I'm middle of rewatching the dub of Fishman Island before I get Season 10, Voyage 1. I still have to say that I prefer the dub verison of this arc over the Japansee verison. Mostly I felt the japansee verison was kinda slow. While in the dub I felt the flow was better in a lot of ways. Of all the arcs that been released on dvd so far, it's the only one I felt the english dub did the arc better job then the original version did.

@Blake:
I mean fair but again, we haven't even really seen that much of him yet. I think the next set will be more representative of his consistent performance if that makes sense
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
It's really looking like I'll have to either collect one piece stuff waaaaayyy slower if at all. It frickin' sucks because I was so close to completing it all.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
I generally like the added straw hat seperation scenes but my god it just makes all of the Sanji stuff all the more uncomfortable and transphobic feeling. One of the few things I absolutely hate about one piece.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Ah made it to the part of the dub that the one piece podcast guys cameo'd in. Thats cool.
One character not liking trans people doesn’t make the whole story transphobic; it makes one character transphobic. The story and writer seem trans friendly. Hard to have a character like Iva and all the others, and have them be painted in a consistently positive light and still be called transphobic. That said, is OP a particularly nuanced look at trans identity? No, but it can’t be everything, and it doesn’t paint them in a negative light.

I want to agree with you but I can't. Not only is Sanji not painted as wrong but tonally the scenes seem to enforce the idea that they arent "real" women. Now are bon clay and ivankov fantastic characters? Yes, because they are painted as excellent people and they have complex personalities. But for the rest Oda literally calls them what widely has been considered a slur despite being asked to stop. I think Oda is a great wider but if he does something either insensitive or hurtful I'm going to point it out. Outside of the 2 major characters they are depicted in an negative light. It's obvious just from the way they are drawn and reacted to.

OMG OMG OMG!!!
Toonami replayed a speech from 2013 and they featured One Piece in it. I know Toonami is deader than dead for One Piece but my heart is so happy when I see this.

Yeah I think people just need to accept that one piece just isn't gonna catch on in the states via cable. Cable itself has been dying for years and the ratings for one piece werent good, even after giving it 3 different chances. That being said whats killing cable? Streaming. And the biggest streaming platform in the world is picking up one piece and promoting it fairly heavily, so I think this is the best case scenario
-
I know! I cant wait till Netflix premieres One Piece!
-
It’s also just hard to watch a long running series week to week. Binging is so appropriate to OP.
-
Yeah, I've heard people complain about the one piece dub coming out in batches because thats the reason it hasn't caught up apparently? Even though it's better for binging and episodes actually come out faster this way, and if it came out weekly they literally could never catch up?
-

No, the idea is that people want it released in larger chunks—entire seasons or 26-episode batches. 13 episodes isn’t very many—especially when the release schedule is every 2-4 months. The only people who want it weekly are people like me who are talking about a weekly simuldub.
-
??? Yes people have said that too of course but no I've seen people directly say they want weekly episodes because it would lead them to catch up quicker. Which makes like no sense, people nowadays cant do basic math
-
One reason I really want the dub to speed up is so the older voice actors not to be recast. We already lost Ed Blaylock and Cole Brown, it would be heart breaking for that to continously happen. The biggest fear I have is Pam Dougherty retiring or dying, she is so great as big mom but shes already 70. I can't imagine her getting through it all at this rate.
-
Before people start getting the new set and talking about it, might as well get this post in. I remember finding Fishman Island to be largely underwhelming to boring way, way back when I first read or watched it subbed.
Rewatching and then getting through the last 2 sets that I'd ignored dubbed, I think I enjoyed it a bit more this time. Maybe it's just the significant lapse in time it's been since I last watched it, or maybe the dub has these charming little things sprinkled throughout that click more for me than the sub has, but idk. It's still not enough to elevate the arc very high on personal rankings (It's definitely on the lower end for me), but it's enough that I imagine I won't skip over most of it in the future.
The dub's way of handling some of FI's characters vocal tics really tickled my fancy. You've got them Dosun'ing up Dosun's made up words however they want while at the same time just not even translating some of Ikaros's tics. Decken, Ryuboshi, there was a lot of great work from the dub.
I'd forgotten the new set would start up with Lily Enstomach… my vague memory tells me those were some of my least favorite fillers in the series. I know they're online, but I've just been fine with waiting for the physical release.
-
I think fishman island is really over hated tbh. It's mostly to show off how much the straw hats of grown and even besides that the fisher tiger flashback was great. Hell people bitch about Hody all the time but I would argue that he fufills his purpose perfectly. He has such a flimsy motivation because thats literally the entire point.
-
The dub definitely improved my enjoyment of Fishman Island because when the anime pacing slows down and spends too much time of civilians exclaiming about whats happening on screen, at least Funimation makes it funny, or more interesting. Plus the comedy just hits better overall in the dub, but I often don't find subtitles funny. The jokes never land correctly when I don't understand the language, for delivery of jokes that is important.

This is a huge reason why I enjoy the dub more than the sub. I’ve always found it funnier because of line delivery.
FI isn’t a terrible arc; it’s just too slowly paced and has a few shoddy plot points (Sanji dying of a nosebleed).
-
Oh god I honestly forgot about the nosebleed stuff, really dumb tonal whiplash. And speaking of that, while the blood transfusion scene is very significant story wise, I find myself unable to just watch it and not question why luffy needs blood when he has lost so much more before and been fine.
-

Interestingly, that disc is the only time One Piece has had "discriminatory attitudes" in its British ratings info; Australia just said "Animated violence" for the whole of S7V6 and America has a generic TV-14 logo that Funi slaps on every OP release.
There are definitely issues with the Newkamas in terms of portraying gender-nonconforming people. Elizabeth's character design is revealed in a joke and the Newkamas spend the episode trying to forcibly recruit Sanji despite his insistence that he doesn't want that. This is something that individuals in real life think trans people will try to do. While we're here, I'm interested/optimistic in seeing (manga spoilers)
! what Oda's planning with Kikunojo.
-
Real quick just ahead of the Netflix debut. I know a few pages back people talked about this but one thing I think folks should take in mind:
If they choose to not include the dubbed theme songs, the most likely reason would probably be consistency. They likely won't want it to be jarring when Netflix eventually gets to The Davy Back Fight and the music shifts to Japanese.
The controversy surrounding one of the singers is probably not gonna be the deciding factor here.
! Kiku is my favorite character in Wano and a breath of fresh air I've been wanting for a while. I know it's irrational and probably never going to happen in a million years but I want her to join the crew

Season Ten, Voyage One arrived today for me and the credits seems to be the same unfortunately but I guess we'll see how they end up as the season progresses. The commentary for Episode 576 has Colleen, Luci, Kara Edwards (confirmed in the commentary as the voice of Lily) and Momonga's voice actor Francis Henry. Interestingly enough it seems that they weren't sure if they were going to say Zed or Z in the dub for the Z's Ambition arc so they recorded both which is strange because they used Zed already in Film Z. Gonna watch all the episodes proper soon, looking forward to hearing Punk Hazard dubbed finally!

i mean, that's gonna happen regardless. in fact for sengoku both the dub and sub VAs got replaced at the same point in the series due to death of the original actors. it's not like the original is done and we're just waiting for the dub cast to complete it. plenty of the japanese voice actors there have passed away too.

Wait really? Come on dude this is just unprofesionial at this point. I never thought we would have to fight to get the names of the people in a recent funimation release. Another thing, it's really dissapointing that they have cut the special features so much. We went from 2 commentaries and a special feature each set to just one commentary. This might be because of quarintine but I would've thought they would've been recorded a decent amount in advance. Speaking of is there anything in the commentary that suggests when it might've been recorded?

I know that of course, when you have a long running series people have to get replaced sometimes, but they have a lot they havent dubbed and I would like the elderly voice actors to be able to get through things.

It was definitely recorded more recently because Kara Edwards makes a comment about how she may have gotten something she said about Panz Fry's VA wrong because it has been a long time since she recorded for the episodes. Joel being absent from the commentary also seems to indicate that it was recorded recently.

Hmm interesting. I just really hope they intended to record more but it was effected by quarintine. It looks like the voyage 2 dvd mightve been delayed by not being able to record special features, but even then recording commentaries seems like it could very feasibly be done from home. Again though I just hope they keep releasing it digitally regularly even if physical releases have to be delayed. We've just already waiting so long.

Toei US themselves maybe? I'm not sure who's exactly responsible for this
-
You would think requesting a cast list would be an achieveable task but there has to be a reason they're doing it right?
-
Awesome to know that Kara is voicing Lily for the Z Ambition filler. I been a fan of her since she originally voiced Videl during the original dub of Dragon Ball Z. I don't care what people say about the Z Ambition arc, I like it and I can't wait to watch the dub of it. A least it's better then the Goat Island arc.
-

I was thinking whoever at FUNimation is responsible for encoding the credits onto the credits sequence. But then again, they're probably just typing in what they're given, and told where to place it.
I wonder who's responsible for giving it….
Maybe reaching out to a few voice actors on Twitter who work on One Piece, and letting them know that many of their fellow actors aren't being credited on these new episodes, perhaps they can reach out and get more information.
-
Random question but I'm curious, did they ever add art to the dvd menus again? At one point they just got rid of it and all of the menus looked… plain.
-
They haven't done that since like Season 3.
-
No, they had art up at the top from the voyage color up till the end of season 6 I believe
-
@Blake:

I don't really count that. Since they haven't character art stuff since the ending of Season 3, where they have character art on every menu screen.

Don't you mock "How's tricks with you?" guy!
I kid, I'd always be happy to be a defender of all One Piece filler arcs. It's just been a really long time since I watched Z's Ambition stuff and all that comes to me is some lingering memories of some cringey Lily scenes? I'm sure it'll be fine once I get the set and see the dub version. God I hate that we're in an age where filler arcs have been replaced with recap episodes and… whatever you call what happened to the one piece anime.

Man I agree the recap episodes to.me drag the arcs down, some of OP's Filler arc were a nice bridge before we got to the main action plus it was nice to see the crew have down time and bonding moments but I digress. I enjoyed the Lily arc tho reminded me.of the old.OP before they came to New worlds.

Release day and still haven’t gotten a legit shipping notification from Funimation. Sounds like Rightstuf was the right way to go this time.

I got s10v1 yesterday, but don't know if I should just wait till another set drops before I watch…

I usually ration to one old, one new per week or two new a week. Marathoned this s10v1 set and have been regretting it ever since.
-
I could never ration episodes out lol. I already wait so long for the sets to come out that I need to watch them all to feel satisfied.
-
Ah, I take it back. The set arrived in the mail from Funimation despite no shipping notice or update on their site.

Not to mention the poor quality of the text and logo; tends to look like a bootleg copy, these DVDs. Only thing that’s changed since last release is the DVD disc art. Everything else is the same.

She just says the bit about Z/Zed out of context, not stating specifically that it was for these episodes that they had to figure it out. I think she was talking about the movie—just triggered to remember because of what she was seeing.

Hmm so MHA ones justice 2 got a dub out of no where in an update. This is making me generally curious if theyre becoming more willing to dub things in general? I wouldnt expect like a PW4 dub update because of all of the characters they would have to record and cast while in quarintine, but maybe them dubbing future ones is a slight possibility?

I wonder if this might be related to the anime since it's going to be on Netflix in two days.As for MHA game getting a dub update, it's only a matter of time before a One Piece game gets one. This is the second non-Dragon Ball or Naruto property that Bandai Namco contracted a dub for this year.
Pirate Warriors is an established brand. Let's hope PW4 gets a dub update or at least PW5.

Well while popiularity is a factor, another is just that one piece has so many character to get in the booth AND cast because how behind they are that its way way more difficult than most games. If it ever does happens, it's bound to be for the next game. Doing a dub patch for PW4 would hardly be worth it, not to mention that getting all the actors while in quarintine is way more hard than it already is. At that point they should just try to keep dubbing the show from home.
