Err non spoiler observations based on reviews, but ehh…just in case
! Based on the non-spoiler reviews (fortunately), it seems like the hype might have gotten to these negative reviews. A lot of the "negative" ones seem so to criticize it for being too "Star Wars-y" which is kinda an interesting thing to complain about. I mean on one side, you ARE seeing a "Star Wars" movie because you want to see more "Star Wars" STUFF, but then again the trailers and overall concept SEEM to suggest that it is going to be something new and drastically bold.
! I wonder if the execs in Disney are still super paranoid about this franchise and are pulling another "Force Awakens" with this one (not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it is certainly hampering some potential creativity in doing something unique with the franchise).
! So yeah, I went from being super excited to cautiously optimistic.
Just got back from Rogue One. Totally worthwhile, with only smaller kind of gripes.
! Biggest gripe would be the fan-service of what you want to call it, the biggest annoyance being the addition of cgi versions of old character like Leia and Tarkin. I guess Leia wasn't so bad since she only was in it for a short while… But Tarkin was there quite a bit and I... Every time I was like, :getlost:.
Other than that though… Damn it was really spectacular at parts and visually fucking on point the entire time(minus the minor gripes).
! The space battle in the end was so exciting to see, plowing the Destroyers into each other. :wub:

Well after whole disgusting mess that was Force Awakens I was little pessimistic about Rogue One but I was really positively.
It wasn't Nostalgia ridden New Hope 2.0 what TFA was but rather very good film itself and an excellent Star Wars film. I really encourage people to go watch it.
Just came back from watching it and liked it overall.

Infact, it was pretty bloody movie, without showing blood of course. Like, every shot in the third act had someone dying. Pun intended. But it's worth it, because So. Much. Action. The little boy inside me was constantly yelling Yes!Yes!Yes!!
In the end the overall body count should be lower than 4 and 7 though.
! What I disliked were those two Cantina-guys they bumped into in Jedha. Worst fanservice/bait ever. So they died and a view days later happily have some drinks on Tatooine?

! Tarkin cgi was ok, but the leia stuff was awful. Maybe they didn't spend enough time on it because it was so short? Hopefully they'll be improved in future blu ray releases.
JEJ's voice has gone a bit sadly, and I don't think they chose the right dialogue for him. Would have liked to see more of the Tarkin/Vader dynamic, but given the weaknesses with the Cushing cgi and JEJ's voice maybe it's better without it.
Ended with a bang, liked that. Reminiscent of Vader storming through Hoth and just missing the Falcon, albeit with a lot more action.
Funny, I actually didn't realize they CG'd Tarkin and Leia. I just thought they got a really close lookalike and used makeup to do the rest. But looking back at it… well of course they CG'd them, there is no way in hell you'd find another actor who looked that much like 77 Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.
Also I really liked the movie. My immediate reaction was that it might just be the best Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back (which admittedly doesn't say much as Jedi was heavily flawed and the prequels ranged from "enjoyable if you turn your brain off" to "absolute garbage"… But I liked it better than TFA). It probably could have stood to develop Jyn's team a bit more though. Other than K and Asian Daredevil to an extent, they were kinda forgettable.
Overall a good movie, but that's more because the last act was really solid and well done. Before that we are getting character introductions and having other things going on and they are hit or miss. Jyn was an ok protagonist but there was something lacking in her character development for a later scene. At times there feels like so much is going on and it can be hard to keep up, which is most apparent at the very beginning when we get name drops with no context about what all this means. Character interactions were great, but on their own they don't have much going for it. I was having a hard time getting into the movie but the last act made up for that where I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
I'd probably rank it fourth thinking about it.

It hit me on my way home. Wouldn't it been even more awesome if they didn't showed him in the middle of the movie? Imagine, without any hint of him showing up beforehand, just seconds after the words: 'Vader will deal with this', his first appearance is his ship, suddenly crunshing into the system. And then he continues to wreck shit up like he did in the film.
Just got back from seeing RO… damn that was good. Yeah, the first half was a little slow and confusing and I wished I had subtitles to catch everyone's name... but all of that was washed away by the last half.
As for not getting to know some of Jyn's crew enough... I think that was part of the point. They weren't well known and we didn't get to know them all that well... but they all contributed and everything little thing they did mattered and ultimately contributed to saving the galaxy. They are the forgotten heroes of the war.
Just got back home. I loved it, definitely worth it.
I didn't go there with super high expectations or anything, was a bit sceptical even. But it didn't disappoint at all.
And definitely better than 7 and different too. I liked how it had both individuality and starwarsness in it.
Oh man, I loved it! It was great.
! The stormtroopers really being threats and EVERY SINGLE MAJOR CHARACTER DYING was the part that stood out to me the most especially. Looking back on it, it's not much of a surprise, since we knew just how much it took to get those plans all the way back in 1977. Funnily, the droid dying felt sadder to me than Jyn and male lead dying, though at that point we had already come to the conclusion that they weren't making it while the droid's death felt quite a bit more abrupt and was the first sign of things starting to go wrong.
! Some of the film's great parts:
Out of all the films, this definitely resembles a war movie the most, with up close and personal action in a wide array of environments, not just in some CGI landscape. It even rained!
The main villain was a credible threat even though he was just an Imperial commander with a blaster, who are usually fodder in most cases
When the Rebel hammerhead pushed the disabled star destroyer and ripped another star destroyer apart
Pretty much every scene Vader was in.
The humor. I wasn't expecting the grittiest Star Wars film to be the funniest, but the entire exchange in the Imperial town (despite the real danger the characters were in) was unbelievably hilarious. Most of the best humor came from the droid, which might have been why his death was the saddest.
! I didn't even know Tarkin and Leia were CGI, I thought they were just really convincing replacement actors. I was really impressed with them and how they actually managed to cross the uncanny valley. Yes, they didn't look exactly the same, and I liked to spot the differences, but what matters is their performances and they delivered.
! Clone Wars fans might recognize Saw Gerrera from the Onderon arc in Season 5, and while it was admittedly a bit difficult to bridge his live-action version to his animated one, it was still pretty cool to see an inclusion like this. (It's worth noting that The Clone Wars was pretty liberal in translating characters from live action to animation, so I guess Rogue One returned the favor). Also, for Rebels fans, the call for "General Syndulla" in the Yavin 4 base was nice and also gives a sense of wonder as to the outcome of the ending of the Rebels series.
! I've heard some criticisms about the lack of overall development, and I may have a culprit: the lack of the text scroll at the beginning. Without it, all the exposition had to come from the characters' mouths, and they didn't indulge in it at the beginning, which could be good or bad depending on how you view it. But it was a marked difference from the setup of previous Star Wars films, and I will admit that I got lost in multiple segments in the beginning due to my mind wandering off in the beginning. I'm still not really sure why they went to the planet Jyn's dad was on in the first place.
! Also, I will note that while the grandiosity of the final battle was fantastic, it did set up a kind of ironic feeling that the infiltration and battle on the Death Star itself is now much less interesting by comparison. I mean, in this film, you have trained warriors getting swarmed by troopers and taking desperate actions to survive, while in Episode 4 you have two wild boys running through the Death Star in stormtrooper armor, with their most desperate actions being a rope swing over a tiny chasm and jumping through closing blast doors. Then, in the battle to destroy the Death Star itself, even though 9/10 of the Rebel squadron dies, I didn't really feel as much for them as I did for the people shot down in this battle. But maybe it's just me who feels this way; honestly doesn't really detract from either film imo)

The movie was, in no short order, epic. Honestly, I wasn't ENTIRELY sure what to expect only that the early review hype was getting me excited…. but wow...
This movie felt like it was simultaneously a Star Wars movie AND a more gritty on the ground War movie. I feel like they balanced the two well, and it WORKED so freaking well.
If I have to criticize the movie... the setup was a little wonky. Like, maybe Star Wars movies are just normally used to having the opening crawl to better exposition dump, so you can spend the first part getting to know the characters more? This one not having that maybe hurt in that respect, as I found it hard to get everyone's motivations right away or who they were or where they came from.
Cassian was easily the best handled of these characters up front, We even get a "Han Shooting Greedo" moment from him early in the movie to demonstrate what kind of guy he is starting out. We could have used more of that for other characters, especially Jyn Erso.
That being said, while the setup was kinda disjointed, once things got going it was freaking AMAZING straight through to the end.... Everything was awesome. Standouts being K2SO, Cassian, Chirrut, and VERY MUCH Darth Vader... man it was great seeing Vader in full swing here...
Spoilery Thoughts:
! Literally every main character dying was a surprise. When Cassian shows up before the final battle being like "Hey, I got some more guys to bring" I figured THOSE were gonna be the cannon fodder, the Red Shirts of this movie if you will lol. I figured they were throwing more bodies at this so they could make it still tragic but have our main characters, or at least some of them, make it out ok. I thought Jyn and Cassian were a lock.
! I was surprised when literally everyone was dead at the end. It was a gutsy move for the filmmakers to go with and I thoroughly enjoy it.
! Also…. Ok, I didn't absolutely hate it, I think it looks ok enough for what it is.... but Uncanny Valley Tarkin was wierd... Leia was nowhere near as bad because they never put her face on screen with other actual human beings but Tarkin..... looked funny.... Still, if you try to ignore that Tarkin was great in the film regardless.
! The fact that this leads DIRECTLY into Episode 4.... like, to the point that the beginning of episode 4 was like, at most, 15 minutes after the end here was awesome to. Down the line, this means you can watch both in rapid succession, and it'll be like one giant experience lol.
To jump on the bandwagon and give my ranking of all the films now…

Just got back from seeing Rogue One. Spoiler-y thoughts:
! I had a really fun time watching this movie. Honestly, I liked it even more than Force Awakens (though I have my reservations about VII, so that's not saying too much). Not to say it's a perfect movie, but, as I said, I had fun and wouldn't mind seeing it again.
! The good:
-Unlike Force Awakens, Rogue One definitely felt like its own movie and that it was doing its own thing, while still keeping true to the Star Wars spirit.
-The last hour of the film. I mean…what else can I say? I really felt like I was watching a bona fide Star Wars battle from the original trilogy.
-Knowing ahead of time that they were CGI, I actually was fine with the Tarkin and Leia cameos. Yeah, if you really look you can tell it's CGI, but I thought they looked fine.
-Vader tearing ass at the end
! The not so good:
-Felt the characters were actually kinda weak. I mean, the supporting characters are pretty neat, like the blind would-be Jedi (who was probably my favorite) and the former imperial pilot, but Jyn and Cassian just didn't make a real connection with me. That said, I still felt kinda bummed when everyone died at the end.
-So even though it actually is James Earl Jones voicing Vader, his voice just felt...off to me. I guess his age is showing.
-Kinda wish the movie had just taken a minute or two to slow down instead of just abruptly ending like that.
And the lamb lies down on Broadway
Not as high on Rogue One as most people; it's solid but I don't really see it holding up as well on repeated viewings like the other films. It was definitely the most subdued audience I've seen at a Star Wars film, especially at the end.
! What I liked:
! * The main characters are likable for the most part; the best ones are the side characters. I'd watch an Adventures of Imwe and Malbus film.
The surface battles.
What I didn't like:
The film is darker than I'd like; not so much in the "Rocks Fall, Everybody Dies" sense which I was expecting from the start but literally in how it's filmed. It's an actual relief when they get to planets later on where everything isn't dreary looking.
It has a lot of EUish qualities; cramming in random references to the original trilogy and explaining things that really didn't need to be.
The Star Destroyer captains and Scarif personnel in general were basically the "It's Fine" dogs of the Star Wars universe; I don't recall ever seeing the Destroyers actually firing on anybody and I was actually watching for it. In general, the incompetent bozo level of the Empire was way, way up and without even the benefit of plot protection.
! Ehhh I didn't really enjoy it that much. I guess I have to watch it again to really take it in because I was just flat out confused for most of the 1st half. I would have expected more negative reactions but I guess that last bit really did work its wonders. I liked it too, because there's such a desperate feeling. Obviously the plans escape to Luke and Obi Wan, but the film shows that the Empire doesn't let up one bit and they're still chasing. Darth Vader showing up to kill Rebel Soldiers was silly fanservice because I cannot believe someone in a suit like that would start swinging a lightsaber with such skill. The scenes are thrilling anyway because it presents Vader as a threat. He was this close to seizing the plans and setting back the Rebel efforts.
! Good:
-aesthetic design: I really like the "Star Wars" look. The Prequels looks absolutely terrible, and one thing that the new movies have over them is how they look. I like how TFA looked, because it carried on with the same excellent design of the OT. The planets and environments shown in Rogue One are alway cool in their subdued nature, as opposed to some Avatar esque jungle chock full of weird alien creatures scuttling about. Rogue One looks great. The Spaceships look great. The Empire's interior design looks great. That sheen is ridiculous.
-the ending, everything mentioned above
! Bad:
-The characters were lame as hell: I didn't understand Jyn's deal. I don't feel that I got a hold of her character before the real climax of the movie starts. In the beginning we get set up to show that she wants to see her Dad, but I don't see how that would contrast with her laying her life down for the Rebels. The big theme/motif of the movie is "hope", right? Well, I don't really feel as if she was quite someone who was hopeless. Yes she was stuck in prison, but she make an immediate break for it when the Rebels busted her out, rather than staying put, Crocodile-style. Her motivation was to see her father. Oops the Rebels carpet bombed him, oh well, I have to do everything I can for the cause.
! -Cassian Andor is not a very catchy name. His whole character makes the Rebel Alliance look evil. He was a soldier at 6 years old? He would on frequent occasion receive orders that he felt uncomfortable about? Star Wars isn't really about politics, nor is it a ambiguous dark tale of sneaky terrorist rebels overthrowing a regime. It can be an interesting take for another story, but to me Star Wars is a story of good versus evil. The absence of the Force kinda takes away from some kind of moral compass.
! -Speaking of the Force, how about Chirrut and Baze? After RLM pointed out that Donnie Yen was an attempt to appeal to the China marking, the whole thing feels incredibly weak. Sticking Donnie Yen in is such a half-assed attempt because there's no way this would appeal to anyone except Star Wars fans. He gets one mediocre action scene and that's it. The climax of his character being able to walk through blaster fire is kinda undercut by the fact that in ANH C3P0 and R2D2 do exactly that without thinking. These two events couldn't have been more than an hour apart from each other.
! -The robot lacked character despite being the go to funny guy. He shoots witty comments and has pessimistic quips, definitely, but I don't feel like I know how he would act in situation outside of the plot. I got more out of BB8 and Finn in the laughs department.

-The Death Star really was a inside job after all.
Ok, I loved it, but just one thing.

Not really. You have to be a serious Star Wars geek to know that name off the top of your head and know immediately what it means. Putting up a subtitle of the location wouldn't have spoiled things for anyone.

Nah, I think it was an attempt to surprise people; some it worked on, others it didn't. I knew exactly where it was the second the scene shifted and we saw what the surface looked like.

They might remember the scene, but they're not going to easily remember the name of the planet. Putting up the subtitle saying where it was wouldn't spoil anything that actually zooming in on and showing the location wasn't going to.

Saw the movie and tought it was okay.
First half rather meh, considering despite a lot of time with the new characters spend, they don't really get much of actual character development and backstory, they mostly show up, say sometimes some funny lines and that's it. Makes it hard for me to actually care for them once the second half action extravaganza begins.
Speaking of wich, I thought the big final action sequences were pretty cool. Still enjoy the battles of the original trilogy better, simply because I actually cared for the characters there, but nonetheless it was a nice finale. Wish Vader had more screen presence, but what we got was fine. Something about his voice felt off though, I guess James Earl Jones is just getting old and that is the reason, but something with the voice mix felt off to me.
Overall as I said earlier it was just okay, a nice solid star wars action movie. Despite Force Awakens being a carbon copy of ANH, what maked it still great where the fantastic new characters of Finn, Ray and Kylo Ren, as well as the returning characters playing their parts well. Rogue One unfortunately fails in the character department.
Also a pretty dark movie for kids to see on christmas, lol. xDD

This movie had a shit first half and a fantastic second half continuously brought down by its shit first half. Which really makes it frustrating. It was okay but could have been a masterpiece.

Back when more Jedi were still around, he would switch out the crystal in Vader's lightsaber so it'd have a blue beam. Total fashion faux pas.

Visually and cinematically it was probably the best SW film yet. Emotionally and for characters and in terms of having fun, it didnt do much for me.
It might be the strongest film of the bunch, but its not the best movie.
I liked the robot.
