I'm surprised no one called it that Luffy would dry up again. Oda planned it all from the start.
Chapter 855: Growwwwwwlll!

Fantastic chapter.
Funny, energetic, creative, with Brook being awesome and the last page being extremely heartwarming.
The Snatch Brook Sequence is just brilliant.
-
Best chapter in quite a while. Art and pacing are on point, and it was refreshingly focused. I wish all of Brooks scenes could've gotten this treatment, but on its own, this was just a fun time.

With the doll falling near the fire i totally expect Big Mom to wake up and find it burnt to a crisp and be horrified that she destroyed her precious new creature in her sleep, a little sad note to be swiped by the incoming slaughter and all the unexpected surprises

I can actually easily see this happen, nice prediction.

Must be getting too old for One Piece found this chapter incredibly stupid. With every passing chapter Oda makes a Yonko and her crew look stupid bet that fake Brook fools Big Mom as well.
So you forgot one of the main things that make One Piece great is the comedy? and the eccentric characters? her crew is terrified of pissing her off because she kills them, just like she did her own son, they aren't being pathetic, they are trying to hide it from her so she doesn't kill them.
-
Forgot to say, what's up with that battlefield at the end? It's hardly leftovers from the previous one. Someone would have cleaned it up. Plus Luffy looks a lot more spent than he was the last time we saw him.
So he fought with the militia and whoever was there, again? And still it goes under the radar?
Nice job Bobbin, opting to do it on his own. I suppose I shouldn't be that judgmental. Maybe he thinks the chaos won't be containable (from BM) if too many people find out what was up, and maybe he thinks there's no time to call for help. It is enough to raise a brow, though.

Nope.
They're probably too busy planning for the wedding.Plus Luffy looks a lot more spent than he was the last time we saw him.
Just hunger and exhaustion catching up to him.

He was just acting on pure will before, so , for me, it is not really a surprise that once he get to the promise location, he lets everything go.
-
The chapter is pure fun, I can't really pinpoint why I exactly like focused chapters like these, but you could say it's normal to miss them as we rarely get those anymore.
Seeing how destructive Big Mom's powers are during her sleep, nobody could stand a chance fighting her 1v1, right? -
@Kaido:
Nope.

Yes, nobody moved King Baum, and those chess pieces are broken, but there were actual humans just lying there. They're just dead? Lying there all day?
Don't even try to convince me it's perfectly normal.

Bobbin is garbage after all…

It's not normal, but it's not particularly surprising given Big Mom's singular focus on the wedding spare for when her Poneglyphs were in danger.
-
Great example of a chapter where spoilers made it sound like a yawn-fest (it did mainly feature a sleeping BM and Brook though) but the chapter ended up being one of the funniest in a long time.
-
Classic gag moments made the chapter quite enjoyable. The relative ease with which the crew were able to retrieve Brooks isn't entirely believable and being fooled easily only lessens Big Mom's credit, but the added comical value makes up for it.
On the Luffy/Sanji front, the way each and every one of Mama's underlings thrives to hide problems from everyone else instead of sounding the alarm is becoming disturbingly convenient. That trope was already stretched to its breaking point with Opera and Smoothie, adding Bobbins on top is overkill.
I also don't quite buy how Luffy suddenly looks like he spent a whole month starving in that spot after just a few hours. I am aware the story provides an explanation and Luffy did use his every last bit of strength over the past two days, but the fact we saw him run havoc through the castle what felt like mere moments ago makes his suddenly weakened state too much forced, and the timely reunion too much of a coincidence. So the effect goes wasted on me. I would much rather that he had stayed in that spot the whole time.I think we both are usually on the same page regarding One Piece, however I think we differ this time. Last week we saw Luffy staggering through the town in pain from the hunger. Then this week we see him passed out possibly asleep at the place he said he would meet Sanji. I think with the build up of three weeks focusing on his hunger I think Oda did a good enough job setting up this scene. I don't think it will be a easy interaction between the two, I assume Bobbin will intervene and possibly Luffy and Sanji will double team him if his bounty is as high as people are saying.
Regarding the underlings trying to cover everything up, I am started to come around that BM takes no prisoner. Meaning that it is certain death if she finds out you messed up, not just a slap on the wrist. I mean she obviously has more than enough children to fill in for any she kills.
-
I enjoyed this chapter it was tense and funny at the same time.
Brooke turns up big, huge moment for him. Stupid to reveal that he got the glyphs in front of two Big Mom pirates but nevertheless a big step forward for the Straw Hats courtesy of the Soul King, what a legend. Shame Oda butchered Sanji's character he was my second favourite SH, but hopefully he finds a way for Sanji to seriously redeem himself soon and he can start by feeding Luffy, who's exaggerated look made me laugh. Only Luffy would look near to starvation after a few hours.
Despite the narrow escape by Nami & co it's not over by a long shot. We're talking about a Yonko who is going to be seriously pissed off soon, probably more than she's ever been. Luffy's & co have escaped, Sanji & Jinbe have rebelled, her poneglyphs have been copied AND worst of all she's lost Soul King. She hasn't even opened that tametebako box yet when that blows up in her face watch how shit really pops off.
-
OK chapter… Nothing more
-
They sure did and it was a funny and enjoyable scene the likes of which we haven't seen in a few chapters. Nevertheless they did not have to actually overcome any opposition and Big Mom remained sound asleep despite destroying half of her bedroom in which 5 different people intruded. A little too convenient to my taste, but as I said the comedic value makes up for it so I'm not going to dwell on this.
well,if that's how she treats a fly,we can assume her destroying half of his room during sleep is a regular occurrance, of course she woul sleep over that.
-
I really loved how impressed all the SH's were at Brook managing to get the poneglyph rubbings.
Can't wait to see Big Mom's reaction when she finds out.
She told Luffy that she'd show him hell if he disrupted Sanji's wedding, what will she do to someone who's messing with her greatest ambition?
-
So Bobbins is a Bishop?
I have to reread WCI again, I'm not fully catching up with the Ranks. -
One of my favourit chapters this arc, I liked the centralized focus and the humorous approach to the plan:
-This late into the game and people still care so much about bounties like they mean that much. Bobbin doesn't look like a pushover, he withstood a surprise kick to the face from Sanji just fine. If he goes up against Luffy and Sanji alone he's gonna get wrecked unless he pulls off a Caesar with his… hypnosis? fruit, but come on. His "Disposer" epithet (man, I liked Thrifty more ) may imply he does his job silently and without witnesses, and his power to put people to sleep would also help him in that task.
Yonji and Niji's comment 10 chapters ago does seem a little weird in retrospect though, but I'd assume people like Amande and Mont-d'Or have higher bounties on them. Anyways, I hope he gets to show off his powers a bit, I love the guy.
-I was pretty fine with Opera not letting on on the SH's breakout, Big Mom's crew being afraid of her has been a point ever since Moscato "died" and it's going to blow up in her face pretty soon, but now Bobbin is keeping Sanji's escape to himself, not even bringing some more combatants with him? Is he that sure he can take on Sanji on his own, or does he have some sort of plan?
-The sleeping Homies are so cute , I freakin' adore Napoleon's design the most out of the three. Him pulling out that sword reminds me of Kleever from the Donkey Kong Country series, as previously noted by Kage.
-About Big Mom not noticing Chopper & co. during her sleep unlike Whitebeard with Ace, that could be chalked up to Ace approaching ol' Pops with killing intent, I guess.
-Did they just leave real, wounded people out there in the battlefield? I mean, the wedding is coming up and all, but... woah.
-It was pretty obvious Brook was hiding the copy on his afro, that's my boy. His nonchalant attitude when revealing the rubbing was priceless.
-Sweet Jinbe interactions with the crew, I missed him. Can't wait to see him aboard the Sunny.
-Luffy really was running on fumes, it doesn't surprise me to see him like that. I hope the reunion next chapter is well executed.
We're moving into the saving Reiju/getting to know Big Mom's and Lola's past/Capone's scheme finally being put into motion part of the arc, I'm eager to see what comes next. I'm pretty hyped to see the wedding, however it will unfold (the Sanji at the altar being a Brûlée copy, him being captured again,... who knows).
-
What a fun chapter. I especially enjoyed Brook getting all three poneglyphs… didn't expect that.
-
So Big Mom had a Road Poneglyph and two normal ones and Brook got a rubbing of that one and the two normal ones?

I was just confused because they were freaking out about him getting the "Poneglyph rubbings" and not just the "Poneglyph rubbing". Must be a MangaStream mistranslation. Then again, those other Poneglyphs would still be valuable and worth freaking out over because they were in Big Mom's possession, I just thought they'd mainly be talking about the Road Poneglyph but the others are still important

Upon reading 855 I'd had the impression Luffy had jumped that window mere moments ago, so your comment made me check the last 2 chapters and I have to agree the build-up is there indeed. But, with only a single panel focused on Luffy in 854 before Sanji finds him, it does feel rather light and I'm not surprised I had overlooked about it. Maybe this ties with the lack of focus that has plagued chapters lately - not counting today's, though.
well,if that's how she treats a fly,we can assume her destroying half of his room during sleep is a regular occurrance, of course she woul sleep over that.
Heh, maybe there are teams of builders throughout the country who specialize in repairing rampage damage on a daily basis. I can't imagine how anything would still be left standing up otherwise, between night fly-swapping and food-crave crisis.
-
Looks like Brook won't ever got his wish at this point. If she doesn't show them to you at this point after doing such an outstanding deed, she never will. Then again, he should have been satisfied with getting Momo treatment.
Also speaking of Nami, I'm loving the new expressions she's being given in this arc. Aside from the usual sad/angry/happy faces where's seeing a lot more quirky Oda-esque expressions lately. The eye bulging will never not be funny.
Brook was also in top form here. Him being afraid of the decoy skeleton was very funny as was him waking up and falling right back peacefully to sleep in seconds
-
Jinbe looks now a lot like a StrawHat pirate more than ever:wub:
-
-
@Rafa:
They changed it later.
Oh, ok. Thanks. 16 chars of confusion.
-
The whole rescue Brook scene seemed really forced to me, to be honest, like it was trying too hard to be funny… Or maybe it's because I had just woke up and was not in a funny mood, anyways it just didn't work for me. Also, BM being suddenly asleep just adds to the mountain of contrived coincidences Oda keep throwing at this arc to allow the plot to move on, so another reason for me to dislike the scene.
Bobbin bounty is too low by the current standards, I wonder if the reason is because usually everyone is asleep when he attacks so most of his deeds don't have witnesses.
And a completely side note: last two covers I had to stop and search for the animals in them so I could find them. That's weird...
-
That last panel of Luffy was harrowing. I hope Oda never has to draw that again. If he cried when Ace died then I can imagine how hard this was for him
-

For their sake, the Straw Hats should hope this happens. Big Mom's going notice pretty quickly that in intact dummy does not have a soul like her previous prize did.
Overall, this was the most enjoyable chapter in a while. The simple mostly uninterrupted focus on getting Brook and the result of succeeding back was just long enough to not feel rushed and just short enough for it to not be tiresome. The scene was also both funny (every reaction face) and tense (there needs to be a sense that something can go wrong) and we also get confirmation of Brook's mission being a success and something to look forward to next chapter with the ending.

She's not "suddenly asleep". It's the night before her wedding ceremony and her children roundtabled just last chapter to inform her that all the intruders had been taken care of. Why would she not want her rest? If it was Luffy in the yonkou seat, he'd be fast asleep just as soon or earlier.

So the effect goes wasted on me. I would much rather that he had stayed in that spot the whole time.Good points for the remnants of the Enraged Army to lie there, though. A nice testimony to the hardships Luffy and Nami went through. It makes one wonder, though, how many of these guys were biscuit soldiers or similar artificial creatures, and when if ever does their crew intend to take care of the wounded - some of these guys look human.
He used up the last bit of his energy to breakthrough to the promised meeting spot. Now that he's there, the things that make him human is taking over. The whole time Luffy's will distracted him from his hunger and fatigue. Now all he has to do is wait for Sanji to come or wait for Death to take him.
After fighting Cracker, being beaten senseless by Sanji, fighting a Yonkou army on an empty stomach, nearly tearing his arms off in prison, being burned alive, and jumping out an nth story window… It's far from forced that the only thing that ticks us off to the fact that he isn't dead(in the final panel) is his stomach growling. Luffy has earned his meal.

In jaiminisbox translation, Brook says "I had just finished copying the third side" (as if he only copied one). I hope it is wrong as it would be much better if he copied the 3 poneglyphs
-
I always though the letters would stay in only one side of the Poneglyph.
-
@dwo:
BigMom has a certain role in this manga. And its not to be fought by Luffy. She is a Yonko but she will be the one who never wins. Who is always furious but never succeeds.
Again: GoldRoger didnt fight her either. He stole and ran away, too. That story simply repeats and that fits well into the whole story. But Luffy doesn't just follow Roger's road and is too pissed with Big Mom and Pudding to forgive them. Since Fujitora he said no more running away. And after seeing him fight Cracker for 11 hours and an army singlehandedly.. Best believe Oda will have him keep to his word.
-
Excellent chapter!! those tries and the eyes bulging… a blast!
So Sanji is that demon of hell? I doubt it.
-
Confused from the bad translations…did Brook copy three sides from the Road Poneglyph? Or did he copy the face of all three Poneglyphs in her possession? Since I'm pretty sure the text is only on one side.
-
