i do like snk (only read the manga though),but i really don't get why it is so popular,it doesn't seem to me that it does anything THAT well compared to other series in the past or present

it's rather unique

it has quite a few elements you find in classic battle shonen to feel familiar enough for the mainstream public while at the same time being a horror mystery thriller which is a genre that's not exactly common for the demographic

it doesn't try to be the umpteenth heir to the Dragon Ball crown, it's its own thing and I guess that's what people like (that's what I like at least)

Is this the only comment you've read of mine? I already know. The point was that there's no reason to censor AoT if you have some series with a lot of gore and a series with the same target audience not censoring its gore.

I don't think it's a matter of graphical violence as much as SnK being really bleak and subverting the "three pillars" of Jump (friendship, perseverance, victory), like that scene where the hero decides to trust his friends and all of them die horribly

Even HxH for all its gore and disturbing shit is still rather light hearted and optimistic at the end of the day

Sakura is also supposed to be Kishimoto's idea of a "normal girl" while basically behaving like a misogynistic stereotype

Generally speaking the women of SnK are a breath of fresh air in terms of characterization for a shonen manga

Well, I did say she had some moments of weakness, too. I also never said she's hogging the spotlight. There's a lot Sueish stuff about her. Last of her kind, ace fighter, saves the day a lot. She has that backstory and the few moments she went to blindly help Eren, but it still bothers me. Maybe it seems like that because a lot of the other characters have gone through a lot crazier experiences? Just something bugging me.

But she doesn't save the day a lot, that's the thing

If you look at the key events of the story, she really isn't the only or even the major factor in their resolution

During the attack on Trost, she does contribute with her fighting skills to help her friends refill on gas but she needs saving once from titan Eren, and she really doesn't do more than Eren who slaughters countless titans or even Armin who comes up with successful strategies at key moments to save everyone's asses

During the blockading operation, she kills some titans but it's Armin who convinces Eren to pick up that rock and obviously it's Eren who plugs the hole in the wall, and it ends with Rivaille swooping in to save the day

During the expedition outside the walls, sure she contributes to saving Eren but it's Rivaille again who does the biggest part of the job and without him she'd have been killed

And finally when they try to capture Annie, she's the one who cuts her fingers and makes her fall to her doom, but it's Armin who comes up with the strategy and it's Eren in titan form who throws Mikasa in the air because she wouldn't have been fast enough to reach Annie otherwise

So yeah Mikasa does her job and contributes with her particular skills but she doesn't save the day on a regular basis, you could actually argue Armin does it more even if I personally think they're just about equal in their contributions, just in different ways, and that's specifically one of the reasons why this manga is so well written, everyone gets to do something positive making use of their personal talents

Mikasa reminds me a lot of Morgiana, but it bothers me that she's so good with so many things. She's one of the strongest fighters, she's almost always reasonable, she saves the day a lot. Sort of iffy about that.

She's almost always unreasonable actually

There's a lot of instances where she's letting her emotions get the better of her, like when she was about to attack some of her fellow soldiers when they wanted to abandon titan Eren during the blockading operation, or when she gave up on her life after saying she'd lead the rookies attack on the HQ to refill on gas, or when she ignored Rivaille/Levi's orders against the female titan and ended up endangering herself and having to be saved by the corporal who got injured in the process

She's not a flawless, infallible character, as for her saving the day a lot, I don't see it, she contributes like everyone else, but she certainly doesn't hog the spotlight to the point it feels like the Mikasa show

What would even be the point anyway, it's not like it gives us any sort of insight on the titans origin or the conspiracy

If Ymir ends up coincidentally sharing her name with the person that titan mentioned, it'll just mean that Isayama created a rather pointless character just for the sake of vaguely hinting at her being important
