@Robby:
Here, have a nice easily digestable video on culutral appropriation, using Disney cartoons for examples to explain the thesis of why it's problematic.
I watched the video to its entirely.
Here her points that I have a cripe with. Just because Pocahontas was drawn as "sexy" is not causation because of rape of actual American Indian peeps. Like it's just an outfit to me.
Also, it's a Disney movie, of course it is supposed to have an happy ending. [She brought a point of the two races together.] Except you know this is a movie just using some historic stuff but ultimately being its own thing.
Seems her cripe is that if you use a specific race has to be 100% historically accurate, but let's look at movies about medieval ages, and how most don't even talk the bad stuff that happened. Why should other movies be any different? If you want a movie that is based 100% culture, they can make one, and not just complain about other movies because it does not have what you looking for. So, Pocahontas is not a bad movie to me, and sure it may not talk about the "exact history", but movies in general can't always be the same idea. There's Lilo and Stitch that does show the struggles, but not every movie featuring an ethic group has to be about its struggles. To me, that's just complaining to just complain because you not getting what you want.
Here's a better example using my transgender status. Sure I wouldn't mind a story about a transgender person's struggle through life, but sometimes it can be good. Some trans peeps I know had accepting families, etc. So, it can't always be a struggle to satisfy an audience. By the way, from my understanding, this whole topic of cultural appropriation is an American one or even just English speaking one.
Also, she does not know me why I should be offended by her speech on the topic. It just confirms to me, it is complaining because you not getting what you want in a movie, and then label it as being "bad" to the culture, etc. Also, just because there are white people in said movie, does not make it a bad thing, it is just part of that specific story. It all boils down to, some movies have these elements, others have different ones; doesn't make it bad or good at all in my view.
I just think it's looking too much into things like having a non-white person direct a movie about a specific group of people. It's a movie for goodness sake. I think instead of getting annoying because a movie does not get want you want, we should focus on actual racism like police brutality, people not hiring someone because of a black name, etc. And educate in schools the actual history of colonialism, etc. But a movie? I mean come on.
Regardless, that was a poor argument. If I want to write a story using a colored person, I should be able too. Just like how non-transgender people can write about a movie talking about transgender struggles. I'm just gonna agree to disagree here with ya, as we have our own opinions on this topic; and that's okay. So, yeah :P
Edit: It just seems it is all double standards, and it is a bit silly. Movies are not trying to gloss over the past, but that's just it, it's just a movie.
Edit2: I just think it is respect taken too far as well. Something is always gonna offend someone, so there's no point in changing something just because there might be a case of offense.
@Nobodyman:
Really? It doesn't bother you at all? I mean, I get you personally not wanting to serve in the military, but what about other transgender who may really want to?
I don't know if you have a dream job or anything that you want really want to do with your life, but imagine being told you can't be allowed to do it just because of who you are.
Oh, no, I never said it was okay. I replying to greenvsred on why I don't think it is stupid and terrible. I think it is stupid and shouldn't be happening, but at the same time, it is not as bad as it could be compared to many other things like firing one for being transgender, or not even finding a job because people don't like you, or what Kaiolino said about not going to the bathroom:
@Kaiolino:
Let’s not forget the GOP also banned trans people from going to the bathroom that identifies with their gender.
Sorry for the confusion ^^;;;;
