JUMP 40th Anniversary Project

I BRIEFLY checked the manga thread and didn't see it mentioned so I went ahead with a thread.

This week begins the 'new' year of JUMP as issue number 1 and to celebrate JUMP's 40 years of publication, they're doing something different this year with the spines. They're making a Dragonball-ish continuing image with the spines of each and every JUMP issue this year. And guess who is starting it off?

Luffy. Looks like he's eating some meat.

And if I'm not missing some crucial info somewhere, the ENTIRE FREAKING YEAR will be a giant OP image. What a great idea that makes JUMP a collectible item this year for foreign fans. Good luck collecting guys!

Would be cool if it was all OP, but somehow I think Luffy is just the first of many characters. Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if Naruto or Ichigo follow…though hopefully since its for all fourty years of Jump, they should have characters from all the eras. (going from a Go Nagai pic for "Harenchi Gakuen" all the way to maybe something newish like a series that started within that year)

I checked the page again and again and I don't see any mention of anything other than OP it even calls the project 'ONE PIECE SUPER LONG ILLUSTRATION' and it's only "Stage 1" in a series of projects celebrating JUMP's 40th. They're going to announce subsequent 'stages' in following issues, the next being issue 4-5 (so count on that one being our first double issue of the holidays) and expect those to be more centered around other series.

It really isn't a big project on the scanner's end and I'm sure someone here will undertake it. A year later and I still don't have a scanner sigh but since it's such a ambitious project on Shueisha and Oda's end I'd expect spine scans to appear online with chapter batches. Either that or you can always count on the rabid Japanese fanbase to collect it somewhere in some dark corner of the internet.

If through all of that it manages not to get done each week somehow, I'll take care of it since I've been collecting JUMPs since I got here anyway. You'll just have to put up with cropped photos.

Also, now that I think about it, how many issues must people have that are located in Japan and have picked up WJ weekly for years? How many full bookshelves do they own? :P

99.999% certain it's only OP. It's mentioned as the first 'plan' in a series of plans, the 2nd of which will be revealed in 4/5. It should be something completely unrelated and it specifically calls it 'The Second Plan', not 'Stage 2' or anything. The project itself is also called the Super Long OP Illustration.

www.sasugabooks.com sells individual issues for $5.05. I have been buying every issue of WSJ that features One Piece on the cover for over a year now from them, and they are great. I don't think I'm ready to pick up 50 straight issues for a spine image (as much as my heart pains me to say it), but I will definately continue to collect the One Piece covers.

How awesome will it be in a couple of years?

hehe everyone missunderstood me.

I realize that the dragonball one may not have been much bigger but atleast that one depicted the full lenght of the figures.
This one is just Luffys face. If it goes on like that its going to be very little interaction between any characters showing up on it.

What someone in Japan should start doing NOW is get 10 or 20 copies of EACH of the 50 issues, and then send them as a bunch to the rest of the world. (do they rent mini-storage lockers there? 1,000 copies of Jump would be a bit bulky)

I'd expect it would be cheaper to ship 50 issues in one box, than 50 boxes of one issue each. The manga itself is only about $100-120 or so (depends on exchange rate and how many issues they actually publish in a year); even if it costs $150 to box and mail it, it's still half the price of a true weekly subscription.

Why do you assume it's a huge one piece thing?

Since it's JUMP's annivarsary, I'd assume it'd include a giant image of all Jump's series throughout the years.

Since it's JUMP's annivarsary, I'd assume it'd include a giant image of all Jump's series throughout the years.

It's just gonna be One Piece. But if I read right, tho I can be wrong, One Piece's will only go till mid 2008, then they're changing to another series…tho I think I may very well be wrong.
