Lucci and Jabura official names?
-
-
RUCCHI?! Noooo, that sounds so bad. The L sounds better then the r imo.
-
mm. what a keen eye. Thannk you for such.
-
I'll keep on calling them Lucci and Jyabura thank you very much.
Beside we'll probably never see them again.
-
Jabra sounds like that awful Abra pokemon -.-
So this will affect future ADC fansub releases and K-F fansubs
-
But on the same poll he spelled Iceburg's name as "Iceberg", despite the fact that he wrote it "Iceburg" every other time…
And if we are going to say these are "official", then we shouldn't forget about "Pauly", which is how he wrote it there. XD
-
jabra reminds me of this sorry guy:
Dabura/Dabra
-
The "y" in "Jyabura' was always excessive anyway. I don't really see a problem with "Jabra" anyway.
Rucchi… eh.
-
Noooo….
we can't have bad fanfic ending with
Aokiji: "Roocchhii.... you've got some splainin' to do!" -
Well, I suppose we could wait for the next data book to come out, but this is the most offical romanization so far.
You're all free to use whatever you want of course.
-
HAHAHAHHAHAA RUUCHI~~~~~~ JABRA!!! It's like I'm in a bad dream..
HAHAHAHA I can imagine 4kids will ironically see nothing wrong with these names and keep them around for the english version."Don't have a cow Roo-chie"
-
O yeah, Jabra's the company that makes my ear gels.
-
I doubt its Rucci.
Lucci means "the light" and Rob can be romanized as "Robu", giving him the english name "To Steal the Light", which is probably what Oda intended. Rs and Ls are just too easily lost in translation.

Well, Oda said that was an accident, I believe.
-
i think Oda never intended the meaning "To Steal the Light" cause some fan pointed it out in a SBS, and he was shocked to hear it.
-
@Stephen's:
D: Hello, Oda-sensei. It's nice to meet you, I've always been a One Piece fan. Now, I have a bit of a serious question. In class the other day, I learned that the word "Rob" stands for "steal." So I got curious, and after searching, learned that "Lucci" means "light" in Italian. Put them together, it's "steal the light." I thought it was fascinating, because "stealing" is a concept that runs throughout One Piece, not just in this part. So you must have named him that on purpose, right? P.N. Refect
O: …y... y... well, yeah. I-I... I did (shocked). You know me. I'm the guy who comes up with the deep meaningful names. Yep. In fact, "Rob Lucci" even means "steal the light," or SO I HEAR. (had no idea)
(16 lights stolen)
-
This is really bad.
-
**Lucchi sounds better so I shall use that.
Jabra and Jabura sound close enough.**
-
Don't discriminate and hate on Jabra while you try to make Rucci be less lame!
-
i dont mind Rucchi or Lucchi because it sounds the same in the anime to me. But, as for reading, i gotta go with Lucchi, because that's how im used to seeing it :|
-
In case anyone is wondering, this is not going to change how I spell their names (Lucci and Jabura).
-
Lucci probably got hit with the L/R translation stick.
I'm sure Oda has no idea exactly what he's doing and when he translated it it was into howe it sounds not the exact spelling.
as for Jayabura, also probably some were extra, uneeded, silent ect….
and Enel/Eneru I can understand sicne in spoken Japanese they'd change the L to and R and then add the ooh sound sonto the end.
-
Spellings are commonly misdone when put into english.
Such as on HnI Brian Hawk's trunks said Hark. Its more or less them spelling it how they say it.
-
who cares as long as they're pronounced the same.

Jabra and Jabura are not pronounced the same, though. >.>;
-
Gotta wonder if this was officially run past Oda before hand or… is this just a thing Shueisha added on the fly, without consulting Oda first?
-
Oda probably does most of the bonus drawings
I noticed though that some of the characters loked a little…funky. perhaps he didn't do this in particular. SHanks in particular looks a bit off, his chin is more rounded, especially.
-
Those names sounds wack. Personally I'm sticking to Lucci and Jyabura.

All the pics are from the manga. Shanks is from that scene in volume 25 where he decides to go and meet Whitebeard.
-
Once in a game, Franky was called FLanky…
-
Thanks for that, i've now assimilated the correct names into my being
Rucchi and Jabra.
-
In no translation I guess will these names be realized.. Probably in some bad ones but I'm sure every translator will use the form of the names we have accustomed. (Sounds like a wish.. whatever ^^)
-
But on the same poll he spelled Iceburg's name as "Iceberg", despite the fact that he wrote it "Iceburg" every other time…
It was Writen "Icebarg" amd said either "Iceberg/Iceburg" :p but it really dont matter because they all sound the same ;_;
Lucchi will sound funny in anime when franky says it anyways :p
-
Jabra and Jabura are not pronounced the same, though. >.>;
They are, afaik.
And if those were the real spellings I wouldn't mind btw. If it had been the other way around, rucchi from the start and then lucci, everybody would be reacting exactly the same.
-
Once in a game, Franky was called FLanky…
Oh, god, is that foreshadowing the 4kids name?
Flanky, Real Name Cut Ham.
-
Jabra and Jabura are not pronounced the same, though. >.>;
The 'u' there is silent, I think. (If you go by Japanese pronouncing)
Well I always call Paulie 'Pauly', because it's more feminine, and Rucchi is fine by me.
-
Anyone else think smoker looks funny without his forehead lines?
-
HAHAHAHHAHAA RUUCHI~~~~~~ JABRA!!! It's like I'm in a bad dream..

No, al-Kahn will be like:
"Okay, this guy…jyy-aa-boo-raa...too long. Let's call him Jabbu-babu.
"What about the leopard man?"
"Easy. We'll change the pigeon to a poodle and call him Bob Poochy." -
There is no "Jya" in Hirigana - only "Ja". Therefore, "Jabura" or "Jabra" would be correct.
However, that doesn't prevent Oda from spelling it as "Jyabura". We'll just have to wait and see.
-
I'm definetly sticking with Lucci here, Rucchi just looks..odd. Jabra isn't that bad though, Jyabura still looks better, so I'll just call him that.
-
Chapter 418
Ruffy vs. Rob Rucchi^^
-
Given that Oda acknowledges Lucci = Light in the SBS (unintentional fer sure) I think we can safely say that Lucci is the correct usage. As for Jabra. The VA's don't say Jabra, they say Jabura, so we can likewise discard that.
All in all leave shit in the toilet.
-

Franky is also pronounced "Furankii". Should we call him that because that's how it's written and pronounced in Japanese?
Like any other language, Japanese has certain rules, and it is impossible to leave that u out of Jabura/Jabra, even if you don't want it there. That said, even though the Katakana of his name do spell "Jabura", his name can still be romanized as both Jyabura and Jabra, because both of those would be pronounced "Jabura".As for my thoughts on this, I don't really mind. Maybe it's a mistake, maybe it's really how Oda intended the names to be spelled, all it does in my eyes is complicate things a little.
And besides, don't we all still use Bon Clay, even though the official romanization was revealed to be Bon Kurei a while ago? -
yeah they had a wnated poster, but who knows it could have been messed up in a similar way, since they use K's not C's and they were tryng to think how to get clay, pronunced clay, to work gramatically. the awnser was make it Kray then they add the required u, Kuray, then attempt to make the ending seem more proper and you get Kurei
anyways they always seemed to pronounce it Jyabura most likely just the way it sounds, but you can't have Jabra
what about king cobra? they did pronounce it as close as possible. but Jabra, there's no way. cobra sounds like cobra, "jabra" is specifically pronounced Jabura, and if you hear what I do I hear that y in there and get a quick jyabura.
-
Well, there is the fact that with Cobra, it was obvious what pronounciation Oda was going for (and you can still hear the "u"s in Crocodile and Smoker), while there is confusion with other names. It also depends on the voice actors and how well they can pronounce words that don't follow the rules of the Japanese language. For instance, Smoker's first voice actor was the first one to clearly pronounce the L in Luffy as an L, IIRC.
-
Gomu Gomu no Pisutoru.
-
Bon Kurei was shown to be a Japanese holiday, I believe, making his name fit with the rest of the Baroque Works' agents.
As for the poll, it looks to me like something put together by Shonen Jump, which makes it just as likely that it didn't get completely vetted by Oda before it ran. Wasn't there another instance of this before? Some cards or something?
-
I chose not to believe it until Oda draws it into the manga since this COULD have been put together by a Shounen Jump guy or an assistant.
Besides that, Rob Lucchi means something and Oda Acknowledged it in an SBS so that name makes more sense to me.
as for Jabra, that U COULD be pronounced ir it COULDNT depending on how you say it. It's just like people saying "You pronounce the 'U' in Sasuke's name" for naruto, when in reality, you DON'T!
but again, I think Oda didnt do this one, so just pronounce/spell it whatever way you want -

Well, to be honest, "light" in Italian is "Luce", not "Lucci". "Luci" (with one "c") is the plural, "lights".
And I agree, Lucci and Jabura (or Jyabura) are the best spellings, in my opinion. -
Chopper also has an attack called "Scoop" according to Red.
I won't be changing how I spell it anytime soon unless I see his name appear on the pages of the actual comic or Oda himself descend from the heavens and declare the proper spelling.
