Just for clarification: Is Wano undergoing a famine, or is it just O-Tama not wanting to eat for some reason?
Usopp made it clear in this chapter that she only eats rice 2 times per year, like it's somethign special. She works all day and can barely buy food.
The World Government is bad. :wassat:
but, Wano is not affiliated with WG.
And, for a story that goes this long, at the last part of its stories where everything is "world" changing level of events, is it really bad and weird is the story revolving around big and very important group of people with power? not counting Emperor ruling/invading countries/islands has been set up for years. Or Kaido have a lot of factories in some parts of the world which might have some kind of negative impact to the peoples and environments? and couple chapters ago, we already saw that Wano is not in tragic or starvation state. Its looks really good and harmony. I understand there is always issue somewhere even in the most peaceful country but ignoring everything and just focus on "oppressed country" looks weird to me.
Dangit…I was eating when I read this chapter. Now I feel bad.
Tama seems nice.
@S.C.:
Just for clarification: Is Wano undergoing a famine, or is it just O-Tama not wanting to eat for some reason?
Probably not Wano as a whole, but this part of the country– probably yes
Remember Momonosuke crying when Sanji cooked a lot of thing to eat at the end of PunkHazard ?
So, O-tama's DF is probably an ability to tame Pokemon, I mean, to make allies by making them eat her dumplings? That can be a very powerful ability!
Do they have to be twins? Why not just siblings lol?
I DON'T MAKE THE RULES!!!
… but I guess that could work as well. I mean, they would need to be born very close to each other, but we can't really be surprised by that coming out of the Big Mom arc... or they could siblings of different mothers, with Oden having concubines.
So, O-tama's DF is probably an ability to tame Pokemon, I mean, to make allies by making them eat her dumplings? That can be a very powerful ability!
"Safari Zone is so easy"
I said in the spoiler thread that perhaps "she can't eat her own food that she makes from herself," as my own theory—which honestly could be a side-theory off the probable main-theory (but-still-my/others'-own-theory-since-nothing-has-yet-been-stated-in-the-manga) being that it detracts from her own nutrition. Again, not sure if either of 'my' theories could be actually the case.
But then someone soon after said, "Anyway the implications of this girl's devil fruit powers could be grim. She can make food out of her own flesh to feed to others, but she cannot feed herself with it. I'm digging Oda's hot streak of cannibalism lately." I feel like they were skimming over my post and then somehow got the idea that she definitively cannot eat her own supply of food, as if it's some kind of absolute canon. Anyway, just wanted to clear that it's not.
(Actually, I just realized they said "could be grim," lol. Not sure if (since I didn't read the whole spoiler thread) I was the first to think along the topic of cannibalism, which then spread to their post/thinking.)
Further along these lines, there'd be no point in feeding oneself from one's own food-flesh unless there's even yet another imaginary idea (my own theory again) stating that she can only supply a limited growth before it becomes negligible. That'd be weird to wrap one's head around, but this is just my imagination going wild with the potential of this idea of the new ability shown in this chapter. Bottom line: 'obviously' there's huge limitation of it, or famine wouldn't be a big impact.

Chapter 654, when they got caught by the White Strom https://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/654/10
First of all xhat a wonderful introduction chapter this was. Ok again it is the same pattern straw hats split and not long after they find a person in trouble and the typical good vs evil struggle story where luffy is helping the weak and good. So that is a clishe that oda is just using too much but apart from that wonderfully done. First you wonder what ape and komainu are about then you learn about it slowly as you also wonder who is inside the bag. You learn and immediately more mysteries pop up with this clan and master of this young girl. To wrap it all up basil hawkings is shown working for kaidou. I do find it a shame thouh as i would love to see him being an independent pirate working for himself and to see that he is one of kaidous goons is a bit sad. I am really interested in the next chapter.
Don't forget, the sudden Ace mention!
Loved the colorspread - beautifully drawn and has a very classic, old school OP feel to it. No Jinbe, but I've pretty much given up on seeing him drawn as part of the crew until he's made his return and been properly inducted by the full group, probably the end of Wano. But then, who knows, maybe Wadatsumi will need someone to escort him to the dentist and that'll push it back to Elbaf, or something… >_>
Nice to get a little flashback showing how the crew split up. Absolutely adore the Sunny's face-fault at nearly being abandoned in the whirlpool, and it's good to know that Sanji and the others are all together. Obviously it'll probably be a while before Luffy meets up with them, but hopefully we'll get some parallel storylines following the Swirlyhats, the Swordhats, and Luffy himself until they all meet up again.
Really liked Luffy's beatdown of Kaidou's goons, showing off his newly-expanded mastery of Observation Haki (as well as his ability to stare animals into submission). O-tama is a cute kid, as expected. Curious as to the nature of her powers - was initially thinking her ability to create food (or kibi-dango, at least) drew on her own body's food stores in the process, which would explain why she was starving, but with the taming of the baboon and the connection that act supposedly has to the Momotarou story, it may be more specialized than that... Speaking of starvation, some people were speculating famine, but I didn't see much evidence of that in what (admittedly little) we saw of the general populace when the Swordhats were reintroduced. It looks more like simple poverty if she's supporting herself by weaving hats - doubly so given that she's living essentially alone in/near an abandoned village. Don't know what to make of her tengu "master" yet, but he seems to be concerned with her well being, at least.
Going to be interesting to explore her connection to the Kouzuki clan. I imagine O-tama and Momonosuke will be certain to meet and interact at some point, so I'm interested in seeing what sort of relationship they will ultimately forge - though, to be fair, I'm already internally shipping Momo/Tama for a post-series, 10-years later epilogue montage. By the same token, very interested to hear about her promise with Ace.
Lastly, not particularly surprised to see that Hawkins is currently working for the Beast Pirates. With Kaidou literally dropping in from the sky on them, he and Apoo probably bent the knee quickly to ensure their own survival. At the same time, I haven't got the impression that any of the Supernovas are particularly interested in serving a Yonkou long term, so Hawkins testing the boundaries of his subservience by withholding information isn't unexpected.
Overall, a good, solid early-arc chapter.

Chapter 654, when they got caught by the White Strom https://www.mangareader.net/one-piece/654/10
Nice, completely forgot about it. Thanks for digging it up for me!
Wano is going to be NUTS in One Piece!
Its being hyped as the part 2 equivalent of the marineford arc in part 1. A battle larger than any in all of One Piece. An Arc larger than Dressrosa! And man, does it show already with the seeds being sown. Hawkins and Apoo sided with Kaido to avoid being defeated, but both could betray him. Kidd refused to even tho his two allies did and thus is Kaido's prisoner. Drake works for Kaido. Luffy and Law's alliance is against Kaido. Thats so many of the worst gen in one place already! Its also been implied the Strawhat Grand Fleet will be assisting Luffy, Zoro and his crew against Kaido as well! Jeez, this arc is HUGE.
As for this chapter, I see they took no time introducing the Rebecca, Vivi, Shirahoshi, bunny girl, etc of this arc. Record timing! Its an okay chapter, albeit too by the numbers. Oda needs more originality. This arc shows a strong amount of promise though, as I said before!
You must have super human eyes then. I can't see a thing in chapter 903 O_o
Are we talking about the last page, the cliffhanger?
Nevermind, for some reason, when the Sunny is jumping, I though the bottom half of its mouth was open super wide, eyes popping. Maybe it was another panel.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Funny that Blissed thought so too.
An early chapter?
Nice. :)
It was fun and hopefuly O-Tama won't be a Rebecca-type character.
We had enough of those.
And Hawkins is back, let's hope he will side with Luffy against Kaido!
So I guess she can’t eat her own dangos then
I was wondering about that, I guess not since she is starving. However I am curious what would happen if she did.
The big worry I have now is that the Beasts Pirates aren't going to be as interesting as Big Mom's crew. They all wear the same outfits, have the same sadistic personality, probably all just Zoans, etc.

Huh, but it did make the eyes-popping face
Am I the only one who had a Miyazaki vibe from this chapter ?
Especially from those pirates on the beach, and the humanitarian theme about famine.
! I cut off the recording after the 2nd to last page and rather than re-edit it I just decided to do a review. If you've ever seen me do any of these before let me know if you prefer this style and I feel I went deeper story-wise into how I feel it's unfolding.
I really liked this chapter and it's atmosphere a lot, especially with the design of the environment.
Nice to see utilization of luffy's future sight, to show us that oda didn't forget it. Why dodge a bullet when you can knock out the shooter before he even takes a shot.
A bit dialouge and exposition heavy in places but I still thought it was done well enough. Plus having a rambling geezer helps take the sting away and makes the talk seem natural.
I haven't seen anybody on here discuss it but I wonder how is luffy gonna tell her that ace is dead. That's gotta be tough for him especially since she's staying there to wait for him.
It's like if the person Laboon was waiting for was dead. Well I guess he is. Yohohohoho. It's still gonna be sad though.
I don't think Basil has a plan but he may want to keep his options open and not tell kaido IE look the other way.
Am I the only one who had a Miyazaki vibe from this chapter ?

agree with you and a bit of pokemon too with little girl using balls to befriend monster
So where's Brook? Sanji grabbed Nami, Carrot, and Chopper, and Luffy's on his own, but Brook's fate was left uncertain. I smell a plot point for that coming up.
Also, the reveals in this chapter did not surprise me in the least. We knew Ace had been to Wano, and the moment he mentioned making Bamboo hats, I knew that Ace would be name-dropped after they specifically mentioned the small backstory of Ace making a Bamboo hat for Oars III. I am interested to see what influence Ace's presence in Wano had, though.
@Fire Fist:

Brook's with them lol, Oda just didn't show it. You can tell easily just by the fact that Luffy was the last to attempt to leave.
During translation is the Kibi dango from OTama mean ki -vital energy? so that is the reason why she can give it to others but not to herself, it's like she is giving her own vital force through this action, that is totally not cannibalism as i read on the thread.
I also saw an interesting thing about O-Tama, she might not be Momo's twin but probably is a kunoichi in training to protect momo?
I'm sure she and Momo are close but since the coup d'etat they got scattered and Kaido is trying to get rid of them for the Shogun.
So Tama tamed a dog and a monkey, we should probably expect a pheasant soon too. Also excited to see One Piece's Onigashima
If only we got the Momotaro from Hozuki no Reitetsu to go with the companion animals.
lol people still think there's a famine.
Just like Apoo, Hawkins refers to his new captain as Kaido-san instead of Kaido-sama. Does this mean that when you have a certain rank in Kaido's crew you can talk a bit more casual to him? But Sheepshead, who apparently has/had the same rank as Hawkins, used sama when he talked about him. I wonder if this will have any relevance.
Hint: In a famine you don't buy rice at the local market. There is no rice at the local market.
I think we all understood that the "famine" was something caused by Kaido to rule over the population, or it's something about those "factories". Or both.
Obviously, this is going to be an arc about farming and Nami pouring rain on the fields

The gender role are inverted compared to the Alabasta arc. We have to acclaim Oda's genius for that
Tama is the new Koza, and Momonosuke is the new Vivi.
At least Koza was charismatic. He's one of the rare non-fighter characters that I like, along with Nefertari Cobra and Iceburg
@Monkey:
Hint: In a famine you don't buy rice at the local market. There is no rice at the local market.
Or there is but it's limited and expensive, only rich people can afford it. Not that it has to be full famine, but for sure they have some food or money problems there.
Kaidou and shogun raised the prices for food and everything so they can buy materials to build weapons from other countries. With how king of underworld and cc provided kaidou artifical zoans and stuff, I don't think doflamingo was doing it for free. And with how oda said kaidou is more like mobster then pirate, he didn't just take over wano for the sake of it, he it taking their money and people to build him weapons.
Anyway, didn't they talk about some lurking legend a while ago that straw hats will meet and oppose and is related to whitebeard? Where did that guy go?
I got a lot of Water 7 vibes from these chapters. At the beginning of the arc we meet a weird creature with unclear intention (Sumo Frog, Kabuki Octopus) then we meet a cute kid and her guardian who are tied to the island's past (Kokoro/Chimney and Otama/Tengu). Could be just coincident but Water 7 is my favorite arc and I surely hope Wano manages to deliver at least 60-70% of its greatness.
Some dialogues and expositions about Otama are way too rushed but I guess it's better than dragging her subplot out.
IMO Dressrosa was our Water 7 of Part II and Wano will be our Marineford of Part II. the set ups and themes all match up for that to be the case for both Dressrosa and what we know so far about Wano
i just hope oda does not turn every supernova into a "friend" of the strawhats
i just hope oda does not turn every supernova into a "friend" of the strawhats
Hawkins probably suspects SH are involved and wants to ally with them against Kaido.
More than likely that he didn't have other choice but to kneel. Well that or get beaten up like Kid.
Liked this chapter.
@uniaka:

Famine breaks down society, unless you're in the big city area you don't have a functional rice economy that just happens to have high prices. That's a shortage.
A famine is people dying left and right, ghost towns, cannibalism, hoarding and definitely not goin' down to the ol' market to sell the rice.
Also the landscape in famines is fucked up and dead looking, there's been absolutely zero indication of this.
You guys are extremely resistant to the well established cliche of prideful feudal Japanese characters allowing themselves suffering for honor reasons. Also the idea of poverty I guess.

Or maybe the person with connections to the daimyo family that got crushed and erased, has become destitute because of that? The simpler explanation?
I don't think Hawkins will be an ally, at least not this early. My interpretation of his character is that his decision making is very heavily influenced by his fortune-telling. And odds are that he'll predict that any alliance with Luffy will only have ridiculously low chances of success.
Wano will be our Marineford of Part II. the set ups and themes all match up for that to be the case for both Dressrosa and what we know so far about Wano
Uh…..what? I can't think of remotely a single thing in common.

But it was said she only eats rice twice per year, works hard but can barely afford food. How is that related to pride? And kinemon didn't sho any pride there.
And they made it sound like they just found out about her relation to Oden's clan, because she mentioned it to them now.
@uniaka:
But it was said she only eats rice twice per year, works hard but can barely afford food. How is that related to pride?
It's related to poverty, you guys thinking the Momo scenes had anything to do with famine is not understanding the pride.
And kinemon didn't sho any pride with eating.
Yeah he only showed constant pride against receiving any kind of help early on, even when he was a literal talking head.
But that isn't elevant to your pet theory about a famine, so let's just ignore it.
And they made it sound like thye just found out about her relation to Oden's clan, because she mentioned it to them now.
Random Kaidou mooks passing through the market found out she had connections because she blurted something out.
Explain how this contradicts her falling on hard times due to previous connections with a destroyed feudal house.
IMO Dressrosa was our Water 7 of Part II and Wano will be our Marineford of Part II. the set ups and themes all match up for that to be the case for both Dressrosa and what we know so far about Wano
TBH I'd rather want Wano to be the Alabasta of Part II.
(W7 was much more enjoyable than Dressrosa, anyway…)
Wano is the Wano of Part II
but its got Lizardsaurus, so is also Little Garden half part.
The only 'parallel' I could make between Paradise and New World arcs might be Alabasta and Dressrosa. And even that is pretty thin. Why do we want to look for such patterns?
Nice chapter to me too!
What could have been Oda's inspiration to the physical design of OTama df? I bet it's the feeling you have when you see a cute child and you want to pinch her cheeks from how cute she's.
@.access:
- The true question left out of the chapter is where is the octopus. And too bad the rest of the crew is apparently sticking together, I was hoping Chopper would be left without both Luffy and Sanji to protect him and maybe this could lead to him using the Rumble Ball to protect himself against the Beast Pirates (and then a whole lot of development I am hoping he gets this arc).
Actually I'm buying your idea idea he could be an artifitial devil fruit. Likde the turnip-head from Hawls Castle, a character under a spell.
@Nilitch:
Hawkins is not the strongest supernova. But he definitely is the most beautiful
Sorry but Bunny deserves the title.
Thought Urouge was unbeatable in that matter
Luffy's Observation no-scope was neat, but kicking the lizard's head into the rider's gun and making it explode is one of cooler battle-choreography things in a while. Looking forward to some meaty fights this arc.
The only 'parallel' I could make between Paradise and New World arcs might be Alabasta and Dressrosa. And even that is pretty thin. Why do we want to look for such patterns?
The people into this theory have absolutely no explanation as to why the completely imagined pattern matters or exists, they just seem to think it sounds cool and deep. They cannot answer you.
While it's true that Oda's recycled a lot of his ideas, this whole theory that The New World is a mirror of Paradise is ridiculous. Nobody even considered Punk Hazard a parallel of anything back when it was ongoing.
The only deliberate and obvious parallel (as in, it was actually acknowledged in series) is Alabasta and Dressrosa. And just because of that SUDDENLY every arc is a remake of another arc. The most ridiculous one is the people forcing Zou and Skypeia just because "mysterious island" and "jungles."
did anyone notice one of the bad guy has on his shoulder the logo of the strawhat, kind of weird isn't ?
you can see it just before he get knockdowned by the little girl
I thought Punk Hazard was a parallel of how parallels dont exist.
sort of a Shrodinger's parallel.
