Best video game to movie ever. Bar-fucking-none.
Which isn't saying much.
wait… is it out now? (i'm so out of the loop)
and yeah, that's saying a lot. resident evil movies sucked, doom was ok, and anything before that, well.... >.>;
huh what a pleasant suprise i had no clue that there was even a Silent hill movie in production.
and agreed that saying its the best Game to movie ever isnt saying much since its main competion is those god awful uwe boll movies:booh:.
Which isn't saying much.
So saying Batman Begins is the best American comic to movie isn't saying much?
so it's out! that's cool. what about the story? is it brand new or is it something similar to the first game?
i'm SO waiting to see that damn triangle-head.
It initially follows the storyline but it digresses drastically into a new story, NOT TO SAY THAT THIS IS BAD! This story more focuses on
! the concept of mother and daughter relationship also they had too make sure that the audience will be captivated so you can't just have Rose running around by herself the entire time (hence the church is in this game). Very very good adaptation from a game to a movie. The music was EXCELLENT as well (especially the credits being the theme song from SH3) my only gripe is
! Pyramid head only shows up twice boo…but I guess they shouldn't over expose him
@omae:
So saying Batman Begins is the best American comic to movie isn't saying much?
Batman begins kind of sucked…plus it was horribly flawed.
anyway, even though i've never played the game this is the only movie that i see as a horror movie that catches my interest (other then The Thing)
what about the story? is it brand new or is it something similar to the first game?
It's a nice blend of 1 and 2 borrowing more villains from two and more story from 1. Therefore while it can't make sense in the game storyline, it's the closest thing to doing so without spiralling into:
A. Something like FF7 AC that alienates anyone who has never played the game.
B. Something "fresh" and "hip" to get a big audience.
i'm SO waiting to see that damn triangle-head.
I see a lot of fans complaining that he's not in it a lot. If he was in it any MORE it would kill the handful of scenes he's in. You have to consider they want to leave him for possible future installments and also….it helps that he does....
Hmm...I won't spoil it. But he does possibly the coolest thing done in any horror film. Absolutely brutal.
Batman begins kind of sucked…plus it was horribly flawed.
Your opinion. Certainly can't change that. But a lot of people disagree with that. Myself included.
I just saw that move last night it was sooooo cooooool!!!
And i played ever game silent hill 2 was the best though..
you could put it in a spoiler tag, I love spoilers. Plus it may get me more interested.
Denying its flaws too? I'll throw the biggest one out there. Remember how close the train was to its destination? And the distance it slid? Using any logic at all it would have made it far enough and well…it didn't.
edit: advent children....horrible.

If that's the "biggest flaw" you could find in a movie that made it believable for a man to run around in a bat suit as compared to other comic to movie films, I need say no more.
Everything, the mood, the music, the plot, the motion, the characters and locations. All seem ripped from the game and they are incredibly well put together for a film.
I mean, it even has a 'end boss' of sorts with special music.
If I have any complaint, it's that the film is in no way scary. At all. But I didn't give a crap because what was going on was just too good. It was difficult to watch at one point though. I can't believe they didn't cut away during one scene. Shows a lotta balls and it surely earned its R rating.
@omae:
So saying Batman Begins is the best American comic to movie isn't saying much?
Yes, because I can name several that are better.
Hell, it isn't even the best Batman film, let alone the best cinematic version of a comic ever.
Well, in my opinion Batman Begins is the best Batman film and superhero comic film.
I honestly don't see why so many people think the original Batman is better (I'm thinking nostalgia), but that's their opinion I guess. I watch it whenever it comes on television, but no matter how many times I do, it still doesn't impress me that much. I guess it all comes down to the Batman character…sorry, but I don't consider the Batman in the original movie to be all that Batman-like.
People always try to pick out flaws in Batman Begins, which kind of annoys me. They try to find everything that couldn't work in real life. Whatever. I'm not "denying it's flaws" as I 'm aware that it has them. But that doesn't change that I enjoyed it.
I'm a huge American comic book fan (and Batman's always been my favorite superhero). But still, I only really like Batman Begins and the Spiderman movies. Not a big fan of the X-Men movies at all, although I like the comics. And I'm talking superhero movies here, not just any movie based on comics.
I guess it all comes down to the Batman character…sorry, but I don't consider the Batman in the original movie to be all that Batman-like.
Actually, I wasn't referring to the Tim Burton Batman, though I still prefer that to Batman Begins.

My problems with it come less from the massive plotholes (like why the MacGuffin Device doesn't slaughter everybody around it when it's activated when it was already shown to work in a way that should have done just that), but from two things, one of which isn't really the movie's fault to be honest:
Yes, because I can name several that are better.

I prefer the original batman simply because of jack nicholson(sp?). He simpky stole the movie away from Keaton and made the movie enjoyable. It also doesnt hurt (for this and batman begins) that frank miller's vision of batman had an influence on the film because it was a decidedly darker and serious version of batman than say…Adam West's version. It would be cool if they could make a movie version of the dark knight returns (i just love miller's take. It doesnt hurt that i had to study Year One and DKR for a class i took)
Actually, I wasn't referring to the Tim Burton Batman, though I still prefer that to Batman Begins.
Which one were you referring to?
I was just talking about most people…since it usually comes down to Tim Burton Batman vs. Batman Begins.
Although, whatever you think of Batman Begins as a film, I still don't see another movie that has a better version of the Bruce Wayne/Batman character. Which to me is the most important thing, not camera angles.
@omae:
So saying Batman Begins is the best American comic to movie isn't saying much?
I'd say it's saying quite a lot because there have been a multitude of great comic movies in recent years.
How did this turn from Silent Hill to Batman?
video game movies and comic book movies fit hand in hand i guess

Well, even then, I prefer Tim Burton's film.

Frankly, I really didn't see much in Batman Begins that justifies that; I hear it enough, but I just don't see it myself. Quite a few people suggest that Wayne's willingness to go Jack Ruby on the ass of the guy who killed his parents makes him more human or something. To me, that's not Batman. He may not have superpowers, but he's hardly an normal person.
I wasn't that impressed with this depiction of Ra's al Ghul either.
Wow, this is still going on?
Might I suggest: http://apforums.net/showthread.php?t=2231&highlight=batman+begins

I forgot about Mask of the Phantasm. I was talking about live action. But counting animated movies, Mask of the Phantasm was my favorite.
Anyway, I think in that older thread I already explained why Batman would do that. And it made sense to his character, since he did something kind of similar in the comics (Year Two). He did intend to kill Joe Chill. It's not something Batman Begins created. The Batman Begins thing was even more understandable, considering that he had already been Batman for quite awhile in Year Two when he attempted to kill Chill.
So even if Batman Begins version of Batman isn't Batman to you, that doesn't mean it's not closer to the comic version. It's hard for people to get the "exact" Batman right, since there's been so many versions over the years. But I still think Begins did the best job with the Batman character of all the live action movies.
By the way, I have to say I do like the first Burton Batman movie (I'm still planning on getting DVDs of all the Batman movies actually), just not it's version of the Batman character when compared to Begins (Joker was more of the star anyway). As far as looks go, I always thought Keaton's Bruce Wayne was kind of goofy. And if we're talking about Batman killing…doesn't Batman kill more people in the first Burton one than in Begins?
20.2 Million and first place in its first weekend. Rock on. Not that anything less should have been expected with competition like Scary Movie 4.
I thought that the point of Silent Hill was not to look scary but to feel scary, like the settings and everything. Meh that is just what I thought from what I read.
I haven't seen it yet but from what some say I just might.
It's not gonna win best drama but it was basically 2 hours of awesomeness. If you're a fan of the series there's no way you can be dissapointed because this goes far beyond the violence seen in the actual games. Well…if you're into that kinda thing.
Maybe I just haven't haven't watched enough 1980's horror flicks but I've never seen what PH did to that poor zealot done before.
@omae:

You mean the
! TOTALLY RIPPING OFF AN ENTIRE BODY'S FLESH
thing ? Yeah, that was surreal @_@
I think I expected just a leeeettle bit more from the movie myself, but probably 'cause I thought Pyramid Head was gonna tear more shit up than he really did  Might see it again this weekend, I dunno.
it's finally out tomorrow for me. can't wait. i seriously hope i won't be too frightened. i can remember these times while i played SH2, where i couldn't even move forward because i was scared.
well any american/occidental movie can't be as frightening as a good ol' japanese/korean scary movie so it might be ok. even if christophe gans really likes japanese atmosphere. anyone watched his crying freeman? that was pretty good.
You mean the XXXXXXXX
Hell yeah. That was insane that and the part where…oink oink....I can't believe they didn't cut away. That was horrible.

You won't be scared. I can't stress enough that if you're a fan of the game, watching it play out is nowhere near as frightening as playing. Not to mention Gans sucks at dramatic tension so it just isn't there except in one particularly claustrophobic scene which was REALLY well done.
What he did do an excellent job of was basically making you feel weak just as in the game. You'll see for a very important chunk of the flick, the main character is somehow disabled and that serves an EXCELLENT purpose for helping the audience accept the fact that she simply can't react as a normal person could. It's all about running in the film and that's just fantastic since the game is essentially the same concept. You COULD spend ten minutes pea-shooting a giant amorphous death blob from Hell or you could try and avoid them somehow. The movie offers that same experience through some clever ideas.
How can I make a good analogy? You know how in great comedy films there's the _____ scene or the _____ scene? Silent Hill is essentially an entire movie of notable scenes. The scene where this or that happens. Again, not exactly gonna win any awards but it gets my vote for simply being awesome.
I can't wait for the inevitable sequel.
Hahah Resident evil made me laugh so much 'HEY the dead are coming to life.. LETS ALL WALK THROUGH THE GRAVEYARD, YAY'
haha good times, good times.
I don't like the Silent Hill games myself but I do wanna see the movie just on the basis its the only horror movie out at the moment here.

then that'll be great. funny how what the fans consider as great is especially why the critics didn't like the movie. everything about the running stuff, and wandering from one room to another.
it's good to see how the movie is like the game. because that's basically why silent hill is much more better than resident evil. having to cross a dark corridor with a strange sound at the bottom is much more frightening than having to fight a freakin' 20 feet tall monster.
that's basically also why the ring sucked compared to ring. good to see that gans didn't fall in the trap of hollywood, like kasowitz did with gothika.
There's no comparing this to the RE film. RE is explosions, stunts, big-budget mayhem, hardcore rock, inexplicable situations, defying the laws of physics (not that SH isn't out there but at least it makes sense outside the real world). This film is a somewhat interesting story with some decent acting and a lot of f'd up shyt.

yeah, i was talking about the games actually, sorry for the misunderstanding.
RE was in my opinion lame (even if it was fun), but when it comes to games to movie adaptation, just think about doom, then every other adaptation rocks.
Oh it doesn't matter dude. You could replace every time I used 'movie' with 'game' and it would still make sense
 Nothing against RE though….(the game that is)
i'm just glad they didn't screw it up by adding tons of action and explosions and try to make it like the stupid RE movies… for a long time i was afraid they would do that for some reason.... but still sounds awesome to me. I love the Silent Hill games. <3
sorry for the bump! (did a search, dunno what page it was on)
But I finally got to see Silent Hill at the damn dollar theater XD
Wow. Just….wow. I loved it!!!!!
Seriously, I was totally satistfied with how true to the game it really was. Everything, from the music (oh god I ADORE the music) the environments, the monsters.... Beautiful.
! Ok, so the acting was…. rather bad. I did love Cybil though, she was portrayed rather well. I got a little annoyed with the little girl, not Sharon, the ...demonic one. The main character, she was alright. I didn't hate her too much. That crazy old woman... yeah, she played that part really well. I guess overall, the acting just needed work. The potential for the characters was there, just... really cheesy lines I guess.
! I did find it pretty spiff on that one part in the gas station, where Rose is asking where Silent Hill was, there was music playing in the background... It was "Waiting For You" from the SH4 soundtrack. I freakin love that song, so that made me happy! X3
! And all I gotta say is... Pyramid Head was SO hardcore. I couldn't believe my eyes, how real he looked, he looked JUST like PH in Silent Hill 2. And damn... I can see why this was rated R! I mean, you can tell him ripping that girl's skin off was CG.... but it was really well done. And freaky when he tossed her skin at the church door.. that was awesome XD
I was sad he wasn't in it very much, but I guess it would lose some of the scaryness if he was in it a lot more. I got the worst chills ever when he showed up, it was so great.
And I just realized, looking at the PH cosplayer at A-Kon... its like he referenced the movie version, because it looked very much identical.
!
! I dunno but… one thing that really pissed me off is how Cybil died. That was.... holy crap. I was mad. I really didn't want her to die, she was awesome! And watching her skin burn... that was so crazy. Well, its a good thing it was like at the end of the movie, even though she dissappeared for a bit, while Rose went and looked for her daughter.... and ran into a hoard of freakin Nurse Zombies!!! Those were so badass, so much like the SH2 nurse zombies... they even had crowbars!! X3 the way they moved and everything... holy crap. It was soo freakin scary when she turned her light off and they stopped moving... and she had to walk in between them... God that was really freaking scary to me.
! Lots of monsters from the second game, like the spitter things... that was insane. And the bugs from the first game... ewww those were so nasty! XD
Over all…. I'd say that I really enjoyed it. I pretty much decided to ignore everyone else's opinions about it. Because I knew from the moment it was announced, that I would want to see it... For I be a huge Silent Hill fan. Even if it sucked. And I don't think it sucked. At all. The big thing for me is, that unlike the shitty Resident Evil movies... it actually stayed very true to the games. That was what made the movie for me.
I'm so gonna buy it when it comes out on DVD! Maybe I'll wait till there's like a special edition.
Yes. I am a very happy Neko and I'm gonna go draw now while listening to my beautiful Silent Hill music.
Just finished watching it on Encore. I never played the games, but do know a lot about them. Am I alone in thinking this movie wasn't scary? I went into watching it expecting such and….I didn't find it scary or creepy at all. I only had one jump and that was at the end when Rose was walking through the frozen crowd of nurses and the first one flinched.
But yeah, good movie. Probably should be called great due to it being adapted from a game which such movies usually suck.
^If you played the games, at least SH2, you'd be shivering in ur sleep fearing Pyramid Head's gonna pop-up next to you to give you the ass raping of your life….
I didn't say the games weren't scary, I know they are. I've kinda experienced them. But I meant the movie…what? Is it "people who have had scary experiences with the game will find this movie scary as fuck" type of deal?
@Freeman-12:
^If you played the games, at least SH2, you'd be shivering in ur sleep fearing Pyramid Head's gonna pop-up next to you to give you the ass raping of your life….
Yeah. I had some really weird dreams after playing SH 2… great stuff, though...
Hey Greg, I've only played the second game and am a fan of, really, the characters in it (Eddie, James, even slutty Maria and that little bitchy demon-child girl whose name I forgot). Would the movie be enjoyable on atmosphere alone? I mean I like that part of the game, but that's because I'm in it, I mean it's not necessarily only more horrifying when you're behind the controller, but more involving all around.
What I guess I mean is, if all I saw for a couple hours was someone running around in the fog being chased by grotesque monsters, I'd get bored. That's not gonna happen, right?
also
is kinda ontopic I guess (hope it's not ofn)The movie is amazing. I sang its praises here when it was released.
i've played the games from the begining and i am a hard core story following nerd
AND I THOUGHT THE MOVIE WAS FLAT OUT BILE and i wont go into why because i dont like flaming but it is just my opinon and i will leave it at that
I really enjoyed the film. I think as a standalone film and even more so as a video game film, it was amazingly well put together. Right down to having the equivalent of a 'last boss'.
In the end, it was nothing more than a well thought out fangasm, right down to Pyramid Head being there for no apparent reason. It makes for a great dosage of fanservice, but not a great movie.
Well, I think for a film based on a video game that doesn't exactly have a gripping plot to begin with, it worked well as a fangasm. Plus I didn't need a reason for PH to be there. Since he was 2's hero's creation it would be impossible to have him in the film unless said character was portrayed in the movie. And I think it would have been annoying that they went as far as making a SH film without touching on a villain as awesome as PH.
I mean….what video game to film movies are better? Super Mario Brothers? Resident Evil? It's a popcorn flick made for fans and teens with extra cash to burn. I liked it for what it was.
I'm not saying it was bad. I certainly enjoyed it because it was Silent Hill on the big screen. However, looking at the big picture, it just wasn't good as a movie, looking past the obvious fact that it's made to get fans all giddy, which it happens to do better than basically any other video game movie.
funny, I got this film last week for free, hated it the first time…..and.........hated it again >.< If anyone can play Region 2 (I think thats the UK one) and would like it, just ask.
I really wonder what there is not to like about it since it's basically like watching like one of the games unfold. Anything specific? I believe I touched on all the points I liked about it in the original thread. I'm just wondering what there is not to like about it since after seeing it I basically felt like I had just watched the first and second games in a highly condensed format.
some people are just narrow-minded…
I am a huge fan of the games, and I LOVED the movie. For a video game movie, it really did stay true to the games. It wouldn't have been the same if PH wasn't in it. When I heard about the movie, I immediately thought "PH has to be in it!" So what if it didn't make sense, its just a movie, its not like its canon or anything.
