No break next week.
Nami went to legoland, apparently.
Some thoughts:
While Shanks actions against Barto may have been to secure the importance of his flag, that last backstab may cause things to escalate further. I can't take off my mind that the Grand Fleet is fated to "become stronger and cause a major incident" in the future. Barto is the Grand Fleet's spiritual leader, the one who got them together to follow Luffy, so I wouldn't be surprised if this demands retaliation, and that it eventually will get Luffy involved in this conflict.
Blackbeard Pirates are always a joy to see, but I'm still confused how Van Augur was able to be at both Winner Island and Egghead almost at the same time. We saw a Blackbeard ship (presumably Devon's) off the island before the Egghead cutaway scenes, and Augur was still fighting the Heart Pirates with Blackbeard in the meanwhile. Sure, he can teleport, but it was also established in Egghead that he's still getting used to it and couldn't teleport from Egghead to their ship in one go, so how the hell the timeline works in that?
Also, now that Egghead is completely over, I need to point out we still don't know who fed Luffy food in Fabriophase, essentially ensuring the Straw Hats' survival. It's weird that the story has just glossed over it, and, while there are theories on Caribou, Van Augur or Kizaru doing it, we deserve confirmation. So, is this a mystery that's to be revealed off-story, like in a SBS, or does it still matter for the events ahead? Could we have a mysterious stowaway with us right now?
The end of the chapter is intriguing, but I won't spend any time theorizing on it. It could be hallucination, or it could be that Nami is in some giant's toybox. Who's calling Nami to wake up? Who changed her clothes? Or is she dreaming or something? What happened to the Sunny? Who was in it (while the chapter suggests only Franky, Brook, Jinbe and Robin were not in it, it's not confirmed that all others are unaccounted for). Too much stuff to think about, so it's better to just wait a few days and get the answer (or more clues).
I feel we are still going to see cutaway scenes like Shanks' and Blackbeard's (and the Revolutionaries' in 1125's closing pages) in the next chapter(s). There's still Cross Guild to see its post-Egghead development at least, and we could also get some other characters/factions that may not have been important in Egghead but will be important ahead.
"Naive" is trash. Stephen pulled out the "bigger softy than I realized".
Damn, forgot to mention. I think the Laffitte stuff isn't really Dragon related. I think it's part of something else with the CDs.
Objectives
The last time Laffitte had dialogue was for the flashback where they talked about Burn Scar man and Shiryu speculated that he might be connected to the WG.
So has the Elbaf arc started already?
So what to Jewelry Bonney crew? Have they just be forgotten about.
This chapter definitely feels like the next arc has begun and the mid-arc stuff is over. But I really hope we at least get to see Cross Guild next chapter before fully moving on, since we got the BBP and the RHP this week.
With the Vivre Card seemingly revealing Perona was intended to be a part of CG, their next scene could tie with Moria's escape mentioned in this one and complete this plot line that has been (sloppily) carried off-screen.
There's the explanation for why Dorry and Brogy left Little Garden! It...could be better, considering we saw them still fighting on Little Garden during the Post-Timeskip Decks of the World cover story so I guess it took Oimo and Kashi two years to get there from Water7? I suppose they aren't the smartest, given that they were fooled for 50 years by the WG, so maybe they got sidetracked somehow. That Dorry and Brogy just wanna pick up weapons and then continue their fight is really cool though, so satisfying conclusion, how we got there could've been better.
I have no clue what Oda is doing with Shanks honestly, I'm sure Barto is fine but what annoyed me with the Kid scene was that it felt like Oda kept hyping up a character who in my opinion didn't need it at all. Even Imu couldn't stop Sabo from escaping, Blackbeard couldn't stop Law/Bepo and he didn't really get a complete victory in Amazon Lily either, while Shanks gets to look perfect at all times as a protagonist. And usually it even makes sense to make the villains seem insurmountable, because it makes it more satisfying when the protagonists eventually do. But this scene isn't even hype, and makes me question if Shanks is indeed a protagonist which despite Luffy wanting a crew that surpasses the Red Hairs since chapter 1 and "I want to take down all of the emperors" and Shanks showing up in Marijoa I never actually questioned. Mainly, I thought Blackbeard would just kill Shanks and that'll be that, but I'm not so sure anymore. I don't think Shanks has done anything outright "evil", but it certainly doesn't feel like he's set up to be on the Straw Hats side in the same way that Dragon and the Revolutionary Army is for example. So if anything, this scene has made Shanks more intriguing for me, after I was pretty down on him after the Kid and Ryokugyu scenes.
Blackbeard pirates remain highly entertaining, not much more to say.
Looks like we're in Elbaf, agree with what I've see people speculate that it's a toy castle of a giant (maybe Loki?) and with Lego being a Danish company and vikings coming from Denmark (among the other scandinavian countries ofc) that checks out.
I wonder if the fact that we did not get more around the world chapters means Oda will continue with the cutaways like he did in Egghead, which would be great. Despite the many breaks and 68 chapters not exactly being short, Egghead did still feel short to me, and I think that's largely because of the cutaways keeping it fresh every week, but we'll see.
Am I the only one who thinks that the in between islands arc this time was pretty quick? Usually we see a whole lot more
I was surprised we got nothing on Cross Guild

Are you sure Law survived? I thought I saw Van Augur use Room Room on egghead and Devon told him how clumsy he uses his powers and he responded that the powers are still new to him.
I think Law died to gave the rest of his crew a chance to survive.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@One-Piece-Fan-0 Van Augur has the Warp fruit. Law was carried off by Bepo.

such an odd chapter
why would Barto remain in an island for +30 days ? did he immigrate or something?
the explosion was so massive i can't help but wonder how it came outta normal size rifle?
none of those two make adequate sense, and on top of that offscreening the fight is bad. the guy has the best defensive ability ever, remember Oden couldn't scratch the barrier and an Admiral had to find another way cuz he simply gave up. he has unbreakable barrier and it's proven many times so this outcome with no fight showing tastes really bad. during dressrosa the only time he got hit is because he was protecting someone else and that person was one of his idols. THAT was his only weak point!! and it shows you how strong he was, if blocking a blow that had shaken the entire island isn't enough for you.
Oda decided that Bartolomeo isn't worth his ink anymore. and there are many of us who liked the character, so could you imagine how we feel after this? giving him the worst ending a fucker could think of. without even a farewell fight like a normal manga would do.
what's worse is how could we enjoy Luffy's most awaited reunion after this ? if they ignore what happened it's bad. if they start a conflict it's bad.
how could you fuck up so badly that you made people hate Shanks? such an awful handling.
the story will end and people will remember Whitebeard as the only yonko who was handled right.

The crew has no real navigational skills. And even if they did, they would need to wait for one of the Log Poses to fully set anyway.
@King-Cannon It's also possible that they were in nearby waters and the Red Hair pirates captured them and brought them to be punished in front of the citizens.
Barto and his crew are not dead. We know that the alliance is at origin of a great incident and maybe what happens this chapter starts it.
Oda seems to want make Shank's crew a bit more dark. That is an interesting decision, I wonder what will comes of it even though the evil Shanks theory I can read sounds a bit too much.
Blackbeard scene help to recap a lot of information in addition to being fun:
The crew has splitted and Nami seems to be a doll in a Lego building. The new arc doesn't waste time ! I wonder why the crew has no Vivre card of Luffy. That would be useful for such situation
After like four more chapters of Egghead loose ends than expected, I think we can finally call the transition to an Elbaf arc complete. But we still spend most of the chapter on things that follow up past arcs. Shanks has been waiting to check Barto off his to-do list since Wano, the Blackbeard sections reference the cutaway sequence and events from Egghead's final set piece, there's a Bonney and Kuma moment, and more updates on the Revolutionaries' siege. Any of those things, I think, you could justify grouping as part of Egghead's epilogue if not for the obvious first plot hook of Elbaf in the final pages of the chapter.
But that's just One Piece sometimes. Look back and think about where Thriller Bark and Sabaody separate. Chapter 490 contains all together Brook's new crewmate toast, Kuma's debrief about letting Luffy go, and the giant mysterious figures in the Florian Triangle - all important story or theme points for Thriller Bark - but also the arrival at the Redline and the introduction of Camie - vital setup for Sabaody. The transition of arcs happens kind in the middle of the chapter. Such is the nature of a serialised story after it gets big enough.
And what an opening to an arc. The crew gets smashed on hallucinogenic booze and loses a day or two and end up separated, left to piece together what they missed. It's fairly unique. You might compare it to Zou, where the reader's POV starts at the end of a normal arc and we get the main events filled in via flashback. But after Egghead's cutaway, there's precedent for not circling back to the skipped day as well. It's going to take a lot more than one chapter - and probably the next one - to be fully sure what Oda's building up to here and how he plans to structure it.
The opening party has two moments I really like. Nami being driven to drink by the giants' warrior customs, and Bonney and Kuma finally reunited and able to enjoy the open sea they dreamed of. Kuma's even smiling. He's going to make it!
On the other hand, it really handwaves away the timeline discrepancies with Dory, Brogy, Oimo and Kashii's journey. Maybe they could have waved that hand a little faster to say the duo from Ennies Lobby at least reached Elbaf and decided only recently to go check in on the captains. Oh well.
And then we have Shanks and Bartolomeo. This is a much darker side of Shanks than has previously been shown, or at least than has previously been directed toward anyone we like. I think with so long offscreen it's been easy to fill in the blanks with what we want to see of the man, and it's inevitable some fans are going to be shocked, surprised and even disappointed by the reality. Personally, I like a mentor with a secret or two to dramatise the relationship. I'm interested to see what Oda does with it.
Shanks acts like a pro pirate here, a seasoned pillar of the criminal underworld. The importance of respect, reputation and the risks that come from people thinking they can get away with crossing you all speak to historical piracy and even more modern organised crime. But his expressions stick in my mind. The blacked out and shaded-over eyes could simply be a sign he's in serious mode, but his close up when Bartolomeo expresses regret that he won't see Luffy be King of the Pirates betrays genuine sadness. Compare and contrast his encounter with Kid, which features the same darkened eyes early on, but a much angrier expression in the aftermath.
Does Shanks regret that he has to escalate a turf war with Luffy? Does he simply not like that the role of Emperor forces him to be ruthless for the sake of protecting his territory? The fast transition from appreciating Barto's loyalty to delivering the final lesson only amps up the ambiguity.
Props to Barto though. His commitment is real and wonderful. Hope this isn't the end of his story.
Blackbeard's sequence doesn't give us as much new, just a sense of plans and building toward the future. I enjoyed the details of the bandages on the skull and learning that Garp is still alive though. And poor Pudding. That's going to be an interesting source of conflict in the future, when Sanji gets wind of it.
It's also nice getting a view of the Revolutionaries' actual tactics through Laffite's sequence. The bombs and fires give the sense of kind of a guerilla operation, all sabotage and terror. From all the Dragon "..." and "looking east" memes that have been repeated enough to become insufferable, I think there's a chunk of the fanbase that needed to see this stuff to understand it.
We return to the Strawhats for the final new story hook. Bonney getting to act like a little girl again, clinging to Jinbei's side, is the cutest touch. But hang on, if we're acknowledging her as a kid here, she probably wasn't drinking with the rest. She might be key to figuring out what happened while everyone else was blacked out.
I'm looking forward to where this Lego-look castle is going to go next week. We've seen Oda toy with this idea for a colour spread many years ago (chapter 622) and it looked pretty good back then. Makes you wonder how long he's wanted to do this. I have no particularly novel theories about what's going on here - the same likely conclusions everyone else seems to be reaching - she's probably on Elbaf already, a plaything to some kind of child prince. Maybe Loki, but I don't know if the timing lines up him to act that young. The real question is how this happened while the rest of the crew remains at sea. Did an envoy sail on to meet them? Could the Great Erik have reached Elbaf then departed again for some reason?
And hey, no break next week. Three chapters in a row again! Looking forward to seeing where all this is going with you all!
@King-Cannon The fact that he sailed from East blue to Grand line then to New world without a navigator is a reminder that no one should take this manga seriously.
it reminds me again how beautiful pre TS OP was.

That's true. One could say that Barto can use his barrier to protect them from a lot of hazards until they luckily arrive anywhere, but then the same chapter that reveals they have no navigator also has Barto refusing to use his barrier against nature. It's just a gag, but it does hurt one of the serious aspects of the story.
Some theories:

Some theories:
- Shanks attacking Barto happened a month ago. Not sure about the timeline, but it seems to have been before Shanks attacked Kidd in Elbaf. Wonder if that will put Shanks against Luffy somehow, since Barto can’t be out of the story yet..
Barto arrived at the island and burned the flag 1 month ago. His confrontation with Shanks happened now (for whatever reason he decided to stay in that island this entire time).
I think what strikes me most about the whole Bart-Shanks affair is that there’s no out for Bart. If he fights back (again, because he’s taken a few injuries, though his crew seems fine), he loses and possibly dies. If he willingly “poisons” himself and then is told he gets to leave because he’s loyal to Luffy, he loses and possibly dies. If he agrees to “poison” Luffy (essentially agreeing to serve Shanks), well there’s no reason to think Shanks won’t have his ship sunk, so he loses and possibly dies.
Kaido, at the very least, does give you an option to live (by joining him) even if you’ve wrecked his territory (see Drake), but that option doesn’t exist with Shanks.

Take the poison and leave. Then once you are out of sight, throw it away.
I don't know if it's your case, but I think a lot of people are having trouble understanding this scene because the early spoilers said it was a "loyalty test". So by the time people read the chapter, they had already set their minds into interpreting the scene like that even though nothing in it actually suggests Shanks was testing Barto.
Shanks knows he needs to punish someone who attacked his territory, even more if it's a subordinate of another Emperor. But he obviously has no intention of fighting Luffy and killing his men. So he came up with this fake punishment that would fool those around.
Bartolomeo drinking the poison was not intended, it ruined his plan, exposed him and the fact he never intended to punish Luffy/Barto.
Now his hand was exposed, Shanks opted to take the loss with a laugh instead of passing a real punishment. But Yasopp disagreed.
The elimination of Barto frustrates me a lot
Unlike Kidd this pirate is not in the main race so what's the point of his elimination unless you want to set up Shanks as a rival instead of an ally or at least friendly
I don't care about Buggy, Are you saying Teach isn't enough of a rival that you had to add Shanks on the rivalry list? that is ridiculous specially after Shanks helped them in Wano with Luffy smiling knowing it's him.
why should they be rivals when they're already friendly and share the same goal?
Kaido & Big Mom can make an alliance to find the One Piece but Luffy & Shanks can't ? sigh.
Chams please enough with your theories
you know Blackbeard is my favorite character
I don't want him to help the Tenryūbito even for his personal gain, People might mistake him for Roger.
Maybe they’ll use puddings powers to verify wether Caribou is telling the truth

There was an out and it was given to him and he took it as the action of a naive idiot, and with an intent and the vibe of “I haven’t learned my lesson. Why should I stop doing what I was doing.”
Now could they have heard him, Haki-Felt his intent, maybe, I say yes
Yassop as a loyal official who has to protect the captain’s rep and the crew understood that they were dealing with a knucklehead that needed a more clear message.

Blackbeard knows about Lunarians and Minks having Sulong, so I wouldn't be surprised if he knows about what the Three Eyes can do.
@Goukan I didn't make myself clear. Blackbeard certainly knows what the 3-eye people can do, what I'm saying he probably doesn't know is that Pudding has eaten the memo memo fruit. So, he knows about her racial abilities, but not about her DF.
After reading Barto's remorse in the official, I am very glad he and his ship was 'sploded. Trying to pass himself off as just some punk kid who didn't know any better once he gets a butt-whooping was disgusting. I think Kaido called it "playing pirates"; this was the most "playing pirates" moment we've gotten in the series so far. The fact that he was talking all that shit right before he went up in flames kinda proves the point.
you clearly don't know what shittalking is
he described him as he is before Yasopp took the capitana from his half ass'd leader.
this chapter was insulting to Shanks more than anything. his own subordinates don't bother for a permission to attack
and bullying someone who's much weaker than you only makes you look weaker.
@hideoushorrendous There's no way a guy with Observation Haki so developed he can see 10 seconds into the future wouldn't have known Yasopp's intention. Shanks was 100% ok with destroying Barto's ship with a cheap shot.
@Deicide
Im here playing devils advocate so I would not be 100% sure about that, having it on all the time is draining and why have it on when you are surrounded by your own men?
But yeah Shanks totally knew what was about to happen, and he doesn’t need observation Haki to know what happens when Yasopp gets serious.
@The-Light-of-Shandora I don't think he has the future sight all the time, what I mean is that the future sight shows how powerful Shanks' observation is, and that basic observation is enough to feel intentions.
But yeah, Shanks do not need Observation for that. It's his crew, he should know them very well. Shanks was fine with what was about to happen.
I don't think Shanks was "fine", but he knows Yasopp was right. He had explained a few minutes before the possible consequences of letting someone invade his territory, burn his flag and go unpunished. Once his "fake punishment" failed, he tried to disregard what he had already said and just let it go, but Yasopp followed through.
It's an interesting scene to set the tone of the relationship between Shanks and his closest officers. Shanks had clearly made his choice, but Yasopp disregarded it and acted against it in front of Shanks; we can see things are a lot less "vertical" here than even in the SH or the BBP.
Could lead to something if Shanks is ever put in a position where he has to chose between Luffy and whatever goal his crew had been pursuing so far.
Zoro had to check Luffy when he was about to let his good nature get in the way of being Captain (in dealing with Usopp). Yasopp did the same.
Either way, Barto deserved it, so it's no biggie. Ppl keep messing with Yonko Shanks and then getting surprise-Pikachu'd when they get clapped in response.
