Unlikely to be but it'd be fun if next episode there were 100k or so skeletons/bodies lying around. Uhhh, that cleaning job.

After season 7 you were expecting the showrunners to produce writing like in seasons 1-4 without book material?
I expect them to still be able to pace their show a bit better than having the opener of the final season be boring as all hell.
They clearly aren't as capable without the guidelines of a book. They still produce an enjoyable show, but the quality went down writing wise.
Oh without a doubt, but there have still be enjoyable parts along the way.
s8e1 was one of the few episodes of GoT that I would happily never watch again though.
–----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In regards to episode 3;
! Some of the cinematography and action was very well done.
! Story wise, a lot of missed opportunities to be honest.
! I'll reserve my judgment for now overall but I'll be interested to see what impact a lot of these characters that could have been killed off/white walkered to great effect have on the rest of the season
! This also leads me into just how far GoT has fallen in terms of the reasons that used to make it such captivating viewing
! The plot armour in this episode was absolutely astoundingly bad.
! One of the shots toward the end where the courtyard was piled with hundreds of bodies with 7 or 8 main characters standing awkwardly in among them was the perfect reflection of this
! Also Jon surviving in the middle of a crowd of wights similar to the one that so easily destroyed an entire Dothraki horde in seconds
! Sigh. I'm honestly kind of looking more forward to GoT being over than actually finding out what happens in the story at this point. -
Yeah, S8E1 was rough but I also wasn't really expecting much from the show anymore. Then episode 2 was amazing and had so many interesting scenes that I was almost drawn back in. Episode 3 was what it was though. I didn't hate it. It just hit all the story beats that were to be expected and it was paced weirdly.
-
Then episode 2 was amazing and had so many interesting scenes that I was almost drawn back in.
It was ok, the fireside scene was great
By no means would I call episode 2 amazing, especially not by overall GoT standards?
-
I guess not. Lowered expectation played a role, I'm sure.
-
! I hope we still get to know more about the ice king, it would suck if they never gave us any backstory at all about him or how he was created, or what/why he was trying to accomplish I honestly loved the fan theory that Bran went back in time and became the ice king, along with being Bran the builder and being the one to drive the mad king mad)
! That's what the prequel series is for. I'm not kidding, they actually said that.
-
The implication is:
Book spoilers with a heavy dosis of speculation.
! The night king is a human turned into that by the children of the forest in order to defend them from the first men. As all sentient weapons, he went rogue, and it took a lot of sacrifices to get him to go north and stay there.
! His powers are actually he's a very strong warg, getting into a ton of dead bodies. In the books most of the wights are way fresher than the skeletal ones that have been seen in the series.
! Honestly, I doubt we'll learn that much on them beyond that. If it even gets confirmed. It doesn't seem like George's style. I mean, what are the mechanics of warging? face changing? the non charlatanery of Mel? Qyburn's brand of necromancy? Any explanation we get on this season I'd also take it with a grain of salt.
! I find any exploration on the age of myths, in this "real narrative, this is 100% what happened" to be.. a bad idea. This is a limitation of tv and cinema, the princess bride effect I'd call it, where is hard to represent an story in fiction inside a fiction, without heavy use of the framing device, or what they did in Harry Potter with the tale of the three brothers, a complete change of media, in the end the same thing, change of framing device. Without that it paints what happens as "reality" in that fiction, and that's kinda boring. -
Episode 1 and 2 should just have been recut into one 80 minute episode.
Also, the Night King waited for 10 000 years to have less of an impact than Walder Frey.:ninja:
-
I suspect Bran will go south with the rest. Ever since last season he's been way too interested in having Jon know who his real parents are, none of which had any affect on the Great War whatsoever. There has to be something there.
Or could just be old Bran wanting to let his brother know the truth.
Or show runners being inconsistent again …
-
Also, the Night King waited for 10 000 years to have less of an impact than Walder Frey.:ninja:
Behold my plot to kill absolutely no one of value and fall on the first obstacle.
The night is in fact short and holds no terrors whatsoever.
-
It's weird to use the NK as a way to make Cersei "threatning" again rather than his own legit threat.
Also Bran should go back to that cave where the other 3 raven was. Or did that previous one went there just because he likes the cold?
-
Also, the Night King waited for 10 000 years to have less of an impact than Walder Frey.:ninja:
How so? The NK wiped out House Mormont while Frey failed in wiping out the Starks.
-

I believe that place was magically protected until Bran invited the
vampireNight King in… So I guess there's no point in returning there. Bran's free to sit around in any one place as long as he pleases. -
Bran gonna fuse with the tree in winterfell, the end of his story. xD
The more you think about the episode the worse it gets.
-
Just a warning, early spoilers are out there, and they are more substantive than winter managed to be.

Thanks for the heads up, gonna avoid twitch chats etc, till I watch the episode monday after work.

I liked the episode but it really feels pointless after the last one. Or to be more accurate this episode make the last feel like it was an sidequest from another show. And i'm still not sure about that.
Probably would have been a cool episode in early s7 tho.
! I'm sad Tormund never got to be with the big lady but Brianne is having the best week of her life. First Knighthood and now Jaimie.
! Tyrion being mean to Brianne felt OOC to me and unccesary. He never been that unecessarily assholish and he has become more respectful not less.
! Cool weapon she has on her boats Cersei. It's a very enjoyable episode on that front. It's just hard to shake the feeling that this should have happen earlier. Or be be better weaved into the NK plot. Or that last episode shouldn't have happened.
! I like the handling of Missandei death. In that the focus is on both Danny and Grey Worm and she doesn't get a warm fuzzy speech. She reaffirms her trust in her queen and GreyWorm has a brief moment of vulnerability.
! Jon would be an awful king. More importantly I'm tired of trying to portray Danny as bloodthirsty. She gave on her with Jon and the first part of season 7 is her listenning to her advisor and not using her advantages in order to let the people of King's landing feel good. But we prentend like wanting to kill Cersei after she's losing more and more ground is some blood thirsty shit. I mean is there really any King that would not have pressed their advantage in her position?
! I like seeing Arya and the Hound reunited. I could have spent another 10-20 minutes with them.
! I wonder what Jaimie plans.
! Bronn felt weirdly mad and agrressive. -
! I'm not sure whether or not Bronn showing up at the North is a plot hole, but it felt weird and awkward to me either way.
! Hopefully next episode is the final battle, and the one after that is just politics and closure. -
With Arya killing the NK and what happened this episode the leaks I've read appear to be the real deal after all.
-
! Tormund trying to talk about his heartbreak with the freaking Hound of all people is the highlight of the season.
-
! Did they seriously kill 2dragons just like that, without even doing anything relevant with them. wow. I sure was expecting them to die, but not before doing s.o.m.e.t.h.i.n.g.
You have fucking dragons and you let them die against arrows ? TWICE ??!?!!!?
I don't know, maybe I'm the only one here who over-estimated the dragons. After all, one was killed by the night king, and the other one by the daVinci from the show… -
God this show is absolute garbage now.
! The only good part in this episode was this.
!
! Oh and btw, here's your talented show runner:
!As if the terrible writing wasn't enough, they seriously left a starbucks cup in the show.
!
The tweet I saw which summed it all up and exactly what I was thinking:
! "Cersei, your enemies have stupidly approached within range of our giant crossbows and with one volley we can wipe all of them out, end this war, and the iron throne will be yours forever."
! Cersei: "Behead her personal assistant." -
! "Cersei, your enemies have stupidly approached within range of our giant crossbows and with one volley we can wipe all of them out, end this war, and the iron throne will be yours forever."
! Cersei: "Behead her personal assistant."Probably the most OOC part for me. Especially with Tyrion.
-
[hide] Bronn should never lead a scene. That crossbow scene was the worst use of Bronn in a long line of Bronn misuse[/hide]
-
how the hell is a siege more humanitarian than burning the castle, these characters are so fucking dumb

Emilia Clarke no wait all the actors are above this piece of crap they are writing.
But damn was that tweet hilarious. -
This has been happening since at least season 6, but this season and the last present a really pure case of flanderization with just about every single character. The ones who aren't are just written poorly instead.
-
Emilia Clarke's lack of acting skills are finally paying off in that tweet
-
As a latecomer who marathoned the first 7 seasons, I didn't have THAT many issues with seasons 5-7 (Mostly just how Jaime and Tyrion were written (and I guess Jon too, but frankly I never liked him much even in the best seasons), and the forced romance between Jon and Danny). With Season 8 though, every episode has something that bothers me.
I'm wondering how much of this is just me finally having to sit down and absorb all of the issues instead of just continuing onto the next episode, and how much of it is just Season 8 just being that much worse.
-
Bronn developing the skill of teleporting is interesting, and his scene where he threatens former comrades felt real. He came and went just like winter did, but his arrows will fly towards Jaime and specifically aimed at the golden hand. When Sam writes the "Game of Thrones" book he will know of this detail and how Euron was as dickless as Theon.

Seasons 5-7 were equally shit, from being incredibly inconsistent, whether it´s the characters, the setting and the world, you have barely any believable character arcs, many events or actions simply made no sense whatsoever, so that supposedly impactful scenes, unlike the first four seasons, lost any credibility, and the list goes on.
These dudes are two nerds that liked a somewhat obscure but awesome fantasy novel and managed to get it adapted but as soon as they ran out of novels, well this is what you get.

Where did my rant about cultural homgenization of Essos go?
Anyways, Mel and Greyworm saying Valar Morghulis doesn't make sense as they don't follow the god of dead, it being a fringe religion in Bravos, the place with the most religious freedom in that world. In this ted talk…

I also found this part strange

! So instead of Brienne bonding with Tormund she gets a Jaime mercy-fuck instead, hilarious. Was that fanservice? Is this what the "community" asked for? Or did they go against the expectations here? I'm not into the whole twitter/facebook/social media GOT thing.
I did enjoy the Hound / Arya scene though, prefectly honest here.

! Yeah, I was really rooting for Tormund there.
! I mean, there was chemistry between Brienne and Jaime, but … -
I used to think this show was a tragedy. Now, I realize, it's a comedy…
-
Basically they went fully Hollywood and Tumblr twitter pandering because why the hell not
Spineless crap.Season 5-7 had its peaks but even it's worse episodes combined is better than the crap that is 8.
It went in a direction with its fair share of loopholes but it was an alternative route or a watered down version that was still acceptable.
Heck for its bag of problems, Battle of Bastards and the Loot train ambush were both amazing scenes that could be something happening in asoif world.
But this?
This is no longer a cheaper or summarized/alternative version of what the plot could be.
This is an utter slaughter of the very essence of the show. All because of fucking human ego because those two rolling in their fat stacks of cash don't even give a shit about storytelling anymore.
-
! Eh, personally, I always preferred Jaime/Brienne over Tormund/Brienne. Their first scene together, when Tormund got an obvious insta-crush on her, I thought was cute and that he would be a decent enough alternative if things with Jaime didn't work out, but honestly, since then, Tormund kinda turned me off from that pairing with constantly just leering at Brienne rather than really trying to get to know her better, plus telling crazy stories to impress her that more just creeped her out than anything, and just generally coming on too strong, lulz. She was probably never gonna get with him anyway.
! That being said, while I loved Jaime and Brienne hooking up, of course the show had to give that and then just immediately take it away. I really hope Jaime isn't actually seriously going back to Cersei (yes, I know the showrunners said after the episode that Jaime's "addicted to her" or whatever, but that could be misdirection, and these are the same idiots that claimed Daenerys forgot about a fleet that she and her advisors seriously just talked about, so…) and throwing all his character development out the window, but hey, wouldn't be the first time they completely fucked up writing his character. If he does have another goal in mind with going back to her, well...that could easily not end well.
! Also, I don't know if Bronn was supposed to come across as sympathetic or not in his scene here, but...while he was more of a dick than usual, he does have a point. His character was indeed basically reduced the past few seasons to just "following Jaime around grumbling about all the promises Jaime's made that he hasn't followed through on". I suppose some of it is also just him being really ambitious, though, and wanting more than just the quite-a-bit-of-money they presumably already have been paying him.
! And then a whole lotta garbage thrown in there. Like horrible battle tactics to the point of plot-induced stupidity on both sides. (Dany "forgetting about the fleet" and somehow not noticing them from the angle they were flying at, Cersei not just killing Dany and her army when they were lined up right outside the castle...). And way to absolutely suck at keeping secrets, everybody. I could understand why Dany didn't want Jon telling his sisters the truth, but I also did get where he was coming from with feeling like they needed to know. But then ironically Daenerys was right after all and Sansa decides to spill to Tyrion, and then Tyrion tells Varys, someone he knows is shifty and conniving, just because they're drinking buddies or some shit? Really?
! I mean, I could get trying to push the Mad Queen angle with Dany, and considering her family history, it would make sense...but right now, she has every reason to be paranoid considering that Sansa and Varys both are, in fact, plotting against her. And then there's the fact that she put her plans of conquest aside to come help Jon and save the North because she loves him; lost a dragon, her most devoted advisor, and the majority of her army in doing so, only for the North to basically still not give her any respect (especially Sansa); and now she's lost another dragon and her best friend. Like...she was definitely being pretty pushy with Jon and rushed her army into a fight they weren't ready for far too soon and it bit her in the ass, but I kind of can't blame her for at least being really upset and put out with everything that's going on.
! And yeah, the fact that the "Inside the Episode" interviews were so fucking lazy with their excuses for why things happened the way they did, and that damned Starbucks cup...how are we the audience supposed to still care about this story and this show when the showrunners themselves sure seem to be out of fucks to give? It's unbelievable how awful this is. It's like they saw other really good series that had really bad final seasons/endings and decided to be like "Hold my beer." -
The ending has leaked. Well, it leaked months ago to be honest. I'm currently purchasing a large surplus of popcorn (kernel free) to eat for when the final episode drops. If any of you have the power to harness the internet's rage for whatever reason, sunday after this upcoming one will be the perfect time to do so.

Since I have completely given up on this shit show at this point, I want them to go full on crazy mode so I can bask in it’s stupidity and the reactions online.
For some reason though I still don‘t wanna read the leaks but witness it myself watching it, despite not caring for the writing and characters, lol.

! It's not like she ever seemed interested in Tormund. So regardless which was chosen it would be fanservice-y.
! As far far as community goes both pairing were appreciated.–- Update From New Post Merge ---

I disagree and strongly believe that season 7 is the worst game of thrones as ever been.

! Jaimie as always been a shitty companion to Bronn. He keeps making promises but never paid while Tyrion made sure to actually pay his debt and make it worth it. > >! And then a whole lotta garbage thrown in there. Like horrible battle tactics to the point of plot-induced stupidity on both sides. Really?
! I get Tyrion sharing it with Varys. I don't think it's about drinking buddies. They are both advisor to the queen and they need to discuss what to do with this information. It's important to get in front of it. Sansa can easily share it with anyone she believes will make Jon and Varys is the man that has been helping keep the alliances afloat and knows how to handle BS.
! Sansa telling is the more questionable choice since 1- She just made Jon a taerget for the queen 2- She would be sending Jon in the south at king's landing where she believes people of her family don't do well. There was no upside to telling someone. And I'm not sure I buy Sansa telling someone with no actual advantage gain from it.! I mean, I could get trying to push the Mad Queen angle with Dany, and considering her family history, it would make sense…but right now, she has every reason to be paranoid considering that Sansa and Varys both are, in fact, plotting against her. ! I'm pretty sure the mad king was considered mad because he killed people for no fucking reason and took great pleasure in torture. Taking revenge is not going mad queen and it annoys that people keeps pretending she is. Jeoffrey and his glee at inflicting pain was a potential future mad king.
! She spends half her time listenning to her adviser(they suck) and compromising with people she doesn't have to but people will still give her shit. No matter what she does she's supposedely losing and it's annoying when the show pretends this BS is a real thing. I can understand it for Sansa that as seen to much monsters but pretty much everyone else is just bitchy and annoying. -

Can't believe they ended up being true guess I should've expected with those 2 in charge.
-
I understand where Sansa is coming from …
but I don't think she realizes that if Dany loses, Cersei wins. And if Cersei wins, the North is fucked.
-
The Ned kept a secret for 2 decades, Sansa kept it for 2 seconds meme will never get old.

Jon kept it 2 days?
-

Not necesarily, think the north as Russia. That winter they are so proud is their last line of defense, and Euron's fleet can't be on two sides at once.
Then there's moat calin, the one good road to the north, defended by a treacherous swamp, and a particulary dumb but effective fort. Of course the characters in the show don't believe in fortifications, but still is there.
-
Jon kept it 2 days?
True in a way but a different beast. It was his secret to entrust, if person X told you in confidence for instance that he was gay and ask you not to tell people you can't use the fact that he told you as an excuse for telling others. But i guess in an indirect way it is Jon's fault for not realizing what type of person Sansa was and how her word means about as much as her mentors word did
