. It's 90% his imagination.

You can have more than one theme in a work of art. Oda-sensei himself said he tries to work in at least three in an SBS or interview.
One of the other themes of thriller bark is probably Thriller itself, Dancing zombies and stuff. One of the others is A Nightmare before Christmas.
Thriller Bark is not a copy of any of these but fans of them will notice the references and smile.
Also, you left out the Ice Giants and O-thr.

I mentioned Odr, which is the closest to the intended name we can get for the giant monster. It's another name of Odin and also a name for a giant who was married to Freyja.
-
But its NOT OZ's name.
-

Actually Óðr doesn't have a d in it. I was not the one who found this out. I used to think it was pronounced odour too but actually the symbol is called Eth and is pronounced TH.

Still arguing about the name of Oddz? Just wait for Anime to show his name.

Yeah, because fansubs are the deciding factor in a name argument.
But it's definitely not Oz, Lobolover. The Japanese roughly translates to Ouzu, actually.
-
its either odz or oz,either way i cant wait for spoilers on weds/tues i guessing on these 3 things will happend.
-shadows return to crew and other pirates.
-brooke joins and leave thiller bark.
-kuma appears to warn luffy. -

So?Oh-z,I see no diference there.
Most people here tend to think O-z is the only way to pronounce "Oz".
-
its either odz or oz
Unless Oda himself decides since he likes the ring to it, anyone calling him Oz after reading the justification for the origin of his name is a complete stubborn-ass fucking moron. Plain and simple.
We are all aware that the middle character in Óðr is not a 'd', nor the first character 'correct' as a plain 'o'. However, since we don't possess that function on our keyboard and there's no way any of us will copy and paste the damn term everytime, not to mention 'd' appears in the name in other places in the English language when describing Óðr , it's simply easiest to call it 'Odr'.
I know that on my site I will probably end up using 'Odr' with an explanation regarding pronunciation since it is precisely what the name infers. Odz is a nice and easy way to get the point and pronounciation across, the 'point' being just as clear to Japanese readers to as many of us whom were detailed experts on Óðr before the name appeared in OP.
-
Like that cares. Most people will stil use Oz,or the damn coruption,ODZ.But I have alot of people saying the pronunciation is eithe Ohzu or Oozu.So it depends on how you read it,I guess.
-
you people argue too much about names, why dont you just calm down until the name gets said on the anime?
-
Most people still use Oz because or they are too lazy to update for the proper pronunciation, or because they don't want to admit that it's wrong.
As for the anime, how that will confirm his name?
-
It will be PRONOUNCED,as if there IS or IS NOT a d inbetween "O" and "Z".
-
The vocal pronounciation of it will. It did with Enel, because that's what everyone calls him.
-

Hell yeah, that will be big cinema here on the forums. I expect some candidates for the hall of shame here actually.^^

I remember thinking this exact same thing prior to op482's release and the spoiler and making a comment about you perhaps predicting this awesome end to Moria, but I'm also happy that this attack was saved for later in the series.
Regarding the comments about Gear 2nd shortening Luffy's lifespan. While there's no way I will believe that luffy will die before he becomes PK. After Lucci's deduction of Luffy's ability, he said that such a technique should surely shorten a person's life. However, given that luffy is essentially rubber, i've always thought that the effects this technique have on him are very minimal, and that Lucci's comments and observations were based on what would happen with someone who wasn't rubber. While Lucci does observe and make reference to Luffy's rubber properties, I doubt he understands the depth to how these rubber properties influence Luffy's bodily organs.
Summary. I expect Luffy to become a bit more competent using Gear 2nd and the shortness of breathe and such effects to become more minimal. This is shonen, and I expect Luffy to master this technique like all of the others.
-

Actually, I like Oddz and I think I'll keep using Oddz despite what is shown in the Anime. But that's just me.
-
Using both gears at once is defined as gear 4th on wikipedia. Silly wikipedia.
I assume it's just using both at once, and 4th will be something new (if there is a 4th at all)
-

About the shortening lifespan thing. I honestly think it was just said to raise tension during that situation. I highly doubt it'll really shorten Luffy's life. About whether Lucci meant someone who wasn't rubber, I'm pretty sure he said it couldn't even be done with a normal body. So I think he was talking specifically about Luffy's body. Either way though, I think the gist of it is that he'd get tired quicker when he uses Gear 2nd.
-
Most people still use Oz because or they are too lazy to update for the proper pronunciation, or because they don't want to admit that it's wrong.
QFT
Oda could come out tomorrow and call it 'Oz' and we'd have to live with that. That doesn't mean the name COMPLETELY ignores the origin. If he does, it's a stylistic choice and I'm perfectly willing to live with it.
But at this point, when we know where, why, how, when it comes from and fighting against that fact, it's being as stubborn as saying, "Well grass isn't really green, it's actually every other color but green and PINK!", not only do you sound like a technical nerd, but you're also wrong.
As for the anime, how that will confirm his name?
This is what I'm wondering as well. How is the animation going to confirm this? It's not like FUNimation = Oda and it's not like we'll see his name written anywhere in English in the Japanese animation.
It wouldn't bother me so much if this dumb-fuck attitude weren't coming from otherwise respectable members.
-
@Greg: I just call him Oz because it's easy and convenient. I'm aware of how his name is really spelled/pronounced. I see your point though.
-
Wow, what a bunch of snobs on this forum. People can call him whatever they want as long as it successfully communicates the intended message to everyone else.
I personally prefer Oz, not for any accuracy reason or any pride reason. Just flows better for me. Everyone understands that Oz is the same character as Odz. It won't matter in the long run who is closer to the correct spelling.
-
@Sogeking:

I assume it's just using both at once, and 4th will be something new (if there is a 4th at all)
Silly wikipedia, that was obviously Gear5.
I can't wait for Gear6 and Gear7 if Gear4 is ever revealed.
-
Wow, what a bunch of snobs on this forum.
Yeah, it's so snobbish wanting to help people do the right thing.
I just call him Oz because it's easy and convenient.
Is the extra keystroke really that much effort? I mean 'd' is on the way to 'z' and even closer to 'r'. This is what frustrates me, otherwise intelligent people just blatantly ignoring facts. I mean if you understand the point, then why ignore it? It's easier to type 'Lufy' with only one 'f' but none of us do.
It makes 'a no sense.
-
I spell Oz that way for the same reason I call him Enel: because any other way just doesn't look right. Odz makes me thing of the word "Odds" and Odr makes me think of "Odder".
Can we finally finish Thriller Bark now? This arc's been going on for almost a year.
-
When and how was his name confirmed as Oar/Óór/Odr and how does that become Odz?
-
-
The way you do it… it is.
You might consider I'm somewhat at wit's end considering I've been very nice about it for 6 months. Please don't speak about the situation in such a way unless you actually know the details.
When and how was his name confirmed as Oar/Óór/Odr and how does that become Odz?
No no no >_<
It has never been confirmed as anything beyond NOT being Oz unless Oda decides to do so for some stylistic random reason.
The final spelling will and should NOT be Odz. I don't even agree with Odz as something that should be an official spelling. It's never been about that it absolutely IS one thing or another, just that it is NOT Oz as that is an allusion to something completely different than the base design and inspiration for the character. Not to mention it ignores the actual pronunciation in both Japanese AND English. I'm not going into it again. You will find a plethora of data on the topic by using the search function including posts in the Name thread with all of the reasoning and proof with pretty pictures to boot. I just…no...I have nothing left to say. It just baffles the mind. Perhaps if I called every member that called him Oz by random-ass names I pulled out of a hat that have nothing to do with what their username is....no....fruitless. All analogies and explanations are lost.
There is no God.
