I think Shiryu getting the invisibility fruit plays into the motif that the BB pirates are the nega-SHs. "Wounds on the back are a swordsman's shame" is the mantra of Zoro: Honorable Swordsman. Shiryu turning invisible takes that mantra to its natural opposite extreme.

Yeah, unless Shiryu can't upgrade his abilities with his new fruit, getting it was somewhat pointless against Zoro. The latter could sense and "saw" steel with closed eyes back in Alabasta.
Shiliu has to make everything around him invisible, has to block the sounds of his movements too, the sounds from himself, hide his killing intent, and and and… and even then Zoro tanks everything with 50 liters of bloodloss

So do we think Gecko Moria will have his fruit taken??? or will he take Black Beards offer and join?

I wouldn't join someone who just murdered my subordinate.
I think it was most likely to add Moria into the current arc, Pelona is on the move, there's still quite some time for the fire festival to begin and as Beka mentioned, Oda is kinda trying to reedem Moria with him casually saying 'I did something bad to this people'.
My guess is, either Moria willingly searches for Luffy's aid, or he randomly arrives Wano wounded and whatnot. -
New column came out the other day. All anime, no manga stuff.

Oda actually killing off Absalom is one thing, he was a complete creep of a character Oda didn't even like, and we had to lose some named character to the BB pirates eventually.
But I think Moria is too big a deal to kill him off camera like that… otherwise why have him survive the war at all and go into hiding for the last 10 years of real time? Plus Moria has the best use of the DF in animating zombies, not something anyone else could do without Hogback's help. Plus having Perona learn he's still alive only to just lose him again? I don't think Oda has that in him.
-
Question about your Anime column's Greg. Why do they seem to be so much later than the actual debuts of the episodes? I'm assuming they're synced to something I'm not familiar with.

Good points!
what do you guys think Oda will do with Gecko Moria now? will he help Luffy against Kaidou? become a commander in the straw hat GrandFleet? where is Oda going with his story?
and are there any other DF's we know about that would probs be hunted by the Black Beard Pirates?
EDIT: also I've heard Oda likes to play Video games, is he a Nintendo fan? has he played the new Super Smash Bros or Zelda Breath of the wild?

Working on exactly that problem at this very moment and it's precisely why I'm doing anime-only for a speed-up of sorts. Reason is because some might recall the column was on a hiatus a while back and while that didn't affect the manga thanks to breaks, etc. the anime is a new episode pretty much every week so it got WAY ahead. So while the manga columns are written for recent chaps, I should catch up early next year.

I can't wait to see what Greg thinks about Shiryu getting the clear clear fruit
I mean I think almost everyone was expecting him to get the diamond diamond fruit

yeah, we all just went along with it at unison, we didn't see it coming.

I mostly advocated for the phoenix fruit.

Always found it amusing that everyone took it for a given, so it not happening was a pleasant surprise. But that's how I feel about most theories involving Zoro/Shiryu/Mihawk.

Same, my main point was that unexpected developments could occur. And that I personally liked the idea of Mihawk getting outplayed not by the diamond but phoenix fruit.
But ultimately, I still think Shybum to be a mere appetizer.

Thank you for your patience.
The latter half of 2018 (literally up to hours before the stroke of midnight on December 31st) was very much a challenge for me health-wise and my family as a whole.
I hope that I've left the majority of that behind me (albeit some insidiously timed food poisoning which made our last day of vacation and the 20-hour bus-wait-plane-wait-plane-bus-plane-bus-taxi back to our front door a true challenge) with the previous year which means a little bit more time to settle down and talk One Piece in a relaxed and enjoyable form.
Can someone update me on this Red Hawk theory?
I'm uncomfortable blatantly stating my theory because I'm starting to gain confidence in it and as time goes on, like many of my theories that comes to fruition, people tend to grow rather 'raw' when I nail things on the head.
I feel that I need to state and restate this each time but this is different from information that I'm privy to prior to its official release. In fact, this is a good time to discuss that since Vivre Card has finally settled it, Jinbei joining.
I have tried to avoid discussing the next crew member of the Strawhats for several years now and that's because it was brought to my attention from internal sources who, why and how the next crew member would be joining the Strawhats. Aside from perhaps the most campy of, "Gee I wonder if!"-type articles on OP.com I haven't addressed the topic in earnest for a good long while and that's why.
That's not the case with my Red Hawk theory but just the same, I'm not comfortable simply throwing it out there. Just know that like my convoluted Dragon/Kaido, Sanji/Cake, etc. theories, this is something that could be exactly what happens, a variation of what happens OR completely off like why I suggested Momonosuke knew Roger.
….which....by the way...may not have come into play how I thought there, but I'm still of the mindset that such a 'power' does indeed exist in that world so I'm not giving up on it yet even if it doesn't apply directly to Momonosuke/Roger.
Right, so...
Oda needs an end-game power-up for key members of his cast.
The gears are and will continue to be excellent. But they're just diversions. He needs a way for his end-game players to truly wow the readers.
Many would consider this Awakening but let's face it, the end of One Piece is much farther away than we thought it was as recently as two years ago.
He needs his so-called 'Super Saiyan 3' (I wouldn't say Potara) to make everyone's jaws drop collectively around the world. Something that's been in front of us the entire time, for 20+ years, but we simply never considered because it's, well, because it's just too damn simple.
As I brought forward here:
http://one-piece.com/special/greg/detail/20181205_0971.html?l=enWe've seen that Luffy seems to have some small part of Ace's ability.
Interestingly enough, the climax of Kaizoku Musou brings this ability to the forefront in its story mode finale.
Now, I'm not about to call that game canon material, but here's something I will confirm, more often than not, peripheral materials such as films or games are created with insider confirmation about what will/won't be possible in the future of the series. This is the same as, for instance, when Oda approves certain Devil Fruit abilities for non-FILM series movies. So it would be wise to consider that what seemed like an absurd moment in Kaizoku Musou, is actually something that is based on an eventual canon concept that simply hasn't had a chance to be revealed or expanded upon in the series. So, if we're to ignore the concept that Luffy producing fire in that sense has a scientific explanation (as opposed to friction on the ground when he runs like in Punk Hazard) then we're left with the only possibility that somehow Luffy inherited some of Ace's ability at his time of death, similar to how Blackbeard did with Whitebeard. I'm not suggesting that it's exactly the same, simply that the idea of an individual having more than one Devil Fruit might be a similarity between these two individuals. Blackbeard has an 'unusual' body but do we know exactly what's unusual about it? Furthermore, besides what we recognize as 'human' can we definitively say what is 'usual' for the people of this world? My point is, Oda's vagueness leaves many options and doors open to him in terms of what 'unusual' means. It could be something we see plainly or it could be something we could never see without medical knowledge, but Marco, a doctor himself, was able to understand this 'unusual' aspect of Blackbeard's body.
We've seen proof of BB using more than one power.
We've seen hints that Luffy can…'willingly?' (he named the attack) at least partially use more than one power.
Do these two have anything else in common? Yes.
'D'.
I think this is a good place to leave this for now.
-
Not that I am against it Greg and that Luffy could have more than one powers like Teach for reasons.
But the Mera Mera is still a thing given to Sabo.
That would mean that even if Teach have stolen various powers the DF itself could still be out somewhere for someone to eat
-
As of now, I'm not too open to it. Maybe, if it weren't for Sanji flaming up with friction as well.
But sure, Oda and ability consistency… shrugs

I like the idea, especially with how it relates to theories about D, Joyboy, and Luffy as folks in the business of making true lasting bonds and bringing people together.

Great to hear that you're feeling much better Greg. Hope you continue the year with a good bill of health!

Didn't Whitebeard say Teach isn't a true "D"?

Didn't Luffy originally do Red Hawk underwater? Even for Oda physics that's crazy.
(And the anime doubled down on showing Ace imagrey with the move, but that's the anime so shouldn't count for much)
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Many would consider this Awakening but let's face it, the end of One Piece is much farther away than we thought it was as recently as two years ago.
It's funny, but it feels like I've been saying "there's at least 10 years to go…" for some time now. I think my estimates used to be "15 years" though. For a while I though chapter 1200 would be about right. That'd be a 25 year run and a decent volume number. But no way it finishes before year 30 at this point. it just doesn't seem like it'll be quite that soon anymore, no matter how much Oda says he's close to the finish and what he skims over.
It looked like we were finally whittling it down some and I'd be able to start safely saying "seven or eight years left" , but then the Big Mom arc went for a really long time, and then none of the Big Mom arc stuff finished on its own... which means that when it comes up again, (Elbaf?) whatever that arc is, will probably be longer by a year as a result. Kind of crazy.
Granted, Oda is the author and he knows his own plans, so it's possible one of the big remaining arcs will just be a short 10 chapter side thing, but...
At the very, very least at this point...
Wano-2 years (We're already a few months in)
Elbaf- 1 year maybe 2 now with BM involvement and possibly meeting Shanks there
Random- 1 year. Stuff we can't account for. Vegapunk, bonus island Oda has kept as a surprise, Revolutionary arc, Thriller Bark esque surprise,, cool down adventure, etc.
Raftel-1 year (Assuming the big event isn't the island, but the war it kicks off. But maybe have a lengthy Roger flashback or world history in there.)
Final war-3 years including a solid year of 1 on 1 fights for the crew, ancient weapon battles, Im, and Marines vs. Marines... 3 years would actually be quick for all that needs showcasing.
Aftermath-6 months, a year(Note that when I say "year", that's shorthand for about fifty chapters, so "2 years" is a guess of about 100 chapters. Given Oda's consistent breaks, that same period can be months longer. So a year is a year and three months, two years is two and a half years, etc.)
I can't see it being any less than 8 years at this point, about 400 more chapters yet, and the guess still being about 10 years feels right. I used to assign a full two years to "random" but we've done Reverie now, and all the loose BM threads mean there's room elsewhere that need to be shuffled. And I can easily see the final war going much longer if Oda does the "showcase every character ever one last time" thing. If every supernova and former warlord and hero marine gets a showcase fight, even a really short one, 3 years is a bare minimum expectation. Once upon a time when Oda's plan was still a 5 year plan, the entire final year was slotted for the resolution. So if it was meant to be 1/5 of the series at the time, you can only imagine what it might be now. Especially if he's pulling out all stops with Kaidou. It probably won't still be 1/5 the series at the current series scale, I don't imagine even Oda dragging a war out for 7 years, but.... 4 or 5 years sure.

So Greg, is it still top secret the reason why Oda doesn't include Jinbei in manga materials ?
As for Devil fruit i think Kishifo has a strong point. Does it mean two people can share the devil fruit power ? I think this would be like the fruit respawn theory, something not really to my liking
-

What is the fruit respawn "theory." It seems pretty certain that whatever power inhabits devil fruits transfers to the nearest applicable fruit after its user dies based on what happened with Smiley. We can be certain that it has to be a specific type of fruit as well since Devil Fruits can be identified through a certain book. Is there a different theory or opinion that goes against these 2 details?
-
I'm trying to envision what a powerup with Ace's fire entails for Luffy that goes beyond what Red Hawk already is. Does it mean adding flames to his big attacks in G4 and whatever powerup he gets beyond that?
On the one hand, I think that could work really well visually – flames erupting from Kong Organ would be really cool. But in terms of practicality, I don't know if that powerup elevates him above the big bads in the series.
Although we've seen with Sanji that flames can equal a power boost.

yes, that is the theory as we understand it so far and I don't like it like a few other readers too. But we will see Vegapunk soon and he will explain it all…
-
Didn't Whitebeard say Teach isn't a true "D"?
think of it like this
The family Z are know for being savage warriors
one child is born and he'd rather write books and hates violence
the village elder catches him one day and goes like "you're no true Z"
now that doesn't mean he doesn't belong to that family line, but it means that he's an outsider to that name, not a true member. -
iirc isn't it not that Teach isn't a 'D', WB simply said he wouldn't be the one to inherit that will or something, no? (Me being lazy not checking as I lay here dying of food poisoning)
Anyway, if Teach wasn't a D then my theory would be even more terrifying if he was indeed a 'T'.
As for Sabo having the fruit, that's not a huge issue in my mind since
1. We've seen synthetic same or same-ish abilities. The will of the universe doesn't seem like it would stop that.
2. Luffy isn't becoming a whirling dervish of pure flame. He seems to have inheritted a teeny-tiny portion of the ability. -
Orochi's character could go in either direction, but right now do you expect him to be a serious threat despite his appearance, or just an arrogant fool?
-
Thing is, Law.
If this kind of inheritance of powers was a thing, then someone would have mentioned how Law is eerily silent sometimes, just for foreshadowing sake.
Yeah, the mechanics could mean "dying in their arms/direct contact", but mechanics are on the side of the author, if oda decides "near" is near, just like the apple of the salamander fruit was nearby, not on top of Smiley. And there is the fact that Diable Jamble exists.
-

No because Oda.
Any myriad of explanations why it did/didn't happen there. Saying it's impossible because of Law is every bit as limiting as, "Cake theory is stupid because Big Mom is baaaaaaad!"
Diable Jambe is clearly portrayed as friction and b burning heart.
Red Hawk is still portrayed as mysterious in nature.
As for Orochi, like with Spandam, some of the most threatening villains are arrogant ones.
I would love for him to dock with Kaido and create Yamata no Orochi. He might not be threatening alone, but he might be a nuisance for any semblance of strategy/teamwork against Kaido.
-
i don't know, if it was the only crazy thing with devil fruits why not, but Doflomingo one alone has a bunch of mysterious abilities. So to me, Red Hawk felt in that category and i didn't question it further.
-
Thank god that atleast someone else felt that Spandam vibe Oro-dude was sending out

This is how we get taken by complete surprise from stuff in front of our face for a decade like Garp.
My point is, Oda is always trying to bait and switch or misdirect the readers.
We've been shown very clearly that Diable is a mixture of friction and Sanji's burning heart which are points that have been addressed both visually and jokingly.
So…don't you find it a bit odd that he's never once addressed Red Hawk?
I don't expect to win over anybody with this theory at this junction but it'd be great if you remember it down the line.
-
But most did feel it, it was just also being pointed out that there was just enough not to immediately write him off just yet.
I never really got the notion that comparing him to Spandam was writing him off. Spandam was (to me atleast) an incredible villain, a truly legendary bastard. But i'd have to say that who i think oro-dude really reminds me of is prince john from disney's robin hood. Usurper, hoarding wealth, a silly hedonistic dude who is also incredibly cruel and vain regarding his reputation. Like i can just see Oro-dude running out of his chamber screaming guards guards when the heroes come too close for comfort just like in that disney flick. Like him as a powerful lord does not seem even remotely as fun as this silly serious schemer who's milking his golden Kaido ticket for all it's worth with no regard to what's left after he's gone. Raise the taxes on Nothing-wano-ham! Triple them! While he's drunk in his castle surrounded by his bootlickers.
-
Well, Ashura is a fat ass who was introduced lying on a bull drunkenly.
Seems a waste to not have Orochi be at least similarly capable.
-

I'm just strictly speaking about Orochi's strength. From what I've seen, when the fandom derisively wondered whether he is "Spandam 2.0", they are first and foremost talking about how strong he is. (And by extension, wondering if he would be Zoro's opponent) I'm sure most people don't have any inherent issue with him sharing a similar personality and such to him, it's just that a lot of people are curious as to whether he is strong on his own, can he take care of himself, etc. Even this discussion here starts with asking Greg's opinion on whether he's a serious threat or not.
I agree that there's no real shame in being similar to Spandam, because like you said, he made for a good villain. I'm just saying that the fandom has made it pretty clear what they mean when they wonder if he is "Spandam 2.0". So going off of that perspective, that's what I mean when the chapter gave us just enough to not write him off just yet.

I was always under the Impression there may be a Will of D transformation, kinda like the super saiyan of One Piece
and Luffy and Black Beard might both achieve it

Wowzers… I think I'm won over. Teach and Luffy both having "strange bodies" and that being a factor with inheriting powers or having multiple powers? Yes please! Man if that came to be there would be several moments in the story that would now hold even more meaning. Remember when Luffy beat Cracker and needed a quick rest to digest Cracker's biscuits? Luffy loses weight before Nami's eyes and she says something to the affect of "is that how the human body works?" I'd chalk that up to subtle foreshadowing and that is probably only one of the more recent examples.
I'm all for this theory only I feel like setting ones appendages, weapons or full body aflame without harm is also some kind of learnable technique within the One Piece world.
Sanji - At first with friction and passion, now it seems only with passion. Only the anime spins him around still right?
Mariegold - Used matches but found a way to protect her body from harm and I doubt it was due to just her model of snake skin protecting her.
Baldy Cigar(White Beard Commander)- Had a flaming sword and seemed to be able to ignite it at will.
Daruma(New Fishman Pirates) - Was able to spontaneously combust much like Luffy and Sanji seemingly does now.
Kinemon - Does he just cut fire? Or can he wield flaming swords on a whim as well?
Regardless of what ever reasons are given for why these characters can do what they do with fire I am all for more shared traits between Luffy and Teach.

Luffy's next "upgrade" will be Elizabello's King Punch incorporated into his attacks: why else would Oda have Luffy directly comment on it during the tournament? Oda even gave us a hint via Gatz: "the punch is supposed to take down an emperor, but only if it connects".
I figure the "light version" for Luffy's "regular" attacks and the "full version" for the more heavy hitting attacks. Obviously, Luffy won't need an hour to "recharge" …

Isn't it just a punch? It's not some special technique. It's his innate strength.
I remember Robotnik talking about how he was a strong king not how he created some secret technique. And I don't think anyone refers it as technique rather than brute strength.
-
Robby, Kid just show the digesting ability recently so it's not a D specific one :-)
Greg, I'm glad when Oda manages to surprise me with things which should have been obvious. I am less when he is hidding things on purpose in unsubtle ways like for Raizou.
So if end to be right I will blame Oda for writing thing i dislike not you to have guess things correctly :-)That said, yes redhawk is not explained. But like i said in my previous post, it's by far not the only thing unexplained in One Piece. In fact that's where Oda is very clever, he knows that in a serie as ambitious as One Piece, the less he tells, the more freedom he has. Another strength of the serie is that Oda has kept the fight mechanism very simple. Most of it rely on devil fruit and the 3 categories with one of them authorizing anything he wants to (sugar i look at you…) and if it wasn't enough he takes liberties in the powers of the fruit (doflamingo i look at you...). We even have 2 dinosaurs categorized as dragon fruit. Isn't that crazy :-)
That super simple mechanism allowed him to not bother to much about power levels and having his heroes fighting stronger and stronger foes without to much plot issues in contrast with others nekketsus.
You may ask what is my point. Well it is that, in my opinion, every time Oda has chosen to get out of this simple mechanism or to explain things, he has weakened his serie. The haki was the first nail, then we have some awakened fruits, the respawn in the nearest fruit. Should i add Big mum eating Caramel which seems to completely contradict one of his SBS.
Most of those are yet to be explained more in detail so i still can give doubt benefice but your theory would fall into that category. It expands the devil fruits ability outside of its original principle. And for me it's not a good move from the author, especially if the goal is just to surprise the reader. -

Don't think so: after all, Elizabello needs one hour preparation to be able to use the "full version". You know … the one that blew away Pica's huge statue airborne pieces that Zoro had cut ...
Now imagine Luffy using it in conjunction with his gears ... minus the preparation time, ofc: a gear 2 pistol with "light version" could possibly be as strong as a "hakified" gear 3 elephant gun (or something along those lines), and if you scale that all the way to gear 4's attacks ... well ... you get the picture ...

Their powers don't appear to be innate, they stem from the suits and Ichiji is the flamey one.
Kdom, it doesn't expand them beyond their original concept because it's one he's hcd in mind the entire time with a hint to that end right in front of us the whole time.
However, the weakness of Haki is a completely valid point. Luckily this isn't some vague concept.

How do you reconcile this with the other innate elemental abilities unconnected to DF abilities? IE
Fire: Luffy, Sanji, Doflamingo, Katakuri
Electricity: Law, the Mink Tribe
Water: Fishmen
Air/Wind (?): CP9’s Rokushiki techniques (Leg Blade/Finger Gun/Moon Step)
Earth (?): Armament Haki & TekkaiMaybe there are others I’m forgetting? I always found it strange, but if Haki is a secret ability fueled by the strength of one’s ambition it wouldn’t be unreasonable for other innate abilities to be powered by some intrinsic trait (i.e. passion).
Got me thinking about the title “Burning Blood” too.
-
Not sure of the ethics behind quoting from another thread, but Greg and everyone else, what do you think about this:
Oda just revealed Fifth Gear.
I don't know why we didn't see it coming before. Fifth Gear is going to be Luffy willingly utilizing fire (a la Ace/Sanji/Doflamingo/Katakuri).- Second Gear - Fourth Gear gave Luffy a smoke shroud.
- After the timeskip, Luffy can produce fire via Red Hawk.
- Fourth Gear - Snakeman gives Luffy a smoke AND fire shroud (as evidenced by the cover of Vol 89).
It's likely unlocked through passion or the power of your heart (as Oda mentioned in an SBS when a reader asked why Sanji could light himself ablaze). This means that Sanji was the first Straw Hat to unlock it (when he had to protect the people he cared about most–Nami and Robin) and Luffy unlocked it after he failed to protect Ace. Other characters have also used this in the series. Doflamingo uses Overheat and Katakuri uses Burning Mochi.
Well done, Oda.
EDIT: The Fire Festival is the perfect place for this to be unveiled. Combined with Ace’s history on Wano (how does he tie to the card theme—was he affiliated with Kaido at one point?) I’m sure we’re in for an amazing arc.
Not sure if this would be Gear 5, but it would be pretty cool if this is more foreshadowing of Flame Luffy. It also reminds me of the Volume 27 cover where a winged Luffy is winking (presumably at us, the reader). Not sure if there are other instances of him winking on volume covers or in colorspreads in this same manner, but if not, I would be amped if it is indeed foreshadowing, not only for Fire Luffy, but for what this might mean in regards to theories about the D folks.

Not sure of the ethics behind quoting from another thread, but Greg and everyone else, what do you think about this:
Not sure if it's up yet but my thought for Gear 5th is the pamphlet that Kinnemon is dispersing.

I always figured gear 5 would be his awakening
