At least we’re getting another Dai’s Adventure anime.

Why is that? Was something announced at Jump Festa?

The Director and team behind Dragon Ball Super is doing a full remake of Dragon Quest: The Adventures of Dai.
Toei is also starting up World Trigger again.

Ooof. Well that's disappointing.
-
I'm actually totally down with a Dragon Quest remake, especially given that for some insane reason the original series never made it here. Take those Toriyama designs and comedy and Dragon Quest world and do something fresher.
I love Dragonball. original and Z, but Super was, at best… fanficcy? However much involvement Toriyama had or didn't have, the entire 130 episode series felt like filler arcs. There were never really any stakes or growth (except briefly during Future Trunk's story) and it all just felt like it was filling time waiting for the actual story to start. Like they're terrified to get to the canon ending of Z where they'd have to age the characters and start actually thinking about what to do about GT, even if its basically overwritten now by default anyway.
Battle of the Gods is the only thing that really truly felt Toriyama-esque. That had his fingerprints all over it including willigness to make the villains GOOFY. The Broly movie as well to a lesser extent, but even with all the backstory stuff and improvement on Broly, the basic character in both design and how his power works in making him a berserker aren't really how Toriyama would typically approach the idea if it was fresh from him.
Everything else? He contributed some designs and maybe some overall ideas, but it just didn't feel like anything.
Especially the 50 episode tournament arc (longer still if you count the gathering and pre-tournament.) Jiren is such a bland forgettable antagonist it took me a moment to even remember his name just now, I was going to leave it as "bald white guy".
I know there's limits when the cast has reached the crazy levels of power that they're at... but the original series hit extremes with Super Saiyan and Freeza, and still managed to up its scale with the androids and Buu while having plot twists and character development. If the leads are too strong, then... use the secondaries?
Or hey, maybe adapt the Reincarnated as Yamcha manga and flesh that out. That'd be fun. Reincarnation animes are hot right now.
-
World trigger from the start or from where they left off? And I am glad that Houshin Engi terrible failure compared to Jojo's huge success is inspiring them to not do the bare minimum for these revivals.
-
It's too bad we might not be getting more anime in a while, but I think if they let a few arcs complete in the manga right now, Super's rough edges could be ironed out very nicely.
I'm 100% a Super defender, but while I think it's not as bad as some people seem to say, I think it's also not as good as it could be and I think the main reason it wasn't as good as it could be was because it had such a horrible schedule and was rushed out. I really do detect care for the series in there, the staff just couldn't realize it.
I think the anime team is capable of much better characterization than the manga.
I think the manga's writing is still too much plotting over actual personality, but now it offers a very solid plot foundation for the anime team to work with. I think what we have in Moro could be absolutely wonderful when given to the much better character writers of the Toei staff.
Moro is a great idea with a good base, the plot elements surrounding Merus are great. The Earth team actually getting some time in was good. Goku and Vegeta both having their techniques to learn, rather than just a straight-up power-up is pretty fresh. That Buu fight and Grand Supreme Kai? It's all good stuff! So many neat little things like seeing more races and the Yardrats having a much bigger technique pool than expected because of Instant Transmission being a beginner technique. Seeing more of Yardrat at all is really cool.
I think it could be improved so much with stronger characterization, though. Moro is really basic. What even is Merus' individual personality, though beyond sort of nice ally? Gohan's fight was just a fight. Goku and Vegeta are their pretty basic selves. I feel like you could have more fun with the henchmen. I think its got the plot points and techniques down, but not quite the character, though, it's leaps and bounds over anything the manga offered before this arc and something I'd actually say is competent, even if flawed, like I call the Super anime.

I dont know why everyone is in such a rush to see more Super, if anything, the fact that they are actually taking their sweet time is GREAT.
Anyway, I agree with Robby… Latin America was crazy for Dai...or Fly as he was known here. I think this is a great decision.

They're not taking their time, though. Scripts aren't being written, storyboards are not being drawn and staff is not being scheduled (as far as we know). This extended gap won't mean anything if the series isn't actually in production.
That said, if it's going to happen it'll happen in April or not at all this year.

Omg Julie! I'm a big fan of your posts. They are awesome. Thanks for responding!

Oh, no problem! I'm looking forward to learning what takes over for Kitarou in April…

They're also overdone.

DQ is coming in October, right? Which I just want to check out for it seemingly wanting to do the 90s aesthetic.
So maybe DB IS coming in Spring after Kitaro. But then again I hear Toei has a bunch of projects again and a bunch of DB's staff is apparently going to DQ.
-
I got one of the Dragon Ball Z double features for X-mas (I got the Movie 7 and Movie 9 set.). With this double feature, it's my first time ever that I got to see the Bojack movie. And I have to say I really enjoy the movie and it can say it's one of my favorite Dragon Ball movies now. I really like the animation for the movie, even before the villians of the movie shows up like the breif Tenshinhan and Trunks fight.
And now I can see why Zangya is an pretty popular character for one of the movie villains. I always like her character design even back in the days that I play Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (Zangya was one of the characters that I usually play as in that game).
-
What other series have really good tournament arcs that aren't solely tournament stories
for example some I can think of are
Yu Yu Hakusho
My Hero Accademia
Naruto
Katoky Hitman Reborn
Negima! Magister Negi Magi
Fairy Tailthat's all I can think of right now how about you guys?

Dai no Daibouken is basically Dragonball with swords and magic, so you'll probably enjoy it a lot.
I've read the whole 37 volume manga and seen the original anime that finally got subbed recently.I'm actually totally down with a Dragon Quest remake, especially given that for some insane reason the original series never made it here. Take those Toriyama designs and comedy and Dragon Quest world and do something fresher.
Although I love Dai, it isn't really that close to the world or writing style of the games.
Dragon Quest: Abel Yuusha fills that niche nicely though, and it's almost fully subbed by some guy on Youtube. -
Looks like it's Digimon that's going to replace Kitaro.
Honestly, get this Moro arc done and then you've (potentially) got two arcs to cover for a new TV series (Broly and Moro) before starting a new series.
Better for everyone, the only trouble still being that when they do get to the point where they want to start a new series that it won't once again fall victim to bad scheduling.
Since the manga is still going I don't buy that they've dropped the idea of doing an anime completely (that or they really are just planning to continue the story with movies).
-

Manga costs almost nothing to create in terms of time or production and can make them a lot of money.
Anime costs a lot to make and needs a lot of people.
Just because one is being worked on doesn't mean the anime is too. new movie every two years might be all they need for the franchise.
-
I feel like it would be odd if they wouldn't want to take advantage one of their biggest cashcows. Even after Super is done, DB is still the biggest money-maker for Toei
(or perhaps they go with the strategy of riding the wave since it is still making money).Movies are also one way to continue making money.
Both of the "endings" (Broly and ToP) feel pretty inconclusive to me, too. GT got a conclusive one because they really didn't seem to want to do any more of it.
I still continue to find the hate around Super really strangely overblown. I think at worst it's toy commercially boring (see Jelly Vegeta), at best genuinely entertaining and fun (all the Ultra Instinct stuff, bunch of the new characters, the slice of life episodes).
I actually got around to reading some of the original manga and I don't really get what's so much more special about it?
I particularly read the Saiyan Saga and I guess the art is cool, but the most interesting parts of that story arc turned out to be filler.
Gohan's training felt unearned and Piccolo's turn was really sudden without any of the connective tissue the anime added (and I thought it felt a little sudden in the anime, too). I thought it was neat that Goku denied his heritage in the anime and the Saiyan lore wasn't there, either (tho I know Toriyama gave input to the anime for that).
Tenshinhan and Yamcha were even more poorly treated in the manga. (I still really dislike it that there was no reference to their character arcs, Tenshinhan's character's focal point was never his relationship with Chaozu and damn it, Yamcha went from a bumbling bandit to at least a little bit more serious fighter, but nah). The manga is too quick for me, the anime too slow. But at least Goku vs. Vegeta was still the same. The problem is that the reason why I stuck around was for Gohan.
None of it really touched me emotionally that much probably because I already know the story.
I also sort of scanned around for scenes I was interested in and the manga didn't have Goku apologize when he went down with Cell and Vegeta's growth was even more forced in there. Randomly gets the energy sensing ability. He just sort of gets Super Saiyan. He just sort of is now a good guy cause of Bulma. All bothered me in the anime, but even more glaring in the manga because there are no small filler scenes to connect the tissue.
His arc is a lot more told through dialog than actually shown through his actions.Because there is no "filler" it goes faster, but the flaws in the storytelling really stand out. I can see why you feel like the Cell Saga is really bleak and joyless. I remember the Cell arc for the character arcs and the Cell arc filler came at an extremely good time narratively and alliviated a bunch of that. The Trunks chapter has the DB Minus problem.
Some time ago I also read the Pilaf arc. Toriyama is definitely a better gag/comedic mangaka than he is an action mangaka (or even action writer). I liked the Pilaf arc much more than anything I saw later in the manga.
-
Both of the "endings" (Broly and ToP) feel pretty inconclusive to me, too. GT got a conclusive one because they really didn't seem to want to do any more of it.
I almost guarantee they wanted to do more of it you make 2 other series both of which have 100+ episodes and then you make a 3rd show which is only 64 episodes, then make a 4th series which has a 100+ plus episodes?
Now granted a good portion of those episodes in DB and DBZ were filler but it's not like there was a whole lot of interesting stuff going for a good majority of GT.
-
You can't look at the original and go "oh its missing all the bloat that I liked." That's completely unfair and the wrong way to approach it, especially since you're cherry-picking the filler you like and ignoring the metric ton of garbage. You also can't just jump around skimming for scenes.
Read it all, in order. The pacing and characterization and tone are just better all around, and the fights are way better too..
-
While I don't remember a good 3rd of the manga's fights I do remember being let down by how brisk the Vegetto-Buu fight felt so I wouldn't say "all" the fights were better in the manga.
-
I read the whole Saiyan Saga, in order and did so with the Pilaf Saga, as well aside from looking up specific scenes I care about. They are different points, but I think 70~ manga chapters should be a fair amount of manga to judge.
Wasn't better for me. Just how I feel.
Manga too fast, anime too slow.
Gohan's training is like a few pages or chapter in the manga to like 10 episodes in the anime. It's like from one extreme to another.
-
Again, you're approaching it backwards. You're used to all that excess content there, so you're bothered by its lack, instead of by its bloat. You're mentally cherrypicking the best bits and ignoring the rest. Yeah I miss the episode with Gohan and the robot, and the gang going driving cars too, and I liked the Saiyaman extras, but I don't miss Bulma being turned into a frog or Goku charging the genki dama taking 3 episodes, or literal entire episodes just being recap, or seeing fake namek, or meeting random orphans (twice!) , or the human character fighting fake saiyans in a hologram room, or Piccollo having to take care of great ape Gohan a SECOND time after he'd already blown up the moon, or a contradictory Android creator that wasn't Dr. Gero, or entire tournaments of characters that never appear again, or any of the Garlic Jr. saga, and I don't need to see Goku and Chichi having awful adventures on their honeymoon or Cell spending time making an arena. Sure you get some things like the Super Saiyan transformation or Vegetto vs. Buu that are made better by the anime, but at the same time, if you don't go in thinking about how the anime handled them, the pacing and sudden shock of it is a thing. Like Goku turning Super is a full page splash shot and its on a page turn which isn't the same buildup but its still fully dramatic and cool within its medium.
And for training stuff… its training. We didn't need to see any of it, early dragonball showed all the training we needed, after that only a few panels were ever needed for any arc. Goku is training in rougher gravity, got it. He increased the intensity, got it. Don't need to cut back to that twenty different times and interupt the flow of all the other stuff going on. We don't need to see Yamcha, Tien and Chaouzu training with Kai-O because we already saw Goku doing that training, and nothing comes from them doing it anyway. We don't need to see the cast doing a million pushups or putting on weighted clothing to deliver milk bottles, it was shown, it was done. One character physically pushing themself to get stronger for a year is the same as another. Have to take in the series as a whole, so that when it does shorthand later, you know that's okay because you saw all the longform versions earlier on. You can't just take a random excerpt from the middle... and the Saiyan saga IS the middle.
-
Read it all, in order. The pacing and characterization and tone are just better all around, and the fights are way better too..
The more recent reread I did was from the beginning to the end of Piccolo saga, and I there's one thing Toriyama excels is in paneling fight scenes. Having read most of the Buu saga in manga as a kid I don't think the manga lacks anything done in the anime, in the overall I think it's better since it sticks to the original humor tone of Toriyama.
-
The Saiyan arc had the best filler in the whole series because it was made by people who understand characterization and storytelling instead of just fanboying over their favs Goku and Vegeta.
-
Toriyama's panels for his fights are easily the best I've ever seen in comics. My mind is blown every time I read Kuririn versus Piccolo, it flows so effortlessly! I think the only comic I've ever seen match that sort of kinetic flow is some early Naruto or Tonbo Seijun's Festival of Champions fan comic.
-
I think the anime did a lot of boring stuff.
On my recent rewatch I could not continue after episode 95 because it was just so dragged out, but the manga just left no impression on me. It didn't give me any new or different insight to the characters, part of it being that I have seen the story a thousand times.
I read a roughly 50-chapter consecutive story arc (and the 20-chapter Pilaf arc) and I think I get the flow of action scenes pretty nicely, which is what all of you are praising. I guess it's unfortunate my draw to Dragon Ball was it's personality, not it's fight scenes. I think character growth needs to be earned and I don't think a couple of chapters (or even less) of very basic interaction should lead to a sudden redemption moment.
Notice how I never mentioned the action scenes and said that Toriyama's art is super cool. The action is very much nice, extremely nice panelling, great flow, great angles. I guess it's cool as a plot roller coaster with not much thought actually put into characterisation or themes. Not much actual substance - cutting down (the good, not the bad filler, though in a way that too) just brought all the problems I had with the story to begin with (nothing which has to do with pacing of action scenes) out on the forefront because the filler doesn't actually mask any of it, it just gives the illusion of better progress because it takes longer.
Bad pacing of action was never the biggest problem I had with the story. It's a bunch of plot stuff and poorly handled characters. Add to that, where did the fun of the Pilaf arc go? Somehow the Saiyan arc just accentuated how the story wasn't having all that much fun anymore, too.
-

Umm…were you expecting it to? You don't really go from the anime to the manga to get new insights on the characters or story. You read the manga for a brisker, better-paced version of the story and to see Toriyama's art on full display (also, see a few of the gory/risque scenes that Toei had to tone down).
-
No I didn't. My point is that it's the same story.
I think Nappa is still boring, Raditz is still wasted and Goku hitting his head is dumb and the Dragon Balls still take away most of the tension. It has the same substantial problems than the anime except for pace… which has never been my biggest criticism of the story, though I know it's for many people (as I said, I even hit the roadblock of not wanting to continue with the anime, actually, but I can look past that and care much more for the sequence of events and characters).
I always see people say that Z has so much more tension. No it doesn't. If you start with Z, maybe, but if you started with og DB (like me) you are already familiar with the writing style of the story, too. Pacing doesn't remove any of that.
Edit:
If I'd actually rank the ways I've experienced the story, I'd say if the anime's pacing really bothers you, pick up the manga. If it doesn't watch the sub. The old English dub is bad. Kai also seems to fix the pacing a little and has a better English dub. You can follow the story just fine if you start with Z, but not starting with the original Dragon Ball skips a lot of the story, so I'd recommend to actually start there. If you get into the story through video games know that they are mostly just condensed versions of the story and don't represent the whole thing.
-
Origins 2 is probably the only DragonBall game other than Origins 1 that gives you damn near the full story of the specific arc it adapts while adding in some original extra stuff that wasn't in either the manga or anime.
-
Speaking of side characters, the new Super chapter is out and it's nice the Super manga is giving them focus.
When was the last time Yamcha got to be put on the battlefield at all? Having all these henchmen is great because everyone at least gets to do something.
It's really simplistic and all action with not much characterisation in there and can essentially end up having the RoF problem of basically just being filler if this in no way impacts how Moro is defeated, but it's nice to at least have them acknowledged.Like, Gohan's Ki shield technique is really cool and Krillin actually possibly getting a full fight?
-

That's why this series is so awkward for me. Like you want the other characters to get their shine and actually be able to do stuff. But at the same time, their fights feel so inconsequential when it comes down to it. But like you said, it's still nice to see someone like Yamcha do stuff.
-
Did Yamcha just…make short work of three guys? And act confident while doing it? And not being ridiculed? And not being turned into a meme?
Seriously. As little as it was...I'm just so happy right now. Look at him! Acting like a friggin' hero!
On the other hand, they're gonna do a "Roshi battles women and acts like a pervert"...again. Oh, well...
Ed: Ok, in fact, wait a f*cking second here. Direct statement from Yamcha in this chapter "In fact, I'm one of the THREE STRONGEST earthlings around".
Earthlings participating on the ToP: Roshi, Krillin, Tien. That's three. Is Yamcha implying he's stronger than one of them? If we follow Dragon Ball logic, it should be Roshi (of course, as it should always be after the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai), but...Isn't Dragon Ball Super Roshi supposed to be the strongest earthling again? Does Yamcha know that Roshi can duke it out with God Level guys now? That's the only explanation I can think of. Because I know it's Yamcha and he's not the brightest and bla bla bla, but he specifically said "1 of the 3", which is way too specific.
Cause if he is indeed one of the three strongest and this is kind of an apology from the author (-you looked so weak! -well, I'm actually not weak at all! 'wink wink'), then all the jokes and gags about Yamcha being an option to participate in the ToP have been suddenly outdated?
Am I thinking too much about all of this? Yes. But goddammit.
-
Yamcha got pissed about being left out of the tournament so he trained for twenty minutes and that caught him up again.
-
Posted this in the passing thread, but thought this board should know, voice actor Brice Armstrong passed away Jan. 10. He played the narrator in Dragon Ball and Captain Ginyu in DBZ, and I always loved hearing him in those roles.
-
thanks for reminding me Roshi was dodging Jiren’s attacks with his proto-UI.
-
The new chapter of Super was great. I'm happy that both Yamcha and Chiaotzu are back as fighters again. I'm also happy that both 17 and 18 is also involved in this battle as well. I have to say that the Moro arc is becoming my favorite arc of Super, since the arc is reminding me a lot of late Dragon Ball (Piccolo Daimao/23rd World Tournament sagas) to early Z (Saiyan saga).
-
I hope Shida Naotoshi gets to do a Yamcha scene now. If we're going to do fan service we might as well enjoy it, LOL. I'm not happy about Toyo-tarou repeating the formula again and having Gokuu and Vegeta arrive late, though. They should be there but not have there on time and simply not show their fights until the end. Ugh. Hopefully Toyo-tarou will throw us a curve ball and have each of the Earth crew deal a damaging blow on Moro that weakens him by the time that Gokuu and Vegeta return. At least that would give them some lasting effect.
-
This kinda highlights a problem I've had with Super pretty much from the start where they really want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to power levels. I'd rather they just toss the whole concept out altogether but they've been part of the series too long for that to happen.
-

I think the stated reason they took Roshi was wealth of technics instead of power level.
-
Power level was such a weird thing, the whole reason they were made in the first place was to point out how unreliable they are and to not take them to seriously but they ended up making barriers that certain characters just couldn't get across no matter how hard they tried without getting power up bs
In the end they did the opposite of what toryiama intended them for
-

It's so wierd for me to see people say how the anime ToP is mindless action (when I think it actually had some really good character moments and Moro has been kind of lacking in that department) and praise this. I like my simple action and it's even nicer if it's smart and looks cool, but I guess "winning" takes precedence over actual attempts of exploring a character.
Krillin and Gohan lost, for example, but there is a bunch of room to explore them more, have Gohan actually work on that new form he promised or have Krillin work on the overeagerness that got him knocked out. Have Piccolo deal with an opponent being able to pass his hearing or Tenshinhan try to improve his multiform technique. The anime ToP gave a new direction to almost all characters.Yamcha got pissed about being left out of the tournament so he trained for twenty minutes and that caught him up again.
I'll take it. I think it's better than just having characters around just to be there to be defeated. Goku and Vegeta are so far ahead that unless it's a jump to sudden god power (like Roshi, which went really far), it really doesn't matter much.
I think it would actually be cool if Goku and Vegeta arrived only to be defeated again, repetitive in the context of this arc, but everyone else is left to figure Moro out, which DB hasn't really done with a Big Bad. We can see what they've learned in the story coming up, but 73 for example could be used by Gohan and Piccolo and 17 and 18 to figure out Moro's ability.
-

…....The saiyan saga........where he got blown up?

Well that and it be hella fucked up to have someone like Yamcha or Chaotzu beating guys that could easily give guys like Piccolo or Gohan a rough time.
I think it would actually be cool if Goku and Vegeta arrived only to be defeated again, repetitive in the context of this arc,
Not so much repetitive but stupid. Like bad wrestling booking stupid or in more understandable (if you've read Bleach) context "Chad got an amazing powerup…..oh he lost again" levels of stupid.
-
…....The saiyan saga........where he got blown up?
Don't forget the Android arc where he got "penetrated" by Dr. Gero.
-
Not so much repetitive but stupid. Like bad wrestling booking stupid or in more understandable (if you've read Bleach) context "Chad got an amazing powerup…..oh he lost again" levels of stupid.
The problem with that was that Chad never really got to do much and was always teased to actually do something, Goku and Vegeta are the ones that mostly save the day. I think it would be odd in the build-up sense because they met Moro first and were set up to fight him again, but I feel like not too bad considering the focus they have gotten.
I think something like a Saiyan Saga thing wouldn't be bad either where Goku and Vegeta play a role, aren't technically the ones to give the final blow, but contribute to take Moro down. The Cell, U6, Goku Black and ToP arcs had elements of that, too. That's more common. I hope the weakness isn't ultimately something typical for enemies like this like Moro getting too greedy or ultimately still just punching really hard.
Those are the most obvious solutions. 17 and 18 seem like a natural counter, too. Maybe a shield/area that blocks his absorption could work, but said technique is limited and thus relies on smart energy management. I'm still not really sure how Ultra Instinct could help here.
-
For the record, this is not high quality content (the panels where Yamcha is fighting those goons look terrible), and it's just fan service that will ultimately lead to not much of consequence. Goku and Vegeta will be the ones dealing with Moro…unless there's a MASSIVE curveball and it's everyone on the battlefield dealing with Moro, and Goku and Vegeta are saved for something else.
(See, I have this theory that the next villains might be either the Gods of Destruction or even the Angels, mainly based on Merus and, well, doing something with that character. I pictured him on the run from the other Angels for intervening with Earthly matters in an active role and Goku and co. defending him...)
But that is just some shit I made up. The thing is, Goku and Vegeta's power-up has been hyped so much and it has to be specifically to face Moro in battle, we all know all we're seeing now is just stalling. With a side of fan service.
But, fuck it. At this point, not having Yamcha fall on his ass while everyone gathers to laugh at him while a saibaman explodes in his face and he does that infamous dying pose (which is now Comedy Gold, apparently) and instead let him defeat a couple of nameless shmucks and act heroic? I'll take it, thank you.
-
Well that and it be hella fucked up to have someone like Yamcha or Chaotzu beating guys that could easily give guys like Piccolo or Gohan a rough time.
Only because the series got obsessed with power scaling. But the numbers are nonsense anyway… Like the last official power level given was form 2 Frieza at a million. But after that, transformations, kaikoens, super saiyan, Frieza's claims of being at only 1/3, etc... it become possible to argue their powers are at 15 million or 150 million, and theres no real way to know which is right..
It's all complete nonsense at that point anyway because then you have to attribute androids and Buu in the billions and keep making it more absurd. Especially when that same scale forces the entirety of original Dragonball to be in the range of 10-200, with Goku near 1000 for the final tournament yet we consistently see along the way that even a a little difference at that scale makes the leads insane monsters. .
The easiest and simplest solution to basically everything is to just say "most races in the universe have very low power levels, the natural high for the universe is like 3,000, with complete warrior freaks like Nail or the ginyus hitting the 40-50k range, and 100K+ monsters are basically unheard of.... and so as a result of that, all methods of measuring become meaningless after about 25,000 because the scale is busted, which is why scouters always had problems at that point when powers rose too quickly. So Ginyu and Frizeza say they're 120K and 1M and they ARE stronger so who can argue, but really maybe they're not THAT exponentially higher and its just Frieza giving himself a number and calibrating scouters too it. Sure is nice that his second form is an intimidating clean 1 million, rather than 874 thousand, isn't?
That way, instead of everyone being in the billions range that humans can't match, making the jump from thousands to millions within minutes even more extreme... you just chip back the curve and say the scale isn't THAT ridiculous after a certain threshold, and it immediately lets the rest of the cast compete.
But not the way they ran with it... which basically makes the entire ToP completely insane since the high level guys should have wiped out anyone lower in seconds... just think how much Goku outclassed the GInyu force. they couldn't even see him moving.

This kinda highlights a problem I've had with Super pretty much from the start where they really want to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to power levels. I'd rather they just toss the whole concept out altogether but they've been part of the series too long for that to happen.
Battle powers stopped being used after the Namek arc. Everything else afterward was much more vague and involved a character being sacrificed to prove how strong a new enemy was. Super basically deciding that it would rather just use which ever character it felt like for story and interaction purposes is a lot better than just repeating the same character dynamics of three or four Saiyans.
