Cowboy Bebop

Pls be good ,pls be good >:)
-
Early photos look good. Actors are good. Yoko Kanno is doing the music.
Do we dare have hope for this one?
-
That dog is clearly the sign of perfect casting. This adaptation is going to be fine.
-
Uh, Cowboy Bebop isn’t in any of those pictures, neither is his computer! It’s trash already.
-
Do we dare have hope for this one?
Only if the Tank! Soundtrack hits my hears as soon as I click on it.
-
looks like shit
.. -
I'll wait to watch it, but he doesn't seem to have that Spike swagger.
-
Tomorrow Studios is doing this as well. Never could get into this 1. Tenchi Muyu, Inuyasha, FMA and the one with the blonde haired, red jacket shooter were misses. I knew it was time to turn CN off when those came on. Maybe the live action improves it. I'll give it a try. Worst case scenario, I get a good laugh.

Tenchi Muyo is a bit of a niche and InuYasha has its issues, but you didn't like Cowboy Bebop, FMA, OR Trigun?
That's… something.

I see Spike, Jet, Faye, and an adorable corgi, but where the fuck is Ed?

Ed appears only from session 9 forwards, while the other three are introduced in the first 3 episodes. Let them make it a mystery.
The thing I want is Kareem to appear on the Ein session. -

My thoughts exactly! The best character and always overlooked…

I'll say there was far more boring and outright terrible shit on Adult Swim especially in the first five years of it's existence.
Will say though Tenchi Muyo originally aired on Toonami and was just thrown on there I guess before the TV rights ran out or whatever. Of course the version they aired would be the edited version.

Home Movies.
That show was such a good sleep aid.
-
Home Movies.
That show was such a good sleep aid.
Well who here among us hasn't gone to sleep watching a movie :ninja:
Meanwhile here's Pilot Candidate joining the large list of 00's animes demonstrating how companies just licensed whatever.
-
Pilot Candidate… What a throwback. I remember watching it because Yu Yu Hakusho was airing on the same Adult Swim block. Terrible show which i think finished on a cliffhanger.
-
I remember Yu Yu Hakusho if only because I wound up dozing off the sleep the night the show debuted on the block which royally pissed me off (I think I also missed the 2nd episode because forgot it was coming on) and since they didn't do encore's on the block originally I was fucked. And then after investing all that time to watch everything up to the four saint beast arc they moved it to the saturday Toonami where it got edited and after sitting through the Dark Tournament arc they shut down the block or before, forget which they moved it to a death slot where I never watched the remaining episodes.
-
Yeah, Yu Yu Hakusho had a rough go of it. Did they even air the final arc?
Well, at least I was finally able to buy the blu-ray and finally watch all of it a while back.
-
Yeah, Yu Yu Hakusho had a rough go of it. Did they even air the final arc?
They did eventually but it was in an insanely horrendous time slot, like 4AM or something.

5 or 5:30 AM Eastern Time on Saturdays

I agree but it might look better in motion but they don't look too bad I wish they had gotten a younger Spike tho
-
I'm hopeful for John Cho as Spike. I mostly know his comedic stuff but he always nails the dramatic moments in those and I hear he also has experience in other dramas.
So I'm expecting him to bring that smooth swagger for the lighter moments, with great transitions to the serious ones. Not familiar with the other actors though.
-

Its not that bad, in the anime SPike is 27, and John Cho is… FORTY NINE?!?
Okay, that is a lot. He don't look it tho.
-
I believe it did but this one is a tie in for the Netflix show.
-
Might watch this out of curiosity, but that's it. My expectations are zero.
Actor choices aside, if they even remotely manage to emulate the feel and the style, and Yoko Kanno being involved helps greatly, it will be a job well done. As far as anime adaptations go, I mean. The bar is not set very high.

That's… just edited to leave Edward out for now, right? That shot at the end where its three squares with a huge space for a fourth... that's just for now, right?
It certainly looks like a thing and that they'll be reusing some very specific episodes at the very least.
-
Looks kinda cosplay-ish. Wish it were doing its own thing instead of trying to emulate the original to this degree. Still morbidly curious to see what the actual show is like.

That's what it looked like to me, the space is there for her square and it's kinda long between the third character's square and the title showing up. I expect she'll show up later and is just being kept as a surprise for now.
-
Well, that was a nice fan-made video, now where's the real thing?
…......Oh.
-
There's obviously passionate folks involved that respect the property. They're trying. But recreating the opening shot for shot only highlights the weaknesses more.
And if you're going to directly recreate shots and scenes, color grade them a little a least. This took me less than a minute in photoshop.
They of course, DIDN'T recreate the actual shot there so the composition is worse. In the original the stain glass isn't the focal point, and they're against darkness so you can clearly see their silhouette…. But I get why they moved the angle.
It's like when the live action Lion King recreated Circle of Life and every single frame looked worse than the original despite being "realistic. -
I have a feeling this is just going to be another Gus Van Sant's Psycho or Zack Snyder's Watchmen.
-
Probably.
But we're not the taget audience for this. Anime fans are going to hate the live version no matter what. This is the gateway drug for general audiences that think all cartoons are for kids or are stupid comedies, that you can never convince to try an anime.
-
that's my fear about Sandman as well, but after watching Good Omens I'm letting myself put some faith out there
-
Sandman was never about hyper kinetic specific visuals, it was always about the writing. It had great artists on it, yes, but it was always about the words. It'll adapt fine to other mediums. The audio plays are insanely good.
-
I'm going to give the show a chance. Man, the live action version of Pierrot Le Fou looked really scary in his one moment in the opening. Also it's nice to see couple of my favorite episodes of Bebop might be adapted into the live action show (Which are Ballad of the Fallen Angel and Cowboy Funk.).
-
One thing that ight be interesting, if they choose to actually address it, is the actor playing Spike is almost 50. While the guy playing Jett is 45. The actresses playing Faye and Julia are in their early 30's.
Now, it's incredibly common in Hollywood for older men to be paired with younger women. And they're certainly going to pretend Spike is younger than the actor, and pitch him as mid 30's probably.
But what if they lean into him being older? In the anime Jett was his senior by about a decade, (And only 36!) here they'll be peers. And the girls much younger.
A much much older Spike though? THere could be material there, if they choose to actually make use of it.
-
I actually forgot Jet was in his mid 30’s despite looking like he was in his mid late 40’s.
-
Despite just looking like a fan-video, keeping Tank! was a wise choice. Nothing beats Tank!.

That's what I'm desperately hoping. But at least Ein is there. No Ed would be sad, but no Ein is unforgiveable.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
And of course there's already a side-by-side comparison:
Yeah, it's decent, but still can't beat the original. One of the comments made a good point that one of the great things about the original is that there are no hints to the plot(s) at all in it, it's just about great visuals and atmosphere. The new one sadly shows a bit too much.
-
I cannot believe they're doing the Clown episode.
-
Looks at the Joker popularity - The Clown Episode is a in.
-
Tongpu and the Teddy Bomber being in the intro surprised me since those are later in the show's run than most of the other clips. Are they deliberately showing those episodes where Ed didn't have a focus no matter how late in the show's run it was?
Oh, wait, Ed had a big part in Brain Scratch. Huh.
That's a weird selection now that I think about it; Pierrot le Fou I get since it was one of those episodes that sticks with you but Cowboy Funk is an odd one to reference that way. I'd think most people would remember it for Andy rather than the Teddy Bomber.
-
Apparently there's more than one season, so maybe they're just waiting for season 2 for Ed?

I guess I’m not most people.

-Shrug- I like it. It looks fine and just doing it's own thing. A little cheap looking and stilted in some areas, but it still carries that energy. So it shows a few clips from some episodes, not like it really giving away context to newcomers. It does look a little odd with Ed not there but then again she wasn't really in the old opening much (the hand shadows and the portrait near the end), so I'm guessing this is just a hold off. And yes yes, the original opening was stylish and subtle. But that the reason I like this version too, it's different. Sometime it doesn't need to be completely one for one cause you remember between the two versions. Sure it doesn't always work (like the U.S Death Note) but hey that's the dice you roll when going live action. Either way it's got my attention, let see if the show can pull it off. Also a reminder this is the same studio doing the One Piece live action so…yeah.
-
Actually felt cringe watching it. The hell did they shoot it with? Some of those wide angle scenes look like they were shoot with a 14mm lens, like the one I use on my camera for landscapes and nightscapes. Certainly an interesting and weird choice for moving scenes.
This feels like the difference in tone between Batman the Animated Series and Batman tv show with Adam West, lol. Judging by the looks of these few scenes we've seen in the opening, of course. Maybe it's just a poor representation of the actual content. Adding scenes from episodes is, obviously, not the best choice for a show such as this. Is it oriented towards the old fans, who know every episode by heart to hype them, or the people who never watched it? The first ones are likely to check it out anyway, and the newbs won't even know what they're looking at. It's not like any of the sneak peeks showed breathtaking action snippets, or some fascinating interplanetary scenery…They would have done better making it as more of a music video, with characters just doing their thing like in the anime, regardless of what goes on in the show. Just make it different enough from the show so it's not translated frame by frame.
Nothing I've seen is making me even slightly optimistic, ffs.
Btw, saw a YT comment saying they should have just casted a German shepherd as Ein, since everyone else looks so different, lmao.
-

The folks involved are clearly actual fans of the work, and that's reason to be optimistic.
That doesn't assure quality in any way, but it does indicate effort and appeciation for the source material… which already puts it miles ahead of the live action Dragonball where the writer literally never read or saw the source material, or the American Death Note where the only thing they went off of was the names, or everyhthing we've heard about the wnnabe adapatation of Akira that have gone nowhere.
It's NOT just a shameless cash grab, so there's some hope to have.
Battle Angel Alita nailed it 12000%, so it's not impossible to adapt an anime/manga to live action.

I can't believe live action humans don't look exactly like anime characters, how is that even possible???
