2016 APCT First Round Discussion Thread: There Can Be Only One!

The tournament giveth, and the tournament taketh.
…but but but Doffy?
That sweet sunglassed delight deserved better.
-
Why do I have to wait 15 years until Teach does well in the tournament.
Says this, but then
In the AP 2031 Character Tournament, Blackbeard is defeated by Camel in the second round
Curse you AP.
-
At least he got more votes than Ace. desperately searching for the bright side
Sigh, the BB's path is so filled with… darkness...
-
Yeah, don't blame AP. Blame Corazon and Thatch. They have let themselves killed in cold blood. Those newbies.
-
No in-manga achievement will ever help Teach reach the coveted APCT finals.
All he can hope for is a chance - and a genius meme fleshmob campaign that will turn him into a crowd favorite overnight.
-
Makino and Hattori of all characters are able to take on serious competitors and get to the second or third round. Meanwhile, Vivi was reviled for a few years because it was funny but now everyone's cool with her.
Its not just about the manga, its about supporters and campaigns and what the community does for them.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Just an idea for future tournaments, but when a character tournament coincides with the beginning of a new arc where loads of characters are being re/introduced, could the last prelim be like half-filled with new characters as something of a wildcard division? I have no doubt that Reiju, for instance, would make it into the second round if she had been introduced a week earlier, and Aladdin and Yonji might have made good showings too.
There has to be a cutoff somewhere, and that's when nominations begin. There's probably going to be a ton of new characters over the next few chapters, but we either have a tournament or we hold it forever based on "what if someone great shows up next week?"
As is we skipped having a tourney last year due to Dresserossa being so long and the 2014 tourney being hugely lengthy.
And there's still filler matches, random surprises, and the next tournament.
-
I don't really dig this new voting system.
Or how the characters are grouped (although I understand why you guys did that…).
-
I do like the single vote system. Sure I hate having to choose, but it really does do wonders. In the multi-voting, one can vote for the big fave that near everyone votes for and then the small-time fave that only a few support. It would make sure classic faves get through but the underdogs would never have a chance. With this single vote its not quite as lop-sided as people have to really think which one they want to vote for.
Just take the round 4 for example. In the past with a multi-vote system Whitey Bay would never have gotten so high and be just behind the top four at 5th, she would often finish mid to near bottom.
-
I don't mind the single vote for each match. I mean in the last two matches we came close of having minor characters almost eliminated major characters in the tournament. I'm actually happy that Whitey Bay almost made it. Since it shows minor characters can stand a chance against some of the major characters in this tournament.

Will Vote for my Man(Demon)!
Hope Oda will bring him back for a few chapters -
So this is the feeling of ruining a democratic system.
Ops. lol -
All hail the champion!
-
How did this happen and for what heck of a logic reason?!
[emoji124]
-
-
Regicide! They're trying to murder our king! I won't allow this. You're not stopping Machvise-sama who won this tournament fair and ball. I won't allow this for Machvise-sama is the true champion. All hail Machvise-sama!
-
Machvise of the 0 votes for our King and true champion!
It took ten years but someone FINALLY won the character tournament by getting 0 votes!
-
I was rooting for him all along.
-
lmao, way to ruin the suspense Arlong Park XD
-
I can respect the zero rule. A character is so damn awesome that people don't want to vote for that character because it would be too unfair, so obviously they would win because everyone wants to vote for that character. Sound logical to me. So this means Machvise is the hardest of boiled people.
-
Wait a sec, I thought Machvise had one vote?
-
All hail the beaver-tailed, ten thousand-ton king.
-
Nope, Machvise didn't get any votes in the match.
-
Damn! I didn't expect a strawhat to lose in the first round.
!
-
Wait a sec, I thought Machvise had one vote?
The vote was ineligible since it came after the poll was closed and was not cast by me
-
I still can't believe the 0 votes actually got someone. On one hand, I'm kinda bummed, because it takes some wind of the tournament sails (everyone's just shooting for second banana now)…..on the other, only a community as goofy and awesome as Arlong Park could make this happen unintentionally XD
-
I'm actually still surprise that it did happen. But it again, there a lot of crazy stuff happen in past tournaments that is crazy as what happen today.
-
There is parallel universe where I voted Machvise (like I was going to), instead of Motzel (like I did).
I wonder if that is better world than one we live in.
-
I like to think that the guy who used to nominate Motzel in these things is thrilled in that universe.
-
What a great rule. The champ was crowned in less than a week
-
Formula of success: be a hairy, morbidly obese and completely forgettable minion.
No wonder Satori (almost) conquered our hearts. Not enough chest hair in the end.
-
Machvise is the zero winner. Its a rule that we've had since the first tournament. It's not a constantly stated rule, its no fun if people are trying for it, the same way its no fun if people are actively trying for a tie. But it is mentioned regularly and an established longrunning rule and it usually DOES get mentioned whenever someone has actually been close to doing it. At which point, upon bringing it up, someone always votes for spite. It HAS to be a silent rule. But not a secret one. Constant casual mentions are the only way it works, and it has been brought up regularly in this tournament already.
As should be clear by the fact that things are still going, the rest of tournament is now still going to determine the tournament champion, as opposed to the zero winner. They're fairly different things.
Tie break votes can only be cast by the person who made a given thread, not the person who closed it, so that its obvious and transparent that a vote was specifically being held for the purpose of breaking ties. Otherwise there'd be about a dozen staffers that could cast votes after the fact. That's how it was the entire tourney last time around.
One interesting caveat, X.Drake is allowed to have 1,000,000 votes cast for him in the last 10 seconds of a match due to being an awesome dinosaur. It only happened once, but man what a thing.
-
What has just happened is gonna really spite up the coming years' tournaments. It's gonna be long before this crime occurs again. #waveshisfist!

I think Machvise has fairly and squarely won(?) his Zero Winner title and it's glorious :'D Really, it's like giving a consolation medal to a kid that tried his very best at a race but still crossed the finish line last… or didn't cross it at all actually! A participation ribbon if you will~ It's alright Machvise! You can get at least one vote next year!
-
You can get at least one vote next year!
Well, considering Machvise-sama is a champion, he should be given the right to auto-pass next year. I believe, that if it's one-on-one (even against Kaido), Machvise-sama will be capable of harbouring some votes (not mine, though).
-
@Long:
It still ( as a new user ) feels kind of cheap that it's just unmentioned. And all of a sudden pulled off like a trump card, I feel if everyone knew about it ( I dont know about how much AP has grown and the ratio of returning/new contestants ) it wouldnt happen.
And isnt the point of nominations so that at least one person will be voting for them. The zero rule almost directly contradicts this, considering it rewards a character that someone essentially pulls their support for them. Or that if one wanted their character to win, then anti campaigns would work, I dont know the diametrically opposed goals defy logic.
This might be me being a person that needs to get out more but this legit ruined my night.
I know it's all more fun but I was hyped for this. Now it's all a race for 2nd or not a race at all
What does a character winning really mean for you? If you like a character winning because they're great or because they're fun or because they have some great campaigns behind them, then the tournament's not stopped in its tracks and you've still got the whole of it to look forward to. There's still going to be two characters who fight their way to the finals and there's still going to be one who wins out of them. Do you care that much whether they're the 2016 Champ or the 2016 wink wink nudge nudge Runner-Up? It's the same thing.
No-one would particularly WANT a particular character, a character they like, to win by not getting any votes. Like you said, and like Robby's posted above, then yeah, the tournament would become ridiculous.
So glory to Machvise and get hyped, we're still only in the first round ;)
-
I think the tournament should be redubbed The Machvise tournament or The Machvise Grand Jamboree in celebration of his efforts.
-
I keep forgetting there's a tournament must be the old age

Was checking the previous victors of this round and looked in the 4th and Femme I love you

Oh I actually didnt partocularly have any favorites I more just wanted to see the campaigns but Knowing who wins now takes the suspense out of it a little
Eidt: read robby's post and am kind of confused but I think I got it.

Machvise is the Zero King, and champion of our hearts. He'll get special treatment in the future for that.
But that doesn't mean the final 2016 tournament results are done. We wouldn't let the thing end five days in!
-
Wait, what am I supposed to do with my "Machvise - champion 2016" t-shirt now, Robby?!
-
Sell it to me, because he is still the real winner of my heart :'D
-
All this talk of cool old men in match 6 gots me thinkin about this amv
Dedicated to all the awesome old timers of OP
-
I think Machvise and Satori should team-up. Together, they would be forever unstoppable!!!!
-
AP has a thing for fat dudes, in the future I think the tournaments will be like this:
[hide][/hide] -
So what do we do if more characters get zero votes in the prelims? As has already been stated the chances of that are way up due to the single vote system.
