Kiss him, Kacchan! Break the rules!
My Hero Academia II - A true Hero

The chapter itself was good, but I kinda wish that depressed Deku had more screentime or at the very least that Horikoshi gave us a little Dekuless arc for class A that would lead to them facing Deku.
That aside, I am hoping Deku tries to run away, only for the rest of the class to appear and stop him from doing so. Dunno about how, things like Iida matching his speed or Tokoyami´s dark shadow catching him.

Same feelings here. I'm liking this development but him being rescued so soon feels rushed. BUT I'd rather have it rushed than drawn out. I'm curious what Stain's role in this will be, with him witnessing Deku's decline the previous chapter it feels like we're building up to a rematch where Stain remind him of what a hero's supposed to be.
And having his classmates catch him would be amazing, especially if their teamwork manages to overpower each of his quirks, proving to him that teamwork can overpower anything (including All for One).
-
! "Guys it's not a phase I have to be a dark and edgy loner vigilante because my huge Messiah Complex don't let me accept that people willingly helping me can get injured."

! Holy fuck, it looks like you're going to get your wish!
I'm excited. -
Vigilantes 105
! Koichi quick on his feet and Toshinori being oblivious.
-
-Vig Talk-
THIS is how Koichi wins. Just by surviving. I love it. Also love No. 6 (through "O'Clock) acknowledging Koichi as the better speedster. It's gonna drive him crazy (well more crazy) he can't kill Koichi the longer the fight goes.
I liked the revelation All Might isn't coming to save Naruhata. This is all about the Vigilantes. They're taking No. 6 down! Including Knuckleduster who has to do the "I'm Here" when he finally appears.

Knock it off Nectar, we both know that Mr. Oguro is a goner.

Hey, somebody took those brass knuckles out Koichi's house. And with Captain Celebrity busy getting ready for his movie debut, it's all up to Knuckles to help his speedy friend.

Deku is a dick

Ah, I missed these kids. And the principal.
-
Pretty good chapter, it´s nice seeing the whole class together again, looking foward to the next one.
I really liked how Uraraka and Iida are getting more screentime, makes me hope they remain relevant until the end, I remember fondly when they them and Deku used to be the relevant trio.
Also, someone said on another side that Bakugou leading class A to fight against Deku may remind Midoriya of the days where Bakugou and his other classmates bullied him for being quirkless, so maybe this may make the situation worse.
-
Deku's not exactly at his physical best. The Class should be able to stop him, but I'll be interesting to see just have violent Deku is willing to get.
Considering the state Deku's in now, this is AFO's best chance at capturing him. Things could easily take a turn for the worse. -
I love these dang kids. The character growth on display from Bakugo, Shoto, Iida, Ochaco, and heck, even Mineta is really heartwarming, and Bakugo is totally right about All Might and Deku forming a very dangerous positive feedback loop.
I doubt we'll see a full-on brawl next week but it should be fun nonetheless.
-
Momo's here, that means the rest of the class is going to lose in a screwjob.
Izuku will look at the mangled bodies of 1-A and think "but I don't feel like I won!!!"
-
I'm gonna injure you guys so I can prove that don't let you guys get involved into muy fight to avoid you guys getting hurt was the right choice.
-
Deku-papa needs to show up to end his son's abandonment issues.
-
I was considering dropping this because I don't care about gritty Deku, please let the kids put some sense into him.
-
I really like that page with Urakara where she went let's force the school's hand because we as students have power.
This is nice, at least, I think it's nice for Japanese readers born in a collectivist culture to see this.
That's actually pretty sweet and a right direction to go in. This was one my favourite chapters in a while and largely because Horikoshi acknowledges the problem of All Might as a character and don't try to brute force it.
This was nice. -
Midoriya in that last page looked very monstrous.
Now, if his classmates can overwhelm him despite OFA, it will prove my point that being able to use quirks with similar workings doesn't automatically make you better than heroes that have been honing up theirs since day one.

I mean he's also severely tired and weaken while the others are fresh so I dont think it proves much on that front.

I mean in the quirk department. I know that Deku's exhausted, but he should still be able to set a escape route through combining his quirks: Smoke Screen first, then Black Whip, then Float. That should be plenty, but Class-A will eventually prove superior because they are together in this, while he's all by himself. Their teamwork will prove too much for Deku to handle alone and he'll have no choice but get serious, moment Bakugou will step in.
-
Deku about to get some sense knocked back into him one way or another. And I just love how menacing he looks with his worn-down hero outfit, getting some real good Stain vibes from him. Speaking of Stain, maybe he will show up to help stopping Deku after the latter bulldozes though most of the class, who knows? Next couple chapters should be interesting for sure!

The SEVENTH popularity poll in 7 years?
Truly an author that does not trust himself and HAS to know who the readers like.
I get it, those past early cancellations gave him issues, but…
-
it really messes up the plot and flow of the story by extending/inserting characters in arcs were they shouldn't be.
-
Do authors themselves typically request popularity polls? Seems like the kind of thing WSJ would mandate instead.
-
Do authors themselves typically request popularity polls? Seems like the kind of thing WSJ would mandate instead.
Yet One Piece has had 7 popularity polls in 24 years. Other series don't get a yearly popularity poll for seven straight years. I really doubt it's a coincidence.
-
Dr. Stone and Black Clover has both had essentially annual character polls. WSJ has run polls more frequently for their most popular besties over the last few years.
Seems rude to accuse Horikoshi is all.
-
So you really thing that Shindo appearing in this arc has absolutely nothing to do with his odd placement in the last poll?
And besides his relevance in the Kamino incident, all the spotlight that Beast Jeanist got after he peaked in the 4th poll. -
So you really thing that Shindo appearing in this arc has absolutely nothing to do with his odd placement in the last poll?
And besides his relevance in the Kamino incident, all the spotlight that Beast Jeanist got after he peaked in the 4th poll. No, of course popularity polls play a role in which characters show up more frequently. I'm just saying it seems unnecessarily mean to put the frequency of the popularity polls on Horikoshi.
-
Dunno, Shindo got like a one-chapter appearance where he got his shiny butt kicked, it seems more like a small gesture than changing the story too much, like I don´t really care who Muscular had to beat before Deku appeared.
Shinso was also pretty popular, but he appeared rather late and his comeback was pretty much foreshadowed even before the first ranking.
Also, Uraraka and Iida got pretty high positions on the first couple of ranking and that didn´t seem to help them at all, so I don´t believe the rankings affect the overall story that much.
-
The issue is that I don't expect Oda to change his writing plans based on Carrot being 8th and Boa in 7th in the poll but I expect Hori to wiggle the story in detriment of the world building to accommodate more space for more popular characters.
-
Shindo was popular, and yet that translated into a chapter of him getting beaten to a pulp by Muscular, and after that he hasn't been seen again. You can hardly call that "accommodating". And then there's Bakugou, totally absent during the Yakuza arc despite toping the polls. At this point I can't help but think some people will go to absurd lenghts to look down on Hori.
-

Trafalgar Law though?
-
Going this hard on Horikoshi for a simple popularity poll is absurd. And if we're going with the comparisons to One Piece, there's been plenty of people pointing out that Nami got a lot of spotlight after the World Poll dropped.
And I mean… if an author sees that a character is popular is there anything wrong with them including them more? I get it if the character keeps stealing spotlight, gets shoved in where they don't belong and alters the story in negative ways to keep them in, but I've never felt that kinda thing from this series. Instead we get moments like Jiro getting some time to shine during the sports festival.
-
I feel maybe he would just find the polls fun to illustrate. He doesn't have to stick to hero themes. And they really don't seem to affect the story like others have said.
Spoilers for incoming chapter.
! I'm glad the kids are telling Deku what needs to be said. His biggest flaw is thinking the other kids have to be protected. Yes some are useless. But they're all in the same course. They'd run into danger regardless and removing AFO and Shiggy from the equation doesn't guarantee a smooth ride in the future. AFO seems pretty content with letting Deku wear himself down.
! I'm betting All Might has Deku's mom in the car. Might be the 2nd time we get to see someone defeated by their mom lol -
We has an entire ARC based around putting a spotlight on Shinso because he did well in one of the first polls.
The issue is that I don't expect Oda to change his writing plans based on Carrot being 8th and Boa in 7th in the poll but I expect Hori to wiggle the story in detriment of the world building to accommodate more space for more popular characters.
Law is a semi-offical strawhat who has been in half the series, and Marco of all people is in the current arc. Oda absolutely accommodates the polls. He won't drastically change the series over them, but he will shoehorn in characters.
Dr. Stone and Black Clover has both had essentially annual character polls. WSJ has run polls more frequently for their most popular besties over the last few years.
Seems rude to accuse Horikoshi is all.
One piece has had 7 polls in 24 years. Naruto had 7 polls in 15 years. Bleach had 9 polls in 15 years. Hunter X Hunter had 3 in the first 8 years it was actually running. Dragonball only had 2 in 11 years, both from near the end. Bakuman had 1 poll in 4 years. I think Assaasin Classroom only had 1. Demon Slayer and Promised Neverland had 2 in 4 years.
If it was editorial mandate don't you think the most popular series would have them more often? They very often DO time in with big announcements like "an anime is coming!" so there's some editorial at work there.
It really does seem like a confidence check sort of thing. Of course, given OP's latest was a big worldwide event THING…
-
Macro and Law placement make sense though.
You don't even have to look at who Hori shines the spotlight on but rather who he doesn't shine it on.
Early arcs had Froppy see relevance and even a nice character arc, now she's barely making top 20 and you don't even see her having more than one speech bubble per arc.
Same thing for Tokoyami who should have clearly been more relevant and involved seeing how he worked under Hawks and I was even expecting Mineta to have some significant growth over the series.Him not putting Bakugou in the Overhaul saga doesn't mean much when Froppy and Urakara didn't even get screentime.
But eh, where does the line blur between whether he is pandering to his audience or whether he has the capability to develop the whole class.
Nami is pretty much the unspoken female lead in OP and as much as we want to believe that role is shared by Robin, it just isn't simply because she was a lot more involved even before the popularity poll dropped.
Oda also constantly shine the spotlight on Franky despite him suffering (relatively speaking) in the polls. Vivi is super popular and appears once a decade
Kinemon isn't particularly popular but get's a lot of screen time and his purpose in the plot is always a strong one.Oda is also a lot more experienced and have a great grasp on how to make a character popular and he has pulled this off numerous times. He's clearly have more control on which characters turn out more popular than Horikoshi.
And that's not even a debate considering how Hori's Deku keeps jobbing to Bakugou because if he had the ability to make him more popular, he would have by now. -
Ok Bakugo didn't beat Deku way back in chapter 120 something because he was more popular. There's a difference between writing more plotlines for popular characters and making the entire character arcs of two of your main characters dependent on their popularity. Bakugo beat Deku there because it worked better thematically and it contributed to their respective growth.
And frankly, any effects of the "popularity driven spotlight" have been mostly natural or unobtrusive. Shindo shows up to get his ass kicked. So what? We get to see other schools trying to deal with villains and in shows off how far Deku has come. We're focusing on pro heroes like Best Jeanist more now that the threat has escalated? Gee, we've never seen that before in a shonen.
Horikoshi very much knows how to make a character popular. You think Hawks wasn't meant to be instantly likeable? And on the flip side, Iida's been the top ten of literally every poll and he rarely gets any spotlight.
-
Ok I might've been a wee too hard, but at this point the accumulation on writing choices Hori took that I don't agree over the series plus the current direction that last 2-3 arcs took make me really his capability to use the rooster of characters he created instead of a few select dozens.
I can say I find Vigilantes to be a more cohesive story and with better character interactions. -
More leaks…lol.
! cracks me up that Deku says he did this to spare his friends. But it's like…Dude you've been in.the hospital way more than anyone else. And you're running on fumes now. Would be hilarious if All Might, his mom, Aizawa and his dad showed up and said "okay you need a time out."
-
I wonder if Deku will be forced into an intervention to confront his feelings of inferiority that stem from his years without a Quirk? Obviously there's some deeply rooted psychological trauma at play here preventing him from recognizing his self-harm.
-

Honestly, I think this is more All Might's influence than anything else.
His and Izuku's character arcs are not very different. We know All Might burned bridges with many people because he felt he had to shoulder everything.
In fact, I would say its more arrogance than inferiority complex, as if he didn't trust anyone to keep up with him. It's very different from the beginning, where he considered everybody better than himself because they had Quirks since babies.

Ah, well, I based that idea off of All Might having the same issue but also I feel that Deku probably does feel like he has to do everything himself because he's traumatized. Something I know from experience is that people are 'people pleasers' more so often than not because we're trying to desperately stave off a withdrawal of affection.

Dicku the Messiah can't accept help.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009586 -
Izuku is right most of the students are useless they should stay in school.
-
In before Uraraka kisses Deku back to his senses!
-
I really feel like they should have killed off a bunch of student in class A and B as well as having a few traitors among the students reveal themselves at some point. There are enough decent designs and characters overall, but a lot of them are pure filler just take up space. Up the stakes by killing off the fodder, concentrate the worthwhile characters in one place and give most of them reasonable investment into the main plot like avenging their friends, bringing justice to the traitors, etc.
-
Pretty good chapter, I liked most of the callbacks, even some of the new ones we didn´t actually see back then (perhaps some are from the novels, but I wouldn´t bet on it) And it seems some people online are dissapointed about Deku not trying to fight his schoolmates, pretty weird that they thought that made sense at all.
Looking foward to Iida and Ochako´s moments, I am guessing that one of those two will be the one to make Deku "give up"
Also, I forgot to say this before, but I wonder if Stain coming back means that Iida will get more proper screentime after this mini-arc is over.
