I'm going to confess something here for no reason specifically but his oscar move being impolite to Ke Huy Quan on stage still pisses me off to this day. Like, really really annoyed me.
This is after taking into account that he took a PR photoshot with him after and the many internet comments saying that he might be nervous (which I highly doubt) and that, know that this is subjective, my own personal life experience intuitioned every part of me (largely based on his body language and how I know people like that in real life) that it was deliberate. I worked a fair amount of years in the service industry and we get shithead personalities like that often (friendly and charming on the surface, a fucking asshole an hour in once you are dispensable)

That and while he might be an arguably good actor (I'll argue he's not really up there with the greats), him being this showman in all his Oppenheimer interviews and pulling out "how to look good and be the friendlist person" in the room moves in them (while he had a different approach in his Marvel interviews) told me that none of that shit was genuine.

His exit from MCU was a graceful one so his only back for the money but of fucking course "I enjoy playing complicated characters" has to be a line he has to pull in because how else will he mindset himself into good acting as a craft requiring actual passion and blood and tears. I know the world is fucked but people worshipping RDJ coming back or that he himself is everything nauseates the hell out of me.

All that is to say I might become particularly schizo when it comes to him. I know, actors act, water is wet, PR is PR but I can't for the life of me find it in me to like him as a person.

I don't have strong feelings for him as an actor. I don't even think he's as irreplaceable as iron man as many people say, but he's definitely a draw. Oh, I have one thing. Hated the Sweet Tooth show starting with season 2.

The more I'm mulling it over, the more I'm not loving the casting choice. It could've been a surprise in a "wow Doom is masked who's doing that voice" kinda way but you don't throw millions of dollars at an actor to be cute about that kind of thing, it's a PR move through and through

I can't even view it in a "oh it's like a variant Tony" way because Dr. Doom /=/ evil Iron Man.

The Deadpool film and the Dr Doom news kinda reignited my interest in Marvel again so been watching clips of MCU. There’s a bunch of Disney Plus shows I haven’t watched since not finishing She Hulk…and honestly while I might only be interested in Loki season 2, maybe I’ll give them a shot.

I’m totally interested in rewatching the Guardians trilogy/Christmas special though. Didn’t post my initial thoughts here when I saw Guardians 3, but recall the movie being super solid, and just rewatching some clips again, betting the movie hold up well, the clips I watched did at least; think it it’d be a fun thing to do.

Feel like Harrison Ford not giving a crap is on brand. Admittedly, I haven’t seen Indiana Jones 5, but despite all the crap he gives Star Wars, I never thought his acting was a problem. Might reflect poorly on the script though, but given the rewrites that seemed to have happened I’m not surprised about that either.

Pop culture nerds and low-level journalists are not known for their ability to be flexible and nuanced in how they approached popular media. God knows I've learned that much from twenty-six years on the internet.

I love Harrison Ford's "give no fucks" attitude in interviews. I mean, for this role, he probably had to motion capture a a big red angry monster. "Acting like an idiot for money" seems like a pretty apt description for that lol. And he does stress that he had a ton of fun acting in the film and I fully believe him there. He just didn't take it too seriously, which is completely fine by me.

I personally always kinda cringe when interviewers ask celebrities like Ford super nerdy questions like "Who'd be the anchor being of Earth-616"? Does anybody seriously expected him be that deep into the MCU lore to know what the heck that is supposed to mean? I appreciate actors being honest about their work.

I don't know man, I feel like some of the best actors/acting that I've seen come from the actors being really into the roles they are playing. Just fully immersing themselves in the character, even past whatever the script gives them.
Its why I absolutely love guys like Joaquin and even directors like Tarantino. Or Cavill as geralt.

So I feel if an actor playing a pre-established fictional character that has tonnes of history being into the lore/history of the character and story, just goes to make a much better performance.

Unfortunately we now live in a age where actors are actively told not to seek out the source material and just play it by ear.

Nah, I love people like that.
I like actors that do enough research into their character, I just don't like those that don't do it and is obviously faking it.
Its the people that make PR speeches or give interviews such as "y'know i was such a hugeee fan of video games" or preaching about how that comic book character represents B when really the source material represented more of A. And writers/directors that takes an established franchise that was clearly written a certain way (which was why it became successful) and had to do their own spin on it believing that their own take is better.

God typing this reminds me of that insufferable campaign with the Rock and Black Adam or how whatshisname did that Joker role and was a menace with his own spin of the character.

He still likes acting.

He hates press tours.

Also, some movies he just does for a paycheck and doesn't give a shit about, like Enders Game.

And some movies he got paid almost nothing and clearly loved it like Call of the Wild.

And you can just see it in his face onscreen.

It's entirely possible that with this movie, for the first time in his life, he got to play a big scary monster that just beats people up and he actually enjoyed that change of pace and freedom.

I don't see the Lobo situation as the same DCEU is dead. DCU is a brand new thing. The rumor of Flash starting a new universe and it being DCU was just off. Superman has his own story, Peacemaker has a newer backstory, the world will be a place where heroes have been around for a while.

MCU is a continuing universe and while RDJ as Doom isn't confusing, it is an obvious cheap trick to restore confidence in fans. His character died and they have preached that these newer characters can carry the ship. Fans haven't responded to that well.

Majors was supposed to be that newer rising performer that could help maximize Kang and carry this saga with Sam, Carol, Peter, Strange, etc. I get scrapping Majors, but grabbing RDJ shows the lack of confidence they have in the other performers.

MCU didn't have their most popular to begin with - F4, X-Men, and Spider-Man. They built it off Avengers. Even when Thor and Cap 1 had less than stellar returns than they expected, they didn't really budge. This RDJ move shows they do budge.

Truth be told I have no skin in this game as I’m largely indifferent to the MCU or MCU adjacent stuff.

Unless like I said before this Doom is supposed to be a version of Doom that wound up in the body of his Universe’s body of Tony Stark.

It’s going to be hard to reconcile this.

Lobo at least would have been in super heavy makeup and been completely unrecognizable as the same guy. I have no problem with having the same actor in a franchise twice if one of those times is a super heavy prosthetic or CG character.

Doom... sure if he keeps the mask on the entire time the same applies, but you don't pay RDJ 80 million to have him do a voice over. They're going to show his face a lot. Even if they manage to go most of the first film without the big reveal.

But the fact that they're giving it away two years early instead of saving it for a major shock surprise means they're not going to hide it very long.

Minor issue. Doom being the big bad for a saga kinda makes it hard for main universe Doom in the future. Now he's like a roaming, lingering villain. Almost like Loki. That isn't a major issue because Doom has functioned that way in the past. He is a threat either way.

Something just feels of about this. Usually the other universe character is not as consequential unless they have a character arc through multiple phases like Nate Richards/Kang in this film universe.

Krasinski as Reed fits because it is what they don't want to do, but fans wanted. It works as a quick throwaway move like some of the Deadpool 3 cast.

Different Atlas than the post-Timely/pre-Marvel one though a lot of its employees were former Marvel people. It shut down in the '70s and was brought back a few years ago apparently for the purpose of trying to license out its characters,

Looks like Devilina was a pulp comic magazine along the lines of Vampirella that lasted all of two issues in the '70s so it's a really bizarre choice for a major studio to make a film out of.

There's nothing wrong with that if it's what you're looking for, but then don't get upset when the studio focuses on making that their priority in movies. Why focus on good storytelling when you can make billions putting multiple Spider-Men in a movie if that's what fans are willing to pay for?

You can say all this but it really doesn't mean anything when you're not going to specifically call out a fan who is doing all these things. "Fans will.." is such a nebulous thing to say. Yeah, there's millions of fans who all have differing and constantly shifting views, of course this shit is going to be inconsistent.

Anyway, I think the MCU stuff sucks and I'm glad I don't pay to see that shit. Small, one-off individual traits that might be fun don't make for good movies. I've felt the same way about Star Wars my entire life.

I personally love the Marvel movies, okay not all of them there’s like 40 now, but when they hit good they hit real good, the Avengers in particular are my favorite movie franchise

Granted I’ve been a huge Avengers fan long before the MCU was ever a thing so I’m a bit biased but I love the MCU, even if the last few years haven’t been so great for them, I’ll continue to go see the movies

More than anything with a superhero movie I want to be entertained. That doesn't necessarily require Oscar-level writing (though it helps if it has it). Are the fight scenes awesome? Do the characters resonate and make me care about them? Is it funny? Is the villain fucking awesome?

If the answer is yes, then it works. Even if that movie has tons of cameos and pop culture. One of the biggest problems with Captain Marvel was I ended up not really liking her, the only people I cared about in that movie were Fury and the cat.

To be fair bad storytelling is a feature not a bug of almost anything Marvel related. But people seem to be more forgiving of that where the comics are concerned as opposed to other mediums.

You can't paint everyone with the same brush. Different people like different things.

I could give a list of all the Marvel films I liked or disliked but there's no point in that. I think there's a handful of truly great films, a handful of really bad forgettable one, a bunch in the middle, and several that I can say are good movies but aren't for me. And that varies even within the same franchises! I like some of the Deadpool or Guardians movies more than the others, and they had the same casts and writers for all three films in their respective trilogies.

There's a sweet spot in there that blends the story, the character stuff, the comedy, the action. And everyone has their own particular level of what they look for and want. With like 40 movies now some are going to hit people's sweet spots differently than others.

People can want more plot and character development, and they can ALSO want to have fun, it's a balancing act.

Deadpool/Wolverine was a little too much in comedy fanservice direction for my taste. It was built to give you exactly one thing and it delivered on that one thing very well. But I don't need to see it again in full either, probably just rewatch a couple scenes down the line.

Deadpool 3 as a one time sugary sweet is fun and amusing. But it wouldn't be good if ALL Marvel movies were exactly that tone going forward. Even Deadpool 4 shouldn't be the same if there ever is one.

That and Star Wars 9 were disappointing, but I could see where there was potential and how it could have been good if one person on staff had been able to suggest something slightly different. The movies weren't good and I'll never rewatch them, but they weren't insultingly wasting my time either.

This was outright bad and insulting and made me feel bad for the actors and there's just no way to fix it without starting over from scratch. The plot, the effects, the "comedy", the "character arcs", the emotional stakes, the editing, the music choices, the lackluster villain who was supposed to turn into THE big threat, the super science robot ants, Modok in his entirety, the massive swathe of secondary characters who I guess were supposed to be importantant but only had 5 seconds of screen time before the big rush at the end where they did things we were supposed to be invested in?
Everything was wrong. There was not a single thing in there where I can go "oh I see why they really wanted to do this scene" or "there was a lot of potential there but..."

Like it felt like there were in-joke memes that they were responding to like "you're just a guy that talks to ants!" and "I'm just a dick!" that without the original joke meme... don't work? At all? Like they were trying to do Deadpool style fourth wall breaking but it just didn't register or work in any way because the guy writing the comedy just wasn't funny.

The director was the same for all three movies so it probably wasn't their fault? I looked up the writer and their only credits are Jimmy Kimmel, and the fourth season of Rick and Morty, which was the worst season by far. That... probably explains it.

WHo thought it was a good idea to loop the Welcome Back Kotter theme for minutes at a time? TWICE? Yeah its a happy upbeat song but the lyrics don't fit anything at all. Maybe it's just because I actually know the song, it's lyrics and the context that it felt really badly placed to me? It's no Immigrant Song or Like a Prayer (epic version) to be sure.

Or to cut the BEST and most memorable character in the Ant-Man franchise, Luis?

Just a miss on every possible level and it's both good and unfortunate that it was the last Marvel thing I caught up on because man, THIS is the reason the Marvels flopped. How well franchises do is partly based on how good the movie before them was and after this utter piece of garbage, I can see a LOT of people saying "I'm not watching any more of these. I'll make an exception for Guardians 3 and Deadpool 3 but then I'm done."

Like, even if Jonathan Majors hadn't gotten into trouble forcing them to change their Kang plans, the absolute utter disaster of this film would have. No one would have wanted to see more of this loser after this. That may be why Loki made a point of hyper wrapping things up instead of trying to build him into an even bigger threat.

Also, final petty note, at the end when I realized they chose that dumb title because quANTuMANia is just... oof.
