Now for the most important question: is that mobile game canon?
Dragonball Discussion Kai: Broly but this time it's not Broly

I hate that Dragon Ball animation for the movie. Why animation can be like in Dragon Ball Fusion movie? =(
You're crazy, the animation looks great.
And are you asking why it doesn't look like a movie made 23 years ago when the entire anime production industry was completely different and staffed by different people?
Or are you talking about the cgi trailer for the cell phone game and asking why it doesn't look like the cgi from the 3DS game from a completely different company on completely different hardware?
-
Oh yeah, since people are bringing it up, please don't be another Broly movie.
I saw people saying the trailer looks bad here and there, too, and I guess it's the OP movie 6/9 thing again? People don't like the low-detail character design part. This kind of style emphasizes movement rather than art in animation. It's very animator-friendly, giving a lot of freedom to the animators.
It is also very much DB.. just earlier DB/Toriyama's simple modern designs.
-
Does Broly have Ozaru? because that's someone transforming back from it. Most likely not Broly just because the movie is written by Toriyama, pretty sure it's either that Yamoshi guy Toriyama mentioned in an interview, or a villain Yamoshi fought in the past.
Also, the movie looks nothing like OP movie 6, that movie was done by Hosoda who's known for his strict no shadows at all rule, this looks more like the recent OP movies, but you can say it's a similar situation in that the movie is getting a new style the franchise hasn't had in a while.
EDIT: lol, it seems I was wrong and the character was just wearing fur, still looks like a Saiyan to me
-
Oops, completely missed the teaser. Anyways, absolutely love the art style.

I mean the general idea of the style, it's obviously not straight-up Hosoda, but I think the movement above detail kind of idea behind it is similar.
-
The timing seems to be like Oonishi Ryou or Watanabe Koudai. I'm leaning towards the former because of how busy Watanabe and Oonishi have been on PreCure but at the same time Nagamine Tatsuya storyboarded this clip back in October according to a tweet he made back then.
Anyway, Shida Naotoshi likes the design. Hopefully he, Oonishi and plenty of other good animators work on the film.
-

The design is still detailed to be honest, it's just not as detailed as what DB have been getting for the past years. And like I said, it's actually more comparable to the latest One Piece movies than movie 6.
!
While Luffy's costume is busy, it's still pretty light on detail, with barely any shadows in his face, less defined arm muscles, and just one layer of shadows with no highlights.
What I'm trying to say here is, Dragon Ball didn't abandon all the details for the sake of animation, it just dropped the hyper-detailed designs, for a moderately detailed one with a fresh yet nostalgic aesthetic. -
Well yeah, that's what I'm saying. It's not entirely like Hosoda's style, but much simpler than before and probably allows much more freedom to the animators.
It's more like the early Z and og DB/modern Toriyama designs.
-
Toyoturdo having Krillin and Ten eliminated immediately (and Roshi probably quickly following in the next chapter) makes the case to not take Goten and Trunks even worse.
-
I agree, I did not like that Krillin and the rest were taken out so easily in the manga.
Now that the fight is 3 vs 1, I wonder how will they handle the end. I enjoyed the latest episode though, looking forward to the next.
Sometimes I feel that taking the ability to fly away seemed kinda pointless. They do acknowledge it from time to time with how they dodge, but I wish the fight happened more on the ground. Except trying to excuse it with "they are touching the floating rocks". But it is a minor complaint.
-
I really dig how the art style is a throwback to the first round of DBZ animation for the saiyan arc. That in my mind was always the best. The later stuff got too detailed and muscular.
-
@K.:

Watching Super, I always had to remind myself that floating is forbidden because I saw no difference in the fighting style of the combatants. So yeah, that felt rather pointless.
-
Wasn't Jiren hovering during his "I can't be bothered with the scrubs" phase? But yeah the no flying rule seemed largely unimportant since some people were still able to recover after falling off anyways. Should have had a no fly zone if you were off the platform entirely.
-
!
This made me laugh because I remember a Toriyama interview where he said he stopped drawing the Saiyans' tails because it made no sense how it fit with the pants/they became annoying to draw. (I don't remember exactly, tho, so correct me if I'm wrong.)
…and now he just drew a crack in the pants. (It's the main character of the new game Dragon Ball Legends he designed.)
-
Takahashi Yuuya has confirmed that he will be working on the film. This is great news since he's a great action animation and for the two episodes that he acted as an animation supervisor (#114 and #122) he specifically drew everyone as if they had been designed by Yamamuro Tadayoshi for Dragon Ball Z Movie #8-13. Additionally, Ken Arto has confirmed that he has already drawn key animation for the film, which means that production has already started. This is great news since it means there's still a another seven or eight months for the animation to be worked on, as opposed to five or six as I was fearing. With Shida having worked out a schedule to appear on the film, too, we should be in for some great fights!

! Looks like Goku and Frieza sac themselves to take out Jiren leaving 17 to win it all and wish back the other universes. Welp, 17 is by far Super's biggest winner, Jesus Christ!

! So did freeza just decide to be content with dying or what? -
@Long:
! If Goku doesnt get 17 a boat trip I swear to god…
! So did freeza just decide to be content with dying or what?! Herms's summary says that Whis brings Frieza back to life as a "thank you". Frieza claims that he's still going to be evil but Goku says he'll just stop him again if he tries anything, and you know he's already tainted by Goku's nakama power anyway.
! 17 still gets to go on a cruise. -
! Well, shit. That sure was an ending. I hope Freeza's next storyline is more interesting than him simply coming back to Earth and killing Gokuu. Give him a new goal, I say!
-
! There's a cool shot at the end showing Frieza being gleefully evil
! As a giant Frieza fan, I'm a little disappointed that this didn't end with Frieza becoming an evil god, but this is still pretty satisfying -
Wow….I liked it.

! Freeza comes back to life and challenges Goku to a life or death match of curling

! MY BOY 17 GOT HIS BOAT IN THE END I'M SO PROUD
Good ending. Not perfect but goddamn if it didn't leave me satisfied and excited -
Finale was pretty much my representation of Super as a whole. It was far from perfect, but still enjoyable and made me smile like the 7 year old I was watching DBZ on Toonami.
Regardless of peoples opinions on Super as a whole, you have to admit that it put a much needed energy into the franchise that has only helped it.
-
May someone spoil to me who won? :D

! Android #17. Goku and Frieze sacrificed themselves to take out Jiren.
-
I will say the ending was much better than GT final episode.

@S.C.:

Thank you very much, sir!
-
I have to say that I enjoyed the finale of Dragon Ball Super and I enjoy the entire run of Super. Sure, the series wasn't perfect but I enjoy the ride of the series.
! The montage for the ending of the series was nice. I thought Freeza returning to his army was pretty funny.
I can't wait for the new movie now.
-
! What they didn't show this episode is that all the universes that got wished back now have the shape of a Boat.:ninja:

So Dragon Ball Super is over. Been a good ride, some final thoughts below.
Dragon Ball super was a mixed bag of a series. When it was on, it was fucking ON with great fights, action and a decent story. Yet with all the good, comes the bad and the series suffered from bad animation (at the start) two shitty recap arcs of the movies (at the start) and a rather interesting villain in Zamasu, but the Tourny o Power, while about ten episodes too long was a good way to end and succeeded in my biggest wish in having the forgotten supporting cast get their licks in.
The new characters were again a mixed bag. Jiren is boring, Zamasu was interesting, but petered out. Zeno-sama and the Grand priest I feel they are holding back on for future things. Kale and Caulifa are probably the best new characters, and Hit falls somewhere in the middle. More than I expected, so I'm satisfied there.
Super Saiyan Blue kaio-ken was awesome, Ultra Instinct felt like an asspull powerup meant to sell new figurines and merchandise, but lets face it; that was the whole fucking point of the show.
Overall as a lasped Dragon Ball fan who had pretty much moved on from the series after realizing that GT was absolute shit (except for the final arc concept, and the still amazing ending) I'm satisfied with Dragon Ball Super. Is it the great return to form that took me back to my childhood days of watching DBZ on TV?
Not at all, but I never expected that, or anything in the first place, so I walk away with an enjoyable taste in my mouth.
A solid 7/10 overall. Let's hope Toei and Toriyama can keep that ball rolling. That movie looks fucking good.
Series MVP: Android 17, and seriously, does the Japanese fanbase love this character because that is the ONLY reason I can think of to make this all make sense. Where was 17 on the old popularity surveys?
Series Loser: Tien. Sorry dude, the west loves ya, but the east doesn't.
Series Biggest Surprise: Not making the Frieza twist complete ass, even though he's basically now that Orochimaru-esk goodie-bad guy now.
Final word: Ningen.
-
-
I really liked that. Toppo is the unofficial MVP to me. I'm glad they didn't bring 17 back for nothing and Freeza being there "paid off".
Goku didn't master UI. I'm pretty fine with Jiren and it all worked out thematically.
Quick final thoughts:
Tl; dr, I liked it. The start was pretty bad - the movie material was extended pretty poorly and looked like crap, so if I were to recommend it, it's to watch the movies and then start at episode 28. That alone is kind of unacceptable: you shouldn't have to skip the first 28 episodes of a story. But after that, it's a gradual way upwards. The U6 arc is mostly fine, with a pretty exciting final battle. The FT arc is extremely solid up to the last third of the arc, with episode 67 still being the worst episode of the series to me. The ToP is perhaps too bloated of an arc, but I don't really have problems with the pacing because it focused on a lot of different characters and there was always at least one plot thread that kept my attention. I really enjoyed that there was some very solid focus on the other characters and this is the first arc to actually have a conclusion that paid everything off it set up in a fine way.
I liked Super and had fun with it despite the flaws it had - it's firmly in the good, but flawed category to me and… that's also basically my general thoughts on DB as a whole - it's a incredibly flawed series, but I had fun with it as a kid and I have fun with it now for what it has tried to be - I think it has always tried to be a good entertaining dumb action shounen and nothing else and that's exactly what I got with the original and Super. (GT was completely flavourless.) Super gets a little bonus of being more self-aware.
-
Freezer is now in Goku's circle of enemies turned fightbuddies, Pan beat up Vegeta, and 17 got his motherfuckin' boat after being the MVP of the entire franchise.
But most importantly:

LOL, I though the exact same thing as soon as I heard that.
-
I see the "Freeza being Goku's fightbuddy now" opinion everywhere, but that's not the case at all?
He's probably restraining himself/working to be stronger himself until he can do something big against Beerus or Goku.
The one thing I didn't like about the episode was Whis bringing back Freeza. This could serve to create some plot problems in the future if not given any limit.
I also see people complaining about Jiren being drained, but I don't agree with that. What was the point of Ultra Instinct, if it didn't actually effect Jiren all that strongly? We even saw in the last episode that Goku literally took him down. I don't think it's unbelievable he is so drained after that.
-
So basically nothing happened and this whole arc was created just to show the new recolor of Goku, all this fight was pointless.
What a waste of time.
But at least now the DB fanboys have another argument in a Death Battle against Superman… -
The point of this arc, like every other arc in Dragon Ball where people are brought back, is character development. I'm so sick of seeing this complaint with Dragon Ball overall.
An arc is only pointless if it has literally no affect on any of the characters, but most of them had their time and a status quo change.

Dragon Ball and character development in the same sentence is something I never expected to see. Most of the character in this arc are new, they barely had development and the few that had development were boring as hell, for example Jiren Uchiha.
Number 17 was okey, I guess. What they did with Frezzer was horrible…ah yeah, and Goku is now a cartoon of himselfSo yeah...this was pointless
-
I disagree. Every single DB arc has at least some effect that influenced where the story would go afterwards. I think RoF was the closest to not affecting where the story went.
If Goku had never met Beerus, none of this would've happened. If the U6 tournament never happened, Goku would've probably never met Zeno. If Goku didn't bring back Freeza or choose the specific fighters he did, this tournament could've gotten a very different ending. If none of the characters didn't have the character arcs they did, this could've all been pretty different.
You can dislike it, but you can't say it didn't affect anything.
-

And? the tournament would have ended in the same way, nobody died at the end, Frezzer barely had any relevance besides the ending and there weren't any significant change in the characters beside N°17.
Oh yeah, Frezzer is now free after all the horrible shit that he had made in the past because… more fanservice I guess.
The previous arcs were just a showcase of Goku's new hair color. Yeah, they introduce some characters, but they are poorly used, and honestly I feel that I can skip some arcs and I wouldn´t miss a thing, beside the power up that was introduced in that arc (which most likely will be useless in the next arc) -
So who here predicted 17 would be the last man standing at the start of the tournament? What a boss, and the last shot of him is taking a goddamn ride on his motherfuckin boat.
Good ending to a good series. Super's many flaws are well documented but despite a super shaky, borderline DOA start the series grew on me and I started legitimately looking forward to it each week. It gave the franchise a much needed kick in the ass and was a big improvement over GT. I look forward to the movie this year and then whenever the anime returns down the line.
-
So who here predicted 17 would be the last man standing at the start of the tournament?
He won that AP Award for Tournament MVP for a reason.
-

(No sarcasm here - it's always too bad to see that.)
Anyway, time to forget about the series for another 10 years (or a new series in a year or two). Being a passive fan of DB is much more fun.
Who am I kidding, considering how much I got into this series right now, I'll probably be back for the movie and keep up with the news on it.
-
Really liked the finale. The series as a whole was alright. Nothing much i could add to what was said.
Kinda funny how so many of us hoped Gohan would become one of the most powerful in the tournament and in the last episode he didn't even get a line i think?
Oh well … still better than Tenshinhan. -
This time the focused meaningless beatdown did draw me into it's pace and I did enjoy it. Even if it was done like once per episode, and only managed to get me hyped this time and vs Kaleifa, it was worth it, because I knew that those times it would have consequences.
I do wonder if I didn't know it was ending with that clash I would have enjoyed it the same.
Final nitpick: Are 17's wife and children real?
-
For me there is some unsolved mysteries. WHY THE OTHER ZENO WAS CHANGING HIS "POSE" AND MOVEMENTS EVERYTIME THAT THE REAL ZENO WAS MOVING? And why some of the angels looked really evil and strange when their universe was erased?
-
I just wish they gave 17 a real "wish" to give up, it just feels fucking stupid to see 18 crying over him missing a boat trip vs seven restored universes.
Could have been something like his body dying because of some cyborg whatever, or his wife and/or children being dead but the regular dragon balls could not be used for some reason, or… I don't know. Just not the stupid boat.
