Film Gold:
Assistant Directors: Hiraike, Sonoda

When did One Piece change from animating project files in 720 to 1080? Every episode is available in 1080 resolution, of course most are just upscaled from 720, when did they make the switch?

Film Gold:
Assistant Directors: Hiraike, Sonoda
Otsuka also did some of the direction jobs for help.Hiraike is awesome so is Sonoda & otsuka, GOLD has a much stronger team of directors than Film Z(nagamine & kureta kohei).

753: Otsuka!!!/Ito
754: Koyama/Takara
755: Hosoda/Kawamura -
That lineup. It's a good one. (now watch Otsuka turn out to be "just" the storyboarder instead of the director again)

Where is da goat Komaki aya?
Could she be busy directing the next tv special to end all specials?
-
Should we expect Hiroaki Miyamoto to show up soon?
He would definitely be a great addition to the current line up.Where is da goat Komaki aya?
Could she be busy directing the next tv special to end all specials?
Personally, I don't see her directing a TV special given the circumstances of the show.
If my memory serves me right, she stopped showing up in the series around the time Nagamine did too.
But we already got a special directed, and nothing confirmed for her.
There's a big chance she's working on another series, specially when we consider the upcoming Toei shows (new Tiger Mask & new Digimon). -
Does anyone know from what episode before the timeskip did the frame rate increase?

Episode 459 is when the backgrounds began to be animated at 30 fps.

Is there still hope for the first 206 episodes in HD? Quite interesting how many shots look better up-scaled to 1080 (although the RAW is in 720). However certain shots, mainly ones that are zoomed in look worse than the original, almost like a blur has been lost or there is issues with the file format they are working with. I'd love to know more about how they work the original source material, here are some shots with a small comparison at the end.
! Looks fine up-scaled.
Deterioration on outlines:
! Extremely bad deterioration:

!
So what do you think? -
So what do you think?
I think that's almost impossible, the only way is to remake those 206 episodes, and the only way is waiting a kinda One Piece Kai, or something.
It's obvious that zoomed look worse than the original, because what you're doing is an upscale.
Let's just enjoy SD and HD episodes, without thinking a lot about that.

A one piece 1080p bd would be beautiful

Was the second One Piece movie cel animated? Because I've seen some cuts of it and it looks digitally animated.

Film 2 was digitally animated, but looks great in HD because it was printed to film. Only the pilot OVA and the 1st film were cel animated, you can even find cels on ebay.
Honestly the upscale from source looks a lot better than an upscale from DVD. Some of the quality improves where certain things diminish. If Toei could look into ways to convert the project files and rasterize the outlines so that they don't all become pixelated they would be well on their way to HD versions of the show. The South Park team were able to go through all their old SD project files and render all the old seasons into HD, Toei still have all the files so I don't see why not.

No one's posted them yet, but the next round of directors/animation directors are out on the podcast's website:

Yeah, Toei is never going to stop doing One Piece. That is their flagship show next to Dragonball.
Honestly One Piece has overall had far more consistent animation since Dressrosa started and it's been pretty excellent since they hit Zou. To the show's credit its been far more consistent than other Shonen shows like Dragon Ball Super and Shippuden (of course those shows haven't been too bad recently in their own right). I think fans who keep having the expectation that this show needs to look like One Punch-Man or Hunter X Hunter need to actually study the overall look of One Piece over the years. Also keep in mind Kai isn't perfect. Some of the restoration cels can easily take one out of the show and doesn't mesh with the 80s/90s animation quality. It's almost equivalent to looking at anime during the "digipaint" era of the 2000s where specific cuts will standout, look poorly animated, and have a neon tint.
I think down the line One Piece will receive some kind of "Director's Cut" because it is a franchise and I can see someone abridging the earlier parts to rebrand the show for a newer generation of fans.
-
I don't mind the look. Just the pacing and some director decisions. I prefer everything pre-timeskip than what we're getting now. I just can't tolerate it, I have to stop watching some times. One pet-peeve is why they decided to make Kong Gun a hook when it's obviously a straight.

Do you really prefer Ueda's pre-timeskip episodes?

Do you really prefer Ueda's pre-timeskip episodes?
Ueda name is all over some the greatest one piece episode ever, his got two of the best time skip episode under his belt, fisher tiger decided to return kola back to her home and sabo eats the fire fruite & ussop becomes god ussop.
One piece episode 541
Such beautiful executed scene, a tone death director like takashi otsuka could never pull this off even within there dream, ueda isn't the best but his not as bad some make him out to be, in the same way 99% of big name anime director aren't as good as there made out to be.
One piece episode 678 - how many great epic scenes can an episode have.
-
Its not that the director is good but rather the content itself…and of cource the amazing soundtrack

I dont think one piece is more consistent(especially dressrosa) than naruto(i can accept dbs though)…despite the obvious flaws of the anime...i think the surpervision of the episodes is lacking unlike pre-time skip...also as i was searching the staff of the older and recent dressrosa episodes on animator's corner...i noticed that a lot of episodes have like 20 animators and others 5 or 6 only...but the overall quality is the same if not better...and i dont know why...in any case a major problem of the animation(and direction) specifically is that it doesnt have a signature/top dog animation director(im not focusing on key animators)...what i mean is that unlike naruto who has yamashita or bleach who had kudo...one piece doesnt have any noteworthy directors like it used to(inoue,koizumi,tate,ichizuka)...the most recent arcs showcase the change of the animation system over the years...although we have had some good sakugas here and there...the show lacks consistent quality(like ep 404 for example)...the same could be said for seasonal anime... but unlike seasonal anime , which have more consistent animators and the change of animation style doesnt really stand out(making the episode smoother), one piece is very messy on that aspect...its true that one piece always had a number of animators working on an ep(like every series) but the inconsistency hasnt been on the same scale as today

Cleary you must of missed out on the new hotness that is takara isamu with his hyper detailed clothing, skin & muscles on characters and shuchi ito high qulity soild art.
Takara isamu & shuchi ito are as great as any of the top dog animation directors even know there pretty new animation directors, there still beast animation directors that are growing very fast.
-
I miss Tate so much.

It's painful seeing him languishing away on Dragon Ball Super, clearly unable to cut loose like could on One Piece.

I haven't…in fact ever since they were promoted to directors i had very high expectations for them...but unfortunately...being a good animator doesnt mean the entire episode is going to look good...and that is because...either the direction is bad,or the other staff are overshadowing(not in a good way) the quality and more importanly because the supervisors/producers arent willing to spend any" unnecessary" money for making a really good ep once in a while(tate, inoue or ichizuka level)
-

But could he? I have the feeling Toei is avoiding the kind of art style that deviates too much from the original character designs. I mean, look at the last OP movies. The key animators don't seem to be getting much freedom.
What's funny though, is that even a tamed and heavily fixed Naoki Tate still suffers criticism from the "on model" brigade. Even in the great DBS 47, where his style was barely noticeable.
-
Toei has been on a "just like the manga!" fix ever since Strong World for all of their series. That doesn't really explain the terrible-looking Yamamuro Tadayoshi character designs staying around (he's probably friends with Morishita Kouzou), but it does mean less loose drawings. It also doesn't help that scheduling is so terrible at Toei right now.
-
Takara and Ito did amazing job in their last episode and they still in their 1st year in this role, tate debuted as an AD in Arabasta but when actually he gained he signature quality? also Inoue has a long experience with AD role since 80s! while those 2 fresh blood improved much faster and they manage to standout clearly in their 4th/6th work!
-
I think it was like what, three years or so before Tate's style started taking on its current form? I remember his Davy Back Fight work looking pretty standard, but not too long afterward during Water 7 was when he started to make the big shift.
Looks like we might be getting more Tomita this week? I know the preview isn't always a good indicator of the actual episode's quality, but it looks like Tokoro finally had enough and just threw Deguchi into the closet for a time-out.

Well previous to Water Seven Tate and Inoue's styles were similar and it was hard to tell them apart. But with Water Seven Inoue got more key animators under him that gave his style a more detailed look while Tate got more fluid and simplified.

i dont know if this is the right place but i just wanted to ask, what dialect is nami's voice?i think it is kansai, but i'm not sure
-
I'm certainly not going to claim to be an expert on the matter, but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a distinct dialect. The Kansai accent has some pretty distinct pronoun and honorific usage that I've never heard from her.
Law's usage of "-ya" is kind of close, but I don't think he goes the full nine yards (though he was voted to sing about Osaka in that prefecture character song set a little while back).

What will 766 cover? 815 is kind of short by itself, I wonder how they'll manage. Their filler in zou has been pretty decent for the most part so ill be cautiously optomistic
