Chapter 895: Pirate Luffy vs. Sweet Commander Katakuri
-
-
I can really appreciate the strategy behind Luffy making Katakuri jump through extra hoops to avoid getting hit by the Pythons against a lesser opponent I'd imagine a technique that just leads to a stronger faster follow up attack if it misses would seem unstoppable.
I feel like it's lost on people just how OP this is; it's like playing a fighting game and whenever your opponent whiffs their attack they are rewarded with a faster stronger attack and if they whiff THAT attack then they're rewarded… etc. It's a great way for Luffy to force Katakuri to stop dodging like he likes to do so much and either block or counter attack before the pythons can pick up speed.I am co-signing this so hard! The most disappointing thing about this chapter–by far--is that Oda's art did not do enough to show the benefits/devastation that Luffy's Snake attacks are said to be having. Heck, we shouldn't have been able to see the punches at all (a la Gear 2's jet moves), only the paths they clear as they bounce around picking up speed.

NO! No more random food devil fruits that have to be given extremely nebulous rules to make them useable in combat because otherwise they'd be worthless, please and thanks ;-)
I still haven't forgiven Opera and his stupid burning cream.

Mochi is made out of rice, so that would be really redundant.

@S.C.:

Snow is made out of ice and we had both of those. Don't see why not.
-
@Kaido:
Luffy had his three-factor plan to recover from his injuries. Sanji's cooking, milk rich in calcium, and sleep.
t.
It would not be a stretch to assume that Sanji included some of the recipes he learned from the Trannies. IIRC the recipes were meant to boost people's abilities in a way.
So I can see Sanji including stamina boosting and endurance recipe in the meal he made for Luffy. Especially because he knew Luffy would be true to his word and wouldn't eat anything.
I wonder why Oda didn't include a little scene like that though. It would have made Sanji more meaningful to the plot and it would have been the perfect time to tie back into his 2 year training.

Chapter comparisons! This this was an action-packed and dialogue-light chapter, this is a very short section this week:
- Before hitting Katakuri with Jet Culverin, Luffy says, in the Mangastream version, "There's no point! Stretch all you want! I'll just move faster!" In Jaimini's Box, he says "It's useless! Even though my arm's stretching, it's still still speeding up!" and in VIZ, it's "That won't work! Even stretching, I'll accelerate!"
- Katakuri's attack on Luffy in MS is called "Sliced Mochi: Slayer", "Diced Mochi" in JB, and "Buzz Cut Mochi" in VIZ.

Random thought : what stops Capone from simply dumping the cake at sea and then run for it ? The hunger is already enough to affect Big Mom's physical state and it might be days before anyone can bake another cake, if that's even possible. She would then have all that extra time to further rampage throughout her kingdom and possibly starve to death. Only benefits for him.

His wife is the one making him go through all of this instead of selfishly abandoning this place.
-
He still seems to have the plan to take her down, and knowing what the cake does, she will be in perfect condition for him to strike? Like maybe with his seastone spear he never got to use… I don't think oda introduced that spear so it can never be used.
Leaving it all to chance, maybe streusen will wake up soon and with pudding they could make another one in time. And he seems to enjoy doing it himself, based on what jimbe said about his past.

.He used on Caesar back in Zou.

This chapter was pretty much a failed progress like the other ones… even saw two fails that it simply made me laugh... at the fourth time i read the chapter.
Katakuri <333333333 Even after Guffy's new shit you stand like a king! Oda, mothafucker, that's the way to make a battle! For sure you didn't lie when you said you wanted to do a chapter like this!
I'm most pleased with this battle, after the other 15 chapters of shitty battle, this one makes worth the read and the sight. Now fuck Luffy, wonder what new nerf you would get in order to be defeated by this mediocre guy. -
Like I said in the past, Katakuri fans are turning out to be the worst of the lot. Chapter is good, because Katakuri stood up to G4 and Oda is great, when Katakuri loses, chapter + series is bad and Oda is mediocre. Makes sense.
Word of advice katafans, villains are revered and demonized only for the sake of the protagonist. When you see Oda do this, it so we can understand the scale of what the protagonist is about to surpass. Biging up villains is not to destroy the protagonist and have the said villain take over the protagonist crew. That's not the way stories work.

What do you think the devil fruit buying process for Big Mom is? She puts out orders to the underworld brokers/sellers like, "lookin to buy ONLY FOOD RELATED DEVIL FRUITS! No Zoans or anything that I cannot directly put in my mouth."
Poor Brulee thought she'd be getting a soup logia and instead got a random mirror fruit.! That's how she got the scar from BM u __ u
-
Has anyone proposed the idea that king kobra could make luffys hand extend to swallow katakuri in whole (like a snake), thus making it impossible for him to escape/evade and being bounced through the mirror world inside luffys hand until he smashes him into a wall or something like that?

you will be the first

Its actually reasonable to imagine that BM has put out a standing order for Food related DF in the world. Any pirate that gets one could sell it to BM for big bucks and curry favor with a Yonkou.
I really wish Oda had included 2-3 chapters detailing how a Yonkou's empire actually operates on a day to day basis. We know WCI has ministers but what exactly did they do.
This raises another question for me, do you guys think Luffy and Co. will head straight to Wano or will they start by stopping at various territories controlled by Kadio.
-
Oda says Wano arc start this year, I doubt there will be time to fanny around.
-
He used on Caesar back in Zou.
He just threaten him with it, he didn't use on him, I don't think it counts. As in impale him with it.

Now fuck Luffy, wonder what new nerf you would get in order to be defeated by this mediocre guy.Seems to me that tide is going towards Luffy's favor. Last attack in chapter is portrayed as decisive, but Katakuri already used Diced Mochi on Luffy once and it didn't work. Luffy getting slammed on ground didn't work obviously, because he's made of rubber, despite how impressive it looked. Also Luffy already saw Katakuri performing the technique once before, so I fail to see how could it defeat Luffy there. Could change if Katakuri survives King Cobra and battle goes on.
But there another the problem with the fight - Katakuri have been fighting Luffy for so long that the question is whenever he isn't about to run out of tricks. -Repeating the Diced Mochi attack on last chapter for a decisive blow is a worrying sign in that sense. I think Katakuri have been impressive not just because of his strength, but also because he's been unleashing new techniques and moves never seen before.

It is clearly being used on him. -
It's not clear because of his coat, maybe it just touched him, he would be in real trouble if it really impaled him, considering it's enough just to get touched by non sharp seastone for df users to get weakened like luffy and seastone bars in dressrosa.
The point of the spear was to subdue DF users. And you can totally see he showing signs of being weakened.
Nope, that is not the point. If this spear already did the job it was introduced for, then it would be enough if he has seastone stick. Yet this is clearly a weapon that can be used for more. Similar to how it was with superman and doomsday kryptonite spear, this could even kll df user if you impale him with it.

Last time, not long ago I heard about 2 years. Where did you seen "in 1 year" ?

You know, for all the hype that Blackbeard gets, that's actually a major con that his fruit has when compared to seastone: If he were to touch Whitebeard, Big Mom, or Kaidou (and probably a bunch of other people), they would DESTROY him with their immense physical strength. At least seastone takes their strength away, too. That seastone spear could actually weaken Big Mom enough to be hurt…

That's pretty clever, story-wise! Ditto on seeing the day-to-day operations: It really seems like hierarchies are ever only set up in antagonist organizations to help the Strawhats know who each of them should fight. Except Mont D'or–That guy can bookkeep with the best of them!

I'm gonna reply to you the same way I did the last ruffian:
@Sirxxx:That would involve Luffy finding creative ways to use his ability to gain the edge in combat. You know we don't do that any more! Stop being a rabble-rouser.

Of course you can cut a material with the same said material.

But by all indications, isn't Blackbeard also immensely strong? His two DFs alone wouldn't make him capable of assuming Yonkou status. Even Shanks felt the need to warn Whitebeard about him. His ability to negate an opponent's DF while within melee fighting distance makes it so they have to fight with strength alone, which is probably what he intended because he's also really high up there in terms of power.
Seastone is a rock. You can't make it sharp as a blade.
I think sharpness probably isn't the word you're looking for there. Obsidian (volcanic rock) is, in fact, quite capable of being sharper than a metal blade. It's just far more brittle and would break very easily if used in the same way (not counting if Haki is used on it).
@Long:
They can cut diamonds with other diamonds
I did not know that. Awesome. I think you were closer to what they were trying to get at rather than 'sharpness'. I'm not sure if it's density or durability or something else but probably something along those lines.
-
You can cut anything with haki.
-
So you also can cut haki with haki?
-
So you also can cut haki with haki?
Only if your haki is stronger than their haki
See: Zoro vs. Pica
-
You can't cut poneglyphs with haki.
Just get yourself a poneglyph-armor and be the new pirateking bUcko. -
You can't cut poneglyphs with haki.
Of course you can. The weapon you add Haki to just needs to be made of Ponegyph as well.
-

I'd love to see stuff like this, but knowing some of the people around here they'd scream and cry that things are "too slow" if they get more than 3 chapters where people aren't punching each other.
This raises another question for me, do you guys think Luffy and Co. will head straight to Wano or will they start by stopping at various territories controlled by Kadio.
Definitely straight to Wano. Half the SH crew has been missing for a while; Oda wouldn't want to keep them away for more than he already has to.
-
Cannot wait to see Zoro again, it will be like a new character reveal for me. (The others as well lol)

It'll be like the timeskip all over again
Zoro's missing his other eye, Usopp is even more muscular, Franky has 4 nipple lights, and Robin took some dance classes -
@K.:
You can cut anything with haki.
You can cut anything if you are Zoro.
-
I actually miss Usopp more than the other 3 combined
-

The overreacting and comic relief is sorely missed.

I would like Gear 4th stuff more, if we ended up seeing Luffy switching between Bound, Tank, and Snake, rapidly, and as strategy demands. I wouldn't want it to feel too much like Chopper, but I think it could be cool.

Gear Fourth already feels like Sanji's Sky Walk. I would like interchangeable Gear Fourth forms too since the forms are so similar and don't have emphasized weaknesses thus far.

Luffy's got plot armor… he won't lose thus is boring... the interesting one here is always Katakuri.
As you said, the techniques and moves from him are something else, and such results put him in a high tier... by strength alone, he could overcome Kizaru and Fujitora, leaving Akainu and Aokiji outside solely for his broken ability, imo.Katakuri and Crocodile have been the only antagonist to bring shame on Luffy's first round and new battle mode, both characters have been the stars of their arcs and both characters changed their fight style cause Luffy's endurance made them a new point of view regarding opponents. That is the only thing that makes me sure that Luffy will win this, aside PA (plot armor)... but i still don't want to say that i'm sure that Oda will make Katakuri lose... but i can say for sure that Luffy won't master FS, and that is another good thing cause it makes me recall Zoro Vs Daz's fight, with BOAT (Breath of all things) as power-up... which is much more better than a pitiful nerfing.

@Count:

I remember when Pell said: "This is one of the five abilities that allows you to fly".
Like it was a unique power to travel on the skies… only reserved to those 5 users.Doflamingo, Luffy, Caesar, Kizaru, Ace, Sabo, all Geppou users... damn, what a let-down, even Law putting wings counts to everybody with it; poor Pell, not even death wanted him.
-
@Shobu:
I remember when Pell said: "This is one of the five abilities that allows you to fly".
Like it was a unique power to travel on the skies… only reserved to those 5 users.Pell didn't say it and the quote wasn't that there were only five flight-capable DF's.
The quote was, Pell's is one of five known DF's that allow flight.
There are users we've seen whose capabilities may simply not be known to the world at large but we've had the advantage of seeing.
You need to go back to 1998 to catch Oda on that point when he said his crew wouldn't fly b/c that makes it magical.
Well, he has a pseudo-physics explanation so he tried but he definitely seems to have folded on that general stance.
-
Even the flying the story has now isn't quite Dragonball levels of everyone in the crew using their ki to levitate around the globe at hyper speeds which is almost certainly the story breaking context he was thinking of even then.
It's mostly techniques to keep a couple of them in air for short bursts during a fight. Sustained flight that could cross landmasses is pretty much limited to bird types and Gold Shiki that we've seen.
Similarly "the series isn't going to be a romance comic" means its not going to turn into anything focused on courtship and being sappy and broody about love for extended periods… not that there would never be any romance at all in any context ever and we can still get it for say, the romance of Rebecca's parents, or whatever the hell is going on with Sanji and Pudding.
There's a difference between Oda making a hard "never to be broken" rule, and "general guideline."... and even that is allowed to stretch after twenty years of ongoing narrative and him growing and changing as an author, long as it doesn't actually betray the story as a whole.
(Once upon a time, ALL the weird crazy stuff was going to be explained by devil fruits and that's mostly been the case. But now we've got weird science stuff and haki techniques too. And that's okay. Now, if characters start eating two devil fruits and stacking their powers (other than explicitly different explicitly unusual anomoly Blackbeard) or suddenly every devil fruit user can start swimming, that's a betrayal of a hard rule in the story, and that's iffier. But some growth and change, redinement and development is fine.

I don't see how Luffy not beign allowed to lose makes this fight boring. To me this is one of best fights in OP so far.

I always saw the Five Ways to Fly as the Five Tori Tori Models.

You need to come to terms with Katakuri fans, if he loses, the story is boring, Oda is crap and has lost his edge and they will threaten to drop the manga only the pick it up again the following week.
As far as they're concern, Katakuri should lead the SHs and become pirate king while Luffy's corpse rot in chocolate pools on WCI.
