Oda's Interviews
-
-
Oda calculates his arc length predictions by Frieza minutes.
-
So we currently get about 40 chapters per year. One and a half year should amount to about 60 chapters. Maybe less, maybe more since Oda himself wasn't sure about that…?
Let's see (all of this is of course a quick calculation by me, so take it with huge grains of salt...):
Let's say we still have about 15 chapters to go until Totland ends. Than the question with the Reverie comes up. I really think that Oda has to take some time for this event (and I think Wano will be sandwiched between ending and beginning of the reverie) and expect it to be a change of formula where we may spend some chapters/volumes outside the Strawhats adventure's. So let's add 10 - 15 chapters for Reverie.
I think based on these estimates, another small arc around the length of Zou/Jaya (15-20) chapters could be likely. Or just something akin to the Post-War-arc, where we spend some chapters gpoing all over the New World, watching things happen...
@Count:
Oda calculates his arc length predictions by Frieza minutes.
I still remember being shocked when I found out how quick the whole Namek explosion thing went over in the manga compared to when I first watched the DBZ anime as a child… :ninja:
-
[Correction] Oda mentioned it in the book released 2 days ago. However, it seems this interview itself was held back in June (page 94), which means it will take about another 7 months - 1 year and 7 months to enter Wano arc from now on based on Oda's estimation.
I should be blamed for spreading incorrect information…[hide]https://i.imgur.com/CzhXjdg.jpg
[/hide]Not a big problem Sandman, Thanks ^^
-
I wonder if Oda is obsessive about making sure something special happens in chapter 1000 and he just recently realized he's short about an arc.
-
We can just skip wano, never liked it anyway. Least favorite yonkou, least favorite df based crew zoans, way too many allies and characters and we know how dressrosa handles it, year of zoro, future shogun crybaby pervert 8 years old momonosuke. NO thx.

Omg that sucks! How were you able to read it in advance, I wanna see how bad it is too
-
That's a good news to me because I feared that the end of the WCI arc would be rushed. Now, I'm started to believe that we're going to see more fights besides Luffy's.
-
I actually feel like the pace of WCI has slowed to a crawl. I guess Oda doesn't want to end it just yet :P
-
The estimate is changed by 5 months. That's pretty significant but it also makes speculation more useless than before lol. Now it's 20ish chapters to 60ish chapters and just more vague
-

I might've agreed with you if the cake wasn't suddenly nearly finished as of the latest chapter.

Taito Kubo, author of Bleach, revealed that he has been hating Oda ever since his debut manga was defeated by ONE PIECE in readers' popularity poll.
In 1996, Chief editor Kazuhiko Torishima, known as editor for Dragon Ball, scolded Kubo that his manga was terrible and recommended him to read Dragon Ball and Fist of the North Star **[EDIT]**after returning home. Torishima gave him those mangas' volume 1.
But Kubo didn't read them, thinking "Damn you!!"When Bleach finished in 2016, Oda made a comment, "Thank you for your 15-year-serialization for Bleach, Kubo-san! Take a good rest!"

But Kubo didn't read them, thinking "Fuck you!! I'm Tite Kubo!"
That's how it really happened.

https://www.j-cast.com/2017/11/13313746.htmlMy original reaction was "BUUUURN!", but then I realized it was Kubo himself who revealed those details. I always depicted Kubo as a very presumptuous guy who thought too highly of himself and his work… well, that actually seem to be true, but at least he is aware of those flaws and seem to be able to make fun of himself on that. Good for him.
-

But Kubo didn't read them, thinking "Damn you!!"Wait, Kubo never read Dragonball? That's really surprising.
-
Wow! Thanks Sandman! I never thought something like that would be revealed in these interviews.
It makes sense though because people have egos and so much rides on their work. Even if said jokingly you know there are ton of authors who really do hate Oda for his success.
-
@Big:
Honestly I don't see this as a necessarily bad development. We don't know how big Oda wants to make all of this, but honestly that Ace has visited to Wano was already revealed back during Marineford and I think this offers another great opportunity for the worldbuilding aspect.
I also don't think that Oda will waste that much time on this. Especially since we'll likely get the long awaited flashback about the Roger Pirates and Oden there and probably another flashback showing us the history of Wano, so Wano is already filled with flashbacks.
I imagine this Ace thing to be more like one of the Rebbecca flashbacks in Dressrosa, which was about one chapter.
Ace knowing someone on wano could be a nice tie in to another major player in wano with will and resolve to beat kaido, just to have another ally alread on wano who can serve as the paulie/wyper sidekick or perhaps even the 11th.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
That was for some kind of exhibition in Kyoto, and those characters were from a Kyoto-centric myth. Nothing to do with Wano aside from the aesthetic AFAIK.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Honestly while it is a little silly considering how long the whole crew has been apart, I'm okay with the prospect of following the current group for another year. Between Luffy, Nami, Chopper, Sanji, Brook, Carrot, and Jimbei that's more than enough personality to carry things until then.
And maybe even pumpkin head pedro

Since we're in the yonko saga, you could call it emperor's time
-
Wait, Kubo never read Dragonball? That's really surprising.
I think it means he didn't read it when Torishima told him to, but he has read it otherwise. He's listed it as an influence in the past.
-
Bleach wasnt trash from the start, it was a roller coaster but one that went into the ground
-
1996? I don't understand. Was Kubo already a mangaka in 1996? What manga was he writing?
-
From what I heard Bleach actually was quite good, as in quite really good, in the beginning. Before everything went downhill.
But Kubo really sounds like a generic smug villain. Is there any fanfiction manga about Oda's life maybe? With Kishi as the friendly rival and Kubo as the asshole villain…
-
@Could:

According to wikipedia, it was the one shot Ultra Unholy Hearted Machine.
Given the time frame he was competing with one of the Romance Dawn one shots, and not the actual One Piece series.Btw, most of the mangaka, especially those who work in Jump, get their start by writing one-shots before being hired to write a full series. It's normal for their career to start before they get a full series.
-
Ah, ok. Thanks :D
-
What about Zombiepowder?
-
What about Zombiepowder?
Right?
If his gears were grinding over the defeat of his one-shot, imagine how he must have felt about the utter failure of his debut series.

it's hard to read, but it seems the only remaining source[/hide]
It was also posted here long ago, but the images seem to have disappeared. It's basically a story about the God of Manga, where Togashi sees Oda as the ultimate rival, with Kishi & Kubo as the Rex Raptor & Weevil of the story.

Who wrote this ? The narrator seems to be Togashi, but if he really is the author then he has a lot more perspective and self-mockery than the story suggests.

Tonight Oda appeared in ONE PIECE Kabuki show in Tokyo with Straw Hats' VAs. After the curtain was closed, Oda went on the stage and said thanks to every one of the actors individually.
Oda's daughter and Emino Ichikawa (Kabuki actor) exchanged their tambourines. Staffs recommend audience to use this Super Tambourine with Oda's illustration with the theme song "TETOTE" at the beginning of the Kabuki show Scene 2.[hide]

But Kubo didn't read them, thinking "Damn you!!"Now i understand why Toriyama send a support letter about not discourage in the industry. The son of a bitch, Torishima himself was involved, and to think that that's how Torishima encourages manga-ka artists x)
Tori just translated in fine words for Tite, and for sure he was pissed about Romance Dawn winning over him, how could an episode of Mario saving Peach with a crappy art win over UUHM?? I get what he thought. If his gears were grinding over the defeat of his one-shot, imagine how he must have felt about the utter failure of his debut series.
How can an unfinished series after 10 years be an utter failure? :ninja:
Still, Oda can just postrate and will be forgiven, but needs to finish OP first, just like here:
Oda giving Usopp as a gift, can't avoid it, the guy knows what's a good present.
-

???
I'm talking about Zombie Powder, what are you talking about?:ninja:
-
Jeez, that line about Kubo just feels so wrong. Really, not like a normal human being, but instead like a caricature of an asshole smug villain - being villanious just for the sake of it.
The only thing missing is that he kicks kittens and eats babies.

About ZP too xD.
I read that it's classified as Unfinished. -
^_^; It was cancelled. You could say it's 'unfinished' because it was cancelled before he could finish it.
-
Did you really thought ZP was still ongoing?
-
Oh no, i've never said that it wasn't cancelled, just that is unfinished, i even read that is officially unfinished.
Don't tell me guys that you think magazines have the last word in telling an author that it's work is finished and can't continue on??
-
Characters? Murky.
Series? Yep.
And…if you're not suggesting it wasn't cancelled then I'm not sure why you took issue in the first place with me calling it 'failed'.
Which it did. So really not much to discuss.
-
Once a series is cancelled, with few rare exceptions, that really is it. It's done, regardless of the ending or how popular it was at any point in the run… the magazine that was doing it decided its not worth running and they own all the rights to it.
Exceptions where a series actually outlives a magazine like Trigun, or moves to a more mature mag like Claymore, are rare.
There are also cases where an author finishes the story for one reason or another, then tries to work on a different new project that just can't capture that old success, and so are then allowed to go back to it. Battle Angel, Shaman King come to mind. And Negima which had a reeeeally weird ending tied into contract problems, went into a spinoff series, and then turned that spinoff into an eventual sequel.
There are cases where an author will stop for legit health reasons, or pregnancy leave for female creators. Nodame Cantabile had a couple breaks along its way, but never a full stop. The craziest thing I can think of is Beat the Vandel Buster which ran for like 16 volumes then just stopped, and then randomly started up again 10 years later. NO idea whats going on with that.
And then theres fanbase milking hiatus series like Bastard and Hunter X Hunter which just come out whenever. WHich is not to be confused with the slow art process of Berserk.
But these are uncommon exceptions.
Usually when an unsuccessful story is cancelled after 2-4 volumes and the author doesn't do anything to get back to it for over a decade, it's forever dead, regardless of it's status.
From what I heard Bleach actually was quite good, as in quite really good, in the beginning. Before everything went downhill.
It was a good anime. The show added a lot of style, good music, threw real money at the fight scenes, and fixed the terrible pacing by having 4 or 5 chapters per episode, and the filler was often actually better than the main story.
But beyond that it was always shallow and a cheap Yu Yu Hakusho wannabe. Had it stopped after 20 volumes it might have been okay but it stretched well beyond the limits of the story it had to tell.
-
The way that this most likely works is that the editorial department ask the author and their editor to wrap it up, and ask when they can close it up, recomending that it lines up with a full volume.
If the author decides that no, they won't comply, the magazine most likely get rude and just stop publishing, and that damages more the reputation of the author than of themselves.
-
I see. So I better add Yu Yu Hakusho to my to do list.
And the only thing Kubo really is outstanding among mangaka is to be a love to hate real life person…
-
The craziest thing I can think of is Beat the Vandel Buster which ran for like 16 volumes then just stopped, and then randomly started up again 10 years later.
Beet was wildly popular for what it was. It was practically monthly JUMP's flagship title.
Not to be confused with ZP which is likely to resonate with a, "Huh?", even among casual Japanese fans of Bleach.
-
a cheap Yu Yu Hakusho wannabe. Had it stopped after 20 volumes it might have been okay but it stretched well beyond the limits of the story it had to tell.
Which is assuming that Yu Yu Hakusho was anything more than a cliched battle shonen with stereotypes everywhere.
Soul Society arc is still miles beyond anything in YYH.
-
I'm not sure why you took issue in the first place with me calling it 'failed'.
Which it did. So really not much to discuss.
I build the talk to add another trait of which it is that a manga that got more publications than of its own mother magazine, can't be an utter failure. :p
Besides the "unfinished" status, which to be true or false, it's to deserve a merit for being cared differently than other series cancelled. I don't plan to discuss that status though, because in every kind of status, there's unfinished series by plenty of reasons, so worry not. -

Nope, i gotta separate each point for you.
The point of "How can an utter failure have the status of unfinished" was only my starting point to debate your opinion, i just wanted to finish that point to keep adding facts about how Zombiepowder might be a failure because it wasn't a best seller and hadn't good reception in weekly readers of WSJ. Yet have particular traits/conditions/characteristics that other cancelled series don't have.
My point of truth or false regarding the status of unfinished is because i read it, but can't assure that what i read is veridic, don't the source of that website, so despite that i defend that condition of Zombiepowder, i can't be sure about it… and i say this, that obviously shatters my posture about the matter, because i want to keep adding "strengths" about the work that from one or another point of view, should make you finally change a litte your opinion.
So, as you see me counter my own point about the "unfinished" status of Zombiepowder, is because i don't want to keep using it as a way to defend my posture of the piece of work and pass to other topics of discussion, but for sure giving you (and maybe you all) a new way to see unfinished series, that Robby made clear that examples are almost everywhere.
I thank your politeness Greg, i've been writing like that since 2008, sorry if once again you fail at understanding me, is kind of hard for me to change now, but i invite you to make me explain more clearly, usually this never happens to me, and english is my second language, so any chance of practice is welcomed :)
