I always assumed Foxy would get absorbed into Buggy's crew, but I guess not.
But, not only has Foxy not shown up in the manga again, Oda let the anime have carte blanche to do filler with him… something Oda just usually doesn't allow if he has a plan to bring someone back later.

Well, Davy Back Fight does takes its name from Davy Jones, not only a famous name in the real world, but also someone who was mentioned in OP as some sort of great legend from the pirate history. And if I'm not mistaken, it's even said that the game was created in a place like the "island of pirates", which has lead to some recent theories that it was invented in Beehive/Fullalead Island.
So I guess it's very possible that the DBF will be at least mentioned again.

If losing is a possible outcome, then Luffy is betting his crewmates' lives every arc. Much higher stakes, actually. That's something they understood once they decided to becomes pirates striving to be PK.

Regarding your description, it's a good way to explain what the DBF is, but it's also playing with words to distinguish things which are quite similar in a practical level. There's nothing romantic about a "proper no-holds-barred brawl" when it doesn't have a moral cause, because it's also risking his crewmates' lives as something expendable.
The nature of the Strawhats' relationship is different compared to BB's and Rocks', because they are friends and family, which is something more valuable than a "chip". However, we can't deny that they're assets that Luffy gathers at the cost of risking their lives. And that's the game they're playing all the time. They didn't need to become pirates.
When it comes to the DBF itself, I can imagine Luffy turning it down for the reasons you're suggesting… but the opposite seems more likely to me. In fact, I believe that Luffy would regard the game as some sort of pride between pirates.
Of course, he wouldn't play it for nothing. He would do it only if the reward was worth the stakes, in order to get something from the other crew. Maybe a person, maybe an object.
Not participating in another DBF would mean Luffy doesn't trust his and his crew's strength, and acknowledges the possibility of losing.
I think he'll be more cautious about it and not accept it as fast as the first time, but he would do it again.
In the first DBF Luffy was oblivious to the fact that there are pirates that might play dirty, but he knows better now.
It would be a great sign of his growth to Shanks if they would have a DBF, and Shanks using some dirty trick to test Luffy, but Luffy not falling for it.
Besides, there has to be a conflict between Usopp and Yasopp, I can't see them meeting after all this time and Usopp just forgiving Yasopp for leaving them.
So, a DBF could be a valid option to test the Strawhats.

Gin is one of those things where readers all tell themselves "he's GOTTA show up again at some point!" and make a big deal about it and hype themselves for years and its one of those things that gets added to "to do " checklists that would pad the series out for years longer… but its really not needed.
That said, Gin can just be dropped in at any time, same as Bellamy was. He wouldn't need a lot of story space, just acknowledgement he survived the poison.

If Shanks took it from FMI, hid it on an island that's not easy to find, full of traps and strong creatures (like on Rusukaina, but next level :ninja:), they would first have a DBF for the location and after that the Strawhats would have to get to the Poneglyph on the island.

Funny thing is that the island Sengoku mentioned where the Rocks Pirates were founded is possibly the same island where the Davy Back Fight game originated. Makes one wonder.

I really hate the idea of Oda cutting corners off his story, little things I can take, but big plot points like level 6 prisoners and Weeivel just feels wrong, I understand Oda is tired and has been writing the same series for nearly three decades, but still I love this series so much that imagining Oda leaving out details that I'm sure I would absolutely love just leaves me heartbroken

Gin is a sacrifice of early One Piece at best, i really do not see him ever being relevant, especially at this point.
Lvl6 escapees was mentioned once again in Dressrosa, i doubt it has been forgotten but if Oda really is cutting corners, i could imagine it being among the things that fall under the table.

The focus of the game is on crewmates, but it's fair to say that anything could be chips in a DBF. The winner chooses whatever he wants as long as he's willing to lose anything too. The ultimate all-in game. But while you can include anything to the prize pool, it would be a disgrace to forbid the trade of crewmates. Luffy might accept the game to take an object, but the opponent can choose a person.

I could even see Big Mom turning on the beast pirates if they hurt or capture Tama

Gotcha. That makes sense. Basically Tama taking on the role of a benevolent Streusen, without having to use her devil fruit.

Unfortunately there is already a Ginrummy in the Beasts Pirates. I think if he appeared as the "original" Gin it could be cool, but that would necessitate Ginrummy having been an important character or some finagling.

I think Shanks may appear in Wano during the epilogue (act 5) to compliment Luffy, kinda like Garp appeared in the Enies Lobby epilogue.
The Reverie mini-arc seems to establish they will meet pretty soon, and I feel this will be the perfect moment, since, once next saga begins, I doubt there will be time for a reunion, and Blackbeard will fight and defeat Shanks in it.
Shanks will probably reveal where the last poneglyph is (Elbaf is my bet), but their reunion will be cut short once Luffy learns about what's happening in the world and has to leave.
(Maybe Shanks even invites Luffy to go to Elbaf to challenge him and his crew for the Poneglyph, but then we get the Mary Geoise/Vegapunk arcs first, and when we finally arrive in Elbaf Blackbeard has already been there.)

Tama feels more distant at this point than Aisa at Skypiea. I’m not sure about a little kid like her getting into a physically hectic battle. I don’t really recall many times where elementary-level kids have fought in battles in this series. I suppose it would be like Chimney’s role at Enies Lobby in that Tama briefly helps out taming the Gifters, more or less like how Chimney saved Luffy from drowning.

I never meant that Luffy would give the hat back. Instead, I think Shanks will challenge Luffy to go to Elbaf and defeat the Red Hair Pirates there, only then he will accept the hat. But when we get to Elbaf, Shanks is already defeated.
I just think Shanks and Luffy will briefly meet once. However, Blackbeard will off Shanks, leaving their promise unresolved.

Well, chapter 989 is out.
The last spread is a heavy sign that no one is going to join now, IMO. But, of course, it's not definitive proof. Things can always change, but it did make me more confident that Jinbe is the only new Straw Hat out of the Yonko Saga.
As a Jinbe supporter all these years, it's so gratifying to see him as a cohesive part of the gang like this. Beautiful stuff…
Now, obviously I would have been even more excited if Carrot was in that line-up as well. But not being right there right then isn't a deal-breaker in any way. The fact that she's been with them all the way up to that scene, with no visible exit like Yamato, makes her absence just as conspicuous as her presence would have been.
Carrot could have gone with the other Minks, but she didn't. She could have gone to protect Momo and start becoming one of his new vassals, but she didn't. She's with the Straw Hats, has been constantly all through Onigashima, and she hasn't evaporated just because she wasn't in that last panel.
Here's what I do know: as a character, she would definitely be willing and able to stand alongside them, ready to fight. The fact that she's not just begs the question, what's she up to? She's been there with everyone all this time just for decoration? As a favor to editor Naito? I don't think so.
And of course, Sulong remains a factor. When will she use it, and what for? And will Luffy actually see her do it this time? He never saw Pekoms transform, not even in the anime, and there are no other Minks around. This will be his first time seeing Sulong in action, and it's her chance to show Luffy and the others what she can really do. I really like access timeco's idea of Carrot getting Luffy up to the roof, I can definitely see her skills in and out of Sulong being useful in that regard.
We're at a crossroads, no doubt about it. Either Carrot is going to do something important in this war, or she won't. She'll either earn her spot on the crew, especially in Luffy's eyes, or she won't. But depending on what she does from here on out, her current last-minute absence won't matter in the long run.

I think it is unlikely that Naito has anything to do with it. Oda plans in advance what he plans to do with a character. He doesn't do that in the last minute. I think there is a reason that Carrot is with the straw hats and that it has to do with pedro's last words to her.
